I believe there are plenty of others. I am pretty certain it isn't a kernel bug as such. -- Horms

Bug#275735: xserver-xfree86-dbg: server (normal and -dbg) lock with radeon (Mobility 7500 M7 LW) on an ibook
Hi, I'm not sure if this is related to the X bug. But please notice that the bug appears now on the ibook, and that this ibook went to Ireland for some repair by Apple some months ago. Actually, the ibook became suddenly totally unusable during March 2004. I don't know what apple fixed on it (might be the "Logic Board Repair" -- see http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/ ?), but now the machine works fine again... Except that X crashes. My problem is that I cannot remember when I upgraded the X server. So this problem could be related to some incompatibility between X in general (whatever the version) and the "repaired" logic board, or to some incompatibility between this newer version of X and the "repaired" logic board, or to some incompatibility between this newer version of X and the board in general (repaired or not)... I know this does not help... Thanks to Debian anyway ! -- David Decotigny -- http://david.decotigny.free.fr

/usr/X11R6/lib64 symlink for amd64
Hello. The amd64 porters have asked me that I add several symlinks to base-files (see Bug #259302) for the amd64 architecture. As base-files itself does not even contain the /usr/X11R6/lib directory on the other architectures, I consider adding /usr/X11R6/lib64 to base-files an ugly hack. Would the X maintainers be willing to add the /usr/X11R6/lib64 symlink to the xfree86-common package? I think it would be much more suitable. Thanks.

Bug#280384: xserver-xfree86: More trace info...
Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8rjmx2 Followup-For: Bug #280384 I hacked the sources to log a trace line at entry and exit points of most of the functions I could find in the execution sequence, commencing at the point where it loads baseModules (bitmap and pcidata) (actual source mods available on request, but probably not very useful). I also had it log values for symbols found in xf86PciProbe(), for reasons that will become obvious. Here's an excerpt from the log (trace lines begin with "File:"): > (WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such device) > (II) Module ABI versions: >XFree86 ANSI C Emulation: 0.2 >XFree86 Video Driver: 0.6 >XFree86 XInput driver : 0.4 >XFree86 Server Extension : 0.2 >XFree86 Font Renderer : 0.4 > (II) Loader running on linux > File xf86Init.c: Loading baseModules. > (II) LoadModule: "bitmap" > (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a > (II) Module bitmap: vendor="The XFree86 Project" >compiled for 4.3.0.1, module version = 1.0.0 >Module class: XFree86 Font Renderer >ABI class: XFree86 Font Renderer, version 0.4 > (II) Loading font Bitmap > (II) LoadModule: "pcidata" > (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libpcidata.a > (II) Module pcidata: vendor="The XFree86 Project" >compiled for 4.3.0.1, module version = 1.0.0 >ABI class: XFree86 Video Driver, version 0.6 > File xf86Init.c: Finished loading baseModules. > File xf86Init.c: Commencing xf86BusProbe(). > File xf86pciBus.c: Entering xf86PciProbe(). > File xf86pciBus.c: xf86PciProbe(): XFree86LOADER defined. > File xf86pciBus.c, xf86PciProbe(): xf86SetupPciIds = 0x7029c008. > File xf86pciBus.c, xf86PciProbe(): xf86ClosePciIds = 0x7029c05c. > File xf86pciBus.c, xf86PciProbe(): xf86FindPciNamesByDevice = 0x7029c0ac. > File xf86pciBus.c, xf86PciProbe(): xf86FindPciNamesBySubsys = 0x7029c4e4. > File xf86pciBus.c, xf86PciProbe(): xf86FindPciClassBySubsys = 0x7029c6dc. > File xf86pciBus.c, xf86PciProbe(): xf86FindPciClassByDevice = 0x7029c864. > File xf86pciBus.c, xf86PciProbe(): Calling xf86SetupPciIds(). Note that the crash (usually a segfault) occurs when it calls xf86SetupPciIds() in the file noted. I'd added tracing code at the beginning of that routine, which seems to be never reached. This led me to think that there's a problem in the binary loader somehow, which is why I had it print the values of the entry points it found (I thought they might be nulls, for example. No such luck.). So it appears to be related to the loader in some way, although why it should be ok on a 2.4 kernel (actually 2.4.27) and not ok on a 2.6 kernel (2.6.9), I have no idea. Bug#275735: xserver-xfree86-dbg: server (normal and -dbg) lock with radeon (Mobility 7500 M7 LW) on an ibook
Hi, On Tue, Nov 30, 2004 at 10:52:55AM -0500, Michel Dänzer wrote: > On Tue, 2004-11-30 at 15:25 +0100, David Decotigny wrote: > > > > I'm not sure if this is related to the X bug. > > We haven't even established yet that there _is_ an X bug. Guys, we need > your statements about CPU frequency scaling. I am still experiencing problems, I will give more details later (notably three 'free(): invalid pointer ' at 0x10028188, 0x100281b0 and 0x100281c0 when calling dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86-dbg). With respect to CPU frequency scaling, I am not using this (800 MHz all the time) and if I were using it, it would be against my will (how to check it is not enabled by some package?). Notice that the lock-ups do not freeze the system, only the X server (well, it is quite a bit annoying) that takes 99 % of CPU and is impossible to kill. The only possibility to regain control is to remotely log onto the machine and to ask for a reboot. Thanks for your help, Frédéric Lehobey
