I am still experiencing problems, I will give more details later (notably three 'free(): invalid pointer ' at 0x10028188, 0x100281b0 and 0x100281c0 when calling dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86-dbg). With respect to CPU frequency scaling, I am not using this (800 MHz all the time) and if I were using it, it would be against my will (how to check it is not enabled by some package?). Notice that the lock-ups do not freeze the system, only the X server (well, it is quite a bit annoying) that takes 99 % of CPU and is impossible to kill. The only possibility to regain control is to remotely log onto the machine and to ask for a reboot. Thanks for your help, Frédéric Lehobey
