Bug#279940: xserver-xfree86: X is a CPU + memory hog; system becomes unusable in 2 days

2004-11-06 Thread Amit Shah
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8
Severity: important

This bug report might be related to bugs #245026 and #234067

Current top reading shows X taking 400MB on my desktop. I have 512M of
physical RAM. Right now, swapt is 2MB (of 512) free and phys mem is 47M free.

top line:
 3889 root 16 0 400m 185m 1108 S 76.8 36.8 113:57.23 XFree86

I'm running 2.6.10-rc1-mm2 right now; but this behavior is independent
of the kernel version I run.

As I read the bugs mentioned above, I went ahead to install xrestop, but
I couldn't... there wasn't enough RAM to 'fork' a process!

After terminating a couple of programs and installing it, I see this in xrestop:

xrestop - Display: localhost:0

It seems that konqueror is hogging the RAM, but this happens when I have
gnome running as well.

I can't leave this system running overnight for more than 5 days; right
now, the uptime is just 2 days and 2 minutes. It's never been this bad.

Any solutions?

We can't support self-compiled X.Org installs, or the binary NVIDIA
driver, but the error message there isn't lying. You can't get
accelerated 3D and Composite working together right now -- the code just
isn't there. I suggest you pick which of Composite or GLX you want.

Thanks for your answer :)
yes, the reason was - Composite "enable"
