Bug#221998: /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm: wtmp entries not cleared upon exit

2004-02-01 Thread Adam M. Costello
> who
>
> notice the entry for the old X process that doesn't exist anymore.

I noticed the same thing today. The problem arises from the removal of
Xsetup and Xreset from /etc/X11/xdm/. According to the changlog, these
files were removed so that xconsole would not be run, but there was an
unintended side effect.

Although Xsetup served no other purpose than to run xconsole, Xreset
served two purposes: to kill xconsole, and to remove the utmp/wtmp
entries.

xconsole was started in Xsetup and killed in Xreset.

The utmp/wtmp entries were created by sessreg -a in Xstartup, and
removed by sessreg -d in Xreset.

Now there is a sessreg -a with no corresponding sessreg -d.

Perhaps Xsetup and Xreset should be reinstated, and the xconsole parts
commented out or bypassed with if/then statements. Even if this means
that Xsetup will be a no-op, it might still be good to leave it as a
place-holder for people poking around looking for opportunities to
interpose their customizations.

Bug#115882: xserver-xfree86: bug still there; workaround AlwaysRestartServer=true in gdm.conf

I've been having a similar experience with my Number Nine Imagine 128 II
rev 2. The problem is now evident with xserver-xfree86 4.2.1-12.1, but
I've been living with it for a year.

Today I poked at it a little more. The problem is when the server is
reset using SIGHUP. I can switch VTs all I want (between the X VT and
the non-X VTs) until the X server has been reset at least once. Then
I can log in again to xdm and start a new X session, but any attempt
to switch VTs causes the screen to go black (the monitor loses sync)
and nothing works except the reset button (I haven't tried pinging from
another machine because I don't have one handy).

I use xdm rather than gdm, and the workaround is similar. In
/etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config:

DisplayManager*resetSignal: 18
DisplayManager*terminateServer: true

In other words, have xdm "reset" the server with a SIGCONT (which is
ignored) instead of a SIGHUP, then terminate and resart the server.

Debian now supports the usage of TrueType fonts very well and so it
might be a good thing to have the configure-script checking if defoma
and/or x-ttcidfont-conf are installed and, if so, add the standard
defoma FontPath lines to the Files section in /etc/X11/XF86config-4.
I'd appreciate it, and maybe others too to have TT capability from the
first start of X on :-)

Bug#230664: xserver-common: Manpage missing for X program

2004-02-01 Thread Per Olofsson
Package: xserver-common

There is no manual page available for the X program. While there is an
X(7x), it does not describe the X program but rather the X Window
System as a whole. It seems like Xserver(1x) describes the X program,
perhaps make a symlink to that manpage?

Bug#226430: I have the same problem. Is 4.3.0-0pre1v4 available for the meanwhile?

2004-02-01 Thread Dirk Gerrits
Upgrading from 4.3.0-pre1v4 to 4.3.0-pre1v5 also killed X for me.
Starting X fails with no clear error message. (Signal 11 after reloading
libddc?) I'm also using the 2.6 kernel (2.6.2-rc3 currently, but I've
tried several 2.6.x kernels) and the i810 video driver (I have a 855GM
chipset).

It would really help if 4.3.0-pre1v4 or some other working version could
be made available somewhere until this is resolved.

Thanks in advance.

Bug#230696: RFE: Update Xfree86 encoding files to Xfree86 V4.4.0RC2 to include font encoding fixes and enhancements

2004-02-01 Thread Roland Mainz
Package: xfonts-base
Version: 4.2.1-16

RFE: Please update the encoding files and mkfontscale in Debian to
Xfree86 V4.4.0RC2.
There are lots of fixes in the encoding files, mainly for the Arabic
encodings (iso8859-6.8x and iso8859-6.16), Honkong locales and the new
sun-indic unicode mapping. mkfontscale has been modified to search fonts
for these new encodings, too.
Can you update these files for the next Debian release (this is mainly
for Mozilla to enhance Arabic, Chinese and Indic support), please (risk
is low, the fixes have extensively been tested) ?

Bye,
Roland

Bug#214449: xfonts-base: Seem to be linked to locale

2004-02-01 Thread Huaiyu Zhu
Package: xfonts-base
Version: 4.2.1-12.1
Severity: normal
Followup-For: Bug #214449

I have managed to resolve this problem on my system. Here's a recount:

I did an upgrade to testing yesterday and got this same problem: No
bitmapped fonts available for emacs, xfontsel, xload, etc. All ttfonts are
available, though, so terminals and mozilla, etc display properly.

After many fruitless hours I suspected it was a locale issue (I've changed
the locale of the system in the past). So I opened Control Center -> Region
and Accessibility -> Country/Region & Language. There it shows

Country: US
Language:

I changed Country to C/default and English came up in Language box. Since
this change requires restarting KDE to take effect, I logged out and in
again. Indeed the fonts are now available in Emacs. Afterwards I changed
Country back to US/English and it still works.

I cannot say that this is definitely the cause of the font problem: before
trying this, I've tried installing, removing and reconfiguring several
font-related packages, starting and stopping xfs and xfstt, etc, without
logging out of KDE. So there is a chance one of these actions did the
trick.

There is a still a partial problem: the font in emacs appears to be quite
large and ugly. It does not appear to be the same as what I had before.
