Bug#207268: I have removed my XF86Config-4 file and am configuring xserver-xfree86 to write a new one, but it wont let me because there is no MD5 checksum available. I want to to overwrite the old file or create a new one, but it wont let me. So I am stuck making an XF86Config file by hand which I can never modify using debconfig. How can I force it to write a new one. I have even purged the package and reinstalled it.

Bug#207239: New version of xfree86 french templates
After publishing my update to debian-l10n-french, I received a late proofreading which contained interesting suggestions even for the "old" templates. Problem with new libc, locales and X
Hi! I run XFree 4.3.0. I tested the new libc (2.3.2-3) and accordingly new locale package (and new gdm package). For european countries, LANG is now set to something like [EMAIL PROTECTED] (instead of the former [EMAIL PROTECTED]). Xlib does not recognize this kind of locale. More important, fonts are not found any more (probably no matching charset) because of this. This leads to really poor experience. Any thoughts on this ? -- JCD -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Strangely enough, this is a rehash of a former major libc upgrade. http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2000/debian-x-200012/msg00152.html The solution is probably to append a few lines to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/locale.alias I can provide a patch, if necessary. But shouldn't X11 try to read the locale correctly at first view? I think I already worked on this once. > -- > JCD -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Debian newbie needs XFree86 4.3 (Intel 845GL chipset)
Found a couple of "XFree86 4.3 for Woody" packages on www.apt-get.org - but I'm newbie ignorant and need help on how to configure and/or issue the correct apt-get commands on my Debian Woody machine to get XFree86 4.3 from a seperate soruce from deabian.org. I do know how to remove with apt-get remove Xfree86-common - are there other items I should remove? I'm assuming I need to edit /etc/apt/sources.list - what should I remove and add to sources.list and what commands should I issue? Thanks!!
-- JCD

Bug#207305: xserver-common: fails to purge
Package: xserver-common Version: 4.2.1-10 Severity: normal Tags: patch While purging this package, the postrm simply hangs while purging the configuration files. ps shows a grep in the postrm command is waiting for input from stdin. The postrm is missing the conffile argument to grep, which should be fixed by the following patch: --- xfree86-4.2.1.orig/debian/xserver-common.postrm.in 2003-08-26 11:29:45.0 +0200 +++ xfree86-4.2.1/debian/xserver-common.postrm.in 2003-08-26 11:33:05.0 +0200 @@ -33,7 +33,7 @@ # check existing roster file for our package name if fgrep -qx "$THIS_PACKAGE" "$XWRAPPER_CONFIG_ROSTER"; then # construct temporary roster file with our package name removed - fgrep -vx "$THIS_PACKAGE" > "$XWRAPPER_CONFIG_ROSTER.dpkg-tmp" + fgrep -vx "$THIS_PACKAGE" "$XWRAPPER_CONFIG_ROSTER" > "$XWRAPPER_CONFIG_ROSTER.dpkg-tmp" # is there anything left? if [ -n "$(cat "$XWRAPPER_CONFIG_ROSTER.dpkg-tmp")" ]; then # yes, replace the roster file -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux pinguin 2.4.22-rc2-pinguin #1 Di Aug 19 11:13:19 CEST 2003 i686 Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Versions of packages xserver-common depends on: ii debconf 1.3.12 Debian configuration management sy ii libc6 2.3.2-3GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii xfree86-common4.2.1-10 X Window System (XFree86) infrastr -- debconf information: xserver-common/xwrapper/nice_value/error: * xserver-common/xwrapper/allowed_users: Console Users Only xserver-common/xwrapper/actual_allowed_users: console * xserver-common/xwrapper/nice_value: -10

But it doesn't update the files, so I can run xfree4. What's the difference bettween a note and an error if the outcome is more or less the *same*. > If the command failed, it failed for some other reason, which should be > reported. > If there's no error message, and the command exited with a zero exit > status, it's neither. ok, the exit status is indeed 0, the command didn't "fail". So is it because of a misconfiguration on my pc that I'm getting this "notes" ? -- question = ( to ) ? be : ! be; -- Wm. Shakespeare
Thanks!! Tom Dolan

Bug#206900: xserver-xfree86: blew my config away
Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.2.1-10 Followup-For: Bug #206900 The upgrade to 4.2.1-10 blew away my whole configuration really. Firstly it asked me a few additional questions (not the whole lot), then wrote the basic XF86Config-4 which of course didn't include my dual head setup etc. If I now run dpkg-reconfigure, it asks all the questions again and then says that nothing was written because XF86Config-4 has been customised. Fine, but why didn't it recognise that it was customised during the upgrade, and why does it need to ask the questions if it's been customised already? I have no NEWS.Debian file in the directory you mentioned. Do you mean 'loaderdiff' by 'the other one'? If so, then it won't - it's against 4.3.0. http://people.debian.org/~willy/xfree86/ shows two candidates: http://people.debian.org/~willy/xfree86/454_ia64_relocation_types_134_and_135.diff http://people.debian.org/~willy/xfree86/454_ia64_relocation_types_79_134_and_135 -- Daniel Stone <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://www.debian.org - http://www.kde.org - http://www.freedesktop.org "Configurability is always the best choice when it's pretty simple to implement" -- Havoc Pennington, gnome-list pgpUf2z5XSa9m.pgp Description: PGP signature

Oh, by the way, if your claims about how the upgrade ran are correct, your configuration wasn't "blown away". You should be able to find it in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.dpkg-old. -- G.
