There are a couple of workarounds for this. They both boil down to getting the package postinst script to believe that you want it to manage the files for you. Method #1: Purge and reinstall the package. # dpkg -P xserver-xfree86 # apt-get -f install Method #2: Create the files in question, seed their checksums, and reconfigure the package. # touch /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 # md5sum /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 > /var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum # ln -sf /usr/bin/X11/XFree86 /etc/X11/X # readlink "/etc/X11/X" | md5sum > /var/lib/xfree86/X.md5sum # dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 -- G.
