Running strace on the X Server and crosschecking with the source, I presume. The fastest way would be to have someone upstream look at it, they must know what has been changed in i810 for 4.2 and thus should be able to put a finger on it comparatively quickly. Bug#147557: Bug #147557 - thanks for the workaround
I was using the closed-source NVidia driver and when I switch back to the XFree86 nv driver I got bitten by the same problem reported in #147557. I spent like one hour trying to figure out what was the reason for this weird double cursor. Thanks God I saw this bug report and read the workaround about rebooting the machine - I never thought that something so drastic was necessary to get back my hardware cursor. Oh well, that's my reward for using that stupid NVidia driver. Anyway, thanks for the workaround Overfiend.
