Suggestion for To-Do List Page

2004-01-12 Thread Alexander Winston
Currently, on , we have a list of
things to be done that users and developers can work on, though some are
fairly limited to developers. I propose adding
 and especially
 as
things that can be assisted with by ordinary users or folks that do not
have official Debian developer status yet.

Hello,

(this is similar but different to bug #21620 in that I don't
require download support).

I think that now package pools are available, it is going to be more and
more important to be able to find out answers to questions like:

Has the latest version of libssl096 been compiled for sparc?

or even better:

What is the latest version of libssl096 available for sparc?

This is important to know as package X, which build-depends on
libssl096-dev, can't get installed in testing until it has been
compiled on all platforms. This means libssl096 has been
compiled for all platforms.

update_excuses does not help, it was designed to answer the
question "can libssl096 be installed in testing?", not "can
package X use libssl096-dev from unstable for its build-depends
on all platforms?".

yes, I could download the entire Packages file for sparc to find out,
but this file is huge, and my bandwidth is limited.

(of course this means stable, as testing is guaranteed to
have the same version available for all platforms)

libroxen-simplenews 2.7-7

some mostly offline folks might just want a quick diet checklist of

3dwm-csgclient 0.3.1-11
3dwm-geoclient 0.3.1-11

$t:
lynx -dump -nolist $B|sed -n '/^ [^ ]/s/...//p'|sed

asv: $t #see what is newer than last time I got Packages.gz
apt-show-versions -u |sed 's#/.* # #'|sort|join - $t|awk '$$2!=$$3'

or better yet, you could put a $t.gz on the site... less than 100K

The packages.d.o pages list the maintainer of the package. However,
it would be nice to additionally show the uploaders. Having uploaders
displays more prominently might encourage people to become
co-maintainers of packages.

As an example, alsa-base's source package alsa-driver has:

  Package: alsa-driver
  Binary: alsa-base, alsaconf, alsa-source, alsa-headers
  Maintainer: Debian-Alsa Psychos <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Uploaders: Jordi Mallach <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Steve Kowalik <[EMAIL
PROTECTED]>, David B. Harris <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

alsa-base's packages page says:
 | Debian-Alsa Psychos is responsible for this Debian package.

I would be nice if this page would say:

 | Debian-Alsa Psychos and Jordi Mallach, Steve Kowalik and David B.
 | Harris are esponsible for this Debian package.

Like #103889(packages.d.o: should give link to changelog), my
request is about add a link in the bottom of each package page.
Why? Because is important to users read informations about
license of programs and where are your original tarballs before
download.

Bug#227273: packages.debian.org: charset mismatch (always in UTF-8?)

2004-01-12 Thread Hideki Yamane
Package: www.debian.org
Severity: important

Dear webmasters,

I'm pleased with packages.d.o is back online!

But it causes mojibake by charset mismatch so we cannot read it without
 changing to correct charset.
 (mojibake: http://www.debian.or.jp/~kubota/mojibake/)

For example, Japanese page must be in iso-2022-jp charset but it says that
contents with "UTF-8". (and Its Japanease pages content in EUC-JP charset.
for histrical reason, three major charset are used in Japan. Many UNIX
releated things are in EUC-JP (Windows and Macintosh are Shift-JIS),
but Debian's Japanease Lang web page is in iso-2022-jp charset. SO,
EUC-JP contents must be changed to iso-2022-jp for web pages.)

 Could you check it, please?

  Hi,

The page you referenced is automatically generated from information
contained in the .deb file. Even if I wanted to change it, I couldn't.

libapt-pkg-libc6.2-3-2-3.2 is a virtual package, provided by the most
recent version of apt. Because of this, "apt" is listed among the
dependencies of aptitude. However, it would probably be useful if these
webpages noted when a dependency was via a virtual package, to reduce
this confusion. I'm reporting a bug against www.debian.org with this
email, so someone will take a look at it.

  Daniel

Package: www.debian.org
Version: N/A
Severity: wishlist

Before or short after hamm is released, it should be possible to download
binaries
(deb packages) also for m68k and other arch-types.

This give us one problem: should all packages have the same release number?

If say alpha has foo_7.6-23 and i386 (or ia32) has foo_7.6-19, should both
packages are downloadable or only the newer one? What about packages, that
aren't released for one arch and not for the other (or it is only available
for one arch and not for all)?

This must be checked for each update of www.debian.org and if a package isn't
available the download-button must be disabled. And for an older release
the user should be warned.

Thanks,

Hartmut

Yes, I understand that we can get updated information from
 yourpage, Denis. but http://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po-debconf/xx
is a kind of Official information, I think. Many people will
 see it.

I hope webmasters make www.d.o update properly with all pages :)
(so this post is for www.debian.org package.)

Version: 2002-02-22
Severity: normal

The sections non-US, non-US/contrib and non-US/non-free are being mixed
together in http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages

In "Search package directories", the section field only shows non-US, but no
non-US/contrib or non-US/non-free, and selecting "non-US" really searches the
3 sections. The page for a package in non-US/free, for instance,
  http://packages.debian.org/testing/non-us/speak-freely.html
displays the correct section (non-US/non-free) in its title, but in the URL
it is wrong.

Jaime
