Broken links under "http://www.debian.org/releases/testing/"

Hello Debian maintainers

many of the links under http://www.debian.org/releases/testing/ are
broken. I have been viewing this page in the "German edition", since I
configured my browser for German as default language, so maybe only
the German page is affected.

However, the links I noticed to be broken were in the installation
instructions section and in the release instructions (both for i386).

Hope it helps

Bug#109426: how to fix this

2001-12-01 Thread Josip Rodin
Hi,

This bug has two aspects.

To add searching the contents files of the HPPA and IA-64, we'd have to make
sure checking for those architectures in stable produces a useful error
message.

To add searching for non-i386 -specific packages, we'd have to add
those to packages.debian.org.

Devising a method to fix these bugs is left as an exercise to the reader ;o)

Debian web mirror size

2001-12-01 Thread Josip Rodin
Hello,

I'm mailing you because you maintain a Debian web mirror, and I'm one of
Debian webmasters.

We will be adding the documentation for the woody release very soon. That
will enlarge the mirror by about 110 MB. If this increase is a problem for
anyone, please let us know ASAP, by replying to this e-mail.

After the woody release, however, we're probably going to remove the docs
for slink, which account for about 278 MB.

If anyone has any kind of question, suggestion or problem regarding
mirroring our web site, please feel free to tell us.

Thanks for listening.

I removed the link, it didn't seem to fit in the section it was in, and I
couldn't quite find any other place to squeeze it in.

The ports section hasn't been removed, it can still be accessed through
other pages, for example, the release page, or the site map.

If you think it deserves mention on the front page, please suggest a
location.

Does the string have to have "Debian" in it; isn't it obvious it's
Debian we're talking about?

Well, maybe it's because you're used to it with "Debian" in the
string...

I thought I'd seen it used somewhere else: it works for Mandrake
(although it's a headline for their translations).

translations of the strings in the blue box

2001-12-01 Thread Josip Rodin
Hi,

There tends to be trouble with the width of the blue box on the first page,
so I've checked all of the translations after making changes to it.

I realized that the length of "Debian International" will approach the
length of "Developers' corner" for most languages, and that is usually the
longest thing in the blue box. However, I now noticed that the French and
Italian translations have "Debian International" translated with a very long
string. It sounds like the original was "Debian Goes International"... it
should be possible to shorten that, bearing in mind that the English version
is meant as "Debian Internationally". Guys?

In the Turkish translation, the translation for "Documentation" has one word
translated and also another word added in parenthesis, for some reason. I
suppose that's a clarification. I would, however, recommend that this word
is clarified in some other, shorter way.

The string "Release Info" seems to have been translated as "Version Info"
for many languages (including HR, mine!). Looks like we renamed the tag
instead of creating a new one. I'd check the CVS history but that's a boring
process (at least I don't know how to search quickly for changes to a
particular line of a file).

I've also noticed that the phrase "bug tracking system" (NB: I didn't change
that one recently, or ever) seems to enlarge the box for quite a lot of
translations. So I was thinking, shouldn't we rename it to something
simpler, like "bug reports" or "problem reports"? That should result in
shorter translations.

Another noticeable thing is "Mailing list archives", which translates into
very long strings in several languages. I don't know what to do about that
one.
