Bug#1084906: ITP: python-pyinstaller -- bundle a Python application and all its dependencies into a single package

2024-10-10 Thread Stuart Prescott

Hi Soren

This package is a dependency of the current version of python-libusb1.

I indend to maintian it under the Debian Python team umbrella.

pyinstaller is a very unusual dependency to have either for a package in
Debian.

It's designed to build redistributable packages and can do so for
various operating systems; that's not a feature that is needed as a
build-depends for Debian packaging because we already have a
redistributable format - the .deb - and we already have the tooling to
make that. pyinstaller is also not something that would be needed at
runtime.

I had a look at python-libusb1 [1] because I was curious how it might
use pyinstaller. The only use I can see is in making it possible for
other projects to use python-libusb1 more easily in their own
pyinstaller projects by advertising a plugin entry-point [2][3]. That's
not something that we need to worry about in Debian, and it's also
neither a runtime nor buildtime dependency.

[1] https://github.com/vpelletier/python-libusb1
[2] https://pyinstaller.org/en/stable/hooks.html
[3] https://setuptools.pypa.io/en/latest/userguide/entry_point.html

I think you can save yourself from packaging pyinstaller for Debian;
given that pyinstaller includes all manner of things you'd need to build
for other operating systems, that's probably a good thing to avoid. It's
likely to be horrible to package.

I'm not sure if there's a reason to just package pyinstaller without
this specific motivation, since it's one of those tools where you almost
always need the newest version and it is mostly installed via pip in a
venv for the purposes of building a redistributable.

regards
Stuart

(Also, I learned about these pyinstaller hooks and now know how to help
a couple of upstream projects that are using pyinstaller to simplify how
they are doing it - good news!)

  Description : Access public transport information in Hamburg, Germany

  This library provides a Python wrapper for the Geofox API, allowing users to
  access detailed public transport information specific to Hamburg, Germany. The
  library enables retrieval of data such as bus, train, and ferry departures,
  journey routes, tariffs, and station information. It also supports real-time
  updates that include delay notifications and line cancellations. Users can
  obtain comprehensive public transport schedules and manage their API access
  through authentication with credentials obtained from HVV.

This library is a dependency of Home Assistant, the Python smart home platform.
I plan to maintain it as part of the Home Assistant team.

* Package name: libppr-perl

  Upstream Author : Damian Conway
* URL : https://metacpan.org/release/PPR
* License : Artistic or GPL-1+
  Programming Lang: Perl
  Description : Pattern-based Perl Recognizer

The PPR module provides a single regular expression that defines a set of
independent subpatterns suitable for matching entire Perl documents, as well
as a wide range of individual syntactic components of Perl (i.e. statements,
expressions, control blocks, variables, etc.)

The regex does not "parse" Perl (that is, it does not build a syntax tree,
like the PPI module does). Instead it simply "recognizes" standard Perl
constructs, or new syntaxes composed from Perl constructs.

Its features and capabilities therefore complement those of the PPI module,
rather than replacing them.

The package will be maintained under the umbrella of the Debian Perl Group.

  Description : Library for interacting with AWS Cognito services

  This library provides an interface to AWS Cognito, enabling the management and
  authentication of users within a specified user pool. It supports various
  operations such as registering users, authenticating them through secure
  methods like the Secure Remote Password (SRP) protocol, and handling user
  profiles. Additionally, it facilitates multi-factor authentication setup and
  device management, ensuring users' security during the authentication process.
  This library also allows for interaction with user and group data within the
  Cognito ecosystem, making it easier to manage large sets of users. It provides
  mechanisms to verify, update, and retrieve user information safely and
  efficiently.

This library is a dependency of Home Assistant, the Python smart home platform.
I plan to maintain it as part of the Home Assistant team.

  Description : Simple backoff algorithm

  This library provides a practical implementation of a backoff algorithm. It
  operates by initiating with a minimum delay which is subsequently multiplied
  by a factor upon each invocation of 'duration()'. The delay is capped at a
  specified maximum threshold. Users can reset the delay to its initial state by
  invoking the 'reset()' method. Optionally, 'jitter' can be introduced to
  introduce randomness into the delay duration, enhancing resilience against
  concurrent retry storms in distributed systems by randomly staggering retry
  attempts. This characteristic is particularly useful when establishing
  connections, providing a structured approach to handling retries. The backoff
  library can be applied in various scenarios such as network communication
  attempts, where it communicates with entities like sockets or other network
  services.

This library is a dependency of Home Assistant, the Python smart home platform.
I plan to maintain it as part of the Home Assistant team.

  Description : Library for controlling Schlage Wi-Fi locks via cloud API

  This library provides an interface to interact with Schlage Encode Wi-Fi locks
  through Schlage's cloud API. Designed to handle lock management remotely, it
  offers functionality to query lock status, initiate locking and unlocking
  commands, and manage associated features such as keypad settings and battery
  level monitoring. The library connects to Schlage's cloud service, allowing it
  to communicate seamlessly with devices to facilitate remote access and control
  of your smart lock systems. Ideal for integrating with automation platforms
  that support IoT devices, this library supports accessing lock data and
  command execution over the network with ease.

This library is a dependency of Home Assistant, the Python smart home platform.
I plan to maintain it as part of the Home Assistant team.

* Package name: libppr-perl

  Upstream Author : Damian Conway
* URL : https://metacpan.org/release/PPR
* License : Artistic or GPL-1+

  Description : match operator using Data::Checks constraints

Syntax::Operator::Is provides an infix operator that checks if a given value
matches a value constraint provided by Data::Checks.

Support for custom infix operators was added in the Perl 5.37.x development
cycle and is available from development release v5.37.7 onwards, and
therefore in Perl v5.38 onwards. The documentation of XS::Parse::Infix
describes the situation in more detail.

While Perl versions before this do not support custom infix operators, they
can still be used via XS::Parse::Infix and hence XS::Parse::Keyword. Custom
keywords which attempt to parse operator syntax may be able to use these. One
such module is Syntax::Keyword::Match.

The package will be maintained under the umbrella of the Debian Perl Group.

  Description : value constraint checking module

The Data::Checks module provides functions that implement various value
constraint checking behaviours. These are the parts made visible by the `use
Data::Checks ...` import line, in Perl code.

It also provides the underlying common framework XS functions to assist
in writing modules that actually implement such constraint checking.
These parts are not visible in Perl code, but instead made visible at
the XS level by the #include "DataChecks.h" directive.

The package will be maintained under the umbrella of the Debian Perl Group.

* Package name: python-roborock
  Version : 2.6.0
  Upstream Author : humbertogontijo
* URL : https://github.com/humbertogontijo/python-roborock
* License : GPL-3
  Programming Lang: Python
  Description : Library for controlling Roborock vacuums over Wi-Fi

  This library provides the capability to manage and control Roborock vacuums
  over a Wi-Fi connection. It enables functionalities such as starting and
  stopping cleaning tasks, adjusting fan speeds, and returning the vacuum to its
  dock. Communication primarily happens locally, enhancing response times and
  reducing reliance on cloud services, though initial setup requires cloud-based
  device discovery.

This library is a dependency of Home Assistant, the Python smart home platform.
I plan to maintain it as part of the Home Assistant team.

I did not see that prior ITP, but no process of the Go packaging team
had been followed yet (otherwise I'd have seen a repo collision) and the
package is already in NEW with the new ITP bug number.

Kind regards

Bug#1084906: ITP: python-pyinstaller -- bundle a Python application and all its dependencies into a single package

2024-10-10 Thread Soren Stoutner
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Soren Stoutner

* Package name: python-pyinstaller
  Version : 6.10.0
  Upstream Contact: David Cortesi
* URL : https://pyinstaller.org/en/stable/
* License : GPL-2 and Apache-2.0
  Programming Lang: Python
  Description : bundle a Python application and all its dependencies into a
single package

PyInstaller reads a Python script written by you. It analyzes your code to
discover every other
module and library your script needs in order to execute. Then it collects
copies of all those
files and puts them with your script in a single folder, or optionally in a
single executable
file.

This package is a dependency of the current version of python-libusb1.

I indend to maintian it under the Debian Python team umbrella.
