Bug#503184: O: libapache2-mod-auth-shadow -- Apache2 module for authentication using shadow
Package: wnpp Severity: normal mod_auth_shadow is an Apache module which authenticates against the / etc/shadow file. You may use this module with a mode 400 root:root / etc/shadow file, while your web daemons are running under a non- privileged user. The module includes a separate binary to perform the password validation, which you are intended to install with setuid/ setgid privileges. http://mod-auth-shadow.sourceforge.net/ License: GPL BACKGROUND: According to the only Debian reference I can found about this package: http://packages.qa.debian.org/liba/libapache2-mod-auth-shadow.html this software was packaged and maintained by Jorge Salamero Sanz. He requested the package to be removed by opening bug #489862, in which he stated: libapache2-mod-auth-pam is able to behave like mod-auth-shadow even in an smarter way using PAM and i barely use this package now. To my understanding, this is not correct. According to bug report #246222, libapache2-mod-auth-pam is useless for shadow authentication without adding user "www-data" to group "shadow", and libapache2-mod- auth-shadow specifically addressed that fundamental problem with a setgid binary to perform the validation. This is immediately apparent from the original description of the package and its predecessor libapache-mod-auth-shadow: Description: Apache2 module for authentication using shadow When performing this task one encounters one fundamental difficulty: the /etc/shadow file is supposed to be read/writable only by root. However, the webserver is supposed to run under a non-root user, such as www- data. . mod_auth_shadow addresses this difficulty by opening a pipe to an SGID shadow program validate, which does the actual validation. When there is a failure validate writes an error message to the system log, and waits three seconds before exiting. The validate program uses getspnam() so supports shadow files and NIS. I therefore believe the original maintainer should have orphaned this package, instead of removing it. His sources can be retrieved from the Ubuntu repositories: http://packages.ubuntu.com/source/hardy/libapache2-mod-auth-shadow (And perhaps from Debian archives as well.) Package version 2.1-2 builds fine on my i386 Debian etch system and produces a working installation. Since there is already a working package, I am not submitting this as a "Request For Package". FWIW with EasyPG you > get the same behavior when you handle a .gpg file and I was thinking > that (finally) EasyPG was the Emacs choice for everything GPG related. `alpaca' is an old and simple way. The old version of alpaca (named gpg.el) was released in 2003 and has been useful ever since. EasyPG, "yet another GnuPG interface for Emacs", version 0.0.1 was released in 2006, and then merged the development version of Emacs (will be 23.1 release) in 2008. `alpaca' just provides a hook function for *.gpg file handling. Meanwhile EasyPG is a powerful tool which also provides keyring browser, dired integration, mail functions and so on. So, the source code of alpaca is more small and simple. If you always use symmetric (shared-key) encryption for *.gpg files, alpaca is fit for you. Because alpaca always use symmetric encryption, while EasyPG asks user to select recipients and then symmetric encryption is used if no one is selected. Anyway, I'll add more information to the package description and README.Debian. Also, I'll consider the conflict of EasyPG. The alpaca feature should not be enabled when EasyPG's epa-file feature is enabled. Thanks, -- Tatsuya Kinoshita pgpTLhPkQsfVJ.pgp Description: PGP signature

The reason was that ftp-master did not like that I split out command-not-found-data into a seperate source package (it's very small), in order to make life easier for downstream (e.g. Ubuntu [which is also more or less software upstream]). Ubuntu's version of command-not-found includes lists of files creating by scanning a mirror. My version currently reads the Contents-*.gz files (because I have no complete mirror). One of the main disadvantages is that it can't support alternatives. - Both are done prior to building the source package (i.e. manually by the maintainer) Proposed plan: - Rebase everything on latest Ubuntu release - Remove command-not-found-data and provide an update command to fetch information from Contents-ARCH.gz - Add a cron job || run after apt-get/aptitude update This has the following effect: - There will be only one package (in terms of source and binary) - The installation may not work on the first run - We will have command-not-found in Debian - In contrast to Ubuntu, we have no support for alternatives => But the package could ship a list of known alternatives, which would be merged by the update script. > > Regards, > Daniel > > -- > Address:Daniel Baumann, Burgunderstrasse 3, CH-4562 Biberist > Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Internet: http://people.panthera-systems.net/~daniel-baumann/ -- Julian Andres Klode - Free Software Developer Debian Developer - Contributing Member of SPI Ubuntu Member - Fellow of FSFE Website: http://jak-linux.org/ XMPP: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Debian: http://www.debian.org/ SPI: http://www.spi-inc.org/ Ubuntu: http://www.ubuntu.com/ FSFE: http://www.fsfe.org/ signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#407652: ITA: html2ps -- HTML to PostScript converter
Daniel/Dave, If I am understanding the bug system right, this package (html2ps) was not actually adopted and is still in need of a maintainer. If that is true, I would like to adopt it. Since I use this script on a weekly basis, and I know both Perl and Postscript, this seems a good fit for me. If nobody else is working on it, I plan to remove the tcl/tk interface (thus removing the xhtml2ps binary package from Debian) and focus on fixing whatever bugs I can with the html2ps script itself. I am not (yet) a DD, or DM (though my key is signed by several in the Debian keyring) so I will apparently need a sponsor to pull this off. I may also need help working with the bug system, as I have limited experience with it, and adopting a package will be a first for me. Note that I have worked with the Debian packaging system several times before, just not the bug tracker. It's something I wanted to learn anyway, and am looking forward to it. Dave, if you are still working toward this, then I apologize for misunderstanding the situation, and never mind this message. I will find another package that I can help out with instead. Just let me know.
