Bug#329631: Debian and toolchain for TI MSP430, time to get one source?

2007-03-27 Thread Markus Becker

Hi.

I would love to see this in the official repositories as well. I would
share the debian/* directories of the MSP binutils and the tinyos
packages I have created. Integration with avr toolchain would be nice
as well. But as those were the first deb packages I created, I doubt that
they are mature enough. I guess we would need a more experienced packager
for this.

BR,
Markus

I neglected to mention, I updated the package found at
http://choralone.org/debian/n/nspluginwrapper/ last night, and it sets its
section as "contrib/utils".

Packager should package both server and client. The server
runs on Linux and communicates with either amarok,
rhythmbox, xmms, or xmms2. The client ("legacy", "simple",

I request an adopter for the file package. file is of priority standard
and comes with a library and thus the following additional packages are
generated from the source: libmagic-dev, libmagic1 and python-magic.
I believe the package to be in pretty good shape, even if the bug count
suggests otherwise; most bugs are requests for the addition of new
entries in the magic database and are not that urgent.

The package description is:
File tests each argument in an attempt to classify it. There are three
sets of tests, performed in this order: filesystem tests, magic number
tests, and language tests. The first test that succeeds causes the
 file type to be printed.
 .
Starting with version 4, the file command is not much more than a wrapper
 around the "magic" library.

Bug#376431: I tar'ed up my work from last year on packaging Open Watcom today

2007-03-27 Thread Jason Spiro

I made a tarball of my work from last year on packaging Open Watcom.
I doubt I will ever work on it further. It contains a control file, a
rules file (I don't know how well it works), and a TODO file. The
rules and TODO files contain useful tips for anyone who ever wants to
package OW.

The tarball is an attachment on the following webpage:
http://bugzilla.openwatcom.org/show_bug.cgi?id=705

As I mentioned earlier in this ITP, Open Watcom requires various
environment variables to be set before use, which goes against Debian
policy. I filed 3 bugs today against Open Watcom requesting that this
be fixed for wcc, wcc386, wccaxp, wpp, wpp386, wppaxp, and wlink. I
bet more than just those 7 tools need to be fixed, but they are the
most important of the Watcom tools. The relevant bugs are:

http://bugzilla.openwatcom.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706 - for wcc, wcc386, wccaxp
http://bugzilla.openwatcom.org/show_bug.cgi?id=707 - for wpp, wpp386, and wppaxp
http://bugzilla.openwatcom.org/show_bug.cgi?id=708 - for wlink

Bug#376431: FYI: There are unofficial Debian packages of OW available

2007-03-27 Thread Jason Spiro

All: FYI, I just found out today that someone named blairdude has
kindly made unofficial .debs (and .rpms made with Alien) for Open
Watcom available. I haven't tried them. They appear to be .debs of a
few-month-old release candidate of OW. They are available at:

http://blairdude.googlepages.com/list.html

I didn't know about them when I did my own (incomplete) work on
packaging OW, so they have nothing to do with my own packaging work I
mentioned previous posts to this ITP.

Bug#383316: FoF package for Debian

2007-03-27 Thread Sami Kyöstilä

Hi,

We finally got in touch with the Teosto lawyer, and he informed us that
unfortunately the game's music can't be distributed with a CC license.
The problem is while the songs can freely be distributed with the game,
they can't be distributed or otherwise used independently of the game
without a specific license from Teosto. I wonder if we could draft a
license that would fulfill this condition?

You all have come thru some steps already. I've always bored quickly,
reading debian packaging docs. Now something is ready.

Thus, getting more people aware of it, BTS, patches, announces in msp-gcc
list and things may go a little bit faster.

Sami and friends, thank you for your persistence in these legal matter
and in contacting Teosto. I will ask debian-legal.

Miriam, do you agree it would be a good idea to upload:

* a fretsonfire package,
* and another package with two or three Debian-Free songs packaged for
fretsonfire

into unstable for now? Frets on Fire is a popular game (the current
Windows FOF installer has been downloaded more than 230,000 times[1])
and it'd be good to get it into Debian even before this issue is
resolved. :-)

Cheers,

Sami has said that nobody would consider the tutorial to be a song.

Bug#383316: Choosing a license for Frets on Fire songs

2007-03-27 Thread Don Armstrong
First off, thanks to all involved for working through this; legal
stuff is annoying, but getting it right early makes it all worthwhile
in the end.

There's really no point to drafting such a license, because it would
not be acceptable for main, and more to the point, Teosto would have
to vet it. Teosto's lawyers should really be the ones spending time
and money to do so. (After all, that's what they're paid to do.)

What needs to happen for the work to go in main is that Teosto needs
to grant for whatever works that they own the copyright for the
ability to distribute them under MIT/Expat (or similar) in addition to
whatever license they'd use for uses of the work which are not in
compliance with MIT/Expat.

If it's decided that Teosto cannot be convinced to be slightly less
antiquated in their copyright doctrine, then the alternative is to use
whatever standard "game only" redistribution license Teosto uses (or
will write) and then distribute them in non-free with game itself in
contrib or main, depending on whether it depends upon the songs or has
enough songs included to work without them.

Don Armstrong

[You'll notice that I didn't mention the CC; there is still some
debate about its freeness, and if possible, I'd strongly suggest using
a less problematic license like MIT/Expat or the GPL.]

Bug#383316: Choosing a license for Frets on Fire songs

Maybe if debian-legal or I wrote the license (I have never written a
license before, but maybe I could modify the MIT license) we could get
Teosto to agree on more liberal terms than we would get if Teosto
wrote one?

For example, maybe we could write that the songs can be distributed by
anyone as long as they are shipped with a computer game, and that the
people who receive the songs automatically get an (irrevokable)
license to redistribute the song under the same terms.

I doubt Teosto will do that.

Cheers,
Jason

The following is what I would use if I were to license my own
compositions[1] for distribution in Debian:

Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining
a copy of this work (the "Work"), to deal in the Work without
restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy,
modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of

to do so, subject to the following conditions:

in all copies or substantial portions of the Work.

THE WORK IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR
IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF

IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORS OR COPYRIGHT HOLDERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY
CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT,
TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE WORK
OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE WORK.

I'm sure you realize Teosto would consider the BSD license far too
liberal, and forbid it. :-) Seriously, do you think my idea of writing
a license has merit?

Well, it actually seems rather strange to me for an organization which
is designed to "protect" artists disallowing artists from determining
how their own works are licensed, so I'm trying to give them the
benifit of the doubt here.

> Seriously, do you think my idea of writing a license has merit?

No, because it wouldn't be acceptable for main, and they'd have to
review it anyway. [That said, it's your time, so do whatever you think
is best.]

Do they really? That would mean that all the copyright holders would
have given them exclusive licensing rights.

I haven't read the full bug log, but has anyone contacted the
composers directly?
