Re: CHM and WMV files on debian ?

2002-11-12 Thread tony mollica
Hello. Here is the link to a utility that will extract and display
the .chm files. I found it by searching www.freshmeat.net for .chm.

http://66.93.236.84/~jedwin/projects/chmlib/

Modify the Makefile to use the correct gcc compiler you have installed,
(it uses gcc-3.2 by default) then

make
make examples
make install

Look through the results for the names of the programs.

Re: LILO Problem

1998-07-29 Thread tony mollica
Hi. Look over the documentation for mbr in /usr/doc.
mbr is a configurable master boot record that replaces
the original on the hard disk drive. In order to change
the boot parameters and display, you must change the
defaults in the source file and re-assemble the code
to be inserted as a new mbr. On my computer, when the
shift key is held down, I get '1FA'. Pressing the 'A'
key give the advanced options '1234F'. I can then boot
from any primary partition.

All the details are in the documentation and there are
several options as to how you would like the system to
boot. Using a lilo.conf file is also another way to go,
and this may be easier, although I don't think that lilo
will read a fat32 partition to boot from. I intend to
experiment with mbr to change the default booting more
to my liking.

By the way, I don't think you've done anything wrong.
A default mbr is installed and you must configure and
re-install a new one to do what you want.

ipmasq, winnt and isp homepage?

1998-08-13 Thread tony mollica
Hi. Maybe there is a simple answer that I am overlooking
for this small problem.

A debian 1.3.1 box is successfully ipmasqing for a small
home network. The win95 machines work nicely but an nt4
computer will display any url except the isp's home page.
The message is 'not able to connect to the server..' .

The default gateway looks ok. I can ping the isp's address
by name or number. Routing table on the nt machine looks good.
ie4.01 is being used.

Any suggestions?

Re: printcap rerouted filter

1998-09-30 Thread tony mollica
Hi. Just browsing through the list and found the following
excerpt from your message:

>It's like the input filter is never being called. If I set the printcap
>entry so it remote prints to our network printer, like so:
>beeper:\
>:if=/etc/magicfilter/beeper-filter:\
>:lp=:\
>:sd=/var/spool/lpd/beeper:\
>:rm=(the ip address):\
>:rp=nimrod_2:

I don't think this will work, regardless of what
type of script you use for a filter, the reason
being the following from the printing HOW-TO:
(the first sentence is the clue, and easily
overlooked. Someone previously brought this to
my attention after several days of fighting with
 the remote filtering thing.)

{
10.8. Running an if for remote printers

One oddity of lpd is that the if is not run for remote printers. If
you find that you need to run an if, you can do so by setting up a
double queue and requeueing the job. As an example, consider this
  printcap:

   lj-5:remote-hplj:\
   :lp=/dev/null:sh:\
   :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lj-5:\
   :if=/usr/lib/lpd/filter-lj-5:
   lj-5-remote:lp=/dev/null:sh:rm=printer.name.com:\
   :rp=raw:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lj-5-raw:

in light of this filter-lj-5 script:

   #!/bin/sh
   gs -q -dSAFER -sOutputFile=- - | \
   lpr -Plj-5-remote -U$5

The -U option to lpr only works if lpr is run as daemon, and it sets
the submitter's name for the job in the resubmitted queue correctly.
You should probably use a more robust method of getting the username,
since in some cases it is not argument 5. See the man page for
  printcap.

}

Hope this helps.

RE: Pon - when am i connected?

1998-05-29 Thread tony mollica
You can use the ip-up and ip-down scripts located in
/etc/ppp. The ip-up script is run when a ppp connection
is successfully made. Parameters are passed to this
script that can be used to echo the connection data
wherever you want (tty, ttyp0, etc). You can use
ip-down script to display a message when the connection
is brought down. I also have a couple of lines in these
scripts to place a date/time entry into a file to keep
track of my logons/logoffs.

hda1 problem

1998-07-11 Thread tony mollica
Hello:

I had a nicely working system with
hda11 gig /
hda248M swap
hda31 gig formatted space as /extra
hda4extended
hda52 gigs formatted space unmounted

The root partition was getting used up so
I tried to put /usr on hda3 using
'cp -dpRv * /extra' and it appears it went
successfully. I changed the original /usr
to /usr1 and then /extra to /usr. Now I have
two problems:

1. xdm won't let me log in as anything but root
2. hda1 partition now shows 0 MB available and
100 percent usage. du shows the same amount
of space being used in /usr and the copied
   partition.

Changing back to the original /usr doesn't solve
either problem.

Sure could use a pointer or two while I look for
my own solution that could make the problem much
worse.

smb.conf and preexec

1999-02-24 Thread tony mollica
Hi. I'm running samba 1.9.18p8 on a Debian
2.0, 2.0.34 system connected to a winnt4sp3
network. Most everything works nicely, but
I can't get the cdrom's (2 scsi) on the Linux
box to automount with "preexec = ". The fstab
is set as follows and as recommended in the smb.conf
file:

/dev/scd0 /cd0 iso9660 defaults,noauto,user,ro 0 0

The smb.conf entry is

[cd0]
comment = Samba Server's cdrom 0
writable = no
locking = no
path = /cd0
public = yes
preexec /bin/mount /cd0
postexec /bin/umount /cd0

/cd0 has 0755 permissions and 'mount /cd0' works from
from the terminal. Everything appears to be working,
except it seems the 'preexec' command doesn't get run.

I find no further information on this item in the docs.

Re: adsl

1998-12-12 Thread tony mollica
GTE has just offered ADSL in my area with several
plans/speeds. The lowest cost is $40/month for
256k download/64k upload and a 'special' until the
end of December: for $100 they check the lines,
install ADSL with one phone number, do any
inside wiring that's necessary and give you the
adsl modem (no monthly fees for the modem, I'll own
it). The modem connects to an ethernet card.

The local ISP charges $30/month for unlimited
connection time at 256k, $75 setup and when I
told them I use Linux, they said 'No Problem'.
They issue one IP for this fee.

I ordered it. Should take about two weeks.
The ISP said that all the adsl subscribers are
getting the full bandwidth, so far. This may
change with more subscribers on the loop.

: Failed;what failed?
: disconnect script failed ;can't seem to get any

: Exit. ;OK.
: Delaying 10 seconds before clear to dial.

I changed a parameter to make it 10 seconds between

Diald has been working for about two weeks with no

ppp questions.

1998-10-29 Thread tony mollica
Hi.

Just loaded Debian 2.0 and configured my
isp connection with pppconfig and everything
works, but there are some differences from
my previous 1.3.1 installation.

First, in the messages there is a notice that
says 'Cannot determine ethernet address for
Proxy ARP'. I'm somewhat unclear as to what
this means to the status of my connection,
although the connection is made at the maximum
speed (53K) and seems to be very stable.

Second, there seems to be many more 'errors:' and
'dropped:' in the RX packets row using ifconfig.
My old Debian 1.3.1 had almost no errors, but
the new Debian 2.0 collects many more
errors: and dropped: . The errors seems to
occur about every 55-60 packets received.

Have I misconfigured something?

Slow ppp w/Debian2.0 vs. Debian1.3.1

1998-11-01 Thread tony mollica
Using my old Debian 1.3.1, plog gives a consistent
50666 to 5 connection rate and ifconfig never
registers any errors at these speeds. Netscape
download speeds range from 4.8 to 5.5 Kbytes/sec,
sometimes a little more, somtimes less.

With Debian 2.0 however, even though the initial
connection is reported at the same high speeds,
the download speeds are significantly less
(2.0 - 3.5 Kbytes/sec) with many errors reported
in ifconfig. An error is registered about every
100-120 packets. The errors appear to occur
consistently on this schedule.

Is there a way to find out more about the packet
errors?

All the hardware is the same for each Debian version,
only the hard disk drive is swapped. The modem is
a USR Sportster 56k and works flawlessly, with v1.3.1
at least. As far as I can tell, my configurations
for ppp are the same between both versions with the
same ISP and the same phone access number. The 1.3.1
box uses Netscape v4.05 and the v2.0 uses v4.07.
However, just retrieving files using ftp from an xterm
confirms the same download speed difference between
versions.

Any suggestions?

X text display problem

1998-11-14 Thread tony mollica
Hi.

Using Debian 2.0, 2.0.34 with X 3.3.2.3-2.

I have a couple of minor problems with text
displayed by some X applications. For instance,
the xlock (xlockmore) program displays a small
window and some text if you move the mouse or
hit a key without entering the password. This
text should be white on the currently displayed
background color. However, what appears to be
happening is that the text is displayed in the
proper text color (white) but on a white
background so what is actually displayed are
several white bars on the black background where
there should be text. The same occurs with
xcoral in the 'help', 'manual' or other windows.
With xcoral, I am able to change the foreground
and background text colors to be readable, but
regardless of what the normal background color
is set to, all of the text is displayed on a
white background. Same thing with xemacs20.
Text background is white and can't seem to change
it.

I don't think this is an application specific
problem but an X default setting that needs to
be changed or text background specific setting
that needs to be adjusted . I have been through
a lot of documentation and config files but
have been unable to find the solution.

Any suggestions on fixing this item?

Memory Usage Reports

Hi. I'm not that clear on how Linux uses and organizes memory
if anyone can provide some insight or other references. I'm
using Debian Linux off the CD with the 2.0.30 kernel and no
problems are noticed. Below are the results from 'free'
with notes on which applications I have started. Obviously,
as more applications are run, the amount of used memory
increases, but when the applications are closed, the used
memory does not return to the previous level and there is
always less free memory after an application is started
and then closed. The free buffers remains somewhat constant
but there is still some 'unexplained' loss here too. My questions
are these:

What is the relationship between the free memory and the
 free -/+ buffers?
How is the difference between number 2 and number 5, below,
accounted for, just by starting and then stopping these

sure that your bios supports these cards.
How do you go about that?

Re: CHAP (non-MS) authentication problem

1998-03-26 Thread tony mollica
Just had a similar problem with my isp. Their authentication
randomly changes between pap and chap. I'd like to compare your
config files (options, options_out and ppp.chatscript) with mine,
but try this for a start, In your chap-secrets file try the following
line and remove the others. Of course, put your own password in there.

yetter * your-password

Make sure there is a blank line entered after this single entry.
Then, if there are any pap or chap lines in the options files,
comment them out. I once was told, and this appears to be true
from what I've seen, that most options files have too much junk
activated.

Add these line to your options file, if they are not present:

name username
netmask 255.255.255.0
0.0.0.0:aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd

The netmask is for a class c address for my isp.
The aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd is set to the isp's primary dns server
in my configuration.

I made too many changes to my configuration at one time to
narrow down exactly what made it work, but it did so I just
left it at that.

sdram and linux

1998-03-30 Thread tony mollica
Hi. Just looking for a little more info.

Just installed 64megs 168 pin sdram (replacing the 64megs of the usual
type 72 pin edo stuff) in my system and it appears
to be causing file system corruption, as indicated on boot
up by fsck (attempted boot up, actually). Booting from the rescue
disk and running fsck reports lots of problems, fixes them all, but the
problems reappear at the next reboot from the hard disk drive. Also ran
into a problem with programs exiting unexpectedly and core dumping for
no apparent reason.

Tried my Debian kernels 2.0.30 and 2.0.33 with the same
result and put the original memory back, which seems to
have fixed the problem with either kernel version.

Has there been any similar reports or other problems using
168 pin sdram type memory or are there any hardware or kernel
settings that I may have overlooked to make this work? The
memory works ok on 'other' o.s.'s and machines.

thanks,

sdram and linux #2

1998-03-30 Thread tony mollica
Thanks for all the replies.

I can appreciate the possibility of the hdd going bad, but
it has been operating flawlessly before and after trying to
use the sdram, but that doesn't exclude the possibility. Tried
the old mem and both the .30 and .33 kernels this morning
with absolutely no problems.

I don't find any specific settings for the sdram in the
system bios and what there is of a handbook for this
generic motherboard (430vx)isn't much. The #1 suspect, I think,
is an incompatibility with the m-board and, #2 would be
a bad chip.

I'll try a different type of sdram or use it
in a win95 box. What's a few extra crashes,
I don't use it very often, anyway.

Re: sdram and linux

1998-04-02 Thread tony mollica
thanks for the info. The motherboard recognizes the memory
as sdram just fine and linux starts up ok but then the problems
start. Mostly, applications stop and disappear from the
desktop without warning and the file system (as fsck reports)
becomes corrupted. The machine never locked up and it appears
to shut down normally, but on the next boot, fsck lists some problems
that require that I boot from a floppy and run fsck on hda(1).
fsck then fixes all the problems (several screens worth) and then
linux will boot up normally again, shutdown ok and then the next
boot up begins with the problems all over again. I've done this
sequence about 8 times without any apparent permanent damage.

No applications or programs appear to be corrupted by this
sequence. I re-installed the original 72 pin EDO stuff and
have been running both the 2.0.33 and 2.0.30 kernels I built
without any problems at all. I've come to the conclusion that
the no-name motherboard I'm using, which has been working just
fine and without even a burp, just has a problem with sdram.
One 64 meg sdram I tried showed as 16 megs AND locked up on boot.
The second one registered the mem ok, but had the previous problems.
Both work ok on the Redmond stuff. This motherboard doesn't appear
to have any bios configuration items in it for the sdram.

StarOffice,printing and deskjets, again

1997-12-08 Thread tony mollica

One more time please.

Here's the setup:
Linux 2.0.30 (debian, of course)
StarOffice 3.1 installed from the latest .deb installer
HP870Cse printer
magicfilter 1.2-10 (debian distribution)
gs-aladdin 5.03 (.deb install )
The rest is the usual stuff, everything works, except
the printing.

Normal text printing works fine.
I am assuming that the StarWriter program uses postscript
format, but even with the default installation, which uses the  dj550c
filter, no luck getting anything except all the formatting commands printed
out.

printcap

lp|hp|hp870|HP870Cse
    :lp=:\
    :sd=/var/spool/lpd/hp870:\
    :rm=192.168.1.1:\

    :if=/usr/sbin/dj550c-filter:\
    :lf=/var/log/lp-errs:

The dj550c-filter has not been changed at all and appears
to have the necessary calls to gs with the  cdj550 driver.
The file appears to be bypassing the assorted routings
through the filters and printing raw.

Any help would be appreciated.  I can always provide
more info.

Re: reply:StarOffice,printing and dj, again!

1997-12-08 Thread tony mollica

Thanks for the replies.

For Paul Thompson: I wasn't sure exactly what that did
and that was a test to see what condition the message was in when it came
back to me.  Now I know.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears
Netscape will pick the proper format for the message and recipient if you
pick the 'send both types' box before transmitting.  That one time
I forced it to send in HTML.  Bad idea for some.
I've turned this off.  Let me know if it doesn't
work properly.

For the rest who provided guidance on my printing problem.
The Star Writer package inserts the postscript stuff at the beginning of
the file.  The first line is '%!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0' and the file
is saved as a .sdw file.  I saw somewhere that the filters don't check
the file suffix but instead look for the clues in the file itself to determine
the filetype and filtering stuff.  However, the little test file goes
right through and prints all 6 or so lines.  Looks like the
file is not going through the filter(s).  Let me
get a little lengthy to understand the route the file takes.  When
I print from Star Writer, let's say, the lpr command is used.  At
this point, the  input filter from printcap is applied (dj550c-filter)
which starts magicfilter (#! /usr/sbin/magicfilter) which then applies
the magicfilter configuration file to identify the file type, then passes
that information back to dj550c-filter which then hands it over to gs (if
it is a PS file) with the appropriate command line parameters and then
to the printer.

I don't think the file type is identified properly and
as a result, is passed through
as regular text.  Is there a way to test whether
the problem is with magicfilter or gs, or a way to test each separately?

thank for the help,

tony mollica

Re: reply:StarOffice,printing and dj, again!

1997-12-08 Thread tony mollica

Hi.  Although I sent the printcap with the ljet4m-filter
as the input filter, this was just the result of my trying different filters.
The actual filter than I have been using in the dj550c-filter, and that
should have been in the printcap.  You probable gathered that already.
I also made the suggested changes with the script you sent, but it doesn't
do anything from any printing situation, including
Star Writer.  No file in /tmp is created.
However, the script works if execute it and it creates an empty file with
the proper name.  It appears my problem is that the input filter is
never used, or bypassed, somehow.  Somewhere along the line of trying
different combinations of filters, a file showed up in /tmp that probably
looks like what your after.  It's attached with the original, system
generated filename and the actual text of the document is not recognizable
in this file.

Re: reply:StarOffice,printing and dj, again!

1997-12-09 Thread tony mollica

Jens.  Here's a twist.  I've attached a short text
file clipped from the Linux Printing Howto.  Apparently, the input
filter is not run when printing to remote printers.  The clip describes
setting up a double print queue in order to run the input filter, but still
no luck.  I'm not sure I understand what needs to be done to make
the double queue work properly.  Have you seen any setup like the
one in the clip before?

10.8. Running an if for remote printers

One oddity of lpd is that the if is not run for remote printers. If
you find that you need to run an if, you can do so by setting up a
double queue and requeueing the job. As an example, consider this
  printcap:

   lj-5:remote-hplj:\
   :lp=/dev/null:sh:\
   :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lj-5:\
   :if=/usr/lib/lpd/filter-lj-5:
   lj-5-remote:lp=/dev/null:sh:rm=printer.name.com:\
   :rp=raw:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lj-5-raw:

in light of this filter-lj-5 script:

   #!/bin/sh
   gs -q -dSAFER -sOutputFile=- - | \
   lpr -Plj-5-remote -U$5

The -U option to lpr only works if lpr is run as daemon, and it sets
the submitter's name for the job in the resubmitted queue correctly.
You should probably use a more robust method of getting the username,
since in some cases it is not argument 5. See the man page for
  printcap.

Re: update:StarOffice,printing and dj, again!

1997-12-10 Thread tony mollica

Hi!  Just an update on this printing situation from
StarOffice to a remote nt4.0, hp870Cse.  I've tried your suggested
printcap and script and still no luck, BUT after some minor fiddling with
the entries I have part of this operation working and I can watch the document
pass through the first spool directory and stop in the second.  lpq
show that there is a entry waiting to be printed, but 'no daemon present'.
I think the problem now lies with the way nt4.0 lpd identifies its printers
to the Linux box.  My old printcap without the double queue apparently
allowed lpq, from linux, to get information directly from the nt4.0 lpd
spooler.  The double queue configuration doesn't allow this to happen
and lpq(linux) finds no printers connected to nt4.0.   Somewhere
along the line, nt4.0 assigns the 'hp870' name to the nt4.0 lpd printer
and I can't identify where or how this happens.  As always,
without the double queue and/or filter(s), plain text goes straight through
with no problems.

I'll keep working on it.

Re: Problem solved:StarOffice, printing and dj, again!

1997-12-10 Thread tony mollica

Good news.  The problem is solved.  First, what
I needed to do was enter a PRINTER=hp870rm and associated export statement
to make this the default printer.  hp870rm is the name of the device
actually connected remotely via the rm and rp entries in printcap.
This allowed the proper connection to the nt4.0 lpd service by way of hp870rm
and 'lpq -Php870rm' responds normally.  Any printing is still sent
to lp, the printer with the filter attached in printcap, then gets routed
through the remote printer.  Lastly, using your short script, and
checking the man page for lpr, I added a '-l' to get

'/usr/sbin/dj550c-filter $* | lpr -l -Php870rm -U$5'.

Without the -l, an unusual character set gets printed
but  with the -l the control codes are evidently passed to the printer
to do what they're supposed to do.  Star Writer 3 now prints very
well.

I appreciate the help.
thanks

Re: PPP still a pain

When the system boots, is there a ttyS2 entry with the associated
interrupt listed?

cat /proc/interrupts won't display an interrupt that is not currently in
use.
The modem would have to be working before you can get it to show up in
the list.

Have you tried dialing out using any other programs, such as minicom?

make-kpkg ??

1997-11-26 Thread tony mollica
There have been some posts on rebuilding the kernel that mention the
kernel-package.deb package, make-kpkg and non-debian kernel source or
packages. I have been successfully rebuilding my kernels, but only from
a debian CD with no 'outside' sources. Now I would like to upgrade from
2.0.30 to 2.0.32 (from www.linux.org) and I see that the original source
should be 'debianized' with 'make-kpkg' in the source directory. Could
someone enlighten me on the reason for this, the procedure and what this
does, exactly.

Re: forcing D-Link 530 into Full-Duplex

2000-09-29 Thread Tony Mollica
I'm certainly no expert at this but I'm not quite
sure how to pass the full_duplex parameter to a
driver that is compiled into the kernel. You may
have to modify the source for that. But if you
compile the via-rhine driver as a module you can
pass the parameter two ways that I know. You can
interrupt the boot process with the left-shift key
and after the linux: prompt add

linux: via-rhine full_duplex=1

or you can add a line in your modules.conf file
like this:

options via-rhine full_duplex=1

There is some minimal documentation in the source file
on this. You might check the syntax I've provided for
accuracy. The second method I'm sure is correct. The
first one I'm not 100% sure of but it may work for both
modules and compiled-in drivers. If you have more than
one card installed using the same driver, you can set
them all to full duplex by separating the parameters with
a comma, such as full_duplex=1,0,1,0. This makes the
first and third cards full duplex and the second and fourth
cards not.

good luck,

Debian 2.2r3, kernel 2.4.5 and XF403???

Hello. I'm about to upgrade my X from 3.3.6-11potato

I've done the apt-get upgrade and started the apt-get

destroy a perfectly good running X.

How much of the above X stuff will be replaced by new X and what about
gnome being removed? Will I have to now recompile gnome for the new

are not provided by the X packages, like xfmail for instance?

Any other info would be appreciated.

I have tried this and it does work. I installed opera from the .deb
they
provide. I then installed the jre1.3.1 into /usr/local/jre-1.3.1 and
modified the plugin section of the /usr/bin/opera script

problem. I didn't have the libXm.so.2 lib (the instructions say you
must install Motif) so I followed the links to www.motifzone.net and
downloaded the openmotif package for debian and the java plugin
now works.

Re: Toshiba Satellite Pro 470CDT

2001-12-21 Thread tony mollica
If the 470CDT is anything like my 460CDT, changing
the drive is very easy. There is a small panel in
front that can be removed by first removing a small
screw accessed from the bottom the the unit. Once the
screw is out, remove the plastic cover by sliding it
down exposing the drive. The drive is in a holder
with a lip that you can grip with your fingers, then
just pull the drive and holder out. Put the new drive
in the holder and plug it back in.

Ibus info needed

2021-06-30 Thread tony mollica

Good afternoon.

I've looked through the docs and wiki about this application that apparently
runs in the background but I'm not actually able to figure out exactly what this
app is doing for me.

So, what's it doing for me, and if I remove it will I notice anything missing in
form or function? Look like it only handles keyboard and language functions.

Thanks,
Tony

Re: Ibus info needed

2021-06-30 Thread tony mollica

Yes, that's the one. Thanks, IL KA, I went through it again

and still the only thing I'm getting from the info is that Ibus handles
different language inputs (characters) which isn't really needed if English is
used and is pretty much already taken care of in Debian and other distributions
regardless of Ibus. But, it may be useful to me if I intended to generate my
own alphabet with a proprietary character set or if I wanted to digitize my Dick
Tracy Decoder Ring. I'll remove it and see what happens.

I've been on and off this list since the mid-90's where being subscribed meant
there were dozens of posts and replies in the time I've been subscribed today,
which is about 3 hours. Traffic appears to have fallen off, off-topic
discussion, whatever that topic was advertised to be, appears to be, well,
off-topic and more about behavior and language of the posters instead of valid
questions and answers. Too bad, used to be a good problem solving source.
Maybe it went elsewhere.

Debian 10.7 and Chrome

2021-01-11 Thread tony mollica

Hello.

Just trying to find out if anyone else is experiencing this particular issue
with Debian and Chrome.

When I log on to a particular site, my bank account actually, several panels pop
up, the main panel being an account summary. The panel has 5 columns each
containing various information about each account. The problem is that the last
column on the right side of the panel cuts off about 6-8 characters. It looks
like the panel (window) isn't big enough. The kicker is I have two Debian 10.7
boxes and only one displays this issue. Also, it doesn't happen with Firefox or
on a Windows10 machine with either of those browsers. The machines and the
browser apps are all up to date and at their latest versions. Changing the font
or screen size by any method does not fix the problem. It appears the issue is
with this particular machine or with the Chrome config on this machine, but I'm
at a loss as to what config settings would even control this behavior.

This is really not a big deal, just annoying, but any suggestions for a fix?

Thanks,
TM

Debian 11, Chrome and .asp pages

So it is with this latest issue. The problem is I need to log into a router and

of the configuration pages are in the .asp format and my Chrome or Firefox
browsers running on a fresh Debian 11 install won't display the pages and gives
me a 404 error. What is my Debian install missing to allow my to access these
pages. There's no problem using Debian10, only 11 and also no issues using the

Guidance please.

Hm. .asp is a server-side thing (i.e. the server transforms whatever into
html and serves it). It's Microsoft's version of CGI, back from last century.

The 404 is also a server-side thing (i.e. at the router side). Your Linux
laptop isn't involved in that, it's just reporting what it "sees".

Thus, can't be at the root of the 404. You'll have to describe in more detail
what is going on.

That might take some back-and-forth.

Cheers

Re: Debian 11, Chrome and .asp pages

2022-08-28 Thread tony mollica

Sorry, been offline and had some real work to do yesterday.

Very simple setup. The Viasat router is on the desk not 2 feet away from my
laptop and desktop. The desktop logs in to the router with no issues but
running Win10. The Debian laptop is also not 2 feet away running Debian 11.
Another Debian 10 machine logs in remotely with no issues. The Deb11 laptop
brings up the status page with no log in necessary, but any other functions
require a log in through any of the other pages, which are .asp pages.

I have a manually entered ip for the interface and a route entered directly to
the router. I can get to the router but it doesn't allow all the functions.
There no unusual configs and the whole system and setup works exactly as it
should except for those pages accessed with Debian 11.

Angel, I'll try your suggestions for looking a the Chrome network stuff.

I've read all the stuff up to 8:45am this morning (MST/MDT) and I'll check my
config files for any unusual issues.

I didn't want to clog up the bandwidth and put all the info in the post. I was
hoping for a response from anyone who had a similar issue and had a simple
solution. I can get into the router and do what I need to do, so that's not a
problem. I don't need to have access to my router via Debian 11.

So, the real issue is that I have Debian 11 on this laptop and and it's not
behaving as it should, or behaving as my other Debian 10 machines, which access
the pages with no issues. Just like to know why the new version doesn't behave
like the old version.

thanks,
TM

Since anecdotes are making it into this thread, I'll submit one more, not really
related to this issue. I frequent a number of automobile BBs where problems are
presented and resolutions are offered. A not uncommon problem would be 'my car
can't pass the smog test', and the fun begins. By the 50th post the list of
recommended remedies would have the entire car replaced either in total or one
part at a time, all probably due to a cracked, 2 dollar, 3mm vacuum hose, a
simple solution.

Wait, wait, wait, wait.

I am *so* confused right now. Is the Debian system the WEB SERVER, or
is it the WEB BROWSER

The Debian system is the web browser, a SOHO router is the server.

So the problem is *not* "I have a .asp site and my web server stopped
serving it properly", but rather "my browser is trying to hit a URL
that happens to end with .asp and it's not working".

Then all the focus on the 4 characters .asp in the URL are a complete
red herring.

Thanks, that was my point. I just couldn't express it so concisely :)

What's the actual *symptom*? What does the web browser say or do when
hitting this URL?

Perhaps the 404 is coming in response to a subordinate resource (e.g.
the Location: in a redirect or some other of the 3129 ways the Web
has to play that game). That resource would depend on "the browser"
in some general sense.

Oh wait: does have the new installation a different /etc/hosts?
Perhaps the OP has made an entry "back then" to get the router's
cra^H^H^H Very Special GUI working? Something like that.

Cheers

Re: Most reliable dual band driver/chipset rtl8812au Intel 8265 Fenvi

2018-12-24 Thread tony mollica

Posting as searchable, followup info.

I found a relatively cheap PCIe adapter labelled Fenvi FV-K1200ac
that has an Intel 8265 chipset with ac1200 capability
and Bluetooth.  Loaded the iwlwifi drivers, plugged it in and
rebooted to a perfectly working Intel wifi adapter.
Not quite as fast as the Alfa (when working) but I think it's an
antenna issue that I'll upgrade and try.  The router is about
50ft away but connection speeds are 500Mbs+ and often over 700Mbs,
which is many times faster than my Internet
connection anyway.  But a reliable connection, at last.

Also updated my Stretch 9.6 from kernel 4.9 to stretch-updates
v4.18.  Fenvi still works and now has the latest drivers.
Had an issue with a missing Nvidia driver but easily resolved with
apt as all the files were there, just not installed.

Recompiled the rtl8812au driver for the new 4.18 kernel and the
disconnection problem still exists.  It appears that something
in the params or driver is shutting down the adapter causing the
disconnection and then needing either a LONG time
to recover or being physically disconnected (USB)-reconnected to
regain the ability to make the wireless connection.

Not a laptop and not a heat issue.  Something in the hardware or

to leave this adapter in some unstable state that requires a

either disconnecting the adapter from USB, rebooting the

just unloading and reloading the driver.  Very irritating since
it works very well when

grub assist needed

2007-07-03 Thread tony mollica

Hello. Looking for a grub assist to make my system boot the way I would
like, hopefully without making the system un-bootable as a result.

I have a nicely working system booting from a SATA drive with two kernels
onboard, one generic and one k7 kernels. The system config is one SATA
drive, one IDE dvd burner on the one and only onboard IDE channel and
an additional Silcon Image 680a IDE card (working properly but no drive
on either channel). The si680a is wired to a removeable tray that I would
like to be able to change drives. The system was originally loaded without
this drive in the bay and so grub knows nothing about it. If I shutdown and
reboot with the removeable drive (ide) in the bay it obviously changes the
drive designations as the si680a drive is recognized first, no boot sector
is found on this drive and errors and no boot occurs.

I would like to be able to boot the system automagically whether or not
the removeable drive is loaded it the bay but I'm at a loss for how to do
this safely. There is no BIOS setting to help decide which drive is first,
second or otherwise. I find no options for the si680a driver that would
delay or change the order of the drive recognition. I need a way to always
have it boot from the same drive no matter what other disks loaded on
the IDE channels.

Any suggestions?

thanks,

Have you considered using filesystem labels? Something like

root=LABEL=root

Any suggestions?

Debian testing, alsa and cups

2007-02-01 Thread tony mollica

Hello.

Been thru the (RT)FM and maybe missed it but didn't find it.

Upgraded stable to testing, and it worked with much difficulty
and repeated
'aptitude dist-upgrade' and ended up with two mildly annoying
situations

with ALSA and CUPS.

ALSA won't provide sound after a reboot or re-logon unless I run
the
/etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart script. Works good after that.
Using KDE3.5

and kernel 2.6.18. Works OK with GNOME logon so it seems it's a
KDE thing. Could just run the command somewhere but I'd like to
find

the problem, eventually.

CUPS also won't print after a logon or restart. I found this
problem but I'm
at a loss to fix it permanently. Seems the /dev/usb/lp0 device
is assigned
the user:group of root:lp instead of what CUPS likes, lp:sys.
I can script
this change too but same as above, I'd like to find the glitch
and do it
right. Does CUPS need to assign different permissions, or does
the hotplug/udev

system need to assign a different user:group? And where to do this?

Thanks for the assistance?

Re: The Final Frontier. Upgrading Sarge to Etch

2007-02-03 Thread tony mollica
Just upgraded mine. I've been fearing that upgrade as the
report for the upgrade
showed hundreds of packages to be removed. What I did was copy
the current
installation to another disk, made it bootable so I have the
original disk intact.

Ran the update and dist-upgrade many times, including installing
the new kernel
2.6.18 to get the udev stuff. After a while I finally reached
the point where no packages
were being removed, added updated, etc and the installation
works fine. I have a post
labeled 'Debian testing, alsa and cups' in here somewhere that
is a request for help

to find a couple of relatively minor problems (but annoying).

The test was what would happen if I just ran the upgrade and see
if a bootable
system resulted, and it worked. Unfortunately I don't keep good
records so I can't
give a step by step. I did follow a procedure I found somewhere
in the documentation
that recommended some updates prior to the upgrade. The
Aptitude was one of
them. Also, one of the responders to my post mentioned above
had a link to

a procedure that also may help.

Have fun.

Funny, I thought one of the big advantages of Debian over most other
distros is that you *don't* need to reinstall when a new version comes
out. What's the deal with etch, then? Debian's not jumping on the
'reinstall for every upgrade' bandwagon, is it?

(And I ask this from a system which has been through slink, potato,
woody, and is currently on sarge, all without needing a reinstall.)

USB Floppy drive behavior with udev??? (long)

2008-02-16 Thread tony mollica

Hello.

I'm trying to get an understanding of udev and a usb floppy drive I have.
The drive is a Mitsumi usb floppy sold under the Nexxtech name and it
does work but there are a couple of behaviors that I don't understand.
First, without any udev rule mods, plugging the drive in results in a long
wait while 7 /dev/sd? are mounted at /media/usbdisk(s), usbdisk, usbdisk-1
thru usbdisk-6. All are active and can be used.

/dev/sdh on /media/usbdisk type vfat
(rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,quiet,shortname=mixed,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=077,iocharset=utf8)
/dev/sdi on /media/usbdisk-1 type vfat
(rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,quiet,shortname=mixed,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=077,iocharset=utf8)
/dev/sdj on /media/usbdisk-2 type vfat
(rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,quiet,shortname=mixed,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=077,iocharset=utf8)
/dev/sdk on /media/usbdisk-3 type vfat
(rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,quiet,shortname=mixed,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=077,iocharset=utf8)
/dev/sdl on /media/usbdisk-4 type vfat
(rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,quiet,shortname=mixed,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=077,iocharset=utf8)
/dev/sdm on /media/usbdisk-5 type vfat
(rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,quiet,shortname=mixed,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=077,iocharset=utf8)
/dev/sdn on /media/usbdisk-6 type vfat
(rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,quiet,shortname=mixed,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=077,iocharset=utf8)

If I use one of the udev rules below there is only one mount at
/media/usbdisk.

---
##udev local rules /etc/udev/rules.d/010_local.rules

##Using SUBSYSTEM(S) block, scsi attributes
#SUBSYSTEM=="block",SUBSYSTEMS=="scsi",DRIVERS=="sd", ATTRS{model}=="USB

## Using SUBSYSTEM(S) block,usb
SUBSYSTEM=="block",SUBSYSTEMS=="usb",DRIVERS=="usb",ATTRS{model}=="MITSUMI
USB FDD 061M",NAME="NX_usbflop"

---
And the mount for the 'usb' rule above:

/dev/NX_usbflop on /media/usbdisk type vfat
(rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,quiet,shortname=mixed,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=077,iocharset=utf8)

Re: Trouble trying to find Kernel source...

2008-02-25 Thread tony mollica

I hate to stick my neck out here only because my solution to this
problem was just to keep banging away at the keyboard until all
the errors went away, and I don't keep notes. There has also been
quite a bit on the list about this in the last week or so.
Seemed complex. BUT, here is what I remember. The source packages
for Debian are linux-source- and linux-headers-version>,

the from 'uname -r'. I took the kernel config from /boot
and copied it to the source dir as '.config', ran 'make oldconfig' to use
this configuration then ran the kernel compile for a few minutes to make
the necessary files for the Nvidia driver builder, then run the Nvidia
driver

program with the --kernel-source-path=KERNEL-SOURCE-PATH command
line option so it finds the kernel source.

Pending any minor missing items that were show stoppers but easy to find
and install, it built and installed the driver with no problems.

I've no experience w/ nvidia-installer myself, but you probably just
need the header files. An easy way to install the headers for your
running kernel is:
 # apt-get install module-assistant
 # m-a prepare

There are also prebuilt nvidia drivers for this kernel in
etch/non-free, but perhaps you need something newer. You might have
luck finding someone w/ nvidia-installer experience on this list.

my "/etc/apt/sources.list" looks like:

Can somebody please help me with:

1. Is there a mirror somewhere that has these packages?
2. Have I missed something vitally important??

Thanking you.

Disk drive recovery help

2009-04-07 Thread tony mollica

Hello.

Need a little help with a disk drive.

Until today, my external storage drive was working fine using Debian 4.0
(latest updates)
and ext2 file system. It's a 180Gig drive divided into 3 partitions, 1
primary and 2 logical,

sdg1, sdg5 and sdg6, for example.

I did two things, after which the drive acts unusual. It powers up but
takes a few minutes,
then automounts only the third partition(sdg6). I can mount the second
partition

manually(sdg5), but the first, and only, primary partiton(sdg1) isn't found.

cfdisk shows all partitions normally. I can e2fsck 5 and 6, but not 1.
dmesg shows a read error in the sector that partition 1 begins.
Can't access sdg1 at all, tried several different disk programs to
access the

partition.

Back to the two things. I tried to change the disk label,
unsuccessfully, and there
was a call to check the partition, so I unmounted it and e2fsck'd it.
Now I can only
get to 2 of the 3 partitions. Everything seems to be there, but it
won't recognize
the first and only primary partition. All the sector numbers seem to
match using

gpart, lde, cfdisk and fdisk.

Looking for suggestions to find the error in the first partition.

thanks

-
tony

I can mount the second
partition
manually(sdg5), but the first, and only, primary partiton(sdg1) isn't
found.

cfdisk shows all partitions normally. I can e2fsck 5 and 6, but not 1.
dmesg shows a read error in the sector that partition 1 begins. Can't
access sdg1 at all, tried several different disk programs to access the
partition.

Back to the two things. I tried to change the disk label, unsuccessfully,
 and there
was a call to check the partition, so I unmounted it and e2fsck'd it. Now
I can only
get to 2 of the 3 partitions. Everything seems to be there, but it won't
recognize
the first and only primary partition. All the sector numbers seem to
match using
gpart, lde, cfdisk and fdisk.

Looking for suggestions to find the error in the first partition.

Just to clear up a misconception, you have to have a primary
partition to hold the logical partitions. So, make sure we are talking
about things correctly. With fdisk do you see both primaries with one
being shown as extended (and containing the logical partitions)?

With the partition you are having trouble with unmounted, do you get an
error message when you try to fsck it?

Yes, the necessary partitions are there. fdisk, cfdisk and testdisk all
show
the right stuff. Partition 1 is the problem, the other 2 I can mount
normally.
If I fsck part1 I get the message that no sdg1 exists (the drive is an
external

USB that used to have sdg1, sdg5 and sdg6). Testdisk even finds all the
files. I thinking that there is some sort of hardware read error that's
keeping

the OS from recognizing the partition for mounting. I'm running some tests
on the drive but I'll post that short error message from fsck shortly.

thanks,

Tony, I think you missed my point. In order for there to be three usable

partitions on your system there has to be a physical partition to hold
logical partitions 5 and 6, you must have two primary partitions.

Post the output from fdisk -l.

Thorny, I know what you're asking, I just wasn't clear. But yes, the
partition

is there (or here):

fdisk -l output:

Disk /dev/sdg: 184.4 GB, 184416067584 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 22420 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdg1 * 1729558597056 83 Linux
/dev/sdg27296 22420 121491562+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sdg57296 1459058597056 83 Linux
/dev/sdg6 14591 2242062894443+ 83 Linux

I'm having no problems with the extended partitions, only the first
primary. All the number look good, just doesn't recognize sdg1
for mounting, or for fsck.

# fsck /dev/sdg1
fsck 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006)
e2fsck 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006)
fsck.ext2: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sdg1

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193

All the partitioning software and disk utilities find the partitions.
The first

primary partition is not found or recognized. Tried backup superblocks
too, but if it doesn't find the device, it won't find the data.

All the data is there, I can see it with testdisk, I just can't retrieve
or do

anything with it.

thanks,

Mousewheel operation - successful update

2014-06-17 Thread tony mollica

Found the problem and it was not a config issue.
Used xev to view the button numbers and there was no action for left tilt.
Used some compressed air and a few taps on the desk with the mouse and
all is working again. 'Percussive maintenance' it think it's called.

***previous post***

For the last two days I've been trying to find some information on this
problem:
I used to be able to use the mousewheel left-right to page back and
forward in
history in Firefox. Unfortunately, I upgraded three things at one time:
 the usual

Debian updates, Firefox from 29 to 30 and Mate from 1.6 to 1.8, and now I'm
unable to find the location of the setting to make this work again. I'd
appreciate

any suggestions on where to look to fix this. I'm thinking Firefox but the
mousewheel parameters are a bit cryptic.

thanks,
tjm
