'nslookup', 'traceroute' in debian

login & .bash_profile questions
I've RTFM, but I'm still not sure what the best place to put stuff I want to happen at login is. Is it safe to append stuff like 'alias ls='ls --color'' to the .bash_profile? Will that even work? .bashrc has that in it, uncommented, but it doesn't kick in. I'd appreciate any help.
permission denied on .bashrc ??
I reconfigured both ~./bash_profile and ~/.bashrc to work properly, and they do- ls is automatically aliased as --color, etc. But at login, I still get a '~/.bash_profile: permission denied' error. When I look at the permissions, I'm listed as the owner. I did these changes as an ordinary user, not as root. Any advice is seriously appreciated. Tom
mail configuration questions
Is there a single .*rc kind of file where I establish the info for my POP3 server (their DNS #, url, etc.) and that is referred to by mail, fetchmail, emacs, etc? Or do I need to put that info in *each* .*rc file? Retrieving mail via http is non problem, but I want to use emacs. I've read a bunch of the 'Fine' Manuals, and pored over the fetchmail and emacs websites, but I'm just not seeing it. Finally, if anyone has such an.*rc file which sets up a POP3 mail connection, I would love a copy. Thanks again for the remarkable help, everybody.
Need advice: Compaq Presarios and Debian
I had Red Hat installed on my Presario as a dual boot system. It had its own hard drive, and worked somewhat, but eventually it flashed the BIOS and the whole motherboard had to be replaced. I was told (tersely) by Compaq Support that Presarios are NOT GOOD with Linux. But, I WANT LINUX. Namely, I want Debian. Anybody know about Presarios and Debian?
X-windows in startup
I had unsuccessfully configured X, set it aside for a day. Rebooted the machine, only to have X start automatically. Problem is, X isn't working beyond letting me enter username/password. C-ALT-D only gets me back to the initial GUI login! IS there a way to escape out of this during the boot process?
clock-chip autoprobe problems
Using xf86config, when I run the autoprobe for a clock chip line, the screen blanks, then comes back with an 'autoprobe call failed' error line. Meanwhile, X will kind of start, but all I get is a blue screen and an immobile pointer. Is there a line I can just insert in a config file? Is my clock chip something I can ascertain just by looking at the actual card? Thanks for everybod'ys help.
MKBOOT problems
Thanks to everyone for the ongoing responses to my newbie dreck. Why, when I MKBOOT VMLINUZ-2.2.12, would the system come back to me on three different BRAND NEW disks with a "write protected or other error"? I really doubt it's the disks. Is there a known problem with that version?
Making a bootable LILO floppy
How would I save a LILO configuration to a floppy's MBR, so as to run LILO from the floppy? Thanks in advance!

Anybody know much about pros/cons of grub for a boot manager? Thanks! Tom Schuetz [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Can't find /etc/X11/*
I'm trying to configure X11, but can't find /etc/X11, even though xf86config says it's writing its configuration to that directory. Also, once the X-server is started, how do I safely shut it down from a command line? When I hit ^alt-DEL, it just brings me back to the XDM login; I can get other consoles, but when I try to startx I get told the server is already active for another console- so how do I shut it down? Huge thanks to all the patient deb gods out there. Tom Schuetz [EMAIL PROTECTED]
X failure-- Help, please....
Two things: I'm running potato, and I know my mouse is a ps/2, but it won't respond at all when I'm running the VGA server. As for the SVGA server, I get this on startx: X: exec of usr/bin/X11/XF86_SVGA failed _X11TranSocketUNIXConnect: can't connect: errno = 111 giving up. xinit: connection refused (errno 111) unable to connect to X server xinit: No such process (errno 3): server error So, I've checked, and the SVGA server exists where it should. I've gone into the XF86config file, but don't really know what to look for! I would really appreciate some advice. Tom

Tom Schuetz wrote: > Two things: > > I'm running potato, and I know my mouse is a ps/2, but it won't respond at > all when I'm running the VGA server. You might check the Debian Mail archives for the past couple of months; there's been quite a bit of discussion about mice and X lately. For a short answer (but perhaps unsatisfactory in the long run), disable gpm if you have it running, and in XF86Config specify that your mouse is on "/dev/psaux" and that the protocol is set to "PS/2". I've had it designated PS/2 on /dev/psaux from the beginning. This is why I am baffled about this. Moreover, I have been watching the other X postings recently, and I only bother y'all because I've not seen anything like what's going on in my system. Thanks for the advice, by the way. I do appreciate it. > As for the SVGA server, I get this on startx: > > X: exec of usr/bin/X11/XF86_SVGA failed > _X11TranSocketUNIXConnect: can't connect: errno = 111 > giving up. > > xinit: connection refused (errno 111) unable to connect to X server > xinit: No such process (errno 3): server error > > > So, I've checked, and the SVGA server exists where it should. Newbie Shell Script Problems
Could someone please give me a hint re. how to get a functional shell script? sshd problem
I can no longer ssh to my Debian box, or even ssh localhost on it. It worked fine for weeks; I'm not sure what I might have changed to mess it up. On startup and shutdown, there are still "Starting" and "Stopping sshd" messages. I've tried this both as user and root. Nada. I did recently install VNC, which is now working (unsecurely). apt-get and 'deb file:\'
I used to have debian 2.2 installed on one box, and at that time I was able to 'apt-get install foo.deb', where 'foo.deb' was any file I'd just put into my working directory. The directory didn't was never mentioned in 'sources.list'. Now, I'm working on a different machine, still 2.2, and when I do 'apt-get ./foo.deb', it goes through it's database check, but then says "could not find package". I've tried putting 'deb file:\home\tom' into sources.list, but I get a "malformed sources.list" complaint. I've also R'd the FM, and now, as a last resort, I appeal to debian-user. Here is the dmesg: hdb: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error } hdb: read_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } hdb: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error } hdb: read_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } hdb: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error } hdb: read_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } hdb: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error } hdb: read_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } ide0: reset: success hdb: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error } hdb: read_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } end_request: I/O error, dev 03:40 (hdb), sector 0 Is this hopeless? gpart doesn't seem to be up to this. Any ideas would be most appreciated. -- Tom Schuetz | <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> "VI VI VI: The editor of the beast."
#pound-sign files# what are they?
I notice that when I stop a process, I sometimes get a file from it like this: #foo.txt# or #.foo. What are these? Are they safe to rm? Thanks in advance. Tom
post-upgrade sysvinit problem
I've upgraded to woody, and things work, but startx was gone. Ok, no problem, I apt-got xbase-clients. That is interrupted by the following: dpkg: error processing sysvinit (--configure): subprocess post-installation script killed by signal / (Segmentation fault) Errors were encountered while processing: sysvinit E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) So...having searched the debian-user archives fruitlessly, AND found that my sysvinit man page is broken, I appeal to ye wizards. cdrom: "Media not found"
Hi, i'm running Potato 2.2.17. My cdrom stopped working yesterday, for no apparent reason. The error messages vary. Usually, it's "No media found" but sometimes it says something about a bad superblock and trying to mount a logical drive. I'm stumped on how to remedy this. I've tried both home-brewed cd-r's and the "official" Potato discs, both of which worked fine until yesterday. Below is my fstab and dmesg. *** # /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # /dev/hda1 / ext2defaults,errors= remount-ro 0 1 /dev/hda2 noneswapsw 0 0 proc/proc procdefaults 0 0 /dev/fd0/floppy autodefaults, user, noauto 0 0 /dev/cdrom /cdrom iso9660 defaults,ro,user, noauto 0 0 /dev/hdb1/home ext2rw 0 2 ** * Linux version 2.2.17 ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 2.95.2 2313 ( Debian GNU/Linux)) #1 Sun Jun 25 09:24:41 EST 2000 Console: colour VGA+ 80x25 Calibrating delay loop... 119.60 BogoMIPS Memory: 126920k/131072k available (1732k kernel code, 416k reserved, 1864k data, 140k init) Checking if this processor honours the WP bit even in supervisor mode...
