dselect thru SOCKS4 firewall
After installing libsocks4_4.3.beta2-3 and socks-clients_4.3.beta2-3, setting up /etc/socks.conf, and setting the SOCKS_NS and SOCKS_SERVER environment variables I can rftp through the SOCKS firewall to the internet. dftp and dselect do not connect to servers on the internet though. After upgrading to dftp_3.2-1, dpkg_1.4.0.19, and dpkg-ftp_1.4.0.19 dftp and dselect still do not connect to servers on the internet. After linking /bin/ftp to /bin/rftp dftp now works. dselect still does not connect to servers on the internet though. How do I get dselect to work through a SOCKS4 firewall? dselect thru SOCKS4 firewall
I have not found a way to use dselect through a socks 4.2beta server. Can anyone help me get it working? I do have dftp_3.2-1 working through the firewall. If I cannot get dselect to work directly is it possible to: use dftp to get the new Packages files use dselect to choose which packages to upgrade/install use dftp to download and install selected packages. To get dftp to work I had to install unstable software to my 1.3.1 installation: libsocks4_4.3.beta2-3 socks-clients_4.3.beta2-3 dftp_3.2-1 I also installed: dpkg_1.4.0.19 dpkg-ftp_1.4.0.19 There are a few other packages these are dependent on too but they are obviated by the dpkg command. Additionally I had to: set up /etc/socks.conf set the SOCKS_NS and SOCKS_SERVER environment variables and make a symbolic link from ftp to rftp It is quite nice to have dftp working so updating currently installed packages is easy. I would still like to have dselect working so installing new packages can be easy. socksified clients
Are tcp/ip clients (ftp, telnet, ...) already socksified in Debian 1.3.1? My tcp/ip connection is behind a firewall that uses CSTC version 4.2beta. What do I need to do to get through it to the internet? So far I have only found information on setting up a Linux machine to be a firewall. Debian is a great distribution
I just finished installing Debian 1.3.1 on my home pc. With just a handful of floppies with images and packages downloaded from the internet I was able to successfully compile a customized kernel and connect to the internet with ppp on the first try. Now with dftp and/or dpkg-ftp and/or dselect I will be able to add more packages and keep them up to date quite easily. This is a much better mechanism than any other distribution I've tried. I like dselect too. It gives me a great amount of control and manages dependencies. I like it better than the mechanisms I use for SunOS, Solaris, and AIX. I also like the way restricted license software is clearly indicated. It will be quite easy to keep my machine 100% legal using Debian. I started using Linux in '92 so I didn't have to deal with the constant onslaught of low cost upgrades every few months. It just keeps getting better. Thanks to all who make this possible.
