Xlib: connection to ":?.?" refused by server
Hi all, Any idea what causes this message? : Xlib: connection to ":2.0" refused by server Xlib: Maximum number of clients reached Unable to open display I have googled and found very little on the subject. I found some info in this thread : http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2003/debian-user-200312/thrd9.html#06539 which suggests that this is controlled by a ulimit or a limit in the xserver itself. (changing these have no effect) OR : A broken app. I've narrowed down the suspect apps to a single one : xscreensaver xlsclients, lsof, ps afx and /proc/ didn't help at all. So my problem is that I need to now restart x every time after xscreensaver ran for an hour or more. I really like xscreensaver, and would like to keep it if possible. Could it be the nvidia driver. How do I narrow this down further. Debian Install
Greetings.. For those who have found installing Debian difficult in the past, well I recently downloaded the new Debian Installer (sarge-i366-businesscard.iso) and used it today to install a new system. I have tried numerous times unsuccessfully to install a system (with working GUI) prior to this time. My install today went without a hitch and the operations of the installer were much improved than past ones.. I installed a 'unstable' system, which installed kde3.2 and various other up-to-date packages, very easily.. For those who always wanted a Debian System, go for it..!! You can get it from Debian Homepage. I too now have a fully function Debian system and very impressed with it.. (and that apt-get tool.. how powerful is that!!) WELL DONE to the various maintainers of the Installer..!! -- Regards - Stef VK5HSX -= Support Open Source Software =- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". You just insmod the module for ZIP. Its in the section of the scsi modules (yes, also if your ZIP is not the scsi version, but just the parallel port flavour!) Then you can mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip if your ZIP disk is an ordinary dos one and you first did a mkdir /mnt/zip. Stef

Well, you can read one of the fine books about UNIX (My favourite is 'UNIX for the impatient'). But I think that approach would be rather boring. I suggest, you take one of the standard installations the installation program proposes to you. This should give you a rather well behaving System. As you get acquainted with Linux, you may want to tweak some tiny bits of your installation according to your personal taste. Stef

Where would I find that, and what would the syntax be > for insmod? If you start your installation from the rescue disk, you will get to a stage where you can choose the modules you want to insert. As soon as you choosen the ZIP module in the scsi section, you can switch to the second console with and mount /dev/sda4 /somewhere. If you don't find the ZIP module in the list, it may be that it already is included in the kernel and you can mount the ZIP disk right away. Stef
Re: installing debian from a running linux system
> is there any way i can avoid having to boot through disquette? i am having Its puzzling: You can install Debian from MS DOS very easily, but there seems to be no easy way to do this directly from an existing Linux system. We have a Mailserver without a floppy or CD drive. Someone mailed me, I could install the base system myself on the empy partition, and do some more fiddling around. I prefered to install a floppy drive from an older computer into the server. This way I have also some redundancy in booting: If I fondle with my harddisk too much, I can still try to save i using the rescue disk. Still a easy way to install directly from an existing Linux partition would be neat. Stef

Our Mailserver runs with Slackware. I want to change to Debian. The problem is the following: There is no CD-ROM, no floppy disk and no DOS installed. smail delivers same mail several times
I use Debian 1.3.1 and smail configured to handle virtual mailhosts. For one virtuel host I have a mailinglist. Since some days, some of the messages sent to the list are delivered several times to the same people. What can I do to find out what the cause of the problem is? Stef

I had a look into /var/spool/smail/msglog there were messages concerning the messages who have been delivered multiple times. The messages start with several lines of Xsucceed: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> parent: Xsucceed: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> parent: <<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>> Xsucceed: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> parent: <<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>> Xsucceed: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> parent: <<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>> ... and end with a line saying: Xdefer: parent: <<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>> reason: ... One reason was: (ERR172) transport smtp: no connection to remote SMTP server: 499 read error from remote SMTP process another reason: (ERR148) transport smtp: connect: Connection refused So it seems, that there is a bug in smail: When there is a problem with an address in a list, and it has to resend the message, it sends the message to the whole list again instead of just to the erroneous address? Does anybody know about that problem? Stef

If I remember right (don't have the manual around...), stoping after LI means, that lilo cannot find the kernel-image on the disk. So it seems, like somehow the geometry is translated in a different way. But booting from floppy and issueing a /sbin/lilo should solve the problem I guess. Stef
