Re: compatibility in debian
Hi, you can use openoffice.org as office suite (yes, you can read your msword documents). There are also some applications for graphics (e.g. gimp). Check it here: http://packages.debian.org/stable/graphics/ Regarding the games, I know there is linux version for Unreal tournament... If you are thinking about switching to debian-gnu linux, then you should change a basic windows-conception: using linux/gnu gives you the power to choose. Therefore, you have a set of alternatives for every task you want to accomplish with your system. It is also convenient if you start to forget windows applications you cannot (so far) find in linux (iexplorer, outlook express, msword, etc.). Hi David, well, first of all, I am not in Spain. I am living in UK (I know, I know, my email address.) :) I assume you have the same keybord as I have, where the \ key is between the F12 and ` keys. video card and kde
Hi everybody I've got an ATI Rage 128PF video card. I am running woody with kernel version 2.4.18bf24. According to the manuals, it seems that I should use the r128 driver for my xfree86 configuration. However, the xserver it does not work. When I try to use a desktop environment, it gives me the error "no screens found". I tried also with "ati" and it did not work either. Then I choose "vesa" and it worked ok, butonly gnome. I cannot load kde which is very funny. The problem is that it does not return any error; it starts to load it and suddenly freezes. I've checked the whole xserver-xfree86 configuration again and I cannot work out why I am able to use gnome (and fluxbox as well) but I cannot load kde. any ideas are more than welcome Rodrigo -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: installing new kernel-image (the game)
you are right, my apologies the computer is a novatech laptop P4 processor, woody installed with kernel 2.2.20 (trying to update to 2.4.18-686), I have a SiS7012 sound card, SiS900 ethernet card, etc; the important thing (in my view) is that I've got a winmodem from (also) SiS. Re: Powerpoint reader
Hi, I DO think openoffice.org is an absolutly great piece of software; I DO work with openoffice.org everyday (mostly reading ms-documents). So I think you misunderstood me (or I did not express myself clearly). Here the listmet Stan (I am afraid I forgot his surname) asked if anybody knew applications able to read .ppt documents. My answer both sort and concise: www.openoffice.org His reply was whether I knew something lighter (matthew has written about it, too), so I told him that I did not, but that if anybody knew it, I would be happy to share such knowledge. Why? because I work with a pentium 4 and 512 MG RAM. but not all my friends or linux users work with those specifications. that's way I said the sentence about the alternative to openoffice.org anyway, I hope this clarify the matter cheers. rodrigo -- martin f krafft <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote (on Friday, 06 December 2002, 10:43 PM +0100): > also sprach Rodrigo Agerri <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> [2002.12.06.1043 +0100]: > > if anyone there find an alternative to openoffice.org, could you let me > > know it, please? > > why not openoffice.org? it's quite good software and will only get > better if you use it and report problems. I'm not the OP, but I will present a reason: If you're on an older machine (<550MHz), or have less than 128MB RAM, or haven't tuned your hard drive to utilize DMA and other features that speed access, OpenOffice.org is a real pig to use. My main machine is a 366Mhz Celeron. Until this summer, I had 96MB in it, and hadn't tuned my hard drive. OpenOffice (and StarOffice) were so slow and took so many resources as to be virtually useless. (Compare this to ApplixOffice, which loads in a matter of seconds and uses less memory than Galeon, and you can see which Office suite won me over.) I upped my memory to 256MB mid-summer. OOo opened faster, but was still too slow and used too many resources. I tuned my hard drive a couple months ago. OOo opens *much* faster, but still on the order of >20seconds. Since I now need to occasionally send documents to people in .doc format, I use it, but I'd prefer it weren't so resource intensive. (On my wife's new 1.7GHz, 256MB machine with the hard drive tuned, it takes but a couple seconds. She uses it all the time.) So, the point I'm trying to make is that I feel the OP is perfectly correct to seek out an alternative to OOo if he wants to find something leaner and faster for his hardware. I just wish I could point him to something! -- Matthew Weier O'Phinney [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? The same with the Encode tab where you have to choose an encoder. For example, lame for mp3 or oggenc for .ogg check you have installed the ripper (cdda2wav, cdparanoia) and encoder (oggenc or lame) you have selected. cheers -- Rodrigo Agerri Dept. of Computing City University, London Tel: 0044 (0) 20 7040 0292 http://www.soi.city.ac.uk/~au700 pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

Regarding gnome, try "apt-cache search gnome | less" and install what you need. You need to activate input.o and mousedev.o under "Input core support" section. Then under "USB support" section, load "Support for USB" (usbcore.o), "Preliminary USB device filesystem" (CONFIG_USB_DEVICEFS), "UHCI" or "OHCI", "USB Human Interface Device (full HID) support" (CONFIG_USB_HID, hid.o), and "HID input layer support" (CONFIG_USB_HIDINPUT) and your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 should look like this: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Generic Mouse" Driver "mouse" Option "SendCoreEvents" "true" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" Option "Buttons" "5" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection cheers, Rodrigo -- Res publica non dominetur signature.asc Description: Digital signature

installing new kernel-image
hi everybody in order to install a new kernel in stable, I did apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-686 I configured /etc/lilo.conf keeping the older kernel (2.2.20) such as: image=/vmlinuz label=linux read-only image=/vmlinuz.old label=kernel-2.2.20 read-only I then executed lilo and got this output: Warning: Int 0x13 function 8 and function 0x48 return different head/sector geometries for BIOS drive 0x80 Added linux * Added kernel-2.2.20 if I try to boot with the new kernel, I get kernel panic (I still can boot with the old one) what did i forget? cheers rodrigo -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
