firefox/iceweasel strange problem
Hi There, I am not sure of what is happening today on my debian testing but firefox/iceweasel is acting really weird, if I check google the google logo is a pic of a woman on firefox/icewease but on epiphany or iceape appears ok. Is there anyone experiencing similar behavior or am just flipping for my lack of sleep? (also have problems on google mail and other sites ...) Re: OT - power off probs
Piers Kittel wrote: Hello all, Am having a problem with my computer not quite relevant to the list (but it runs Debian hey... ;)) but not sure exactly where to ask so I guess this list is better than most. This concerns my computer turning itself off occasionally and refusing to power on unless I move the "Reset CMOS" jumper with the power lead in - it won't work if I move the jumper without the lead plugged in. Anyway. Setup is a Slot 1 motherboard with a P3 666MHz at 133MHz FSB processor, with 256 meg RAM on a single stick, Geforce MX4000 graphics card and an Intel PCI network card. It also has a floppy drive and runs 1 fan - the CPU fan. No hard drive, no optical drives, or anything else. I decided to swop 2 cases over - the above go into a nice case while some "server" (for small values of) hardware go into the ugly case. In the original cases, both computers works just fine. The "server" is an EPIA MII 12000 motherboard with 2 x DVB tuners, a 200GB WD hard drive, 512MB RAM on a single stick, DVD RW drive. It also runs 2 case fans and a CPU fan. So the server stuff goes out of the nice case and into the ugly case, and the P3 666MHz stuff goes into the nice case. The reason I do this is that the P3 stuff will be under my TV while the "server" stuff will be hidden away. So I want to see a nice case rather than an ugly case :) The ceveat of the nice case is that it has a proprietary 240w ATX power supply. The case is advertised to take Mini-ITX boards along with standard ATX boards. I figured that without the hard drive or optical drive, or the dual tuners, the P3 stuff should use less leccy and the 240w PSU should be enough. So. Put the server stuff in the old case, and put the P3 stuff in the nice case. Server works fine. P3 stuff works fine, but turns itself off randomly - tho usually when something happens such as X starting, or starting to play a video, or even pressing a keyboard key. It then refuses to start again - pulling the lead for a while, putting it back in, or removing the battery, or move the clear CMOS jumper, or push the on/off button - anything unless I leave the power lead and move the clear CMOS jumper and as soon as I take the jumper block off it boots up. Then a few minutes later, powers itself off. I took a spare 350w PSU and this problem doesn't occur. I suppose this means the 240w PSU isn't up to the job? If so, I'm rather surprised - how does the P3 board on its own overwhelm the 240w PSU while a mini-ITX board with everything on (firewire, PCMCIA slot, CF slot, TV out, VGA, sound, the whole works) and dual DVB tuners and hard drive use up less power? Is that possible? Is there any simple (heh) way to work out how much usage those 2 set ups draws from the PSU? If this is the case, would getting a slot 1 motherboard with onboard sound and LAN help? Or would I be wasting my time? Or is it best to try and upgrade the PSU to 300w - the case comes in 2 options - 240w or 300w PSU - the latter wasn't available until recently. I might try to get the company to sell me a 300w PSU. But will the 300w PSU help? Or is the board broken? Very unlikely I know. Thanks very much for your help in advance Regards - Piers IMHO The PSU is faulty rather than power consumption or at least that was the case in similar situations at my work. Old PSUs tend to accumulate dust inside them, and that occasionally generate short circuits which also tend to get faulty components and so on However I also had a similar case with a faulty mobo also due to short circuits. device-mapper error
Hi there, I "upgraded" my Debian-testing to unstable, I had several problems and I managed to resolve most of them. However I still have some problems with one thing, my third hard-drive cannot be mounted. libc broken?
Hi! Suppose that when I was trying to apt-get install imagemagick and upgrading "some" libraries, one of the libraries was libc6... and was not completely upgradedit might be broken giving as a result an useless linux installationisn't it? In fact, the booting process just freezes! 1.- how can I check which was the last package tried to install (apt-log? dpkg-something?) 2.-In case I have a libc6 or akind, is it there any way to fix it without installing everything from scratch? thanks talueguito raul -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Not booting
The boot process of my linux-debian-knoppix machine stops almost at the end Last change was: I was trying to apt-get imagemagick apt-get asked to download and install several libraries. I gave "Y". After a long while, the configuration process seems to be freezed at some partI tried to kill -9, nothing happened. I have to leave and so shutdown...it shutdown clean, but When I tried to boot again it freezes (I'm sending the last part of the boot process) I could enter again with the knoppix CD. I mounted (rw) the / of the HD. I chroot to the / of the HD, and run apt-get -f install libc6 ( thought this was one of the last downloaded library). everything went ok. (exit, unmount) and reboot... everything is the same! I don't want to reinstall all from scratch, I've been working a lot with this machine in this configuration and put and take out a lot of software Questions: 1.-How can I check what what other libraries are broken? 2.- Is there any other way to see what is going wrong with the boot procces (besides the demesg)? 3.- any clue how to fix whatever it may be ;-) thanks talueguito raul -- RAUL MONTAGNE Laboratorio de Fisica Teorica y Computacional Phone +55-81 3274 8450Phone +55-81 3274 0359 Recife Pernambuco Brasil -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Congress has also passed some broadly scoped laws favoring those who dominate this industry (http://www.riaa.org/Copyright-Laws-4.cfm). Basically, there's a lot of complexity here, and uless we can express the underlying concepts clearly and meaningfully to an otherwise uncaring public I think we can anticipate an ever increasing flood of random restrictions on the legality of software development. I don't think that TCPA will kill open software. But I do think that it's part of an ongoing effort to erode the freedoms which are behind open software. In general, I agree with John's point of view. However, before reporting that something about libc is broken, it's worthwhile doing a certain amount of research. And, if it's feasable to check the bug archives, you should check those as well. http://www.debian.org/Bugs (skip down a bit, enter the package name, then browse). But that's a recommendation, not an iron-clad rule. Once you've successfully reported some real bugs, I think we should trust your judgement some, too. If you find yourself in the akward position of having information that looks like a significant bug, but not having a system which is capable of checking the bug-tracking system for outstanding reports against that bug, it's sometimes still worthwhile filing that bug report. There's a certain amount of judgement that's required here. In addition to the tip by Wichert, I'd like to warn that apt-get dist-upgrade is designed to uninstall less important packages if that would let a more important package upgrade to a new version. In my opinion, these semantics are only worthwhile on a relatively new installation where you're trying to work out the wrinkles. apt-get upgrade semantics are considerably safer. -- Raul
Need help configuring postfix
Hi, I'm probably just being stupid, but I can't figure out how to configure postfix. How do you configure postfix so that most of the time mail is delivered directly, but some of the time it's delivered to a specific smtp server. Also, it must deliver most mail in my primary mail domain remotely -- unless there's a local email username which corresponds to the local part of the email address, those should be delivered locally. So, [EMAIL PROTECTED] is delivered locally, and [EMAIL PROTECTED] but [EMAIL PROTECTED] is delivered remotely to the mx for domain.org. [Also, I need to be able to run a script which toggles delivery of remote messages between the usual mx rules and smarthost rules, but that's not so urgent.] I could probably figure this out if I sat down with the documentation for a while and played with it, but at the moment I don't have an environment where it's very safe to experiment. [It's got some tools installed on it which I need to address some other problems, but it's sending mail to root which winds up going to a number of people.] Thanks, -- Raul

Likewise. I've got some boxes I put together using "unstable", and I don't trust "frozen" enough to upgrade them. I was hoping to upgrade them before release, but it looks like that's just not going to happen. I think this is a bad move for the case where email return address is forged and commercial email gives you an 800 number or some such. Best workaround I've been able to think up for the general case is to give people an md5-ish token based on their email address and some local bits. Set up an autoresponder to hand out tokens (so only people with valid return addresses can get them) and bounce messages through the autoresponder if they don't have a good token. Unfortunately, this is more appropriate to mailing lists than personal messages. [Mailing list can remind user of their token in every message -- X-Token: (or Token: if IANA approves).] On the third hand, most of the spams I've examined recently have had unforged return addresses. And an argument could be made that use of an forged return address by a commercial entity for advertising purposes is false advertising (and thus subject to legal action). -- Raul
Re: How to remove a user?
Andreas Wehler > A> After searching a while for a program or script to completely > A> remove a user I didn't found something and did it per hand. Is > A> this neccessary? Thanks. Removing a user is something that should be done with thought. In some circumstances (user never existed), it's just a matter of removing the user's home directory and the entries in /etc/passwd and /etc/group. Other times (when the user really exists) it may be more appropriate to change the user's shell to /bin/false (or something hand crafted along the lines of /usr/local/bin/why-your-account-is-turned-off-user) for a period of time before removing stuff. Also, if the user really existed, there may be files outside the home directory that also need to be dealt with (e.g. /var/spool/mail/user, or /home/friend/shared/foo). What "dealt with" means depends on the situation... -- Raul
Checking if the network is up
Luis Francisco Gonzalez: > Is there any way of checking whether the network is responding so > that I only run popclient when it is? That usually depends on what exactly you mean by "the network". If you're using diald or some such, take a look at the result of `route`. If the network is always "logically up" on your machine, but frequently not "physically up" you'll need to probe for a response from some remote system. Take a look at the man page for ping and read about the -c and -n options. You'll need to run grep on the result because the presence or absence of a remote host won't affect ping's return code. -- Raul

William S. Gribble: > If you don't want feedback about the tools, might I suggest that > you give up their maintenance to someone who does? Dselect as it > exists is nothing more or less than a working prototype of the tool > it needs to be. That's not the point. Ian has had feedback. Lot's of feedback. Lots, and lots of feedback. The issues are well known (and he pointed this out in his email message). He's also asked for help on dealing with some of the issues. I don't know how much he's gotten. This is a big project, and some of these issues are non-trivial. Giving up completely at the first sign of difficulty isn't going to solve anything. If you want to help, I think you ought to be able to without having Ian stop working on that part of the project. IF it turns out that someone else is capable of managing dpkg/dselect and is doing significant development, etc., *then* is the time to talk about Ian stepping out of the way. At the moment, Ian is about as obstructionist as a fifteen lane through-way (and heading the right way). -- Raul

Actually, I'd say that grep bin/ would be better than grep bin (without the slash). Similarly, for documentation, you might want to use something like egrep 'man/|info/|doc/'. Or, failing that, do a web search on the topic you're interested in. I agree that we could do better about indexing or cross indexing our documentation. But anything better than grepping the list of files provided by the package really has to be done on a case-by-case basis. [Do you understand why? It's because further improvements must be in the form of better content.] -- Raul

Unable to handle kernel paging request for dpkg
The following problem happened while doing an 'apt-get upgrade -u': The first run of apt-get upgrade crashed with a segmentation fault after downloading all the packages and while unpacking and setting them up. After the segfault I run the command again, the result was no output on the terminal and apt not returning, hitting CTRL-C did not cause the process to be killed. kill -9 did not kill the process either.
