usign cbq.init to control ftp traffic

2003-01-21 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello list,

I'd like to use cbq.init script to control the ftp download traffic, however,
since ftp transfer the data via a dynamic port, it is not possible to use
cbq.init script to shape the download traffic, Actually I wonder if tc
command can achieve this purpose.

Any idea?

ssh and running command

2002-10-06 Thread Patrick Hsieh

Hello list,

I'd like to execute a certain command upon someone connect to my server
with "ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED]". I will not authenticate the visitor in
the ssh session, that is, anyone can do "ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED]" in
order to execute my self-defined command or shell script. Is there any
way to configure ssh to achieve this? Additionally, If the
self-defined command or shell script is pertty easy, say,

#!/bin/sh

export PATH=/bin:/usr/bin && \
echo "Hello there!" && exit 0;

Is there also security problem?

How to reset the TX/RX value of ifconfig output?
Why is it smart to save the count to /etc/init.d/networking before
resetting? Can you give an example?

Hello Jimmy,

If you have no problem to compile kernel on Redhat, usually you will feel at
home on Debian. Here is the steps:

1. use apt-cache search to search the kernel source package you need:
e.g. apt-cache search kernel-source

2. download and install the kernel source package
apt-get install kernel-source-2.4.19

3. cd /usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.19

4. make menuconfig

5. make-kpkg kernel_image
(this will build a kernel image package at /usr/src, just use
dpkg -i kernel-image-.deb to install the kernel image package.

Note: you may need to install "make", "gcc", "libncurses5-dev" to execute make
menuconfig and further compilation.

If you'd like to learn more about debian-specific kernel compilation, read
make-kpkg man pages or kernel-package documents.

Good luck!

in this case, I guess the kernel found HZ=100 is defined in the config file
but actually the HZ value in the system was 0. Hence it complained.

It seems to be a harmless message, but very annoying. Is there any reason why
the kernel maintainers keep to print the message since it is not really
harmful? Why not send to syslog or somewhere else?

Oops! This is not the linux kernel problem, but the "procps" package problem.
This is probably a work-around:

1. $ apt-get source procps
2. $ cd procps-VERSION
3. edit proc/sysinfo.c
165c165
< fprintf(stderr, "Unknown HZ value! (%ld) Assume %ld.\n", h, Hertz);
---
> /* fprintf(stderr, "Unknown HZ value! (%ld) Assume %ld.\n", h, Hertz);
*/

4. $ fakeroot debian/rules binary
5. # dpkg -i ../procps_VERSION_i386.deb
6. # dpkg -i ../libproc-dev_VERSION_i386.deb

Hope this helps!

pptpd and MPPE encrypt

2002-11-18 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello list,

I installed pptpd 1.1.2-1.2 on Woody and patched the linux kernel as
well as pptpd to support MPPE encryption. The following is my
pptpd-options file:

home:/home/pahud# grep -v ^# /etc/ppp/pptpd-options | grep -v ^$
debug
name pptp
domain ezplay.tv
auth
-chap
-chapms
+chapms-v2
mppe-40
mppe-128
mppe-stateless
netmask 255.255.255.255
proxyarp
lock

When my Windows client connect the pptpd, I use sniffit to capture the
packet data on device ppp0 of the pptpd server. The sniffit shows the
cleartext data. Is there anything wrong? How can I ensure the PPTP
encrypts all of the transfering data with MPPE?

rebuild all installed .deb

2002-11-21 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello list,

Is there any way to rebuild all the installed .deb package with
gcc 3.2 and some optimization configurations?

Gentoo Linux has a very idea to build the system from base. I tried
apt-build in Debian, but it doesn't seem to be able to build libraries.
I wonder if it can build gcc, binutils and glibc, etc.

Is it possible to use "dpkg -l" to list all installed .deb and then
use apt-build to fetch the source, unpack, rebuild into .deb and
reinstall all the packages? Then the machine will be much more optimized.
(Pentium3 optimized v.s. i386 optimized)

idea?

2002-12-04 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello list,

I've tried shaper in Debian woody but it seems to be only capable of the
shaping of outbound traffic. Is there any dummy script or utility that can
easily do the inbound/outbound traffic shaping?

Thank you.
I installed hotplug and compile kernel with hotplug support, reading the man

Re: is there any dummy bandwidth shaping script?

2002-12-04 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Does wondershaper still consume the full downstream bandwidth when it is
shaping the download traffic?

Limit download speed

This is slightly trickier as we can't really influence how fast the internet
ships us data. We can however drop packets that are coming in too fast,
which causes TCP/IP to slow down to just the rate we want. Because we don't
want to drop traffic unnecessarily, we configure a 'burst' size we allow at
higher speed.

Now, once we have done this, we have eliminated the downstream queue totally
(except for short bursts), and gain the ability to manage the upstream queue
with all the power Linux offers.

build an overloaded linux server

2002-12-09 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello list,

For experimental requirement, I want to build an overloaded linux server in
which openssh is binding tcp port 22. The criteria is, when a ssh client is
connecting to the sshd on the overloaded one, the sshd will take more than 60
seconds to respond.(that is, tcp socket established but the sshd hangs over
60 seconds)

Is there any trick to build this overloaded server?

DivX to VCD?

2002-12-13 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello list,

Is there anyone who has the experience in converting DivX file into VCD format
iso? I think it's possible to convert divx file into mpeg1 file, and
vcdtools may be capable of making it ito a iso image. I am asking here if
anyone have a one-liner example to do the job?Say, "mencoder |
 | mkisofs" something like this?

I hope I can convert the divx to vcd on-the-fly.

Ideas?

many packages need to be upgraded

2002-12-15 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello list,

I've been sticking to woody for a long time. Today I noticed there are some
packages need to be upgraded:

The following packages will be upgraded
  cpp-2.95 g++-2.95 gcc-2.95 libgd1 libstdc++2.10-dev libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2
  php4 php4-cgi php4-curl php4-imap php4-ldap php4-mysql php4-pear
13 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
Need to get 4868kB of archives. After unpacking 20.5kB will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

Is there any security issues about these packages or whatever? Basically the
stable release will not upgrade its packages unless there is security concern
or big problem. Can someone explain this?

Re: sharing CD-BURNER via iSCSI

2002-12-16 Thread Patrick Hsieh
I am also highly interested in iSCSI. I think CD-BUNER via iSCSI is possible,
but the cost , of course, will be very expensive. In addition, I wonder if
there is any iSCSI adapter well-supported under Linux?

I am also curious about the MySQL cluster delopyment over the iSCSI channel,
that is, multiple mysql servers share/mount the same storage device over
iSCSI. Is it a better solution than mysql servers with NFS mount data
storage?

upgrade mysql server with least downtime

2002-12-17 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello list,

I am planing to upgrade a running mysql server on woody to fix the recent
security issue. Is there any trick to make the service have least downtime
when upgrading the mysql server?

I was thinking if it is possible that I have two mysql daemons running on the
same machine(port 3306 and 3307) and share the same mysql data. When I
upgrade the 1st daemon, the iptables redirects the incoming tcp 3306
connection to tcp 3307, on which the secondary daemon is listening. When
finish upgrading, change the localhost iptables rules to dismiss the
redirection. Is it possible? Will I have locking problem with 2 daemons
sharing the same mysql data?

Any idea is highly welcome.

I am trying to configure the user resource restriction in

BTW, I checked the /etc/pam.d/login and /etc/pam.d/ssh file.
Both have this line in it:
sessionrequired pam_limits.so

Is there anything I missed?

postfix: how to apply uce control only to some accounts?

2002-09-18 Thread Patrick Hsieh

Hello list,

I have some UCE control rule in my postfix mail server. However, I'd
like the postfix not to apply the UCE to everyone by default, while have
a list who are willing to use UCE. In my main.cf, it looks something
list this

smtpd_client_restrictions = permit_mynetworks,
check_client_access regexp:/etc/postfix/access,
hash:/etc/postfix/lamers,
check_client_access regexp:/etc/postfix/clientcheck,
reject_unknown_client,
check_client_access regexp:/etc/postfix/openrelay,
reject_maps_rbl

In this case, all accounts in /etc/postfix/lamers will not be affected
by UCE rules while others will. This is not my goal. What I want is to
create a list, say /etc/postfix/paranoid and put some accounts in it to
make them use UCE rules, while leaving others untouched.

Is there any possible configuration or solution?

apache FollowSymLinks and SymLinksIfOwnerMatch question

2002-09-25 Thread Patrick Hsieh

Hello list,

Now that apache has FollowSymLinks and SymLinksIfOwnerMatch options,
there's still some security issue. For example, someone cp /etc/passwd

/home/foo/passwd to /var/www/hidden_dir/passwd. Since the owner maches,
it will still lead to exposure of passwd file. Is there any way to avoid
this? I'd like to restrict the symbolic link from linking across the

Is apache any configuration to avoid symbolic link across documentroot?
I hope to keep the consistency of the content of DocumentRoot because of
NFS. Symbolic link outside the document could possibly lead to
inconsistency.

OK. What I mean is, since I have to turn on FollowSymLinks. I wish
apache only follow the symblic links under /var/www

GOOD

BAD

cd /var/www/

usb mass storage problem

2001-11-22 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello list,

I have a usb external storage device within IBM 2.5" 6GB IDE.
I'd like my linux 2.4.13 to recognize it. So I compile kernel with USB
support as well as:

1. Preliminary USB device filesystem
2. UHCI support
3. USB Mass Storage support
4. USB Human Interface Device support

I've read the usb guide from
http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/book1.html

then I mount -t usbdevfs none /proc/bus/usb

debian:/proc/bus/usb# mroe devices
bash: mroe: command not found
debian:/proc/bus/usb# more devices
T: Bus=01 Lev=00 Prnt=00 Port=00 Cnt=00 Dev#= 1 Spd=12 MxCh= 2

E: Ad=02(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl= 0ms

Seems kernel recognizes the usb-storage device. Then I check /proc/scsi

debian:/proc/scsi# ls
ide-scsi scsi usb-storage-0

debian:/proc/scsi# cat usb-storage-0/1
   Host scsi1: usb-storage
   Vendor: Unknown
  Product: USB TO IDE
Serial Number: None
 Protocol: Transparent SCSI
Transport: Bulk
 GUID: 05e30700
 Attached: Yes

Well, all seems fine! But how can I fdisk the usb storage device and
repartition it?

It doesn't mapping to /dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdc

Idea?

Thanks.

Re: php4 parameter problems

2001-12-12 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello,
I use the php4 debian package from woody.
But in this case, I can't print the value of $test_par, which should be
"aaa"

If I get php4 source tarball and compile myself, the function is working.
I wonder why the php4 shipped from woody can't work.

BTW, I have register_globals = On in php.ini, and
$HTTP_GET_VARS["test_par"] is also a blank. :-(

My headache is that some of my codes were ok in this case when they are
in php4.0.x on FreeBSD, when I migrated to php 4.1 on Debian, they do
not work. And I really do not want to compile php4 myself. So I wonder
if debian php4 maintainer has some special concerns, such as security
issue, so he disable this function.

Idea?

php4-cgi and php4-cgi-mysql in Woody

2001-12-12 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello,

I installed php4-cgi(Version: 3:4.0.100-1) in my woody then I'd like it
to support mysql, so I apt-get install php4-cgi-mysql, but it
complains:

Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
php4-cgi-mysql: Depends: php4-cgi (= 4.0.3pl1-0potato1.1) but it is not going
to be installed
E: Sorry, broken packages

My question is, since php4-cgi-mysql is in woody release, why does it
require php4-cgi 4.0.3pl1-0potato1.1 ??

Re: php4 parameter problems

2001-12-13 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello,

in this case, I can get $test_par.
My problem is, if I just use
"test.php?test_par=aaa" to get the parameter value or
"test.php?111+222+333" to get argument values, they are ok if they do
not both appear in the url. But if they both exist in the url, say,

test.php?111+222+&test_parm=value&

I can get arguments from that yet failed to get parameter values.
If I compile php4 myself, they are both ok, even they both exist in the
url; but in php4 shipped in Debian, the function is disabled, which
leads to an big incompatibility of my previous php4(4.0.x) in FreeBSD,
so I am really in the nuts.

I believe there is something disabled or enabled in the php4
configuration of Debian package, but I just can't find out where it is.
Anyone can figure it out?

php4-cgi-mysql fail dependency?

2001-12-17 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello,
I am running woody with php4, php4-mysql and php4-cgi.

When I run php4-cgi standalone script in the shell, I found it does not
support mysql. So I tried to install php4-cgi-mysql, then it returns a
dependency problem:

debian:/tmp# apt-get install php4-cgi-mysql
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
php4-cgi-mysql: Depends: (= 4.0.3pl1-0potato1.1) but it is not going to be
installed
E: Sorry, broken packages
debian:/tmp#

Well, the php4-cgi in woody is version 3:4.0.100-1, but why does
php4-cgi-mysql in woody depend (= 4.0.3pl1-0potato1.1) , which should be
potato version? Is it broken dependency?

I read /usr/share/doc/README.*

modified /etc/postfix/main.cf as
smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_mynetworks, hash:/etc/postfix/lamers,
check_client_access hash:/etc/postfix/pop-before-smtp,
reject_unknown_client,
check_client_access regexp:/etc/postfix/clientcheck,
check_client_access regexp:/etc/postfix/openrelay, reject_maps_rbl,
check_relay_domains

Then edit /etc/pop-before-smtp/pop-before-smtp.conf
to

# Simple "empty" pattern to speed up a bit when only one pattern is needed
# (might spit out errors if you in fact have such lines in your logfile)
pat2 = '^X$'

# For Courier-IMAP:
pat = '^(... .. ..:..:..) \S+ imaplogin: LOGIN, user=\S+,
ip=\[(\d+\.\d+\.\d+\.\d+)\]$'

after /etc/init.d/pop-before-smtp restart and
/etc/init.d/postfix reload

I tried to check my pop mail first, but the I failed to relay my mail
with this postfix smtp server. Neither did it work after courier-imap
mail retrieval. Is there anything I could have missed?

Thanks.

question about package source configuration

2001-11-13 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello,
After I apt-get source mysql-gpl-client
then cd mysql-gpl-*/
I can dpkg-buildpackage -b -uc to build the binary.
But how can I modify the ./configure parameters?

I checked Makefile.in and found $(EXTRA_CONF_ARGS).
Looks like I can put my args in that variable. But
where is that varible defined?

Thanks.

Thanks.

Hello list,

I have to Debian woody with ssh-3.0.1p1-1.2.

In Debian A, I ssh-keygen the public key, scp and append to Debian B

Then I try to ssh login from Debian A to Debian B again, but still got

Is there something wrong?

Thanks. I end up with ssh-keygen -t rsa and then appended id_rsa.pub to
.ssh/authorized_keys2 on the other machine. It works!

apt-get error with mysql-server upgrade

2002-01-24 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello list,

Runing apt-get upgrade, I have some packages upgraded and an error
occurred when dpkg installes mysql-server and tries to chown mysql on
/var/lib/mysql. I mount /var/lib/mysql on an ext3 partition and it has
an ".journal" file under it, which is chowned root.root

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/lib/mysql$ ls -l .journal
-rw---1 root root 33554432 Dec 7 14:33 .journal

I found there's no way for root to chmod/chown the .journal file,
therefore dpkg returns an error to apt-get.

Is there any solution?

Re: Where I Can Find OpenSSH+OpenLDAP Documents?

2002-03-21 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello Russell Coker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,

I installed libnss-ldap in woody, copied
/usr/share/doc/libnss-ldap/examples/nsswitch.ldap
to /etc/nsswitch.conf.

in /etc/libnss-ldap.conf, the remote ldap server information is defined,
and /etc/nsswitch.conf defines that:

# the following two lines obviate the "+" entry in /etc/passwd and /etc/group.
passwd: files ldap
group: files ldap

So it will authenticate the files then, if fails, ldap server, right?

OK. So I added a user "james" on the remote ldap server with some
attributes like uid, uidnumber, loginshell and userpassword, etc. But I
didn't add "james" in my local OS. However, when I ssh my local machine
with account "james", it just doesn't work.

Is there anything I could have missed?

limits.conf problem

2002-04-04 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello list,
This is my limits.conf for testing Debian GNU/Linux server:

*   hardcore0
*   hardnofile  1024
*   hardrss 1
*   hardnproc   100
*   hardstack   102400
roothardcore0
roothardnofile 65536
#roothardrss40
roothardnproc 65536

Please notice that I set 102400 KB of stack size for individual user.
However, when I ssh login and ulimit -a, I get

core file size(blocks, -c) 0
data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited
file size (blocks, -f) unlimited
max locked memory (kbytes, -l) unlimited
max memory size (kbytes, -m) 1
open files(-n) 1024
pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 8
stack size(kbytes, -s) 8192
cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited
max user processes(-u) 100
virtual memory(kbytes, -v) unlimited

The stack size become 8192 only. Is there any configuration that make
the limit above limits.conf?

Re: limits.conf problem

2002-04-04 Thread Patrick Hsieh
Hello Patrick Hsieh <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,

Have to use ulimit -aH to read the hard limit. ^_^

My problems:

1. What's the difference btween soft and hard limit?
What will happen if I exceed the soft limit but in the hard limit?

2. How to tune the stack size, max locked memory and max memory size?
My Debian GNU/Linux server has 1G RAM as a productive web server.

make customized woody bootable CD within 180MB

Hello list,

I am working on debian-cd utility to make my own customized woody
