HD Partition
hi all i have an 8.4GB hard drive and i would like some suggestion as to how to divide it. how much space should i devote to each directory and which ones should be real partitions and which should be logical? /usr = /home = /etc = /tmp = /root = /var = am i missing other important directories? the machine would have a maximum of three different users. i also have 64MB of RAM do i still need to make a swap partition? please cc my email address since i'm not in the user list. Valid Baud Rate Values
hi i tried downloading hamm files to upgrade from bo. i noticed that the ftp connection was very slow and found out that i was connected at 9600. i changed the speed to 115200 in the ppp.options file. is 11520 the fastest transfer rate that ppp can support or are there greater values? i have a 28.8 modem, what would be the optimal value it? exactly what does this values signify? thanks a lot patrick -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] < /dev/null

Slink Upgrage Via Telnet
hi i was reading through the Slink release notes, and saw that it was NOT recommended to upgrade over a remote telnet connection. unfortunately this is the only way i could get online. is there a work around problem? does it take a whole lot of time to upgrade online, i mean just downloading the packages? i already have bo and hamm in CDs and it's getting kind of ridiculous to get a CD just to upgrade.
Linux to VAX
hi there i'm not quite sure if this is the right place to ask, but i'll ask anyways. i would like to port some Linux/UNIX binary files to a VAX machine. i've read that the integers and floats are very different on these machines. does anybody how make these conversion and/or know where i can get more info. are there libraries that does this conversion that is packaged with the Debian dist? i'm just really at a loss as to where to begin. Kernel Panic !!!!!
Hi My Linux box had problems shutting down when I Ctrl-Alt-Del, so I can boot up in Windows, and now Linux would not boot up. When I boot up, after the message - Running /etc/init.d/boot - I get the error message hda: read_intr: status=0x59 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error} hda: read-intr: error 0x49 {UncorrectableError}, LBAsect=1897876, sector 180244 end_request: I/O dev 03:02 sector 180244 Kernel panic: EXT2-fs panic (device 03:02): ext2_read_inode: unable to read i-node block - inode=21868, block=91022 Before all of this I was in root setting up my ppp connection to my school. I don't think that writing my chat scripts could cause this problems. I tried booting from a boot floopy hoping that I could use fsck, but I still got error message above when I got to Running /etc/init.d/boot. Is this as serious as it looks? Do I have to reformat hda (root dir) all over again and re-install the kernel? I'd really appreciate all the help with this. Fixing Bad Blocks
Hi. I recently posted a message about "Kernel Panic" that was due to bad blocks in my hard drive. My plan is to just start all over. What I need now is a way to fix bad blocks or to skip over them if neccessary. I received a message that told me to use e2fsck -c /dev/hda? ( where ? is any one of my 5 partions) to find the bad the bad block and then to use badblocks to mark them. However when I did e2fsck -c /dev/hda? again it still sees the bad blocks and I am afraid that this will still cause the system to hang. I am thinking of reformatting and drive all over again. Will this fix the problem? Does any body have any suggestions. Is there any program that fixes badblocks? dselect infinite loop?
Hi A weird thing happens to deselect when I run it. It keeps replacing existing files in my system even though I did not select it. And it keeps on doing this over and over again. This is the first time this has happened. Normally is simply skips over files that were already selected, but not anymore I have to Ctrl-C to stop deselect. Repartition Format
Hi I've just finished repartition my hard drive using FIPS and have confirmed that the partition was done, but the new partition doesn't seem to be formatted. My new disk space for Linux is around 700MB could provide a nice way of dividing this for Linux, (i.e how much do I reserve for root, swap disk (i have 16MB RAM), usr, etc). Sound card & PPP configuration
Hi I'm trying to cojfigure my computer's sound card and internet connection via PPP. As far as I can figure I have to recompile the whole kernel to get the proper devices working. PPP ?

hi all i'm switching window managers from enlightenment to scwm (it's about time i learn lisp). i'm using gdm as my display manager, which - correct me if i'm wrong - simply runs gdmchooser, gdmlogin, and gnome-session or Xsession depending on which session i choose. (gnome-session is called by the script /etc/gdm/Sessions/Gnome) what i would like to know: 1) how do i make scwm my default window manager? in /etc/gnome/default.wm if have made WM=scwm, but everytime i login in X i keep getting x-window-manager which is fvwm. 2) can i continue to use /etc/gdm/Sessions/Gnome or do i have to switch to Xsession? 3) anybody know how well gnome works with scwm? -- "As a general rule, if you have trouble with the binary system, then probably it is because you do not really understand the decimal system ..." i've finally learned my lesson the hard way. i've ditched scwm and decided to give icewm another try - i'm begining to like it. i was just under the impression that i can still use gnome apps with a non-gnome compliant window manager minus some functionality. but then again why sacrifice functionality when this is what gnome is giving. now i know better. Is possible to have the window title dynamically change to the current working directory. Kinda like the way emacs changes the window title to the name of the current file. 2) (C/C++) I need to put ints, floats, and doubles in to char* arrays (weird huh). Essentially what I would like the is to have the byte information stored in a float (4bytes) and a char[4] (total 4bytes) to be identical. What's the proper way to do this? 3) In zsh the is a command 'vared' that allow environment variables to be edited on th fly. Is there a comparable command on bash?

Network Security / SRP
hi all i'm trying to make my system as secure as possible, in light of recent news of networks getting broken. the first thing i did was to turn off services spawned by the inet daemon that i don't use. currently the following are the only ones running - i didn't turn them off since i don't know exactly what they do: discard daytime time saft?? What is this used for? is this like ftp? cvspserver ?? is this safe to turn off? i dont quite know what discard, daytime, and time do is it safe to turn these guys off? i run nntp - does nntp rely on daytime and time? in general is it better to use tcpserver than the inet daemon. i run qmail which uses tcpserver and i'm planning to have sshd be spawned by tcpserver. i've read the tcpserver is better than inet - does anyone have any opinion on this? are there any draw backs to removing the inet daemon completely? if i can turn off the services i've listed above i would not have any use for inet. has anyone have any experience with SRP - Secure Remote Password. is this similar to ssh. i've also looked at FreeS/WAN and it looks like a very good solution to network security. is anyone using this now and how is it working for you? while reading about FreeS/WAN i also came across DNSSEC - DNS Security - featured in Bind-8.2.2p5, which i am using. exactly what is this feature and how do i take advantage of it? thanks pd

I would only do one upgrad potato/kernel at a time. > If is give the commands > root> apt-get update > root> apt-get dist-upgrade > with the sources.list pointing to unstable. will this automatically get the Point it at the release name of potato and not unstable. When potato finally goes stable you don't want a suprise the next time you update apt-get and you have upgraded to the next unstable(woody) release. > 2.2.? kernel and go through the configuration process. or do i have to get > the latest kernel first configure it and then run the apt-get commands. > No, the kernel will not automatically upgrade. This topic has been hashed out before on this list, check the archives. You will need to grab the kernel source package and build you own kernel. How to use 2 IPs and 1 machine
hi all i have 2 static IP address (actually i have 3 IP address one is assigned to a Win95 machine). i don't know the best way to utilize the resources i have. i was kinda wanting to make one IP to be used by my http server and the other to be used by my named and my mail server, but i don't know if this legal. since it seems to me that i would have to assign two IP address to the same machine.? any suggestion on how i could use the 2 IPs i have. thanks pd

removing directories in /usr/share/doc/
is it completely safe to simply 'rm -rf' certain directories in /usr/share/doc? i've noticed that /usr/share/doc takes up the largest disk space in my /usr partition and i hardly ever read any doc in it, since i can almost always find the doc somewhere in the net. and some packages even have the same doc in different languages taking up even more space. it would be nice if apt-get has an option to not install files destined for /usr/share/doc/. __ Do You Yahoo!? initrd and kernel 2.4.17
hi all i'm in the process of upgrading my woody box to kernel 2.4.17. does 2.4.17 require initrd to boot-up? if so aside from adding kernel support for ramdisk and initrd what else should be done to create a new kernel and how memory should i allocate, by default it is 4096? is it really beneficial to boot through ramdisk and could someone explain why? i've read initrd.txt in the kernel-source directory and to me the benefit does not seem that great. __ Do You Yahoo!?
