Booting from a floppy to install debian

2003-07-15 Thread Marvin Aguero

Guys,

I have decided to give debian GNU/Linux a chance.
So, I downloaded the "woody" Official i386 Binary-1 image from the web and
burned the CD. So far so good, the problem is that machine I am trying to
install it at is quite old and doesn't boot from a CD.

How can I create a boot floppy to install
debian from there? Can you guys give me a hand on this?

TIA,

-Marvin

No GUI

2003-07-19 Thread Marvin Aguero

Hi guys,

I have a little problem with debian (little
problem for those of you who know about this stuff).

I just installed it on my machine, but it starts
automatically with the GUI. I'd like it to start with the command line and start
the GUI myself once I log on.

Any pointers on how to change this?

TIA,

-Marvin

mouse pointer does not show

2003-07-19 Thread Marvin Aguero

Guys,

I've installed debian "woody" on my computer but I
am experiencing a weird problem.

The mouse pointer does not show on the screen. I
can say that it's been working, in the sense what if I move the mouse randomly,
I can see the different buttons changing colors. But I cannot see where the
mouse pointer is.

This is sad. :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've playing
around with the configuration to no avail. :-(

TIA,

-Marvin

Re: mouse pointer does not show

OK Guys,

My mouse is finally working thanks to Hurbert Chan who gave me trick that
made the difference.

All I had to do was to include the SWCursor option in the XFConfig86-4 in
the section for the video card.

My thanks are extensive to all of you who replied to my message.

-Marvin

PS.
More questions will come as I continue on my quest to install Debian
GNU/Linux. :-)

BTW, what does Debian mean? I looked for it in the dictinary and couldn't
find it.

Networking 3 simple questions

2004-06-06 Thread Marvin Aguero
Guys,

I guess these three questions are simple for those who are familiar with
Debian. I would really appreciate some help on these matters.

1) How can I know which IP Address I have been assigned if debian is
configured as DHCP? Something like ipconfig on the Windows world.

2) If I configured my machine as DHCP while installing it, how can I change
it to use an specific IP Address?

3) The opposite, if I have the machine configured with an specific IP
Address, how can I change it to use DHCP?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

-Marvin

Copying a CD

2004-09-13 Thread Marvin Aguero

Hi guys,

I have little experience burning CDs with Linux, but I have
managed to burn some data and audio CDs with no problems at all.

I now face a new challenge: I’d like to duplicate a
CD. The CD I am trying to duplicate is bootable, so, I’d like to make an
exact copy of it, not just copy the files.

Can anyone share some ideas as how to achieve this?

TIA,

-Marvin
