Debian wheezy testing - auto printer install

2012-11-19 Thread Johan Scheepers

Good day,

Installed latest wheezy weekly. I understand it is testing.

The printer auto install / manual install does not work.

Installed splix - no change.

Anything else that should be done?

Would like to test OS if printer does work.

Thanks

Good day,
Here is a script that I use to migrate from debian to any other OS.
But modify it to suit your circumstances.
Been doing it for years.
By just changing you can do the reverse.
From thunderbird to thunderbird is the same just change the hidden file
names for the systems.
After the transfer when you first time start thunderbird it will check
your additions etc.

rsync -av /media/johan/trans-3/sam-all/home-all/.icedove/
/home/johan/.thunderbird/

I play around with about five different OS'ses and do this from my
"master" OS.

Like firefox, gnucash, all other files I would like to transfer.
Do this with scripts.
Enjoy

Re: How to install Debian 7 to external hard disk

2013-08-26 Thread Johan Scheepers

On 26/08/2013 13:46, Bonno Bloksma wrote:

Hi,

Is there a preferred way to install Debian 7
from DVD to an external (USB) hard disk ?

Euh... just install it on that disk? ;-)

The whole external hard disk is to be used instead of the internal hard disk.

Ok, no problem.

This is to experiment with the new release (and discover fish hooks like
graphics that don't work) while leaving the internal hard disk with the
production Debian 6 on it completely alone.

Sensible.

One then boots from either the external hard disk or the internal hard disk.

Yes and no, but read on.

To set this up, at what stage in the install process does one actually put the
new release on to the external disk ?

When it asks which disk to set it up to and whether you want to do the
partitioning yourself (manual) or guided.

Does one need to also tell the install program where to put grub ?
or does it do that automatically ?

You just stated above you have a production version of Debian on the internal
disk, so it has Grub already. The new installation on the external disk just
needs to be added to the existing Grub config. The installer should do that for
you.

Is there any other special configuration one needs to do to properly
put the new release on to the external hard disk ?

Not that I know of.

It is vastly preferable not to unplug the internal hard disk or otherwise
disrupt the functioning system.

No, the installer needs to access the Grub config on that disk. Unplugging it
would also change the name of the disks (sda, sdb, etc) and might interfere
with the installation or later on with running it, although it should not when
using the default disk labels.

Of course the internal hard disk will be backed up before the attempted install
...

Yes, please do so. ;-)

Bonno Bloksma

Good day,
I have been doing this for years. Run 5 different linux flavours on
different usb drives.

It works fine.
My windows drive is in the laptop.
IMPORTEND..

Pick the correct drive and partition to install.
Pick the correct drive and mbr to install boot loader.
Otherwise it will mes-up your windows mbr.
Unless this is where you want to install the boot loader.
Enjoy

debian 6 - latest release - internet connection

2011-03-20 Thread Johan Scheepers

Good day,

After installing debian 6 it was found that it prefers built in wireless
connection on my dsl.

The wire connection was inserted and available.

The wireless connection works ok at 55% but I would prefer wired connection.

Fedora, centos, mandriva prefers wired connection on installation.

Could there be a reason for debian's behaviour.

Some advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Could there be a reason for debian's behaviour.

When you say "inserted and available" do you mean just plugged in, or
actually working in Debian? Could it be that the wired ethernet card
was not recognized and/or no driver was loaded? Does the wired
interface work if you turn off the wireless manually?

Good day,
Was installing debian 6. Went through the fases answer the questions.
It whent on and installed about 1200 files without asking the wireless
password.

Now I think it must have used the wired connection.
When I rebooted (first reboot after install) it was found that the
wireless connection was used.

It will not auto configure eth0. I can not manually configure eth0.
I can not answer required questions.

Point of interest. Fedora 14 and Mandriva 2010.2 was able to configure
and use

 (1) Wired (2) Wireless and (3) Mobile broad on the same machine.
They are all installed on separate external USB drives on same machine..
Just switch cables to boot other distro.

When debian 5.06 was used it connected to the wired connection.
Did not upgrade (never upgrade) do fresh install always.

Something must have changed.
Thanks

You can also delay the kernel boot messages by appending
"boot_delay=miliseconds" at GRUB's kernel line.

Too tecnical for me

How about dmesg?

Have a lot of output.

Works in Wheezy.

Yup, it also works here (wheezy). But IIRC, bootlogd fails at a random
basis (works on some systems, it doesn't work on others).

I thought it was too until I did

wtopa@dj:~$ cat /etc/default/bootlogd

I am seeing the same on sid! ??

wtopa@dj:~$ cat /media/sid/etc/default/bootlogd.dpkg-old
# Run bootlogd at startup ?
BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=Yes

UPDATE

Fount the problem. Even though dpkg -l bootlogd said it was installed.
some how back in January the bootlogd executable had been removed.
Aptitude was able to purge/install the package and the log is now
working in wheezy

The Sid is somewhat different. I moved the weird bootlogd.dpkg-old to
bootlogd and restarted that service and it is now working. I think(?)
the problem(s) occurred during the upgrade to bootlogd version
2.88dsf-22, which broke initscripts and sysvinit-utils. Anyway a
reinstall on sid fixed it.

Wayne

Wheezy. I installed bootlogd and now there is information in /var/log/boot.

But nothing about the firmware failure/missing.

Thats is the info I am looking for.

More suggestions please.

According to the list.gz file for CD1, found at

neither of the two packages you tried to install are on CD1.

Do you have any other cds besides #1? If not, you'll probably

OK thanks.
Received DVD's. Try test install with them

debian 6 usb 3 ready ???

2011-09-12 Thread Johan Scheepers

Good day,

Tried to install Debian 6 on usb drive via USB 3 port.
Could not see the drive so tried on USB 2 port, went ok.

After installation it worked on USB 3 but when connected an other usb
drive in the 2nd usb3 port debian froze while the drive was loading.

Froze so bad that I had to disconnect the internal batt. The swith off
had no affect.

This now happened twice.

Should I rather run debian via usb2 ports.
My laptop have 2xusb2 and 2xusb3 ports.
Debian has a nice gnome desktop and it connects without hassels to my
huawei modem.

Hope that debian won't change to some rather difficult desktop
After some use I want to move debian to my internal drive. That is were
ubuntu now resides.

Running ubuntu 11.04 without any trouble but the way the gnome/unity is
going I am looking for the gnome desktop as it is at this moment.

Kindly some advice on my questions please.

If you still did not done it, I'd report it. USB 3 support has been in
mainline kernel for some time ago (IIRC, since 2.6.31 when it was first
added xHCI).

Mmm... Ubuntu 11.04 ships a newer kernel (2.6.38 vs. 2.6.32) so maybe you
could try to load a higher kernel in your Debian to check for any
improvement in USB 3 support :-?

Installing a higher kernel - slightly beyond me.

It's strange, because when you experience a codec issue the file cannot

something similar which makes my wonder if you have a global problem with
your sound system and not just with mp3 files :-?

Is it possible to install debian from dvd-1 only ??

Installed it on an external usb drive..all went well untill...

Near the beginning was told some non-free files required..(names
provided) install by stick or whatever.

Skipped this.

The end ..unable to install grub.
So tried lilo. Still no go. So finished install.
So no booting.

Can not remember that such has happened to me with any of the flavours

Would like to try it out if I can boot it.

I had that once, the culprite was that I had not made a separate boot partition
Thierry

Years ago when it was stiill "hard" to install linux versions it was
proper to make different partitions.

Now just one partition for whole installation with no problem.

Really hope it stays that way. No problem with partitions becoming to small.
But for testing I would try this. Will just wait for possible more info

On my latest install I tried the boot.img.gz on an USB-stick. It failed

wasting time, I dd'ed the netinstall iso onto the stick and installed.

As far as I know, the debian-6.0.2.1-i386-netinst.iso is the ONLY one
that can be used on both USB and CD-rom. Why not give
debian-6.0.2.1-i386-CD-1.iso the same functionality The
netinstall-image install requires much time on slow lines.

I HAVE tried dd'ing debian-6.0.2.1-i386-CD-1.iso to a stick. It will
not boot. Didn't expect it to do either. Had to try.

Then there's most likely a problem with your BIOS I'm afraid. For both
amd64 and i386, the first disc in *every* set is created using
iso-hybrid options to make it work both on CD/DVD as well as on USB:

  businesscard
  netinst
  CD#1
  DVD#1
  BD#1

As normal, I ran lots of tests when I created the images for 6.0.2.1,
but just to make sure 100% that things are OK I've just downloaded
debian-6.0.2.1-i386-CD-1.iso onto a USB stick. It booted just fine on
an i386 netbook here.

Have you tried unetbootin to write iso to stick.
I used it a few times and it worked every time.
Install it with apt-get.

:-) Good.

I know I am running unstable test but will update regularly.
This mail is from Test.

I think that a large percentage of the users on this list use Squeeze on their
desktops. It has already ben frozen, so will become progressively more
stable until it becomes Stable and Lenny is downgraded to Old Stable. So you
should be fine. I am sure that that was the best thing to do in the
circumstances.

By the way, Squeeze is Testing, which is not unstable. Tho' it probably
appears unstable to many people here, it is not classified as unstable, but
as testing. Sid is Unstable and is indeed unstable! This nomenclature is
not of itself important, but I may not be the only one who has found that
your posts are sometimes a bit confusing because I am not sure to which out
of Squeeze and Sid you are referring. I am woefully ignorant about Fedora so
cannot just translate. ;-)

Lisi

Sorry if I sound a bit confusing. Being less than 10 days with debian first
time in my life I am confused about namings etc.

Used to opensuse and ubuntu.
Appreciate the help so far from list members

improve screen resolution

2010-11-02 Thread Johan Scheepers
Good day,

Is there a way that I can improve my laptop screen resolution.

Laptop  = Fujitsu/Siemens Esprimo Mobile.

This is from my suse OS.

This is what I get in opensuse 11.3
lspci | grep VGA
dimensions:1024x768 pixels (271x203 millimeters)

This is very nice.

800x600 is maybe OK in normal use.
I get sizing problems on my internet banking site with the smaller
resolution

I do not have the know how to implement your suggestions.
I only can use the OS's as is.
I do appreciate your assistance

I cannot guarantee your card can get your desired resolution under
Debian, there seem to be some problems with xorg-sis drivers, but we at
least can try some tweaks :-)

Are you using lenny, squeeze, sid...?

Anyway, you can create a "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" file (if there is one
already present just make a backup first -by renaming the file to
something like "xorg.conf.old"-, never work on the original file without
having done a copy first so in the event something goes wrong you can
easily restore the original file).

And there you can put:

***
Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "Monitor0"
   DisplaySize 271 203
End Section
***

(that is the size openSUSE 11.3 detected)

Save the "xorg.conf" file and restart the system (the fastest way in this
case to test the new configuration). And cross your fingers :-P

Greetings,

OK, before I do anything.

I am using squeeze (freeze) and update it daily.

Does this make any difference to your suggestion?

You need to have xserver-xorg-video-sis installed --- I´d remove the
other xserver-xorg-video-* packages.

The "sis" has already been tried, though, as you can see in the
logfile:

(II) LoadModule: "sis"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/sis_drv.so
(II) Module sis: vendor="X.Org Foundation"

Later it´s unloaded. It looks as if the xserver gets confused because
it loads arbitrary modules and cannot figure out the capabilities of
the screen:

(II) VESA(0):: Using default hsync range of
31.50-37.90 kHz
(II) VESA(0):: Using default vrefresh range of
50.00-70.00 Hz

(**) VESA(0): *Built-in mode "640x480"
(==) VESA(0): DPI set to (96, 96)

So what happens when you purge all xserver-xorg-video-* packages
except for xserver-xorg-video-sis?

Sorry all the above is beyond my capabilities.
I do not follow your instructions/suggestions

Maybe some more pointers?
Thanks

That it is. Thanks :-)

Ops, it seems your xorg server is using the VESA driver, that looks no
good to me (VESA driver is the most basic video driver available). OTOH,
that matches with the bug report :-(

If you still feel vigorous enough to play again with your "/etc/X11/
xorg.conf" file I can give you another hint: force the load of SiS driver.

Again, you'll have to create the file "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" and put in
there:

***
Section "Device"
  Driver "sis671"
EndSection
***

Done including the stars *** that correct
Your paste: http://pastebin.com/pLM39MWy
Bad happenend again. Tried startx in user and super mode. no dice
Await your report before the next one.
Johan

And restart.

If that does not work, you can also try with this:

***
Section "Device"
  Driver "sis"
EndSection
***

I dunno what would be the appropiate driver for Debian ("sis" or
"sis671"), so try first with one and then with the other O:-)

By doing this, we are trying to force Xorg server to load a more advanced/
suitable VGA driver for your card chipset in the hope the new driver can
allow you to choose another resolution (1024x768).

Don't forget to attach the new logs (pastebin) for each change you make
in your "xorg.conf" file, so we can verify if the new configuration has
been correctly applied.

Greetings,

I see the same report, it still fallbacks to VESA :-/

And VESA does not like the resolution you need:

(WW) VESA(0): Unable to estimate virtual size
(II) VESA(0): Not using built-in mode "1280x768" (hsync out of range)
(II) VESA(0): Not using built-in mode "1024x768" (hsync out of range)
(--) VESA(0): Virtual size is 800x600 (pitch 800)

O.k. Try to let Xorg to generate by itself a "xorg.conf" file.

If you are under gnome, go to a tty (ctrl+alt+f1) and then as root run:

/etc/init.d/gdm stop

Report no such file. There is no file.

Then cd into /etc/X11 directory:

cd /etc/X11/

Once here, run:

Xorg -configure

Reports Fatal error and a lot stuff

Question..: Once in tty, how to return to gnome grafical.

That will generate a "xorg.conf" file for you in "/etc/X11/xorg.conf".

Reboot. If neither works, do not worry, copy the content of the
"xorg.file" that it was auto-generated and paste here (it should not be
very long).

It seems to me that this explains why X won't kick into 1024x768 mode
(it thinks the monitor can't handle it).

1. Do you have a file /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

No. Not such file.

If so, please could you paste the "Monitor" sections that include any
reference to "HorizSync" or "VertRefresh". (Better still, pastebin the
entire file.) For example, mine has a section that looks like this:

 Section "Monitor"
 Identifier "DELL 2007FP"
 VendorName "Unknown"
 ModelName "DELL 2007FP"
 HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
 VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0
 EndSection

2. For your monitor, can you please identify the Horizontal Sync frequency
range that it can support (this will be in the booklet, or you can try
searching for it online).

Sorry no booklet. Was a demonstration model.
On the net..:
fujitso siemens esprimo mobile does not display the freq.

Uh? :-?

Well... you have to understand what we are trying to get with that. The
goal is to kill the X server (your X session) in order you can run "Xorg -
configure" command.

If killing gdm3 does not work, you can try by calling "init 1" ("init 1"
is single-user mode with no graphical server) and run the command from
there.

So jump to a tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1), login as root and run:

init 1

Re-type root's password to get into maintenance console and follow the
last steps:

cd /etc/X11/
Xorg -configure

Well the short of it..it ends in .. ABORT.

Any suggestions for maybe a new card that is supported by squeeze?

Or a card that is more compatible with linux distros?

Now say I do replace the card.
How will debian handle it and maybe the other distros that I have on
external disks without reinstalling.

Suse11.3, Ubuntu 10.10.
Thanks

If something goes wrong (or you feel in panic :-P), you can always return
back to your "safe place" by:

su - youruser
startx

Ouch! :-(

I can't figure out what is going wrong here. "Xorg -configure" it's a
very basic step that should work under any circumstances :-?

Sorry, I'm getting out of ideas.

Any suggestions for maybe a new card that is supported by squeeze?

But didn't you own a laptop? How could you change the VGA card?

I know there are some external VGA ATI devices but AFAIK they are bundled
with concrete laptop brands, not suitable for all laptops.

Your card should be compatible... problem here is that you are hitting a
bug in Debian's xorg driver package (the one I already told you).

Almost any common VGA card (ati, nvidia or intel) would be fine. For
instance, I've got a nvidia 7600GS (quite old, I know) running on Debian
lenny pretty fine and previously was running on openSUSE 10.3 :-)

Today, installing a new VGA card should be an automatic step in latest
distributions (as openSUSE 11.3 and Ubuntu 10.10) because Xorg has been
automated precisely to achieve this situation (VGA card replacement,
monitor change...). Only when facing problems (such your case, I guess)
manual tweaks are required.

Greetings,

Now that remains is a big thank you for a big effort from you to solve this.
It was a learning experience for me.
Thank you to other list members who suggested some tweaks.

Johan

I've had exactly similar problems... And mine were solved by building my
own Xorg configuration.

Part of this was by going around and doing VERY general google searches
about my laptop and linux/X. The other part of it was going and getting
another dist to generate an xorg.conf that worked (somewhat), copying
that onto a flash drive or to dropbox or something.

Here's what I think /your/ xorg.conf file is going to look like:

---8<--- xorg.conf

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "kbd"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "SiS Graphics Adapter"
Driver "sis"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "SiS Graphics Adapter"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x768" "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Default Layout"
Screen "Default Screen"
InputDevice "Generic Keyboard"
InputDevice "Configured Mouse"
InputDevice "Synaptics Touchpad"
EndSection

8<

Its worth a shot.

Thanks for your suggestion.
First - copied your file into xorg.conf. It complained and crashed.
second - cut away excess and only left what is to do with screen.
It did not complain but went in to console mode.
third - tried some more little tweaks. No difference.
Now again no xorg.conf file.
Kind regards
Johan

Hey, don't give up so easily! :-)

Let's return to the beginning... we have this bug report:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=546741

What we have here is a user using a computer like yours (or quite
similar, it's a "Fujitsu Esprimo Mobile v5535"), running Squeeze (like
you) and he can get a higher resolution with VESA driver (1280x800).

So back to work, copy/paste the "xorg.conf" detailed in this message¹,
restart the computer and check if you see any improvement.

Just remember to keep:

***
Driver "vesa"
***

Instead:

***
Driver "sis"
***

¹http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=546741#5

Greetings,

How much of that xorg should I copy?

The word 'sis' to be replaced by 'vesa in the whole file'?

Johan

It might also be worth checking if the Suse installation, which IIRC
works ok, has a good xorg.conf?

Suse handles it differently it seems to me. There is not one xorg file
some smaller ones

like screen, monitor, devices, etc.

Yes... okay, I'll put it all together in pastebin (just copy/paste):

Greetings,

UNBELIEVABLE...now need to improve my specs resolution.
Running at 1280x768 and have 1024x768 to spare.

Now I need to say THANK YOU in capital letters.

Did what you said and there it is.

My internet banking can see all and room to spare.

I even contacted siemens SA to lookinto another chipset. Still waiting.

May this help others users to improve their resolution. Easy ... a
driver available on the net by you and others.

Kind regards
Johan

This was a very good day for me.

networkmanager blocking evolution

2010-11-04 Thread Johan Scheepers

Good day,

Standalone laptop using debian squeeze freeze on a dsl modem connected
by cable.

All my internet applications work but evolution send/receive greyed out.

Today I configured evolution but no dice.
I use icedove but wanted to try evo.
On the evo list I found that evo needs some setting up in networkmanager.
Never done it before.

Some help would be appreciated

Thanks
Johan

Do you also have a wireless card? If so, does evolution work if you are
connected through the wireless with internet? If so, does the
networkmanager manage both cards? Or just the wireless?

If I start networkmanger the option for wireless pops up

What does that mean

This is another one of those annoying bugs related to network-manager.
Evolution online/offline with n-m only works if network-manager
controls *all* network devices. If there is an active network device
not controlled by n-m then it won't be known and will be marked as
offline to Evolution.

If you don't need network-manager, and if you are suffering from the
problem of n-m not managing your network devices then it would seem
that you would not need it, then you can restore Evolution's online
capability by removing the network-manager package. Then Evolution
won't think it is permanently offline.

A number of bugs have been filed on this topic and most of them merged
into this one:

   http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=549451

Bob

You were correct.
Just uninstalled networkmanager and all is fine.

Thank you to all that responded

Thanks

Best regards,

What I do is disconnect all drives except the one I want to use.

I have suse, ubuntu, debian on different usb external drives.

I just disconnect and connect to usb what I want to use and it works for
me more than 2 years

Enjoy
