as i recall, mr. sheer had the source online for critique and i
asked him what "rute" was in "R ute U sers T utorial and E

i'm guessing it's a homonym with a spelling different enough to

kernel packages leave a tar in /usr/src

you need to unzip and untar. it is helpful to then symlink this dir to
/usr/src/linux as thats where scripts seem to look for kernel source.

cd /usr/src
tar xjvf kernel-source-2.4.18.tar.bz2
cd kernel-source-2.4.18
make
make-kpkg --revision mymachine.1 --bzimage kernel_image
make-kpkg --revision mymachine.1 --bzimage modules_image

dpkg -i nvidia-glx_1.0.2880-3_i386.deb nvidia-glx-dev_1.0.2880-3_i386.deb

The above assumes you have the prereqs required to install all that

packages installed.

There may be more elegant solutions, but that's how I do it, to the

I migrated from Mandrake, another rpm based distro.

I completely trashed my Mandrake setup by trying to install debian Woody from
some cdr's burnt by some idiot that did not bother checking MD5 sums etc.

To stay on line I installed Debian 2.0r2 and had some fun at command line
while I was waiting for my 3.0r0 cds in the mail.

So finally I installed 3.0 - since then every Sunday night I apt-get update,
followed by apt-get upgrade just to keep my system up with the latest
security issues

It just works, no reboot needed, and thus far, just nothing goes wrong.

For support - this user list. I never paid for access to support for Mandrake
because I never bought a boxed set, always used the d/l versions. However my
son has paid for online support and he reckons it's worth nothing.

My experience with this list is that the responses are rapid, mostly very
cluefull, and pretty much what you need to live happily with Debian. And that
includes responses to questions about particular packages, not directly
Debian related.

Two things - get your cds from a good supplier, and read the docs about
installation first up. The first install is more demanding on Debian than the
commercial distros.

I'm not going to knock Mandrake, it did get me weaned off Microsoft, but I
would never go back to it from Debian now.

HTH

I use SpamCop all the time (30 times a day + ) as a header analyzing engine.
It does a great job of tracking the message source. Saves me hours every day
so I don't have to manually track down the message source and upstream ISP.
I then forward the actual spam to the ISP from which it came. Sometimes I
wonder if I am wasting my time by doing my "little" duty to make the Internet
better. Am I ??It seems to me, and I could be very wrong, that there
needs to be some major fundamental changes in the way smtp is handled.
Spam is getting worse every single freaking day with no end in sight at all !!

That is good stuff to know but I still believe spam needs to be reported to
the source network. If the ISP's don't know how they are being used by the
spammers then how can they help stop the SPAM? Of course there will always
be completely irresponsible and disgusting ISP's out there like Bellsouth.net
which seem to promote and harbor spammers. You can't do anything about them.

Your best options, as I see them:

1) Use jigdo to locate sites, download, and create images. Debian mirrors
don't contain pre-made images because Debian is so huge, but jigdo takes care
of this for you and is ported to several OS's.
http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/

2) Buy the CDs at a very low cost, if you don't have a fast internet
connection or don't want the trouble of downloading
http://www.debian.org/CD/vendors/

3) download a minimimal installation image then install the rest package by
package:
http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/

You will see more options at http://www.debian.org/CD

Debian offers some excellent documentation to help you get started. The faq
at http://www.debian.org/CD/faq/ and the installation guide at
http://www.debian.org are invaluable.

And don't be afraid to ask questions on this list.

Enjoy!

I don't think this is necessarily off topic. I too had the same problem,
but it went away when I changed my init string or upgraded the modem's

You can test init strings with hyperterm, minicom or other such programs.

The atix where x is a number should help you find out what type of modem
you have (ati0 and ati3 may be the most useful). You may want to look at
the error correction or compression options on your modem.

AT followed by:
&k0 Data compression disabled
&k2 Data compression enabled
&k3 MNP5 compression disabled
(I remember one of those was required for some 1200 baud users of my BBS)
&m0 Normal mode, error control disabled
&m4 normal/ARQ (error control)
&m5 ARQ mode (error control)

AT$ and at&$ ma help you find modem commands.

Useful init strings from the manual of my old sportster:
atz resets modem to NVRAM profile selected by Y command
atz1 resets modem to NVRAM profile 0
atz2 Resets modem to NVRAM profile 1
atz3 resets modem to factory default profile 0

Anyone else notice it took microsoft 3 days to fix the recent problem with
looping on windowsupdate for Win98 and others?

Has you download the new controls, and reboot(since when do you have to
reboot for windowsupdate?), and then after you rreboot, has you do the
same thing over and over.

Took at least 3 days for them to fix it. Even when debian lost satie, it
took under 3 days to get a replacement system in. Wasn't it about a day,
actually?

The other annoying thing is that windowsupdate is telling me that I need
to reapply security fixes that have already been done long ago :)

On the bright side, the squid proxy gave me the file at about 2-3 meg a
second. :)

Actually, the new windowsupdate is kinda nice in that it allows files to
be cached, whereas the old style WU would make sure you couldn't cache
anything.

new kernel - there is also the Athlon, and something else I'm too tired
to remember.
Be kind:)

I run Linux and Windows 2000 on both my laptop (Professional SP3) and
desktop (Advanced Server SP2). My laptop is working fine, but I have
completely screwed-up the desktop, which also runs 98. The only one I
can boot, on the desktop, is Linux.

The drive is a Quantum Fireball CR8 8.4GB UDMA 66 drive.

It was originally loaded with Win98SE. I was interested in Linux so
loaded that. I was not happy with the stability of 98SE, and it was
suggested I load W2K AS. This took some time, hence the confused layout
of the drive. As I can only access it on Linux, the partition table is
in Linux format, but it agrees with that from Partition Magic (PM).

I have appended the size, as the last column. Here 1 MB = 1,000,000B,
W2K uses 1,048,576.

I tried the W2k CD and it agreed with the above numbers, but has p5 as
C:, and reports p1 as "Inactive (OS/2 Boot)".

I upgraded my motherboard and processor to an Epox 8K5A2 (Via KT333) and
AMD Athlon XP 2000+.
For around a year W98 had crashed, somewhere around loading the video
driver. I was not much bothered as Boot Magic (BM) was working, and I
could boot W2K AS or Linux. The video adapter was also upgraded to a
NVidia GeForce2 MX400.

I was determined to get W98 to work. Thus began the series of errors
which have created the current disaster. With W2K AS runnign on a
logical drive, it need boot data (boot.ini) on the C: drive. I forgot this!

After multiple attempts to fix W98, I decided to format and reload. This
was problematic, but I continued and loaded verion 7 of PM and the
associated BM. It was around this point I discovered the blunder with
boot.ini. I had floppy rescue disks of PM and BM *Version 4*, and was
able to reload the original BM - so could boot Linux and W98.
Foolishly I used the same foppies for PM and BM 7 - so could no longer
boot anything but Linux.

The new M/B has USB2 and enhanced drivers for the IDE (UDMA 33/66/100),
I installed these in W2K AS early on in the piece, but cannot say exactly.

At some point, when W98 was still working - but not W2k AS, I installed
the Recovery Console for W2K.

By now you probably have a feel for the mess I have made! I'm very tired
and disheartened so I thought I'd ask for some help before I kill linux
as Well :).

I can still run my laptop, in both OS, over my 10Base2 LAN, using Linux
on the desktop.

Any suggestions for how to fix this mess would be gratefully received. I
don't much care if I lose W98. I have stuff on p5,6,7 I'd like to keep
but it's 10 and 4 which I would most like to keep.

TIA,
   Tim Wood

CDR support is typically prebuilt into the standard Debian kernel, if you
apt-getted your kernel you should be able to use "cdrecord" to burn ISO

It's based on the false assumption that if you can't see the problem,
it's not a problem. This argument is total bullshit, because your
septic tank will still burst and flood your lawn even if you ignore it
because you can't see that it's overfilled and about to burst.

Either way, it's funny watching the lemmings that believe such tripe
go marching off cliffs.

This is not a good use of the hosts file and could confuse things down
the line. A better solution to this would be to do any of the
following:

1) Use iptables to deny connections to 80/tcp on undesirable hosts.
2) Use squidgaurd
3) If you're trying to stomp ads, use adzap. http://adzapper.sourceforge.net/

Gordon Bennett! win98 and linux on 1.3G! Well, it does depend... I've
known a few people want win98 set up on a 500Mb HD, and it gets a bit
silly, cos you can only install about one app. So you can go online
with it, but that's about the limit.

$ du -s /windoze
1531336 /windoze (contains \Program Files and all the apps & data)
(plus a 375Mb boot partition which I don't mount in Linux, with
C:|WINDOWS and subdirectories)
$ du -s /usr
950904 /usr

Creating .debs out of development-branch kernels has been discussed in
the past. Don't do it. Or, if you're going to do it (hint: you can't
use make-kpkg at the moment) don't expect to upload it into the Debian
archive.

If you were indeed qualified to package 2.5 .debs you'd be able to debug
the problem facing you.

Anyway, why would you want to package 2.5.54, when the 2.5 branch is up
to revision 66 now?

Requiring an Exchange server to do calendar sharing with Outlook when
it wasn't necessary up to Outlook 2000 is the sort of blatant
bait-and-switch you would expect from the world's largest convicted
monopolist. I've heard that someone is working on an Exchange
replacement but couldn't say what it is, whether it is actually useable
or whether it will be free software.

I find it hard to believe it's just "one of the users". Who are they
sharing their calendar with? It basically boils down to whether the
organisation considers the convenience of these users to be worth the
expense of licensing a Windows OS plus Exchange, and paying the tax
again year after year.

If not, there are viable free alternatives such as Webcalendar
. It requires a web server and a
database, but you are building a server for them anyway so that's no
big deal. The biggest problem will be selling the idea to them and
retraining the affected users.

In my opinion asking questions on a public forum you aren't subscribed
to is just as rude as CC'ing to posters who are. This response will be
in the archives if you can be bothered putting in the effort.

I think this position is at least as arrogant as you consider Andrews'
behaviour as rude. It would be understandable if this was a web based
forum, but some people might see a slight hassle in subscribing to a
100+ messages per day maillist just for a short question now and then.
And it's really hard to hit "reply to all".

Just my 2 cent, sorry for being offtopic.

Yes, except you have in your XF86Config-4

Section "ServerFlags"
  Option "AllowMouseOpenFail"

I don't know a lot about Jabber but it allows chatrooms as well as
the peer-to-peer messaging. There is also a Jabber server that is open
source and from what I can tell written in C.

They have GPL clients for Win32, too:

Amazing, I'd told procmail to send all his linux-kernel garbage to
/dev/null, but who'd have thought I'd have to do the same for
debian-user?

Greetings,
I recently purchased an hp pavilion xt345 laptop, which has an ATI
Radeon Mobility M6 video card. Following some things that I'd read
online, I used the 'radeon' driver in my X configuration. My problem is
this: about 1/2 the time when I start X, something goes wrong and it
appears as if some sort of refresh rate is incorrect. It's clearly
trying to display the correct thing, but it shows things out of place
and 'shaking'. If I switch to a terminal and back into X a few times,
the problem goes away (until I switch back to a terminal again).
Sometimes X starts up fine. The same problems happen when I use
radeon-fb. Any ideas on what could be wrong?
I would think that it has to do with the refresh rates in my X config
file, but I don't understand why it would work fine half the time, in
that case.
Please CC me in any replies.
Thanks!

According to that, the SiS 5598 chips are only supported under
XFree 3.3.6.
