As for you problem, there was one helpful response earlier that I think
sum's it up:

CDR support is typically prebuilt into the standard Debian kernel, if you
apt-getted your kernel you should be able to use "cdrecord" to burn ISO
images (there are other tools to create em, I even heard about a gnome front
end).
