mount trouble with MSDOS fs
A while back, I reported that # mount -t msdos /dev/hda1 /mnt was not working. Someone said that running Norton Disk Doctor on /dev/hda1 (C:) from within Win95 resolved a similar problem. So I ran Norton Disk Doctor on /dev/hda1. It corrected a minor problem, but the mount command *still* does not work within Linux. Why? Is `Okidata 6e' page printer a `Windows-based' printer?
Following the Print-HOWTO, I did this from root: # cat /etc/printcap > /dev/lp1 My printer's LED blinked, with no further response after. /proc/devices shows that lp exists; `dmesg | grep lp' shows that my printer is recognized at port 0x378 (the IRQ should be 7, but I could not verify this from Linux). Update: immovable mouse cursor under XFree86 (Debian 1.3)
The bottom of my mouse says the mouse is an IntelliMouse 1.1A and PS/2 compatible. The port the mouse plugs into is a PS/2 port (ie, round). So within /etc/X11/XF86Config, I changed (under the "Pointer" section) the Protocol to be "PS/2", and then changed the Device to be "/dev/mouse" [On my box, /dev/mouse is a link to /dev/ttyS0.]. This did not work. IE, the pointer is still immovable. Also, I tried /dev/psaux, but my X server failed because it could not open this device. I believe both "PS/2" and "/dev/mouse" are correct. troubleshooting PnP modem on Linux 2.0.29 platform
I run Win95 and Linux 2.0.29 off separate hard drives running off an AMD K6 platform. Win95 uses a Plug-and-Play modem from Computer Peripherals, Inc. (a ViVa 56LC-SM). Linux, however, cannot dial out on this device; in fact, cu/kermit cannot even connect to the device. I have verified with setserial, /proc/interrupts, minicom, and my BIOS configuration that IRQs and other system parameters are reasonably set. The Serial-HOWTO indicates that PnP modems are *not* recommended, but that people are known to have got them working. If so, how? I have David Howell's pnp module/driver software, but I'm reluctant to install and use it. Does anyone have hard evidence that a ViVa 56LC-SM will work under Linux? Re: troubleshooting PnP modem on Linux 2.0.29 platform
The modem hangs off 0x2F8, with IRQ 3 the active interrupt request. 'setserial -a /dev/ttyS1' verifies this data. But if I say (from root): # cu -s 115200 -l /dev/ttyS1 I get a "Permission denied" error, even though 'ls -l' shows /dev/ttyS1 to be read/writable by user&group. If I go to kermit and say [this if from the Serial-HOWTO]: c-kermit> set line /dev/ttyS1 c-kermit> set carrier-watch off c-kermit> set speed 115200 c-kermit> c the kermit-shell hangs and I do not get an OK prompt. But, if I toggle to another Linux screen and say # cat /proc/interrupts interrupt 3 is shown with a 0-count. As soon as kermit is killed, then interrupt 3 disappears from /proc/interrupts. All of this, BTW, happens after I successfully dial out from Win95, and reboot to Linux from the rescue floppy, ie, without powering off the CPU. -c -- Original text > I run Win95 and Linux 2.0.29 off separate hard drives > running off an AMD K6 platform. Once the device is configured to a known location, either by your BIOS or by isapnptools, then it should work. What is the problem exactly when you try to use the modem? If the port doesn't seem to exist to Linux you might need to uncomment some parts of /etc/rc.boot/0setserial which from memory only enables the first two ports by default. I had a PnP modem working here while testing it, using isapnptools. Yes. I set up a K6 from Cybermax a while back. X11, emacs, et al seem to run fine. My biggest problem is figuring out how to get 'everything else' to work, like the PnP modem, PnP sound card, and PCL printer [BTW, I've concluded that unless you find a PCL printer with PostScript capability, you're stuck with either one that works really well under Win95 (PCL) or one that works really well under Linux (PostScript).]. Re: cu connects to PnP modem ok, but no response for AT
In the BIOS, I turn the 'PnP OS' option off. In the 'PCI peripherals' section of the BIOS, I disable the two 'Onboard serial devices' (as these two 9-pin ports are currently unused). When I look into Win95, I look at the settings for my modem and find that IRQ 4 is used for address 0x3f8, with DMAs 7, 5 active. Then, I go to Linux, set up the same for /dev/ttyS1 through 'setserial' and the 'isapnp' tools. When I use 'cu' to connect to the modem, I go to another xterm and type 'cat /proc/interrupts' to see what's going on with IRQ 4. Well, IRQ 4 fires off exactly 0 times, according to /proc/interrupts. Moreover, the modem never responds to ATE1 or anything else. I'm really at my wit's end on this one. But other people with PnP modems are reporting working setups. Sigh. What's the solution? -c Original Message Follows From: Hamish Moffatt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "linux.debian.user" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: cu connects to PnP modem ok, but no response for AT Date: 27 Nov 97 12:34:32 GMT On Wed, Nov 26, 1997 at 02:31:48PM +0500, Igor Grobman wrote: > > # cu --speed 115200 --line /dev/ttyS1 > > Connected > > [here I type "at&f", which is not echoed] > > cu: write: I/O error > > Disconnected > > # > > Looks like your modem is not really detected by linux. PnP modem woes continue, IRQ never fires for modem
Here's what I've done: 0. I installed isapnptools and set up the /etc/isapnp.conf file, which is provided below. I based the configuration on the readout for my modem within Win95. 1. I went through various setserial commands as in the /usr/doc/isapnptools/README.modules file. 3. I tried using both minicom and cu to connect to the modem. Neither echoes commands, even if I say ATE1. Nor does /proc/interrupts indicate that the relevant IRQ is even firing at all. 4. I've looked in the BIOS, turned off PnP OS, turned off unused onboard serial devices. Also, in the PnP/PCI submenu in the BIOS, I also toggled to 'Legacy device' for the relevant IRQ and 2 of the DMAs I thought were getting used. [BTW, what is a 'Legacy device', and why would you need it for a PnP modem?] 5. FYI, the modem is a ViVa 56K speaker/phone with a Lucent 1643 chipset. It works fine for Win95. QUESTIONS: a. For the /etc/isapnp.conf file below, how do you know what ID to use for the DMA? ie, I can see from Win95 that I need channels 7 and 6, but should I use (DMA 0 (Channel 7)) and (DMA 1 (Channel 6)) or should I use (DMA 0 (Channel 7)) and (DMA 0 (Channel 6)) or something else? Or does the DMA 0/1 ID not matter? b. I opened up the tower and noticed some cabling between the sound card and the modem card. That seems normal, but could this be involved at all? c. I noticed under the Device>Resources tab for my modem in Win95 that two distinct ranges are given: 0x3f8 and 0x100. I always use 0x3f8 (or 0x2f8). What is the purpose of the second range starting at 0x100? cyrus-sasl source install for postfix... did it work?
Hey everybody, I just did a source install of the cyrus-sasl source package, I followed the instructions on the Debian manual pages (http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-faq/ch-pkg_basics.en.html#s- sourcepkgs), I didn't get any errors or anything but when I reload postfix is doesn't list any auth options when I do a ehlo over telnet. Do I need to recompile postfix? How can I do this? When I run saslauthd the command is not found... how can I make sure that the sasl package is working and working with postfix? Any suggestions are much appreciated! Thank you all in advance! Charles Read -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
saslauthd? I can't seem to get it installed for postfix..
Hey everybody! I am trying to run a postfix with sasl support on my Debian box. I have tried apt-getting all sasl packages and saslauthd is nowhere to be found on my system... how has everybody else done it? Also, I know postfix has to be compiled with sasl support for it to work... how can I do this with apt-get? Is it automatically done when I apt-get the postfix package or how does that work? Anything is appreciated!!! Thanks!!! Charles Read -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: saslauthd? I can't seem to get it installed for postfix..
OK, so I got the postfix-tls package, didn't know about that thanks! But still cant find saslauthd... don't I need to start it? Now an ehlo over telnet shows AUTH and STARTTLS like expected and I created /usr/local/lib/sasl/smtpd.conf with the line 'pwcheck_method: pam' (although shouldn't it be pwcheck_method:saslauthd ?) but when I try to login via an MUA it rejects my system user passwords can you please help me with what this means? boot disk for sarge?
Hey everybody, Just installed sarge, GRUB is all messed up so I'm trying to make a boot floppy to be able to boot for now. But I can't find any choices for Make a Boot Floppy in the menu system on the netinstall disc like there is on the woody disc. Can you please tell me how to do this with the kernel that was recently installed? Thanks bunches!!! CR -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? dual boot? what do i need to do?
Hey everybody! Im trying to install Gentoo on my functional Debian system, I have 2 HD's, /dev/hdab and hdb. I have / on hda1 (set bootable), swap on hda2, and /home on hdb1 /usr on hdb2 and am trying to put Gentoo on hdb3. I have my menu.lst file in /boot/grub, but that is on the Debian / partition, I am assuming that I will need to edit menu.lst in order to be able to boot into Gentoo once installed on hdb3, but how will it being on hda1 affect the install? That is if I make hdb3 the root partition for my Gentoo system (and set up a seperate swap space of course) and install Gentoo's kernel and initrd image on hdb3 how will the menu.lst (acting as grub.conf?) be able to see the image(s) on hdb3? Or will that be determined by my setup of menu.lst (as in root=hd1,0) for the Gentoo entry? I wouldn't need to make hdb3 bootable would I? Anything is appreciated!! Thanks millions!! "Upgrading" to sarge when it goes stable?
Hey everybody! I currently run sarge (debian testing that is) on a few important servers, how should I handle sarge going from testing to stable? Is it like at an instant all the testing repositories will be labeled stable and from that moment forward everybody with woody has sarge, and likewise everybody with sarge then having sid? Any help?
