Kbear -- Is it broken?

2004-01-11 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

Using Xandros 2.0.

I downloaded Kbear today and I was very impressed with its design and
features. A really outstanding product. That is, until I tried to use it
to connect to my web site. It connected to my site and even showed the
public_html directory but would NOT show the remote public_html
directory listing, claiming I did not have the necessary permissions.
So, I tried gFTP and Igloo FTP. No problem whatsoever, Both connected
fine and allowed me to upload and download files flawlessly.

I then decided to connect to one of the KDE sites listed on their
Sitemanager. Again it failed, saying that there might be a bug in Kbear.

I downloded Kbear from:

deb ftp://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ sarge main

Anyone had the same problem? Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Benjamin

Dear friends:

[Using Xandros 2.0 built on Debian]

I installed Xandros 2.0 once again a few days ago. I had to reinstall it

Real, WMP and QT in Linux on MPlayer -- How to Install

2004-01-19 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

If you want to play RealPlayer, Windows Media Player and QuickTime on
Linux (and the latest versions, to boot), I strongly recommend MPlayer.
Using the Mplayer plugin, you will be able to play Real, WMP and QT (and
the latest versions, to boot) in Mozilla, Netscape, Konqueror and Opera.

Since Linux already has great DVD players (Xine, Ogle and Vlc), the main
reason for adding Mplayer is not so much for playing DVD's (though it
does it as well as the other players). It's for the browser plugins.
And, believe me, it's well worth the effort. And that is why I have
taken the trouble to write these instructions for those who could not
install Mplayer using the other instructions on our forums.

Mplayer is not easy to install, as I and others have found out. I would
like to share my success story with you. My motivation for pursuing this
is that I need to use RealPlayer online, and the RealPlayer plugin that
comes with Mozilla (mozplugin) is not very good. So, I plugged on (pun
intended) and at last, after several false starts (including trying out
some of the instructions on our forum), I have done it right. Before I
proceed, you might wonder: Why is Mplayer so difficult to install? Well,
in my research online, I came across the following article on this whole
issue. Bottom line: the authors of Mplayer apparently have an attitude.
Here is the URL (middle of page):

Mplayer: The Project from Hell
http://www.linuxworld.com/story/32880.htm

OK, now on to the instructions. Here goes:

I. Installing MPlayer.

We'll install the graphical version of Mplayer.

1. In Xandros Networks, download and install the gcc 3.33 file. You will
need the gcc 3.33 compiler to recompile the mplayer file from source.

2. Go to the MPlayer home page and download the following three files:

The MPlayer 1.0pre3. tar file.
The Blue default skin
The Arial Western-1 font file.

3. Unpack the three files above using Ark by first creating a directory
for each of the three files (name them whatever you want), e.g.
mplayer-basic, blue, arial. Right click on the tar file and click on
"Extract". This will extract the contents into the corresponding
directory. So the mplayer-basic directory should now be filled with all
sorts of subdirectories and files.

4. In the console go to the mplayer-basic directory and, AS USER, type:

./configure --enable-gui

This will install the GUI version of Mplayer on your system. The whole
thing should take under 15 minutes (on my Dell Dimension 8200, 1.8 G
system).

Mplayer will be installed into /usr/local/ and this is a good thing
because Xandros/Debian leaves /usr/local alone for users to do with it
whatever they want.

Here is what you should see in the console:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ whereis mplayer
mplayer: /usr/local/bin/mplayer /usr/local/etc/mplayer
/usr/local/lib/mplayer
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

5. Now comes the funny part: believe it or not, but even though you
selected to install the GUI version of mplayer (which ordinarily is a
command-line application), you will not see it as yet in X11. That is
because Mplayer does NOT, I repeat, does NOT come with a default GUI
skin. You have to add a GUI skin for MPlayer to open at all. So, to add
the GUI, first extract the Blue default Skin and add it to the
/usr/local . You might as well also add the Arial font. Add them as
follows:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/local/share/mplayer$ ls
font Skin
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/local/share/mplayer$ cd font

Please note that a) Skin is capitalized (initial caps) and b) the
specific skin directory (whatever the original name) must be called
"default".

6. The GUI executable for Mplayer is NOT mplayer but "gmplayer". Create
a shortcut, add /usr/local/bin/gmplayer and an icon (I use the same one
that comes with Xine), and then double-click. It should launch Mplayer
flawlessly. Try out a DVD. Remember to select DVD in Mplayer: Right
click on the big Mplayer splash screen, select DVD, Open Disk. Press
Enter.

RealPlayer Autoupdate Error with Mplayer Plugin?

2004-01-20 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

I am very pleased with my Mplayer plugin in Mozilla. However, when I try to
run RealPlayer embedded files I get

http://www.johnkerry.com/

(To to right column, middle: Recent TV Ads, A Good American, Real, DSL)

I get a strange error message:

"You do not have the necessary user permissions to enable Autoupdate. "

What in the world is RealPlayer talking about?

On the other hand, if I select the same clip using Windows Media Player, it
works flawlessly.

Would really appreciate help on this.

Thank you so much.

Benjamin

Mplayer Plugin vs. Mozilla plugin -- Footnote

2004-01-21 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear Roberto and friends:

Just a footnote to my earlier question about a possible conflict between the
mplayer plugin and the moz plugin:

I was thinking, for instance, of MPEG, which is supported by both plugin. How
is this conflict resolved? Which plugin launches Mpeg files? I would want the
mplayer plugin to handle them (and other multimedia files). But if I use the

Re: How Do I Update to Gnome 2.6?

2004-06-14 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear Ed:

I don't use Debian. I use the Debian-based Xandros Linux. But I would advise
you very strongly to read some of the reviews of Gnome 2.6. They are
horrendous. Just look for them at LinuxToday. The consensus is that if you
really want Gnome 2.6, you should wait till your distro has upgraded to it.
Otherwise, you'll be facing one hell of a nightmare both installing and
running it.

Re: QuickTime for Linux?

2004-02-24 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear Micha:

I'm enclosing a copy below of my instructions for installing Mplayer and
Mplayerplug-in for Xandros/Debian. They will apply just as well to Debian
itself. Note that you need to install Mplayer with a special argument in
order to get the GUI version. It's all here. Just read below.

Benjamin

Dear friends:

If you want to play Windows Media Player and QuickTime on Linux (and the
latest versions, to boot), I strongly recommend MPlayer. Using the Mplayer
plugin, you will be able to play WMP and QT (and the latest versions, to
boot) in Mozilla, Netscape, Konqueror and Opera.

Since Linux already has great DVD players (Xine, Ogle and Vlc), the main
reason for adding Mplayer is not so much for playing DVD's (though it does it
as well as the other players). It's for the browser plugins. And, believe me,
it's well worth the effort. And that is why I have taken the trouble to write
these instructions for those who could not install Mplayer using the other
instructions on our forums.

Before I proceed, you might wonder: Why is Mplayer so difficult to install?
Well, in my research online, I came across the following article on this
whole issue. Bottom line: the authors of Mplayer apparently have an attitude.
Here is the URL (middle of page):

Mplayer: The Project from Hell
http://www.linuxworld.com/story/32880.htm

OK, now on to the instructions. Here goes:

I. Installing MPlayer.

We'll install the graphical version of Mplayer.

1. In Xandros Networks, download and install the gcc 3.33 file, libgtk1.2-dev
and the libpng12-dev libraries. You will need them both to recompile the
mplayer file from source.

2. Go to the MPlayer home page at:

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design6/news.html

If you can't access them directly, do it by typing "mplayer" in Google.

Now download the following files:

The MPlayer 1.0pre3. SOURCE tar file.
The Blue default skin
The Arial Western-1 font file.

Binary Codecs:

All-in-One Package
More binary packages

(These are for Linux, of course, NOT for Windows -- that's what the text
means)

3. Unpack the files above using Ark by first creating a directory for each of
the three files (name them whatever you want), e.g. mplayer-basic, blue,
arial. Right click on the tar file and click on "Extract". This will extract
the contents into the corresponding directory. So the mplayer-basic directory
should now be filled with all sorts of subdirectories and files.

4. In the console go to the mplayer-basic directory and, AS USER, type:

./configure --enable-gui --enable-win32

This takes about one minute.

Now type:

make

This will create the mplayer program. This takes under 15 minutes (on my Dell
Dimension 8200 1.8 G with 512 meg of RAM)

Then type:

make install

This takes a few seconds.

This will install the GUI version of Mplayer on your system.

Mplayer will be installed into /usr/local/ and this is a good thing because
Xandros/Debian leaves /usr/local alone for users to do with it whatever they
want.

Here is what you should see in the console:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ whereis mplayer
mplayer: /usr/local/bin/mplayer /usr/local/etc/mplayer /usr/local/lib/mplayer
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

NOTE: Now run /usr/local/bin/mplayer in the console ONCE in order to create
the /home/user/.mplayer directory.

5. Now comes the funny part: believe it or not, but even though you selected
to install the GUI version of mplayer (which ordinarily is a command-line
application), you will not see it as yet in X11. That is because Mplayer does
NOT, I repeat, does NOT come with a default GUI skin. You have to add a GUI
skin for MPlayer to open at all. So, to add the GUI, first extract the Blue
default Skin and add it to the /usr/local/share/mplayer. You might as well
also add the Arial font. Add them as follows:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cd /usr/local/share/mplayer
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/local/share/mplayer$ ls

Straw RSS News aggregator -- Install and Tutorial?

2004-02-27 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

1) I've downloaded the latest Straw tarball 0.22. NO problem with
dependencies. Xandros 2.0/Debian took care of all that. In fact, I can easily
install Straw 0.19.2, but I would like to install the latest 0.22 version by
recompiling the tarball. However, I don't have a clue as to how to do this. I
don't see a "configure", "make" or "make install". Obviously, things are done
differently with Straw and Python. Could you please provide precise details
on how to install Straw?

2) Where in the world can I find a tutorial on Straw? A User's Tutorial on how
to use RSS in Straw. I've searched using Google, and all i've come up with is
a "tutorial" for installing Straw as rpm. I need a User's Guide to RSS and
how to use it in Straw.

Thank you.

Screensaver fails!

2004-03-01 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

[Using Xandros 2.0/Debian]

I have installed and uninstalled a number of programs -- all of them either
from XN (with only the two XN sources) or else by recompiling source tarballs
(all of which go into /usr/local -- which has no effect, I am told, on the
operation or stability of Xandros). For some strange reason, my screensavers
(both the KDE screensavers and the GLX rss-glx screensavers -- both from XN)
no longer work EXCEPT for "Euphoria GL" (which works fine). None of the other
screensavers work. I've tested them all (by clicking on the "test" button at
the bottom of the list). They all used to work perfectly well. Any idea what
could be wrong, and how I can reactivate them. Is it some file that I need to
configure? I tried to reinstall both "kscreensaver" and "rss-glx" in apt-get
with the --reinstall option. They reinstalled fine, but the screensavers
still don't work (except for Euphoria GL). There is nothing wrong with my
glx. I checked by typing "glxinfo" in the console.

Thank you so much.

Mplayer won't "make" during install

2004-03-02 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

I configured the Mplayer-1.0pre3 source tarball successfully. No error
messages of any sort. (/configure --enable-gui --enable-win32). I was then
told to proceed with "make". And, suddently, this is what happens:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/L-Files/Downloads/Mplayer/MPlayer-1.0pre3$ make
make: Nothing to be done for `all'.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/L-Files/Downloads/Mplayer/MPlayer-1.0pre3$

Same if I do "make" as root:

Dell:/home/sher/L-Files/Downloads/Mplayer/MPlayer-1.0pre3# make
make: Nothing to be done for `all'.
Dell:/home/sher/L-Files/Downloads/Mplayer/MPlayer-1.0pre3#

I tried several times and I keep getting this same message. What does this
mean, please? Why can't I "make" the mplayer executable?

I would appreciate your help in troubleshooting this puzzling development.

Thank you so much.

Video great, Audio dead!

2004-03-08 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

I'd appreciate your help. I've just reinstalled my system and with it Mplayer.
Mplayer works fine, both video and audio. The maplayerplugin (latest version:
2.45) is listed properly under Mozilla, About Plugins. However, mplayerplugin
plays only the VIDEO of the QuickTime movie trailers, NOT THE AUDIO. On the
other hand, it plays both the video and audio fine at CBSNews and the IBM
Linux .ASF format commercials (again, both video and audio) . So, I can't
figure out what the problem is. Could you please try the QuickTime movie
trailers and see if the audio is working. The video is just great. No skips,
etc. I do not recall having ANY audio problems in my previous installations.

Thank you.

Koffice installs but won't run

2004-03-12 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

[Using Xandros 2.0/Debian and KDE 3.1.4]

I decided to install Koffice 1.3 on my system by recompiling from source
tarball. The installation seems to have been a complete success. I installed
all of the prerequisites mentioned on the Koffice source web page. And when I
first ran ./configure (as user), I discovered several more dependencies that
were lacking in my distro. I installed them all successfully from my own
distro's sources. The second time I ran ./configure, it was a complete
success, without a SINGLE error message or missing this or that or anything.
It concluded with a "Good", now go on to "make." The "make" stage (as user)
went through smoothly as did the final "make install" (as root). Not a single
error message. Like a dream. Koffice installed everything in /usr/local/kde,
a nice, safe place.

Secondly, I'd like to mention that I also installed kdeutils 3.1.5 from
source tarball. The installation was a total success, and its applications
 are working fine.

Here is a printout of the /usr/local/kde/bin showing both koffice and
kdeutils:

Konqueror goes crazy -- endless loop

2004-03-12 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

When I click on a URL in Kmail (where the browser to be invoked is Konqueror,
as set in Control Panel, File Manager, File Associations), it launches
infinite iterations of Konqueror, literally, one after another after another.
This does NOT happen when I invoke Konqueror by itself. It comes on only
ONCE. This problem could have been caused by the XN upgrade yesterday. I
tried to solve it by reinstalling Konqueror. No change. How do I stop this?
The same happens in other applications when I invoke the browser. What could
be causing this? How do stop this madness?

Aptitude "#Broken: 4" message -- Confused!

2004-02-02 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

Just for the fun of it, I downloaded and installed "Aptitude", At the top on
the menu it says:

Aptitude 0.2.13 #Broken: 4 Will free 9375kb DL size: 13.9

This appears on the third line of the menu BEFORE I actually use it in any
way. Does this really mean that I have four broken packages? This couldn't be
true. I checked apt-get update carefully and Synaptic. Both clearly say: 0
broken packages, etc. There is no question about it. If so, then what does #
Broken: 4 mean, please.

This is really making me anxious. Would really appreciate a clarification.

Thank you so much in advance.

K3b won't compile

2004-02-12 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

I would really appreciate your help in recompiling K3b 0.11.2. I have
installed every library or file mentioned during install but it still won't
configure. Could you please take a look at my config.log and tell me what's
wrong? You'll find it at:

Thank you so much.

URGENT -- Apt-get fiasco

2004-02-14 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

[Using Xandros 2.0/Debian]

This morning I noticed that I could no longer install anything from Xandros
Networks. I drew the conclusion that I had been pushing the envelope to the
breaking point, installing from all sorts of sources, including unstable
(though with a /etc/apt/preferences file). Humbled by this experience, I
figured that I had better do a complete, fresh install of Xandros 2.0
Standard and this time really be strict and disciplined with myself. So, I
deleted the entire installation and started from scratch. This time, I
restricted myself to Xandros Networks and only to its two default sources (XN
1 and XN 2). In fact, I installed Xandros' own applications first and only
then was about to start installing some applications from the second XN
unsupported Debian source in XN. And suddenly, after a good 3 or 4 hours of
installation, with what looks like a perfect installation, XN seems to have
collapsed. I cannot install ANYTHING, including XN's own applications, i.e.
from XN1 (with the default XN symbol) using the STANDARD option under Edit,
Standard (instead of Expert). I've tried at least a dozen of them and they
all give me the same error message. Please click on this link for a
screenshot:

http://www.websher.net/xn-1.png

And here is the output from the console when I tried to install this same
file, the GCC 3.3 development files using apt-get:

Dell:/# apt-get -f install gcc-3.3
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:

None of this makes any sense to me. I did try to use the Xandros Restore
function, but it didn't make any difference whatsoever.

I would very much appreciate your help and advice. I have no idea what's going
on and how to proceed.

Thank you so very much.

Win4Lin -- Security patches, anti-virus, spyware?

2004-02-16 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

[Using Xandros 2.0/Debian]

I'd appreciate advice from those of you who are using Win4Linux:

One big question I've never been clear about. The Win4Lin FAQ says NOT to
install any Microsoft security patches or updates. Could you please clarify
this for me. Should I install ANY Microsoft security or critical patches,
SOME, ALL or NONE on Win98SE in Win4Lin? Is Win4Linux essentially protected
by Linux and its kernel and, of course, the fact that I use Win4Lin
exclusively as user?

What about installing Norton anti-virus or any spyware programs? Do I need any
of these programs?

Thank you so much.

MplayerPlugin ALMOST Works!

2004-02-16 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

[Using Xandros 2.0/Debian Linux, Mplayer 1.0pre3 and mplayerplugin
2.11-1.386.deb]

I installed Mplayer with the codecs, etc. Mplayer (gmplayer) workes
beautifully (Hollywood DVD's), etc. I then installed Mplayer plugin. It
installed fine and shows clearly in Mozilla 1.4 under About Plugins and I
then configured the mplayerplugin-conf file as directed by Mplayer-plugin's
web site.

What happens is that when I launch a video (e.g. http://www.cbsnews.com), the
Mplayerplugin starts working. I can see it beginning to download. In fact,
sometimes it actually shows it downloading with the progress bar. But it
never actually plays the video. Here are some screenshots and the relevant
files:

Screenshots:

http://www.websher.net/mplayer-plugin1.png

http://www.websher.net/mplayer-plugin6.png
http://www.websher.net/mplayer-plugin7.png
http://www.websher.net/mplayer-plugin8.png

Sometimes Mplayer says Downloaded 404, sometimes 500-950kb and then stops.

Here is the relevant data:

cat: mplayerplugin.conf: No such file or directory
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc$ cat mplayerplug-in.conf
#debug=1
#logfile=$HOME/mpp.log

#enable-real=0
#enable-wm=1
#enable-qt=1
#enable-mpeg=1
#qt-speed=med
#rtsp-use-tcp=0
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc$

After making these changes, I deleted the /home/.mozilla/pluginreg.dat file,
rebooted and tried again (as instructed by Mplayer-plugin), but Mplayer plugin
still wouldn't play the video. Here is the current pluginreg.dat file:

Fwd: Mplayer-plugin -- SOLVED!

2004-02-16 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

Problem solved. Thanks to a suggestion from one of the mplayer-plugin team, I
installed the command-line "mplayer" version of Mplayer in addition to
mplayer-gui and mplayer-common.Apparently mplayer-plugin needs the
command-line "mplayer" to work.

By the way, I got the Debian packages by downloading the rpms from Falsehope
(see Mplayer's web site http://www.mplayerhq.com). I then converted them to
Debian using "alien."

The "mplayer" version of Mplayer is just one executable. You put it in /usr/
bin, run "mplayer" from the command line once, then go back to
www.cbsnews.com and, voila, all the videos play!

How glorious!

Thanks so very much.

Benjamin

"Alien" from Red Hat rpm or Fedora Core rpm?

Dear friends:

A quick question: can "alien" convert from Fedora Core RPM as well as Red Hat
RPM? More importantly: Does it make a difference?

Thank you.

Mplayer "make all" error message

2004-02-17 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

First, my sincere thanks to all of you who wrote in or commented on the
Mplayer rpm to deb issue. I did "succeed" in both installing it and playing
it, but I've decided to take the advice of senior, more experienced members
of both Xandros and Debian and stay strictly within the confines of Xandros
and Debian sources, file types, etc. etc. I have therefore done a clean,
fresh install of Xandros 2/Debian, deleting all partitions, reformatting,
writing new partitions and starting from scratch. So far, the new
installation looks great.

To install Mplayer, I want to use only authentic Debian testing components.

So, I went to Mplayer's home page and studied the documentation as best I
could. Their URL is at:

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/install.html#softreq

Here are the highlights;

BEGIN

1.2.5. Features

*

Decide if you need GUI. If you do, see the GUI section before compiling.
*

If you want to install MEncoder (our great all-purpose encoder), see the
MEncoder section.
*

If you have a V4L compatible TV tuner card, and wish to watch/grab and
encode movies with MPlayer, read the TV input section.
*

There is a neat OSD Menu support ready to be used. Check the OSD menu
section.

Then build MPlayer:

./configure
make
make install

At this point, MPlayer is ready to use. The directory $PREFIX/share/mplayer
contains the codecs.conf file, which is used to tell the program all the
codecs and their capabilities. This file is needed only when you want to
change its properties, as the main binary contains an internal copy of it.
Check if you have codecs.conf in your home directory (~/.mplayer/codecs.conf)
left from old MPlayer versions, and remove it.

Note that if you have a codecs.conf in ~/.mplayer/, the builtin and system
codecs.conf will be ignored completely. Do not do this unless you want to
fiddle with MPlayer internals as this can can cause many problems. If you
want to change the codecs search order, use the -vc, -ac, -vfm, or -afm
options either on the command line or in your config file (see the manual
page).

Debian users can build a .deb package for themselves, it's very simple. Just
exec

END

Using this information and the latest Mplayer 1.0pre3 sources, I tried and
have partially succeeded in recompiling it. I installed all of the necessary
libraries, etc. from my two default Xandros/Debian sources.

I succeeded in the all-important configuration part. I configured it:

./configure --enable-gui

Configuration was a total success (I was told at the end of the configuration
that it was a success). However, When I try to move to the next "make" stage,
I get a strange error message:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/L-Files/Downloads/Mplayer/MPlayer-1.0pre3$ make
make: Nothing to be done for `all'.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/L-Files/Downloads/Mplayer/MPlayer-1.0pre3$

What does this "Nothing to be done for 'all' mean, please". What's missing and
what should I do?

The most intriguing line of all from the Mplayer Documentation above is the
following:

"Debian users can build a .deb package for themselves, it's very simple. Just
exec"

The author says "it's very simple. just exec. What does he mean, please. Would
appreciate an explanation

Re: Mplayer "make all" error message

2004-02-17 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear Stephen and friends:

You are absolutely right. All my thanks. I su to root and did "make install".
It installed just fine in /usr/local. Only problem is that the install
produced only "mplayer", the command-line executable but not the gui
"gmplayer" even though I most definitely configured it as:

./configure --enable-gui

Any suggestion on how I can create the gmplayer? The rest of the installation
with codecs, Skin and font and mplayerplug-in I am already very much familiar
with and it all should work fine. However, at this point I won't be able to
run Mplayer as a gui. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you so much.

Benjamin

Mplayerplug-in needs mozilla-dev 1.6

2004-02-17 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

[Using Xandros 2.0/Debian]

I am on the very last stage of installing my Mplayer by recompiling from
tarball source. I've been struggling for hours but the good news is that I
have succeeded completely (by following the arcane instructions in Mplayer's
Documentation) in installing MPLAYER itself. It plays DVD's beautifully. No
problem. All that's left is the mplayerplugin. I want to install this also
from source. In trying to do and in reading the comments below, it seems that
I need to install the mozilla-dev files, but since I use Mozilla 1.4, the
mozilla-dev 1.6 files (the only ones that will work with the new
mplayerplugin 2.11) will break my apt-get system. I would there very much
appreciate your help. Perhaps if you have a Debian package that will work
with Mozilla 1.4. I understand that you can compile the Deb on Moz 1.6 but
still use it safely in Moz 1.4. Is that true? But you can't install the
moz-dev packages in order to compile the mplayerplugin because it will break
my apt-get. I want to do it right. That's why I have been compiling
everything from tarball source. Is there any way to complete this last step
safely? Unfortunately, Xandros 2.0 has not yet upgraded their Mozilla 1.4 to
1.6.

Thanks so very much again. Below is the output of my attempt to configure it:

RealPlayer 8/9 Plugins in Linux -- Instructions

2004-02-19 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

Here is the lowdown on the whole RealPlayer issue:

The latest version of RealPlayer, RealOne that is currently used with Linux is
RealOne Alpha. It has remained an alpha for two years and is essentially
dead. That is why many of its features do not work or work imperfectly. And
that is why the RealOne plugins do NOT work anywhere. Doing a little research
on the subject online, I found out why.

The latest RealPlayer Gold version is RealPlayer 8, which works great. And
when you install the latest RealPlayer 9 codecs and plugins for it, you get
naturally RealPlayer 9, which plays all plugins on the Net in Mozilla: The
name of the file is:

rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin

You can find it at the RealPlayer Unix Community Page at:

Download Instructions
http://forms.real.com/real/player/unix/unix.html

(Be sure to select the Linux2x.libc6i386, NOT the libc6i386 RPM)

Installation Instructions:
http://forms.real.com/real/player/unix/unix.html

Now, first UNINSTALL whatever RealPlayer you already have on your system, that
is, most likely the RealONE.

Now, install RealPlayer8 in your home directory as user by first making it an
executable and then installing it:

$/home/user/chmod u+x rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin

And then:

$./rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin

After installation of RealPlayer8 (which is in your home directory), download
the RealPlayer9 codecs and plugins from:

http://realforum.real.com/cgi-bin/unixplayer/
showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=announcements&Number=3128&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5

Look for the RealPlayer 9 codecs/plugins in the top section of the page as
follows:

* Linux i386 (~795kb d/l):
http://docs.real.com/docs/playerpatch/unix/rv9_libc6_i386_cs2.tgz

Download, read the Readme file, extract the contents using the Right-click
context menu command "Extract" in your Xandros File Manager, then add the
codecs and plugins as instructed to the /home/user/RealPlayer8 Codecs and
Plugins directories:

I would simply copy all of the Codecs in the RV9 package into /home/user/
RealPlayer8/Codecs/ directory and all of the Plugins into the /home/sher/
RealPlayer8/Plugins directory.

One last critical step:

Copy the "rpnp.so" file from the /home/user/RealPlayer8 directory to the "/
usr/mozilla/plugins" directory. Don't forget. That's it. It should now work.

I think you will really like the RealPlayer 8/9 with its plugins. Now try the
plugins by first checking Mozilla. You should see the rpnp.so plugin listed
in Mozilla Help, About Plugins.

Now try your new RealPlayer 8/9 plugins by playing the movie trailers at:

http://www.hollywood.com

These videos WILL WORK! Both video and audio should be fine. But be sure to
try one of the older videos. The more recent videos are overloaded and often
not accessible due to demand.

Or, better yet, try the news videos from CBS News at:

http://www.cbsnews.com

Be sure to select RealPlayer in your preferences. Provided you have broadband,
the video/audio looks great and at a comfortable size screen box size.

Or try any of the videos from The Feeding Room at:
http://wgntv.feedroom.com/x/tiles.jsp

Finally, you can also play the videos from Reuters:

A final exciting note about the new Helix RealPlayer 10:

https://player.helixcommunity.org/

The new Helix RealPlayer 10 is already out in alpha form. It has a lot of
problems. It is NOT yet ready for prime time, but it soon will be. That
should really make everybody happy. Meanwhile, stick with RealPlayer 8/9.

Enjoy!

Nvu Free Web Program -- Linux's "Dreamweaver"

Dear friends:

In case you haven't heard, Linux now has its own Dreamweaver web program and
entirely free. You can get the first beta from:

http://www.nvu.com/

Would appreciate help with an error message I got in NVu:

I was trying to publish a file to my web site at:

http://www.websher.net/temp/

I checked and the file did not upload. Instead I got the 553 error message.
Any suggestions what could be wrong?

Thank you.

Creating Photoshop FIRE image in Gimp

2004-04-24 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

The Photoshop Techniques web site features the following spectacular FIRE
image created by Greg Vander Houwen:

http://www.photoshoptechniques.com/main/defaulth.php

Please note the Photoshop and especially the MOV tutorial available on the
page plus the detailed step-by-step instructions on this page (scroll down).

The big question: Can this image be created in Gimp 1.2 or Gimp 2.0? From what
I can see, the Gimp seems to offer just about everything that the Photoshop
instructions require, but I am not sure, especially the Liquify filter. I am
still a newbie in Photoshop/Gimp but I would very much like to create this
image in Gimp instead of Photoshop.

What do the Gimp experts say? Can it be done? Will the result be pretty much
identical (or even better)?

Finally, I have been told by the Photoshop Techniques forum that the author,
Greg, has permitted everyone copyright permission to use his tutorial to
create this image (or any variants of it), and that any images thus created
may also be used free of charge either for commercial or non-commercial
purposes provided the user has recreated the image himself/herself.

All my thanks in advance.

Urgent! -- New Debian 3.1R2 install -- Nvidia card not recognized: fuzzy desktop, 640X480 resolution

2006-05-14 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Decided to give the latest stable version of Debian 3.1Rc2 a chance so I
downloaded the first two CD's and burned them in Nero. Everything went
flawlessly. Literally. I was delighted. That is, until I booted up to
the new Debian and was I in for a shock. The install urged me not to
configure my Nvidia GeForce 2 card automatically so I didn't. But what I
saw when I got to the desktop was nothing but a fuzzy, 640 X 480 screen,
probably with 4 to 16 colors. Have no idea. The console was OK but very
large. I was also able to use apt-get and Synaptic. In Synaptic I
searched in vain for my video card. During install I selected VGA as a
generic card. I cound't even configure my Mozilla Thunderbird so I am
writing from my wife's Windows computer. Finally, I was taken into
Gnome. I thought Debian had a KDE desktop by default.

My top priority is to get my video in order. Could one of you Debian
experts please come to the rescue. I am at a complete loss.

Thank you so very much.

Ok, you have two options, use the convenient 'nv' driver, or use the
proprietary (and hence not so convenient) "NVidia" driver.

The free one does not have hardware accelleration, while the NVidia one
does, though.

Instead of using the 'vga' driver, use the 'nv' driver. vga is just
that, 640x480 at a resolution and refresh that absolutely every card
that supports vga can support, it is very basic.

As for KDE/Gnome, Debian does not come with a desktop "by default",
however (i imagine) for historical license reasons Debian installs Gnome
by default if you select "Desktop" in tasksel.

Dear Arafangion:

My sincere thanks for such a prompt reply. Two quick questions:

I downloaded the first two CD's of Deb 3.1 Rc2 dated April 20, 2006.
The Debian home page referred to them as the latest stable release
(with KDE 3.3) updated on 4-19-06. But when I looked at the sources in
Synaptic, I saw that my CD Roms were listed as sources but with
"unstable" instead of "stable" listed. Very confusing.

Secondly, where do I find the "nv" driver, let alone the NVidia driver?
In Synaptic? And how precisely do I install it. I'd hate to mess up my
entire installation. Would really appreciate precise instructions.

Thank you again for your kind help.

Benjamin

Dear Arafangion and friends:

May I ask for your help with the repository sources. Right now all I
have listed are my two CD Rom sources and a security source. No wonder
Synaptic lists only 2,500 or so packages instead of the 18,000 or so it
normally carries. May I ask if you could send me a list of three or
four legitimate sources (stable) that I can add to my sources list? But
why are my two CD sources listed as "unstable". That mystified me.

Thank you again.

Newbie video configuration -- Monitor and video settings

Dear friends:

I am about to install Debian once again. I made a mistake originally in
the video setting.

I have a Sony SDM-S73 TFT LCD Color 17 inch monitor which, it says,
fully complies with the DDC Plug & Play standards with Nvidia GeForece 2
AGP card for 3D Accelaration.

What precisely should I choose during Install. I want to be able to see
Debian with full optimum display in accordance with my monitor and card
without having to configure it afterwards. What you recommend. I would
really appreciate if you could be precise.

Thank you so very much.

Downloading Debian CD: "stable" or "testing"?

2005-07-11 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

I would like to download and install the latest Debian 3.1,
but even after a careful reading of all the info on the Debian
site, I am quite confused.

"Sarge" is now the STABLE release and "etch" is now the
TESTING release.

I would like to download the testing release so I would get
the latest possible versions of Debian packages. I imagine
that if I installed the stable release, that I would have to wait
till the current "sarge" stable release made them available.
On the other other hand, if I installed the current "etch"
testing release, I would get new releases as they become
available. For example, what happens when the new
OpenOffice 2.0 is out of Beta and released officialy? How
long would you have to wait to see it in the stable
distribution and how long in the testing distribution?

So, my question remains: which distribution iso image
should I do download? Is an iso for the testing even
available yet.

Very confused, as you can see.

I want to make sure I know what I am doing before I
download the iso image.

Thank you all.

Dear Leonid and friends:

So you would recommend installing the new "etch" testing distro?
Is an iso image available of the "etch" testing release?

That's what I find confusing. Since "sarge" is not longer "testing"

iso images for etch?

Thank you.

Downloading iso image through BitTorrent?

2005-07-11 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

I clicked on the "obtain your copy", then on "make a CD set
yourself". This immediately caused Debian to start downloading
its file with the "Installing Debian" message in the status bar (left).
Is this OK? I did install Bittorrent before downloading. How long
will it take to download and where will I find it? I downloaded it to
my Windows XP.

I assume, of course, that I will be able to dual boot. By the way, I
currently have another linux dual booting with Win XP. Will that be
a problem?

Thank you.

Which Debian Installer for Etch, please?

2005-07-11 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I am considering installing the new Etch testing distro. At
the recommendation of a list member, I went to the proper
Debian Installer site and am downloading the rc3 version of
the installer. I hope I am downloading the right installer.

My question is: If I install Etch, what Debian packages will
there be available for this distro? Will I have to wait till these
new testing Etch packages are made before I can install
them? Will my install be essentially barren at the present
time?

Thank you.

Dear kamaraju:

Actually, I noticed that I downloaded the latest version July
12, 2005. Hope that's OK.

I tried to access the packages.debian.org site but got a
wrong page. Perhaps the servers are busy.

What I meant to ask about the packages was: are some
programs not available as yet as debian packages?

Thank you.

P. S. I am still downloading the Sarge stable release. It's
taking a long time. I have an ADSL connection. Will decide
after it's download what to do.

Etch vs. Sarge -- can't make up my mind

2005-07-11 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

Based on what I have learned tonight about Debian, I am
not certain yet which option I will choose: Etch or Sarge,
testing or stable.

Here is my choice:

Choose Sarge (STABLE) which can only be updated with a
few specialized apt-get sources such as apt.get.org or
backports.org

OR

Choose Etch (TESTING) and get the latest releases until
Etch becomes stable.

I do have one more question about Etch: To install it, I have
downloaded the 100 MB + net install ISO file. What
happens when Etch reaches STABLE? Will I be able to
continue downloading TESTING packages. Or is this net
install and the "testing" distro really strictly an ETCH testing
distro. That is, when Etch becomes stable, can I just
continue downloading and upgrading packages in testing
(since I will be in testing) or will I have to start all over
again?

Would appreciate your clarification.

Thank you.

A Question about Bittorrent

2005-07-11 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

I am downloading the Sarge ISO using Bittorrent. Bittorent
says that it supports resume. So, I paused (i.e. stopped) my
download several times, even leaving Windows to do so.
When I come back and click on the original link in Debian, it
restarts my download. But there is no progress bar and no
partial file on my desktop or wherever. How can I be sure
that it is still downloading. It's been three hours. I use ADSL.

Thank you.

Where is the FTP site for Sarge, please?

2005-07-11 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

After much consideration, I've decided to go with Sarge and
add the apt-get.org and backports.org sources to
/etc/apt/sources.list

This seems to me the wisest course of action. I will have the
benefit of Debian's reputation for perfection and reliability
plus updates of my favorite applications as needed through
apt-get.org and backports.org. I assume that I will be able to
do this more or less seemlessly since these updated
packages will be specifically custom made for Sarge and
only Sarge.

My only problem is downloading the CD image. I've tried for
the past four hours with Bittorrent. The download has finally
ended with "Done" but I can't find it anywhere on my
system. I did a search in Windows on ".iso". This brought up
my existing iso images but nothing for Debian.

So, I am willing to download the CD image by FTP. But I
have tried several times to find the iso image and have
failed. I tried ftp.debian.org and cdimages.debian.org and I
just can't find the iso image.

My SmartFTP client has resume and a progress bar for
these things. Once I get the address I should have no
problem.

Would really appreciate your help. And please be precise.

Thank you so much.

Dear Alexandru:

Thanks so much for an excellent clarification.

Two follow-up questions:

1) I have decided a few minutes ago to go with Sarge for the
reasons you mentioned. If I add apt-get.org and backports.org to
my apt sources, will I be able to seamlessly add updated
applications as they become available? Is this a good idea?

2) I have alredy downloaded "netinstall" (rc3). I thought that was
for the testing distro. Can I use this also for Sarge?

My sincere apologies. You won't believe what happened. When I

enough to see the FTP sites. Too embarrassing to mention. But
that's the honest truth. I've already started my download of the

Sarge install perfect

2005-07-12 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

My thanks to everyone for your great advice, information and
help.

Finally downloaded the ISO, checked the MD5 alogorithm.
Everything OK. Then installed.

Install was flawless. Amazed. At least so far. I am now
downloading 510 MB (733 packages) for the Desktop
Environment option.

The Install is unbelievably simple. I don't know what it was like in
the past, but it's a piece of cake. The only thing you have to know
is where your Windows installation is. That's it.

Very pleased.

New install -- MTA mail needs to be reconfigured

2005-07-12 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

I finally installed my first Debian system earlier this morning and I
am very pleased with it. The install was flawless, but it was not
quite as easy as I thought because there were plenty more
questions AFTER the downloading of packages than I thought.
But all is well. However, as one would expect, there are always a
few issues that come up after a first install. I hope you can help
me with them. These are quite minor. But let me ask just one or
two at a time.

1) All of my devices seem to have been configured correctly,
including my sound and video. That is, the video and sound work
fine. However, I can't find a specific listing of my video card and
sound card. Where precisely are they listed?

2) My first really critical issue has to do with mail. During Install
MTA, I was asked which mail system I wanted. I was advised to
select Smart? (can't remember the second part of the word)
because I have a dynamic DHCP ADSL connection. So I selected
this option but it's clearly wrong because I am told

"Cannot connect to host localhost"

("localhost" is what I chose").

How do I access the mail configuration utility and how do I correct
my settings so I can receive and send mail?

Thank you so much.

Dear Roberto:

Thanks for the tip. My choice is to either install RealPlayer as a .bin file
or as an RPM (or, rather, after converting it to Deb by using alien). Which
one is preferable?

Finally, if I use the .bin file, should I consider using "stow" to install it
so that I can uninstall it, if necessary, in the future?

I've downloaded the "bin" version of RealPlayer 10. I imagine that this is the
one I should install (rather than converting the rpm to deb with alien).
Where does the "bin" install to: /usr/local? If so, could I use stow?

What's your recommendation?

Dear Cmetzler:

I appreciate your comments and will certainly take them to heart.

As for this specific question about the kernel, I admit that I did not
research the matter in Google. But in most cases the first place I go to is
Google. For example, I asked a question about my zip drive. Before posting
the question, I searched in Google and found a number of posts on the
subject. But none was helpful. Same for most of my posts. I could just
preface many of them with remark "I looked in Google but couldn't find
anything helpful". I have on occasion done this, and will do so more often in
the future.

I am not new to Linux, but I am new to Debian. I want to make sure that I am
following the right procedure. I read everything on the Debian home page
before making my decision as to which version to install, etc. I found the
explanations good but not good enough. They are still written from the point
of view of the engineer, the programmer. What a new, prospective Debian user
wants to know is what are the practical consequences of installing stable vs.
testing vs. unstable, etc. etc. I am very grateful to the people on the list
who responded. Without their help, I could not have figured out what really
goes on, the complications involving installation of non-Sarge applications,
let alone non-Debian applications, etc.

Bottom line is that I appreciate the help and will also try to help other
newbies when I can. I did promise that I would ask for help on one issue or
two at a time, and I am doing this to the best of my ability.

I felt and perhaps wrongly that the message about the Kernel Configurator was
important for Debian developers and that is why I mentioned it. But clearly I
went too far. It was not urgent and did not affect my system.

I am very pleased with Debian. Everything works fine. I am just trying to
fine-tune a few things that I am not clear about. My interest is in using
Debian, and I am grateful to the Debian organization for producing such an
outstanding Linux distro.

Thank you.

That just means that you don't have the source for your kernel installed. Instead, you have a pre-built binary. If you had compiled your own, you would by necessity have the source. Apparently this KDE Control Center thingy is just looking for the source, to read some information and present it to you in a nice format. Not finding the source, it instead generates this error.

No, it's nothing to worry about.

Dear Kent:

Thanks so very much. A real load off my mind.

This is a valid criticism that comes up here from time to time in
different forms. One suggestion I'd like to make: if there's
documentation (or explanatory paragraphs on web pages or whatever)
that wasn't able to help you, then later on, when you understand
that topic a little better, please consider volunteering just a small
amount of time to help improve it. I'm serious. A recurring gripe
about a lot of open source software had been documentation --
non-existent, or skeletal/incomplete, or aimed only at the guru and
not at the new user, etc. etc. Having encountered information which
should have been helpful but wasn't, you're in the ideal position to
help Debian (or any other project) get it right. No need to commit
tons of time -- just pick one small thing, one subsection of one
document or web page, and offer up some changes. Little things add
up, and any contribution is better than none. And hey, if it gets
in, you just became a contributor to the project.

Cheers,

-c

Dear CMetzner:

Thanks for understanding and thanks for the kind words.

My experience with Linux began with Red Hat 5.2 then followed Mandrake,
then Xandros. Xandros is a great distro, but the problem with them is
that they promise that you can install all the applications you want
from the Debian repository (they are a Debian derivative), but in fact
you can't. If you do, you quickly mess up your system. So, I wrote a
full-length Intro for Xandros Newbies about this, which is still
online. You might be interested in seeing it. If this is of interest to
Debian users, you are welcome to adapt it for Debian.

http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=5995&highlight=

You can also search for other of my posts under "Delphi123".

I myself left Xandros after about a year, to a large extent due to the
above-mentioned limitation. I have been dual-booting with WinXP most of
the time, then, in frustration, decided to leave Linux for a while. I
did consider installing Debian but kept waiting, like many others, for
the new Debian 3.1. Well, it's finally here and so I am back to Linux.

some sort of confirmation that something is happening, such as download

Printing in CUPS -- almost there!

2005-07-13 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I've spent the past hour searching in Google for articles that will
explain to me how to install my printer in Debian 3.1. I'm literally 99%
of the way there.

First, I found out that Debian 3.1 does not include the CUPS server by
default. So, I downloaded that via Synaptic. Then I downloaded hp-ppd
(for my Okipage 14e, which uses HP Laserjet 4 emulation). Then, I found
out that I need the gimp-print foomatic files, so I downloaded them as
well as other gimp files dependent on them. I then went logged out and
logged back in as root and configured the printer in Kprinter (KDE
Control Center, Peripherals). Configuration was a total success, and at
the end of it all I saw my Okipage printer listed at the top of the
printers. So what's wrong? Well, when I tried to print a test page, it
said: "print test successflly sent to the printer", but so far no actual
printing. My guess is that I am just one step away from actually
printing, but I am at a loss as to what is holding things up.

Would appreciate your help in resolving this issue.

Thank you.

printer did flash some lights to show it was receiving data and that you
did send the correct page size and didn't press any 'cancel' button on
the printer?

You should also check www.linuxprinting.org, particularly the
fora/discussions for your specific printer.

Did you follow:

Every printer I've set up using it was pretty painless. You need the
following packages. 'cupsys-bsd' is important and before changing
anything make sure it's installed.

cupsys
cupsys-bsd
cupsys-client
foomatic-bin
samba
smbclient

Dear Clive:

I have done as you instructed. In fact, I installed several other
packages listed on their page. Here is the output:

Dear friends:

I've spent the past hour searching in Google for articles that will
explain to me how to install my printer in Debian 3.1. I'm
literally 99% of the way there.

First, I found out that Debian 3.1 does not include the CUPS server
by default. So, I downloaded that via Synaptic. Then I downloaded
hp-ppd (for my Okipage 14e, which uses HP Laserjet 4 emulation).
Then, I found out that I need the gimp-print foomatic files, so I
downloaded them as well as other gimp files dependent on them. I
then went logged out and logged back in as root and configured the
printer in Kprinter (KDE Control Center, Peripherals).
Configuration was a total success, and at the end of it all I saw
my Okipage printer listed at the top of the printers. So what's
wrong? Well, when I tried to print a test page, it said: "print
test successflly sent to the printer", but so far no actual
printing. My guess is that I am just one step away from actually
printing, but I am at a loss as to what is holding things up.

Would appreciate your help in resolving this issue.

Dear friends:

I am still struggling with making my printer work. I installed all of
the cups files instructed to both by our list members and online at:

http://qref.sourceforge.net/Debian/reference/ch-install.en.html#s-cups

I then tried to configure my printer online. Once again, I am told that
the print test was sent successfully to the printer but the printer has
so far not printed anything. Please see screenshots:

Printer issue -- SOLVED!

2005-07-13 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

Printer issue resolved!

My printer is now working fine.

I called my printer company, Okidata, and, although they don't provide
tech support for Linux, their expert was able to figure out that I was
using the wrong emulation HP driver for Okipage 14e. The correct driver
is HP LaserJet 4P, NOT LaserJet 4Plus. That's how close the drivers are.
The "4Plus" driver will not print a page, even though Kprint sent it
successfully to the printer. As soon as I switched to "4P", it
immediately responded and printed out the wonderful test page.

Thank you all for your help.

Sarge vs. Stable in /etc/apt/sources.list

2005-07-14 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

I've noticed that some debian sources use the term "stable",
others use the term "sarge". I was advised by some members of
our list that I should change "stable" to "sarge" to assure
continuity. But when I did that, Synaptic complained of errors.

What happens when you find a source for certain applications, for
example, mplayer or whatever, that uses the term "sarge" instead
of "stable". Are you as the user allowed to change the word?

Aren't "stable" and "sarge" interchangeable in apt-get/synaptic?

This is the kind of practical question that, from my reading,
Debian does not explain in their documentation or does not
explain well.

Would appreciate your clarification?

Thank you.

Lorenzo Taylor wrote:

"sarge" and "stable" currently refer to the same Debian branch in the official
Debian mirrors. However, when Etch becomes stable, "stable" will refer to Etch
rather than Sarge and "sarge" will still refer to Sarge, which will then be
considered "old-stable". As for unofficial sources, they can call their
repositories whatever they like, so they may or may not link "stable" and
"sarge" to the same repository. It's their choice, cince they are not official
repositories.

At this time, you can decide whether to use the term "stable" or "sarge" in
official Debian sources. But if you want an automatic upgrade of all official
packages when Etch becomes stable, use "stable".

Lorenzo

FTP authentification issue

2005-07-14 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I have run into an unusual and inexplicable FTP authentification issue.
It's the first time I've ever had this problem in Linux, and I've been
using the same Dell 8200 Dimension computer for five years (on both
WinXP and different flavors of Linux).

I've discussed this with my IP and my web host. They have advised me
that it's working fine at their end and they have made sure to clear any
firewall obstacles.

My FTP works fine in Windows, but not in Debian. Or rather, let me say
that it was working fine the first two days of install, but for the past
three days has not.

The situation is rather confusing. First, here is the output of ftp in
the console. Clearly, it's working fine, showing the remote file system
and uploading and downloading successfully:

Can you launch URL from email application?

Dear friends:

The browser preference in KDE, Control Center, KDE Components, Component
Choose is set to Epiphany as it the html in File Associations.

I tried to change the browser to Firefox. Same strange results. Yet, no
problem in Evolution with Epiphany. So, it's not a browser issue.

Thank you.

Can you launch URL from email application? -- Correction

2005-07-15 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

My apologies. Just checked again. No problem with URL launching in Evolution

selecting Konqueror so it would work with Kmail but when I click on a URL,
Konqueror spins and shakes (literally shakes) in the taskbar and never
launches as can be seen from the screenshot online:

Thank you for your understanding.

stable vs. sargein apt-get: are they interchangeable?

2005-07-15 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

Just a brief follow-up note on our discussion of "stable" vs "sarge".

I replaced ALL of the "stable" in etc/apt/sources.list with "sarge". Then I
did #apt-get update. This updated the entire database. I then tested it by
downloading and installing two applications. No problems. No errors. No
broken files. Database unchanged: same 15,207 applications (1,200 on my
system, 0 broken, 0 to install or upgrade, 0 to remove). And, let me repeat,
NO errors of any sort, even on subsequent visits to Synaptic. Amazing!

Reporting from the frontlines :--)

Dear Kent:

A good suggestion, a good guess but not quite right in my case. I checked and
here is what it shows:

djview.desktopmahjongg.desktop
eog.desktop mimeinfo.cache
epiphany.desktop Mozilla.desktop
evolution-2.0.desktop Mozilla-editor.desktop
file-roller.desktop mozilla-firefox.desktop
freecell.desktop mozilla-thunderbird.desktop
galeon.desktopmozilla-thunderbird-pm.desktop
gataxx.desktopmplayer.desktop
gcalctool.desktop nautilus-computer.desktop
gconf-editor.desktop nautilus.desktop

So that's not the issue.

Thank you. Will let the list know when I find the solution. Have been in touch
with kmail-devel and I think they'll resolve it.

Dear Wim:

Thank you for writing.

How would I verify this. Please give me the precise command in the console and
I'll be glad to do this.

Dear Kent:

First, my thanks for your kind help. Sorry for the delay. Had to do a few
things.

Your advice has yielded interesting results. I created another user in my
wife's name. Then logged in to her account and tested the FTP. Results as
follows:

1) ftp runs fine in console. Normal

2) IglooFTP runs fine. Normal

3) Kbear runs fine. Normal

4) gftp runs fine but takes about 45 seconds to list the fire system.

So, I went back to my own account and tested everything again and found to my
surprise that:

1) ftp runs fine in console as before.

2) Kbear runs fine this time. This is the FTP client that was screaming about
authentification (see yesterday's screenshot). Now it's working fine. Tested
all three of my web sites. Fine.

3) The only problem remains IglooFTP. It runs fine in my wife's account.
Perfect. But does not run in mine at all. See screenshots from yesterday:

http://www.websher.net/temp/IfglooFTP1.jpg

Any idea what's causing this and why suddenly Kbear works fine and why
IglooFTP works fine in my wife's account but not in mine?

One other thing: All ftp clients worked fine the first day or so, so certain
installations of certain files or certain configuration changes must have
affected their performance.

Thanks so much. Hope you can help me resolve this.

Can you launch URL from email application

2005-07-15 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear David and friends:

Good news!

I tested the URL again and here is what happened: When I click on the URL, the
box comes up. Normally, after a while I just get fed up and shut it down.
This time I decided to wait it out. At last, after an eternity, two things
happen: first I see the skeletal form of my home page (no images), then,
after another eternity, I see the site itself. So, clearly, it's working but
at a snail's pace. Here are the screenshots as it happens:

http://www.websher.net/temp/openURL2.jpg
http://www.websher.net/temp/openURL3.jpg

The mail client is Kmail. The browser is Konqueror. Please remember that it
works perfectly well with Evolution and Thunderbird.

Hope this helps.

Dear Sergio:

The most popular is K3b. If you distro doesn't carry it, just find an rpm or
compile it from source tarball. After you install it, be sure to run the
Setup or click from the Help menu and Test Your System. Remember to ALWAYS
run it as root and to download the cdrdao file that it needs. To help you run
it always as root, use KDE Kmenuedit. Find K3b (after installation), then
look for the options on the right. Just check "run as another user", then
type "root" and SAVE (on the top left under File). This way, you never have
to worry about it. It will always ask you for your root password.

Dear Sergio:

DO NOT INSTALL AN RPM. I forgot that we are both using Debian. You can
download it from apt-get or Synaptic:

apt-get install k3b

My sincere apologies.

Can't launch URL from email -- Note

2005-07-15 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear David and friends:

If openURL3.jpg lookedlike openURL2.jpg, don't worry. I've just correct it. I
reran the URL launch and what you see in the third image is the final landing
with images. But it took a l-o-o-o-ong time. About five minutes.

Dear Kent:

You are absolutely right! I deleted the .IglooFTP-PRO config file, restarted
Igloo and everything now works fine. I did the same for gftp, but gftp still
connects rather slowly, just as before. Great job of troubleshooting.

Dear Kent:

A very good guess but not quite. I tested Kmail in my wife's account. Exact
same problem: first a box, then after quite a while you see the outlines of
my web site (i.e. sans the images), then in the progress bar you can see 25%.
Then, after another excruciating minute, the entire page downloads. When it
does, it looks fine. I am sure it's just a matter of speed.

Dear David, Kent and friends:

The "URL won't launch problem is directly related to Konqueror, NOT to Kmail.
I tested a number of combinations and at last was able to prove this.

When I changed the html file association to Epiphany AND also selected
Epiphany as my browser of choice under Component Choice (KDE Components in
Control Center), the problem disappeared. I tested in Kmail, and Kmail
launched the URL instantly through Epiphany. It's clearly a Konqueror issue
because when I launch Konqueror by itself and try to access the same URL, it
takes an eternity (as already described). On the other hand, when I do the
same in Epiphany on its own, it launches it instantly.

So, clearly it's a Konqueror issue. Its rendering engine is very, very slow.

But that's not all. When I opened one of my web sites LOCALLY with Konqueror,
it launched the index.html file instantly. So somewhere between my computer
and the Internet Konqueror is enountering a serious problem.

Thank you all for your kind help with this issue.

"makeobj" wrapper script -- how to use it?

2005-07-15 Thread Benjamin Sher
Dear friends:

I am trying to install a KDE program called Kradio-1 from source tarball.
Configure went fine. I then was warned NOT to use "make" but instead
unsermake. Well, unsermake is not available in Synaptic, not even for Etch (I
switched to Etch earlier today. (No errors, no problem. apt-get is really
amazing!). Since it is not in our apt-get repositories, I figure there must
be a reason. So, although I could download and install it from CVS, I'd
rather not. Fortunately, the program offers another option called "makeobj",
a wrapper script. "makeobj" is available in Debian. It is already installed.

Here is what man makeobj says:

NAME
makeobj - run make from the correct directory

SYNOPSIS
   makeobj [ make-argument ... ]

DESCRIPTION
makeobj is a wrapper around make which basically checks whether it's in
the source directory or the build directory and changes to the correct
   directory before calling make.

The command-line arguments will (generally) be passed directly to make.

This script is only useful if the source directory is different from
the build directory and the Makefiles are kept in the build directory,
as is common for instance when building the KDE sources.

One of the environment variables OBJ_SUBDIR or OBJ_REPLACEMENT should
be set to indicate where the build directory is in relation to the
   source directory.

 Manual page makeobj(1) line 1

This utility is part of the KDE Software Development Kit.

ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES
Note that only one of OBJ_SUBDIR and OBJ_REPLACEMENT should be used.
If the build directory is simply a subdirectory of the source direc-
tory, the simpler variable OBJ_SUBDIR should be used.

   OBJ_SUBDIR
Indicates that the build directory is in the given subdirectory
of the source directory. For instance, if the source directory
is kdesdk and the build directory is kdesdk/obj-i386-linux, then
OBJ_SUBDIR should be set to obj-i386-linux.

   OBJ_REPLACEMENT
A sed expression that is used to transform the source directory
into the build directory. For instance, if the source directory
is ~/src/kdesdk and the build directory is ~/src/kdesdk-obj,
then OBJ_REPLACEMENT could be set to s#kdesdk#kdesdk-obj#.

I have a vague idea of what this command does, but I have no idea how to
actually use it. That is, what command would I use to build this application.

Could someone please suggest a specific command to allow me built this
program?

Thank you so much.

Benjamin
