exim configuration: "Return-path" and "Sender" headers
I have both of these headers "wrong", i.e. they contain [EMAIL PROTECTED], which is my user name at my local machine in my home (unregistered, of course) domain. Help identify motherboard (486)
Hi all: I've inherited a i486 DX4 from a friend, that's supposed to run at 100MHz. However the computer seems very slow. There's no documentation to the motherboard, and I'm afraid I'm running it with "Turbo" turned off, and I don't know which pins are responsible for "Turbo" (they are only marked numerically). Neither can I connect internal speaker. The motherboard has a Socket 3, ALI M1429 A1 chipset, American Megatrends AMIBIOS with inscription "486DX ISA BIOS", 7 ISA slots, 8 slots for 39-pin RAM. The only marking on the board itself is "PAT 48 AV - 1.10". It came with an IDE controller card with no identification on it; it supports up to 2 IDE devices + floppy, and has chips with markings "UMC UM82C865F" on it. It looks like it was bouhg in 1994 or around that time. I'd appreciate any pointers as to where to look for its specs. I'm also interested to know whether there have been any BIOS updates, and BIOS manual too, because I've never had a 486 before... I intend to use it as a firewall. My question is: why is the local network bound to default gateway? Shouldn't 192.168.1.0 be bound to 192.168.1.2? I suspect that I misunderstand something, since the computers are able to comunicate. Well, I didn't update the kernel ppp sources. The README.linux, that came with pppd-2.3.10 said that if using kernel above 2.2.7, it's unnecessary. SCSI modules won't autoload
Hi all: I have Deb2.1, 2.2.5 kernel with QlogicISP SCSI adapter support compiled as modules. I use with it Panasonic CDR (the only device on the adapter). I was hoping that whenever I mount a CD-Rom with $ mount /dev/scd0 /mnt/scsi neccessary modules would load automatically. However, mount complains that mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/scd0 as a block device (maybe `insmod driver'?) After I do "$ modpobe qlogicisp", everything starts working. I only use that devices once in a while, so I want the modules to autoload/unload as I need them. I also want that CD-ROM to be user-mountable. I have the followint in my /etc/fstab: /dev/hdd/mnt/cdrom iso9660 ro,user, noauto, unhide /dev/scd0 /mnt/scsi iso9660 ro,user, noauto, unhide So when I type "$ mount /mnt/scsi" as a regular user *after* the modules have been manually loaded, it mounts OK. Adding stuff to init
Hi all: I've got to admit that I'm a bit intimidated by the Debian's startup scripts. I read through update-rc.d's man page, but the format of skelton scares me - I don't understand it yet. I need to add 2 things to startup sequence: 1. "aumix -L" to be started as soon as the sound modules initialize. Nothing to be done for it at shutdown. 2. "fetchmail" to be started as soon as the network is configured (assume that I have a permanent IP). Needs to be stopped with "fetchmail -q" at shutdown. Can some kind soul tell me how to set this up? That's why you should usually do "make zImage". "make bzImage" is needed if the zImage turns out to be too big, or if you want to put the image onto a floppy. In other words, bzImage is compressed more than zImage. So, AFAIK you can use bzImage just the same way as zImage. Don't forget to update your /etc/lilo.conf to reflect the right name. If this is your first kernel compile then you probably have an image named vmlinuz in your lilo.conf. Change that for zImage. Then *IMPORTANT* don't forget to run lilo before you restart - or you won't be able to boot. Upgrading kernel of the same tree
I have been using every 2.2.x kernel as soon as they came out. To fascilitate configuration I saved configuration into an "alternative file" in my home directory from 'menuconfig'. xkilled app takes 100% of CPU
Hi all: I've experienced the following phenomenon today: While reading news from Emacs, I clicked on an URL, which opened a Netscape window. I browsed for some time, and then Netscape hung because of some Java applet, I think. I couldn't close it the regular way, so I had to xkill it. A couple of minutes later I noticed that my CPU load indicator shows continuous 100% utilization. I ran top, and sure enough, Netscape was still there consuming resources like hell. I killed it, and it turned zombie, but another process continued what it was doing - it looked like a call to Netscape that was executed from Emacs, containing the actual URL. So this call was PID 362, and Netscape (zombie now) 363. No matter what signals I sent to 362 and 363, I couldn't change anything. I tried kill and killall. I had to reboot because I felt sorry for my poor overworked overclocked Celeron. :) So, what do you generally do with unkillable apps? I know there must be a way to do it w/o rebooting. For what it matters, I run Debian2.1 with 2.2.6, XFree3.3.2, WindowMaker... Netscape is 4.5 Thanks for any suggestions, -- Arcady Genkin "I opened up my wallet, and it's full of blood..." - GsYDE

Cdrdao problems
Mailed and posted Hi all: I have a SCSI Panasonic 7502b CDR-drive. I've been fighting the whole day to burn a copy of an audio CD, and am ready to give up. :( The drive happily extracts audio at x8 and writes at x4 under Windows. I'm using Slink and uninstalled all cdr tools, that came with it, and compiled myself the newest versions. cdrdao won't work with "read-cd" command. It says: # cdrdao read-cd --device /dev/sg0 cd.toc /dev/sg0: MATSHITA CD-R CW-7502 Rev: 4.17 Using driver: Generic SCSI-3/MMC - Version 1.0 (data) (options 0x) Reading toc and audio data... ERROR: Sorry, this driver does not support reading audio data from CD. But I am able to read the disk into a .wav with cdparanoia. I then did the following: read the cd into data.wav with cdparanoia. Then read TOC with cdrdao with command "read-toc". So far so good. Then I tried to simulate write. As you can guess, it didn't work. Also, after the attempt, my CDR's "BUSY" LED stayed lit, and I can't eject the blank CDR or do anything with the drive. Below are the error messages that cdrdao produced. Can you please advise what I can do to get this thing working? I have seen a report of the same drive working with cdrdao, so I guess I am doing smth wrong. (FWIW, the SCSI adapter is QlogicISP, and the kernel is 2.2.6, with SCSI support compiled as modules, including support for generic SCSI devices). # cdrdao simulate --device /dev/sg0 --speed 4 --datafile data.wav cd.toc /dev/sg0: MATSHITA CD-R CW-7502 Rev: 4.17 Using driver: Generic SCSI-3/MMC - Version 1.0 (data) (options 0x) Starting write simulation at speed 4... Then I have added the following to ~/.bash_profile: if test -e ~/.newuser; then echo "Change of password forced" /usr/bin/passwd rm ~/.newuser fi (please bear with me, this is the first shell script I have ever written :-/). This seems to do what I wanted, but I see a complication - a user can abort changing password by pressing CNTRL-C (just tried it). How can I make *absolutely* sure that the password gets changed the first time a user logs on? I think I could make a loop in the script, exit condition of which would be successful termination of passwd, right? I was stuck, and had to use DOS's format. :( Thanks for any recommendation! -- Arcady Genkin "I opened up my wallet, and it's full of blood..." - GsYDE
How harsh is switching Slink-Potato?
Hi all! I'm thinking of upgrading to Potato, because I want to use some of the newer stuff, (wine, for instance) that's compiled against glibc2.1. Should I expect some of my self-compiled programs not function correctly with glibc2.1? Just how exactly painful is it? TIA -- Arcady Genkin "I opened up my wallet, and it's full of blood..." - GsYDE
dosfsck - "Root directory has zero size."
Hi all: I've tried today to check my fatXX partitions for errors. dosfsck worked fine on a FAT16 partition, but won't even start checking the FAT32, saying "Root directory has zero size." What does it mean? TIA! -- Arcady Genkin "I opened up my wallet, and it's full of blood..." - GsYBE

Hmm. The man page says nothing about Fat16/Fat32 issues. It also doesn't refer to another program. In that case, are there other means of checking a fat32 partition? -- Arcady Genkin "I opened up my wallet, and it's full of blood..." - GsYBE

The question is, do the docs give a date > when it was last updated? If it was updated before fat32 became > "commonplace" about a year or so ago, it definately doesn't support it. Well it says December 31 1997. Fat32 existed then AFAIK. -- Arcady Genkin "I opened up my wallet, and it's full of blood..." - GsYBE

First, make subdirectories in /mnt to mount the drives in. For example : # mkdir /mnt/fat32 # mkdir /mnt/cdrom etc. then run # mount -t vfat /dev/hda3 /mnt/fat32 # mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom I don't know about zip-drive, but it shouldn't be awfully different. To automate the mounting at the boottime, add the following in your /etc/fstab /dev/hda3 /mnt/fat32 vfat defaults 0 2 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom iso9660 ro,user, noauto, unhide This would mount your fat32 partition every time you boot into linux, and also allow you to mount your cdrom with a simple command # mount /mnt/cdrom and also you won't have to become root to mount your cdrom. > I also have trouble whit Dosemu. everytime i start it, it says i don't have > any dos partitions. i have a 8.4 GB harddisk from WD, devided in three > sepperate disks. anacron job for a user?
Hi all: I want to set up a job to daily compress my nnml directories in ~/Mail/; for that I need to run a command: find ~/Mail -type f -name "*[0-9]" -print | xargs gzip --best I can't use crontab, because the computer is not on constantly and I want to make sure the job is executed. As far as I understood from anacron and anacrontab man-pages, it is not ment to be run on a user-level, right? Is the only way to set up an anacron job is through editing /etc/anacrontab or adding script to /etc/cron.daily? TIA -- Arcady Genkin "I opened up my wallet, and it's full of blood..." - GsYBE
