I use iceweasel at home and chromium at work. Both work pretty well. chromium (6.0.472.53) has the very nice "close a tab and get all its memory back" feature which makes it useful on my relatively memory-constrained work machine. However it does tend to use more memory than iceweasel while actually performing equivalent tasks, is generally buggier, and some features are much creakier (see below). Iceweasel (3.6.9) tends to grab memory and keep it (closing tabs may free some memory, may not), but eventually reaches a stable point and seems to do OK with memory once it reaches that (it may have long term leaks, but I generally close my browser every few hours anyway). It also has far superior [more functional, vastly faster] keyboard / address-bar functionality (e.g., the "awesomebar" ) than chromium, and generally feels quicker and more responsive. Overall I'd say I prefer iceweasel, but the chromium tab implementation make it a good choice in certain contexts. -Miles -- Quack, n. If you want your memory back in Iceweasel when closing a tab, it is possible to do this with the browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo¹ setting in about:config. Personally I find it very useful that accidental tab closing can easily be undone. > Iceweasel (3.6.9) tends to grab memory and keep it (closing tabs may > free some memory, may not), but eventually reaches a stable point and > seems to do OK with memory once it reaches that (it may have long term > leaks, but I generally close my browser every few hours anyway). > It also has far superior [more functional, vastly faster] keyboard / > address-bar functionality (e.g., the "awesomebar" ) than > chromium, and generally feels quicker and more responsive. Really? I haven't used Chromium that much yet, but it seems to display web pages much faster than Iceweasel. However, there are usability issues: no way to quickly enable/disable Javascript, no equivalent to about:config for instance. AFAIK, in your domain name settings, you can use the FQDN or the IP as nameserver. In your bind9 configuration file you have to point "ns1.livingwaters- international.org" to your IP address. I would suggest the use of a secondary DNS server from another company, just in case yours goes off-line. How to get rid of the websites' ads/flash ads, without loosing their (flash) content?
Hi, There are sometimes some websites (such as news ones) which make an extensive use of flash stuff. Amongst the animations, flash is sometimes also used for ads, etc., and I don't like this. Please not that I entered the zenity command in .xinitrc file and then I did: ln -s .xinitrc .xsession in order to make GDM read the file. It seems that GDM honors .xsession file and not .xinitrc [1]. detect ethernet card?
I have a PC with built-in ethernet support. When I installed lenny, I didn't have network connectivity (I didn't have my external networking hardware yet), so I just chose "no network" to make the installer stop pestering me about ethernet detection, updates and so on. The installation went fine. Now I have all my networking hardware in place, and it works (tested with another computer). I want to add network functionality to my lenny-PC, but I can't bring eth0 up with "ifup eth0": #ifup eth0 [...] SIOCSIFADDR: No such device eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device Bind socket to interface: No such device Failed to bring up eth0. # lspci -v sees the ethernet chip on the mainboard though. At least it tells me the precise model number. I can load the kernel module ("e1000") for this ethernet chip or not, the error message stays the same. It's not a DNS problem, ping (to a numerical address) fails. I tried googling, and there are plenty of occurences of this error message, but on every single google link the problem is due to virtualization (VMWare mostly). Whereas in my case there is no virtualization involved. It's root on the console in my case. So google found nothing helpful. How do I repeat the "install network" part of the installer? apt and qt4-X11 bugs in testing upgrade?
Greetings all Has anyone else come across this when upgrading testing using Update Manager? I'm using Gnome, but suspect that that doesn't matter too much given this is system-wide rather than DE-specific. Updates have been backed up for several days now due to some errors with apt and qt4-X11 bugs. apt safe-upgrade produces this error:
Retrieving bug reports... Done Parsing Found/Fixed information... Done critical bugs of apt (0.7.25.3 -> 0.8.0) #595691 - apt-get updates stalls forever if some files on mirror have 0 bytes (Fixed: apt/0.8.2) Merged with: 595812 grave bugs of apt (0.7.25.3 -> 0.8.0) #595428 - apt again lost support for Apt::GPGV::TrustedKeyring (Fixed: apt/0.8.2) grave bugs of system-config-printer-kde (4:4.4.5-1 -> 4:4.4.5-2) #596249 - system-config-printer-kde: can't load module in systemsettings Summary: apt(2 bugs), system-config-printer-kde(1 bug) Are you sure you want to install/upgrade the above packages? [Y/n/?/...]
I ran apt-get autoclean and a string of files were deleted, and then I ran aptitude safe-upgrade, and got the same output. But, using the Update Manager which works with synaptic, the grave bugs error is given as before, and when I enter 'n' to proceeding, the following output pops up:
W: Failed to fetch http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/pool/main/q/qt4-x11/libqtgui4_4.6.3-1+b1_i386.deb Hash Sum mismatch W: Failed to fetch http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/pool/main/q/qt4-x11/libqt4-xmlpatterns_4.6.3-1+b1_i386.deb Hash Sum mismatch
So in addition to the grave bugs in apt there are hash sum errors in qt4-X11 files? How do I sidestep these bugs and try to maintain an otherwise up-to-date system? Thanks for thoughts. I carefully reread the Debian debconf questions, and yet questions remain. In the dpkg-reconfigure section one question asks whether to hide local mail names. What shows up by default is my _local_ domain name. I gather this hiding refers to what appears in the message envelop, and so my intuition is that I would not want the local domain name there. I changed the default to just the domain name. For example, my current machine is teufel.historicalMaterialism.info, and I changed this to historicalMaterialism.info. Was this a mistake? Likewise, in an earlier question, I provide the system mail name. This is the domain name used to construct addresses. However, here again it the default entry was my _local_ domain name, but since I don't want to have my addresses show the local domain name, I changed the default local domain name to domain name. Again, I hope I did the right thing. On the page for the IP addresses for which exim4 should listed, there has traditionally appeared "127.0.0.1". With squeeze, however, it shows up as 127.0.0.1 ; ::1 without explanation. What is this added "::1" IP address? Or is it garbage that I should cut out? I don't know if any of this has any relation to the SMTP authentication issue. I understand that it is best to rely on TLS authentication, which I'll try in the future, but this issue has already interferred too much with important work, so must leave put off the big challenge of TLS for the next time and cross my fingers in the meantime. By default, exim4 employs TLS authentication, and so disables AUTH PLAIN and AUTH LOGIN. But it does not say what these entities are. Variables given values somewhere? Apparently not. So what are they? I can only guess the first has to do with plain text authentication with the SMTP mailserver, but what is the second? My fetchmail must logs into the mail server, but apparently not exim4. Now, from a reading of the documentation, it appears that for any host that is authenticated in plain text, I need to add the authenticating information into /etc/exim4/passwd.client. That much is clear, but then it says, "If you need to enable AUTH PLAIN or AUTH LOGIN...". Do I need to do so simply because I'm using plain text authentication? Do I need to do one or the other but not both? Since these entities were not defined, I don't know if I need to do it, and further, I'm not told what to do and where to do it. Someone suggested I needed to change value of DCconfig, and you suggested to change the value of dc_eximconfig_configtype, but neither variable, if that's what they are, appear in the configuration files for me to change. So I spent some time googling, and apparently the proper variable is AUTH_CLIENT_ALLOW_NOTLS_PASSWORDS. I had to google yet more to find that the value for this variable should be defined as " = true". But further googling provided only a hint that it should be placed at the top of the /etc/exim4/conf.d/main/03_exim4-config_tlsoptions file. So I tried it, and it didn't work. A messge from my new installation of squeeze on one machine (us...@historicalmaterialism.info) cannot be sent to the provider mail server and delivered from there to another machine which has the us...@historicalmaterialism.info address. Exim4 simply complains I can't route the outgoing message. At this point, I can only communicate from the first machine to the second by sending messages to it to a couple other domain names that the second machine happens to listen to. Re: authentication of multiple users for one mail server
Sorry to follow up on my own message, but did some more thinking about the problem. I'm asking Exim4 to send a message to another user having the same domain name. So does this mean exim searches for that user locally rather than ship the message off to my provider's mail server? In my previous message, I went though exim configuration, where at certain points I changed the local domain to the domain. Was this a mistake in one or two cases. A local domain in one or two configuration questions might tell exim that the message is not for a user on its own machine or network, and so it would be routed to my provider's mail server? Just a thought. Haines Brown -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? SSH & Rsync issues
In short: I have ssh set up on two systems so I can ssh from one to the other. My id_rsa.pub in ~/.ssh on my system is copied into ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on the remote system. I can ssh from local to remote with no issue and it's configured so authentication does not use passwords, but uses the RSA ID. This works perfectly. "ssh remote" gets me logged in immediately. I can rsync to the other machine. Using "rsync localfile tnet-web::threshNet-Public" works fine and the file is transferred. BUT when I try to use rsync over ssh, it will NOT work. A bit more of an explanation: The problem is that when I try rsync localfile - --rsh=ssh ... or rsync localfile - -e"ssh -l myname" ... (Yes, same stuff as before with the ...) How do you know you're missing fonts? I think /usr/share fonts/X11/misc, should include most othe ones non 100* and 75*, while most of the true type ones should be included under the defoma path. Could you run "xlsfonts" under X, and see if you're missing any? I've been testing Midori for a while, and it doesn't crash on me. It has some limitations though: 1.- Java doesn't work properly under firewall. Though the browser seems to work OK. Java works well outside a firewall, and if the sun version is used, then it gets nicely recognized by java.com test. Under firewall that fails. 2.- Under gmail the keyboard is not recognized by the TO, CC, and BCC fields. Rest of it works OK. 3.- The bank I use has a java applet for something they call "virtual keyboard", and the applet just doesn't work since the virtual keyboard never shows up. Other than these 3 issues, I really think Midori is in pretty good shape for those not using bunch of addons and plugins. Flash from adobe works just fine as well... It doesn't store cookies apparently, which slow down some things, but is way lighter than iceweasel/firefox... -- Javier. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Resent-Date: Tue, 7 Sep 2010 13:16:42 + (UTC) Resent-From: debian-user@lists.debian.org I'm just wondering, since firefox/iceweasel seems to be getting unusable. I have a 2.2GHz C2D box with an nvidia card at home, and a 3.0GHz C2D with a (lame) ATI card at work. I find that firefox (or xulrunner-stub) have memory leaks, and after a couple of days, it eats up a significant amount (10-30%) of memory. The work box has 3GB and the home box has 4GB. It also eats up a significant amount of CPU. This morning, after idling all weekend, iceweasel on my work system was chewing up between 70 and 100% of my cpus, and scrolling pages were hesitating for several seconds. So what do others use? --b Depending on what I want to do, I use Iceape or Iceweasel or konqueror or Opera. I also, sometimes, use epiphany. I had used a gnome browser, before Debian 5, but it appears to have disappeared with Debian 5, and I do not remember what it was named. I used to use Star Office 5.2, until Sun took it over and decided to destroy the functionality of Star Office. However, opera appears to have gone wonky, with the interface having become not user-friendly, and it appears to be unsupported, as no means for feedback about the deteriorations, appears to exist. But, the earlier version that I use, appears to be more secure and stable than the other browsers that I use. Iceape can be convenient, especially beinfg a suite, so it is easy to click on a mailto link, and open up the integrated email composer. But, iceape appears to be devoid of memory management, and it appears to have a viral use for memory, progressively increasing memory usage if the browser is left open, and it does not free up the memory that it has been using, when it is closed in an orderly manner (that is, on the odd occasion that it is deliberately closed, rather than the all too frequent crashes). Also, iceape does not have the facility for saving sessions, either deliberately, or, when the application crashes. Iceweasel saves sessions when it crashes, but it does not have the option of saving the last session and opening a new, separate session, so, when the application crashes, to run the application again, either it has to reload the crashed session, or, a new session, losing the crashed session. From what I understand, neither iceape nor iceweasel, nor their body of development (I understand that they are not developed by Mozilla), have a means for users to provide feedback, to get the software working in a way that benefits users. If iceape and iceweasel both were able to save sessions, and, to provide a means of splitting sessions into bookmark folders/sets, for each browser window open in a session, so that a user can, on opening a new session of the browser after a crash, and select options of a new, separate session, or restoring the complete old session (or, similarly, for a previous saved session that was not saved due to a crash), or, open in a browser window (the existing browser window or a new browser window), a single browser window (from a bookmakr set from a previous saveds session), it would be good. And, if someone could fix the memory issues, it would be good. When 2GB of RAM is insufficient to run Linux AND a web browser on top od Linux, suxh as iceape, then there is something dreadfully wrong with the memory management of the operating system and/or the web browser software. konqueror I use mainly for accessing my gmail accounts, but it allows access to only a single gmail account at a time. The problem with the Linux web browsers, is that, over time, the developers became so concerned with whistles and bells, and what the developers wanted to do with the applications, that the users were left behind, and the software became bloated, unstable, almost (if not) malicious, and, less and less user friendly, to the extent that it is a bad idea to update the software, as it is less and less usable. It is a bit like doing system upgrades to the latest version of a distribution - it is generally only a good idea, if a user likes playing roulette with the user's data and system - "let's gamble everything we have - let's do a system upgrade to the latest version, and find whether anything works, and whether we have any data left, afterward". Oh, I forgot, and was reminded today, when I tried to run Epiphany today, that it broke itself a while ago, and rendered itself unusable. Somehow, it deleted the URL text box, so the web browser is unusable, as no URL can be entered, and, no means of restoring the URL text box, is apparent. It is

With 4GB I am never really memory constrained, and everything works fine with 100+ tabs open continuously for days. It's hard to remember, but I don't think I really had too many problems when it was 1GB and something like 10-30 tabs... Pay attention to partitioning - if you let the installer run on automatic, it will wipe your disk; on the other hand, depending on how your current partitioning scheme is set up, you may be able to preserve your current OS and user data, and create new partitions for the new installation -- it's very dependent on how things are set up now. Read up on disk partitioning and the advanced installer options. 2. The other thing you have to pay attention to is your boot configuration. Read up on how Grub works. 3. If you're just doing this to play with testing, consider installing Xen, KVM, or virtualbox on your current system, then running Debian as a virtual machine. Re: iomega 2TB external USB drive
Just to update things--- Fired up second computer which is my test machine. Installed Ubuntu 10.04 and IOMEGA drive seen as a laptop icon immediately after turning it on. Was able to load/unload/move files with no problems. I then deleted partition, re formatted using fat. Unmounted drive and installed Fedora--- same results -- icon appears on desktop as soon as its powered up. Move/load/unload with no problems. Then moved to Debian Lenny --- had to mount the drive but icon did not appear on the desktop. Unmounted drive and ran the Ubuntu live disk and Iomega drive is seen on desktop shortly after powering up so I know it is not a faulty USB port and file transfer worked great. where did my ata drives go?
Last weekend I did a bunch of updates (to testing) and rebooted after almost six months. Somewhere in that process the ata drive got UUIDs assigned to the partitions and /etc/fstab was modified. Now they won't mount. I used to mount /dev/hdb1 and /dev/hdb5 but those don't exist anymore. Using tune2fs I can access them as /dev/sdc1 and /dev/sdc5. The UUIDs match what got written to /etc/fstab. I was able to assign labels to them using tune2fs but they still refuse to mount.
