Does your network card also require some alternative driver?

Upgrading from Lenny to Squeeze - Howto?

2010-07-21 Thread Paul Chany
Hi,

I decide today that I'm going to upgrade my Debian GNU/Linux Lenny to
Squeeze.

I try to search on debian.org site for an exact howto for this, but
find nothing. Mayhep I don't know how to search effectively?

well, not alternate driver, just nvidia, as in the NOT-FREE driver. I have
been using sgfxi to install my drivers, the last few upgrades. But there
hasn't been an upgrade in a while, at least I don't remember one messing up
my video setup.
But that is good to know, thanks! Do you run gnome or KDE? just curious, in
squeeze is KDE changed to KDE4 ? my wife still runs KDE3 and it would be a
real shock for her to have to switch to KDE4.. I run gnome myself.

The keyword you need to look for is "release notes". You will find this
page:

http://www.debian.org/releases/squeeze/releasenotes

Unfortunately, all of the links on this page lead to a 404 error page.
That means there is no official howto yet. As an approximation, you
might replace "squeeze" with "lenny" in the URL above to look for
lenny's release notes.

Upgrades to squeeze will have its own quirks, for example the
grub->grub2 migration. Maybe wiki.debian.org helps you with these in
case you are going to try it.

(BTW, I have upgraded one of my lenny machines a few weeks ago. Apart
from the grub upgrade, everything went smooth. It is just a little
annoying to keep up with the daily updates on this machine and
postgresql-9.0 isn't installable at the moment.)

Thanks!

Moreover, I decide to migrate my 32-bit Debian GNU/Linux Lenny
installation to 64-bit one (i386 to x86_64). I'm going to use this
howto: http://wiki.debian.org/Migrate32To64Bit

Just make sure you dd the entire drive over to a backup drive before you try to
migrate, unless it's trivial to just start over in the event of a major failure
(which can always happen.)

Interesting approach. I would probably just mkfs my swap partition and
debootstrap there. Then reboot into the previous swap partition, clean
the old root and swap back again. That way, you can keep /home, /etc
etc. intact, too.

An onboard sound chip does the same processing as a PCI sound card -
they are not like winmodems. True, a card can get you better sound, but
the modern onboard chips are darn good, unlike the ones from say, 6+
years ago which where pretty sad.

I was always a KDE user, through a few years of learning SUSE, and then when I
started Debian, 2 years ago. I had a problem with debian logging me out when
my wifes switched users, and i solved the problem by switching my desktop to
gnome, it no longer logged me out. I learned to like gnome, so I stick with
it! but she still uses KDE3. So I guess my choices are to get her to use
gnome now, or wait for the squeeze upgrade & make her use KDE4..

Debian includes Asterisk and YATE. That said, both (and FreeSwitch,
mentioned below) are an overkill for a simple home system. That is:
unless you want to add your own logic in at the price of extra
complexity.

You'll need a telephony adapter. A simple modem will not do, as there's
no standard interface that I'm aware of to use a modem as a voice
channel.

Zaptel/DAHDI provides interfaces for (mostly) some specialized hardware.
It is an out-of-tree kernel module, though included in Debian and
actively maintained.

(Disclaimer: I work for one company that makes such specialized hardware
and am involved in DAHDI and Asterisk)

Alternatively, if your PSTN is ISDN, you have some other options.
Or you could try switching to a whole VoIP system - replacing your
landline with a SIP "line". Though that adds yet anthoer point of
complexity and faliure.

There's an interesting project around Asterisk on a cheap Blackfin-based
embedded system. See http://www.rowetel.com/ucasterisk/ucasterisk.html
However I tend to avoid the Blackfin, due to the system lacking an MMU
and thus lacking long-term stability. But that's me.

Also, as mentioend by Alan, you can use an external SIP-connected
adapter. In that case I guess you could basically use just about any
embedded system.

FreeSwitch is a huge package of bundled software. Their tarball includes
everything from arp to whatnot. They seem to avoid system copies on
purpose. Good luck maintaining your system.

Re: cloning/saving system

2010-07-21 Thread B. Alexander
John,

For future reference, if you want to have a basic clone (not an exact copy)
of a machine, what I end up doing (which allows me to provision a machine in
about 15 minutes) uses the following procedure:

1. Create a package list on the old machine [1]

dpkg --get-selections | grep -v deinstall > pkglist.hostname

2. (Optional) Capture the drive layout [1]

  df > driveinfo.hostname
  df -h >> driveinfo.hostname
  fdisk -l >> driveinfo.hostname

3. Build the new machine with the netinst or businesscard cd. When asked
what type of system to build (package selection), uncheck all the boxes.

Reboot into your new system, copy pkglist.hostname from step 1 onto the
machine. Do the following:

  dpkg --set-selections < pkglist.hostname
  apt-get dselect-upgrade

This should give you a system with a nearly identical set of packages that
you can then tweak to your hearts content.

[1] You can actually back these files up and have a pool of different
"types" of machine. For instance, I have a workstation packagelist, a laptop
list, as well as lists for the various types of bastion hosts in my network,
including a wiki host (mediawiki), firewall, backup server, etc.

is this result of keylogger? am i hacked?

2010-07-21 Thread Sergey Spiridonov

Hi

I found yesterday that some files in /etc/ (/etc/shells and
/etc/default/default/schroot) are changed. They contain data which I was
typing on keyboard. Strange enough, this files are not overwritten, but
contain data they should contain + somewhere in the middle or at the
beginning of the file they contain something I typed in browser or in
command line in X window system.

This looks like that I am hacked and somebody try to get my passwords.
But may be there is another explanation, like broken package? Or can
somebody suggest, how can I check it? Reinstalling everything from
scratch is a lot of work...

System is squeeze, upgraded from lenny few weeks ago.

This should give you a system with a nearly identical set of packages that
you can then tweak to your hearts content.

I am not sure what you think about /home, but usually that is the more
important consideration for me. What I usually do is:
1. Make note of the UIDs & GIDs of the users (or the order in which they
were created). 'ls -nl /home' lists those.
2. Make a backup of /var as well to restore users' mail (in /var/mail)
and cronjobs (in /var/spool/cron/crontabs) and perhaps at jobs (in
/var/spool/cront).

Finally, backing up /etc and restoring it later prevents you from having
to do all the configurations again.

[1] You can actually back these files up and have a pool of different
"types" of machine. For instance, I have a workstation packagelist, a laptop
list, as well as lists for the various types of bastion hosts in my network,
including a wiki host (mediawiki), firewall, backup server, etc.

All good points.

Thanks.

One possible reason: your memory is corrupt. Run memtest86 to check
that.

Or choose something else. CLI? Fluxbox? Another DE? Trinity looks
promissing, but seems to be focussed on Ubuntu.

Now that poses a real dilemma. Which to abandon? KDE 3.5.x or Debian??

Who makes the SATA controller? Who makes the NIC? Chipset is standard,
and unless it's newer Intel it could have a completely different SATA
controller, even some of the newer Intel's throw in multiple controllers
(like JMicron and Intel together).

I did read the man page first. It said wipefs -n /dev/hda1 would do
everything except the write call. I ran it that way and the output was
much like the example you gave above with a message that two bits would
be removed. I assumed the two bits were the leftover signature and ran
wipefs again without the -n option.

Since then the computer was shutdown overnight. Reboot this morning
stopped in maintenance mode reporting a bad superblock in /dev/hda1. I
ran e2fsck -b /dev/hda1 where was the given alternate
superblock. The systen then rebooted normally.

Now the output of wipefs -n /dev/hda1 is:

offset type

0x438ext2 [filesystem]
 UUID: 2428f3c0-3098-448c-9484-587eb9f86e37

>
> Does "blkid /dev/hda1" still return the correct label, UUID and type?
Yes

/dev/hda1: UUID="2428f3c0-3098-448c-9484-587eb9f86e37" TYPE="ext2"

Installation of linux-base still fails as described previously and
dosfslabel /dev/hda1 still gives the error message posted prevously but
e2fsck /dev/hda1 says it is clean.

True, I neglected to mention this. I usually copy at least
/etc/apt/apt.conf, /etc/apt/sources.list (I use a universal one, so one size
fits all), and /etc/apt/sources.list.d over.

Good points. I was under the assumption that you would not be transferring
data over from the old to the new, so I didn't consider it. Of course, if
you are managing more than a few boxes, you also might want to consider a
configuration management tool like cfengine or puppet. Then you could
"script" all of your UIDs and GIDs as well as other configuration details.
For instance, I have a list of "essential" packages (essential for me) that
I install on every box. With cfengine, I can automagically install them as
well as edit/modify that list in one place.

Be careful with that. Especially if you are "cloning" a box that has been
around for a while. Carte blanche copying of /etc can lead to problems.
There is the problem of "etc drift," even with a fairly recently built box.

The keyword you need to look for is "release notes". You will find this
page:

http://www.debian.org/releases/squeeze/releasenotes

Unfortunately, all of the links on this page lead to a 404 error page.
That means there is no official howto yet. As an approximation, you
might replace "squeeze" with "lenny" in the URL above to look for
lenny's release notes.

Upgrades to squeeze will have its own quirks, for example the
grub->grub2 migration. Maybe wiki.debian.org helps you with these in
case you are going to try it.

Another quirk some may come across is the udev problem. Upgrading the
kernel before upgrading udev is essential. I expect this will be in the
release notes eventually. Many people have upgraded successfully
without knowing this, probably by upgrading both at once, but it is
worth knowing.

(The current squeeze udev requires a recent kernel version, version
2.6.26 is too old; see bug #571255.)

(BTW, I have upgraded one of my lenny machines a few weeks ago. Apart
from the grub upgrade, everything went smooth. It is just a little
annoying to keep up with the daily updates on this machine and
postgresql-9.0 isn't installable at the moment.)

I switched to XFCE, and I'm not looking back. The awful bloat and

Broken memory. Broken kernel (possibly but not necessarily the filesystem
driver). Hacked machine. Broken hardware.

For breakage of something as significant as /etc/shells, I'd prioritise
investigations in that order. Memtest86+ is a no-brainer, so let it
test your machine. Are you using a kernel that's got known issues with
whatever filesystem you are using for /etc? (Have you looked?)

What was the outcome of your investigation into the previous situation?

OK, that is all fine. You did not give the details about how you used
wipefs in your previous message, so I was getting worried that I might
have inadvertently caused you to wipe out the ext3 signature.

So we still have to find out why the postinst script runs dosfslabel on
an ext3 partition. Looking at the script, it seems to assemble a list of
filesystems and their types by analyzing /etc/fstab. I would therefore
like to see your output for:

  grep -E 'hda1|2428f3c0|vfat|msdos|ntfs' /etc/fstab

The output is:

/dev/hda1 /temp ext2rw,user,auto0 2
/dev/sdc/media/fuze vfatrw,user,noauto 0 0
/dev/sg1/usbdrive vfatrw,user,noauto 0 0
/dev/sda/media/usb1 vfatrw,user,noauto 0 0

I have copied everything on /dev/hda1 and /dev/hda5 on to a backup drive
and am considering a complete reformat of /dev/hda.

If you are so confident, why asking here?

1) Try memtest, it's a good idea.

2) Unplug you box from the net, to avoid more corruption

3) Check the syslog about disk errors

4) Check colocs/friends/family for any acces to your box

5) Tell us more about software installed, especially non Debian packaged
software.

6) If you are creationist, ask God ;)

Transfering iceweasel bookmark files to new system

2010-07-21 Thread Gary Roach

Hi;

I am replacing my oldest 1GHZ box with a new 2.65 x 4 GHz box. Both are
running Debian Squeeze. How do I transfer the iceweasel setup from the
one computer to the other and combine the bookmarks from the two units.
As an aside, is there any way to determine the purpose of all of the
files (and their location) that Debian installs with a package.

Nothing here to make the postinst script identify /dev/hda1 as a vfat
partition. (By the way, why do you have "etx2" instead of "ext3" as the
type?)

> I have copied everything on /dev/hda1 and /dev/hda5 on to a backup drive

I would think that it should be enough to wipe out and reconstruct the
one problematic partition.

You can try one more thing before that. Here is a list of all the
configuration files that the postinst script seems to take into account
when searching for known block devices (you can run the awk-cut
combination yourself to make sure that your version of linux-base uses
the same files):

$ awk '/my @config_files/,/^$/{if(/path =>.*\//) print $3}'
/var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-base.postinst | cut -d\' -f2
/etc/fstab
/boot/grub/menu.lst
/etc/default/grub
/etc/lilo.conf
/etc/silo.conf
/etc/quik.conf
/etc/yaboot.conf
/etc/elilo.conf
/etc/default/extlinux
/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules
/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume
/etc/uswsusp.conf
/etc/crypttab
/etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf
/etc/hdparm.conf

You can check if one of these files is present on your system and
mentions /dev/hda1 as type vfat. If that should turn out to be the case
then it might be enough to remove that reference to solve your problem.

Bookmarks->"Organize Bookmarks"

Google is how I learned to coy a places.sqlite file from one machine
to the other.

Reusing an in-place .mozilla/firefox tree when migrating from i386
to amd64 proved subtly problematic, though, in many ways.

A list of files that are installed from a given package can be seen with
dpkg -L

But this will not show files the program creates, in this case, that
includes the directory ~/.mozilla/ and everything under it.

If you are using pre-3.0 iceweasel (I have no idea what version is shipping
where), the main bookmarks file is bookmarks.html in
~/.mozilla/firefox//

Bookmarks are still written out to that file in 3.x and copying it
will work, but
you will lose additional information that is in the sqlite database
"places.sqlite",
so just copy it instead if you use 3.x

If you want, you can just copy the whole ~./mozilla/ dir to a new computer, and
you will get everything - bookmarks, cookies, saved forms, adblock lists, etc.
(this might not work if you moved to a different architecture, e.g. x86 to PPC,
I have never tried that - then again it might).

If you want to keep bookmarks in sync in general, take a look at Mozilla Weave
aka Firefox Sync.

Cheers,
Kelly Clowers

What kind of problems? I don't remember having problems... although maybe
that was the 2.x era, or maybe I just don't remember it.

'dd' works well and is on all/most *nix boxes. It takes lots of time though,
using one of the other imaging apps is much faster, if time is an issue.

There are numerous rescue cd's , most ,afaik, use 'partimage' .

Clonezilla, system rescue cd, etc.

'dd' is a part off coreutils, it is a 'required' package of Lenny.

You need to make sure the md5sum or sha1sum, etc. is correct, otherwise
your iso either:

1) did not download correctly
or
2) has been tampered with

The md5sum files usually have gpg signatures that you can also check.
You might need to do some research on gpg/pgp to understand how that
works.

I saw you mentioned live cds as well. Debian has the tools to build
your own live cd. The command line tool is live-helper, and there's a
GUI called live-magic.

I think this applies mainly for RAID configurations. If you only have

On default installations, Iceweasel plugins are installed in a common
path (such "/usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins") and not on each user's profile,
so AFAIK, moving/copying a profile (~./mozilla) should not interfere with
this.

Problems can arise when transferring profiles between different browser
releases, though.
