Squid isn't that hard to learn, just pay attention to the ACLs. This really goes for any proxy as poorly configured ACLs are very easily abused by lower forms of network life. Squid is my choice because it also allows me to use adzapper, a squid plugin that makes some real difference for dialup users: It replaces most ads with a 1x1 transparent gif at the proxy. > It would be nice if it cached page elements. That's just not possible, it's gotta be the whole object for it to compare against if you don't want to spend more time comparing than it would take to download the newer HTML. You'd save more by zapping ads anyway. -- Paul Johnson Email and IM (XMPP & Google Talk): [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? I've never had multiple sound devices. I've also never used iceweasel, xine, or skype. In vlc preferences you can change the output device. Under Alsa, there's a button "update list" presumably that if you have multiple devices would show them. I have only one so I only get 'default'. /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/README.Debian.gz notes that "ALSA supports up to eight sound cards" but further that "Unfortunatly, alsaconf can only detect one sound card and is generally a poorly written program. The other documentation in that directory gives some clues to working with multiple cards. With both cards connected at boot up (to elminiate a hot-plug issue) you should be able to have two sound card device sets if the modules for both devices are loaded. Further, you should be able to run amixer and aplay on both cards with the correct card parameter. Once this works, then its just configuring each application you run to work with the correct device. I've forgotton the earlier posts to this thread. I'm willing to brainstorm with you but I'll need to you restate what you've got connetected, what you want to do, and what works so far. It uses the nVidia GeForce7300GT, has 256 MB ram, no fan (huge heatsink), and does most things in hardware if you use the nVidia driver. I've had it for about 6 months so I don't know about longevity. Setup is simple: get xorg working with the nv driver, save the xorg.conf, install the nvidia kernel metapackage so that it will always match the installed kernel, and run the setup program. The nVidia driver gives a clearer picture for me in the following situation: watching a DVD that is normally 1024x768 but instead at full screen 1600x1200, deinterlace blend, using the vlc viewer. The nVidia driver handles the jpeg conversion in hardware allowing the main CPU to just idle. For longevity, I'd have to look to my older computers: my PII uses Trident VideoExcell AGP. Never tried to watch a movie with it and I've never tried googleearth (whatever that is). My other old computer (486) still uses its builtin S3 that isn't supported by Xorg. But it still works as well as it ever did. Whatever modern card you use, watch the temperature of it. If it is fanless, ensure that you have adequate case fans. As was pointed out, since you're running a *NIX already you don't have to use the hd-media method. However, if you want to, note that you are not looking for packages but installation media. They're available from the same place as the cd images. You may want to consider, though, that to use debootstrap you should have a spare partition so that you don't hose your old system. If the install should fail for some reason you want to have _something_ that works so you can troubleshoot. If you can't burn CDs, consider using the hd-media with a USB stick. This is what I did to install on my new box when my old one couldn't burn CDs. It works great. Doug. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Debian-Stable:Modules are not loaded randomly & hdparm:set-dma error
Dear Debian-Users! I have started this as a bug report (Bug#426432) but I think that it actually deserves a broader discussion. To begin by stating the problem: I am using Debian/stable with a 2.6.18-kernel (self-made) and the offical 2.6.18-4-686-kernel-image (i.e. you may assume that all relevant packages are up-to-date versions of this branch). During booting I get randomly error messages concerning the loading of modules, i.e. sometimes they are loaded without any error messages, sometimes not. In my opinion, this corresponds in some way to Bug#333522 (udev: modules randomly aren't loaded at startup). In addition to that, hdparm complains about setting dma on my disk (i.e. I get error messages of the kind "hda: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }"). To discuss things in more detail, let me start with the latter. Evidently, this might have a lot of reasons which are related to a faulty hardware. But up to now, I have checked my disk with smartctl, and I have changed the IDE cable as well as the kernel -with no effect. Though this leaves the possibility of a damaged IDE controller, I think that it has to do with the booting process. After all, I am able to set the same parameters (after booting) without any problems. It is also interesting to note that these problems just right occurred after I had to repair some disk problems (bad blocks, etc.) (successfully), which affected my old kernel (and modules of it respectively). The second problem (random problems concerning the loading of modules) has been from the very beginning of my Etch-installation. But they have gotten enhanced since the already-mentioned disk repair, i.e. they show up more often. Affected modules are ide_cd, uhci_hcd, usbcore, usb_storage, 8139too, lp (if I would try to related it to my disk repair, then it is probably more interesting where those modules actually reside on the disk). Worthwile to mention is that those errors do not occur if booting the offical kernel-image. The problem is not solved by installing or compiling a new kernel. So much for this. Hopefully things might get clearer by looking at the relevant logs. For this reason, I have provided this link [1], which is unfortunately limited to 100 downloads & 7 days (you may distribute the file as needed). Boot and boot.0 show the results of booting the SAME kernel (one time with errors and one time with no errors). kern.log and syslog contain the relevant entries from these processes. In this spirit With thanks for your efforts Yours Gernot --- [1] http://download.yousendit.com/6ABD24B71044D3EC http://download.yousendit.com/C81C745658EEC5C7 (mirror) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". File Notes
Hi, On my other platform (AmigaOS) I make a lot of use of file notes. Eg. if I download a file, I keep the original file name to store it, but the url is stored in the file note. So when I later want to know where that file came from, I just have to look at the file note. Another thing is when I have a lot of docs that I want to store in a particular order, I just number them and set the file note to the docs name. Now when I burn those files to a CD, the file notes are burned with them. But when I examine this CD in Linux using Konqueror or Bash, I don't see no file notes at all, although they are burned on CD with the files (AmigaOS displays them). Is there something like file notes for Linux, and if so, what command do I use to write/show them? Greetings, Manon.

Security question: are these vulnerabilities addressed?
Hello, The managers of a facility where we house some Debian servers recently ran a vunlerability scan against our up-to-date Sarge servers, and reported vulnerabilities in the version of OpenSSH we were running. I assume that these issues have been fixed or do not apply to Debian's OpenSSH, but I can't find any information to confirm this. Can anybody confirm that these are not issues in Debian Sarge? CVE-2005-2798OpenSSH GSSAPI Credential Disclosure CVE-2006-0225OpenSSH Local SCP Shell Command Execution They also reported this, which I couldn't really find any information about: CVE-2004-0230TCP Sequence Number Approximation Based Denial of Service Does anybody know if this is addressed in Sarge, or by the Linux kernel at all? There should not be problems using ide storage, but I don't think xfs has been exercised as completely (e.g., the really exceptional cases) on low-end hardware, so we don't really know if the people who say it works for them were just lucky. I've had to use xfs_repair a few times on SGI machines after a kernel oops or similar rare event, but only once on a PC. Personally one of my Sarge installs I'd kept on testing (Etch), and this before the Etch transition from Xfree86 to Xorg, and had few problems as it upgraded to Etch. Another Sarge install I upgraded to Etch (testing) , not long before Etch went stable. Etch had now moved on to using Xorg, rather than Xfree86, but this Sarge install upgraded to Etch like clockwork. The first Sarge install that I said was on testing, I put back on Etch in /etc/apt/sources.list just prior to Etch going stable, but have since put that back on testing (Lennie), and it's going well at the moment. I'm not saying that there havn't been problems here and there, but you deal with them as they arrive, and there's lots of help on the list. Currently Debian Lennie is running on one machine, and FC2 (which I'm posting from) on the other machine. btw. I've only tried doing an upgrade on Fedora once, and it didn't go too well. Now I install fresh when a new version comes out, and when I can find a bit of spare harddrive space. Etch: network won't work
I have cloned my installation of Etch onto another (ancient PII) system for backup purposes. When the network starts on the second system I get messages like this: SIOCSIFADDR: No such device .. and the network does not work (when I do 'ifconfig' I only get 'lo'). My network card is the same as on the original system - Realtek RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+. The same modules are installed on both machines: $ lsmod |grep 8139 8139cp 20736 0 8139too24192 0 mii 5376 2 8139cp,8139too If I boot from an old 2.4 kernel the network works OK (but certain other things don't)- so the hardware is OK. It reads /etc/apt/sources.list to decide where it should look for packages and upgrades. If you have a deb line like: deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ stable main then aptitude will always upgrade you to the current "stable" release, whatever it is; when a new release is put out, aptitude will see a whole bunch of new versions of packages and try to get you in sync with them. I had never heard of file notes; after some Googling, I found that the Amiga Filesystem has an 80 byte comment field, along with the name and other file information. I don't know of any native Linux FS that supports anything like that. As for the CD, it must be using Rock Ridge extensions with Amiga extensions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Ridge The Linux iso9960 (CD filesystem) driver supports Rock Ridge but it may not support Amiga extensions (I suspect it does not). And even if the driver does, the file management programs may not know to display the labels. Sorry I can't help more, maybe someone else can. In my experience (a recent netinstall of Debian "testing"): (1) The smarthost of my ISP would not accept my mail until I configured Exim4 to "hide local mail address", with "visible domain name for local users" as the domain of my ISP ("oplink.net"). (2) The address in the From: line of an outgoing message may be set to any address you wish, irrespective of the setting in Exim4; and this may be changed from one message to the next. Moreover, Mutt can be configured to automatically change both the address in the From: line and the signature. RLH -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". console keymap and console-setup
Hi, I'm a little confused as to how to set my console keymap. I've got a custom keymap that suits me, and running loadkeys /usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwerty/custom.kmap gets it installed and running just fine. I tried to modify /etc/init.d/keymap.sh to load it automatically, but this fails. I think it's because I've got console-setup / setupcon loaded. I looked through the readme for console-setup, but it's not clear to me if I need to put my custom keymap somewhere special, or if I can just point to it from a config file. Before "dvorak-classic" became a standard offering in Debian, the approach which I used was to execute the command: # install-keymap dvorak-classic.kmap.gz sometime during installation and configuration of the system -- usually at the first opportunity. Of course, if the keymapping file is on a floppy, a CD, or a flash memory stick, you need to specify the path to the keymapping file. It is not necessary to save a copy of custom.kmap.gz on your machine. However, to make it easy to locate the file the next time you need to configure another machine, you may wish to copy the file into: /usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwerty/ and then execute: # install-keymap /usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwerty/custom.kmap.gz As soon as you install the new keymap, it becomes: /etc/console/boottime.kmap.gz after first copying the old keymap (typically QWERTY) to: /etc/console/boottime.old.kmap.gz Thereafter, when you boot the system, your custom keymap should be in effect. No other configuration is required. See the man page for install-keymap. RLH -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
