You can try with "netstat" or with some network sniffing tools like
"ethereal" to look at what ports the traffic is directed...

You can try with one of the Cups queue manager like gtklpq (is
included in the gtklp package) to restart the print jobs.

I had that too once with a large batch of mail. I think the problem is
that some of the messages are still "in the system". E.g. they may
still be getting processed by procmail or spamassassin. You can try
using `ps' to see which processes are running. Maybe that helps.

Newbie with modem installation problems

2004-11-01 Thread Bruce Ward
Have been trying unsuccessfully to configure my ADSL connection with a
Speedtouch Home modem, connected through an SMC USB connector. It is all
working fime in Win 98 and some trial installations I did with red Hat and
Mandrake both detected and set up the modem correctly. I would rather use
Debian, but things just don't seem to work.

The Mandrake setup seems to be using the Pegasus and Red Hat installations
seemed to use the Pegasus USB drivers.

I have installed hotplug and the pegasus drivers. Hotplug seems to be
detecting the USB adapter OK and it lsusb shows an appropriate Ethernet
device. It does not seem to be associating this device with the Pegasus
drivers, and I don't have any eth0 device available.

Anyone give me some clues on how to go about this task?

IIRC there are two ways to use Speedtouch modem, via kernel driver or
using userspace driver. For the first way, you need a recent kernel,
2.6.5 and above should be enough, for the second way there's a package
on Debian, it's called "speedtouch". You probably need some other
libraries like PPPoATM or similar, you can find them all neatly
packaged.

With a 30 seconds google search i've found a couple of links:

http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/SpeedTouch/

http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/

http://cp4218.sourceforge.net/

Some are probably waiting for procmail, but from personal experience, at least
with using exim, some are probably queued at the mailer (fetchmail posts the
messages locally through you mailer)

If you are using exim, run mailq (as root) to see the list of pending
messages. Running /etc/init.d/exim4 restart will push it on its way to forward
the messages locally now and not wait for later (you can probably play with the
setting also concerning the amount of messages to handle immediately, but I
don't know how).

Also, I'm not sure how about the exact workings here, but if you are using
mailbox format, the mailbox requires locking in order to access. Don't know what
the interaction between the mailer and mutt is. Moving to maildirs of MH format
(if you are not using them already) may improve you performance.

Running runq (as superuser) forces exim to process all waiting mail right
then. Personally I ended up switching to Postfix, which doesn't do that.

2.6.8 kernel panic under k7 (but not 386)

2004-11-01 Thread Robert Coup
Hi All,
I have installed sarge onto a new AMD XP2500 system. By default, it
installed the 2.6.8-1-386 which works fine. I decided to upgrade to
2.6.8-1-k7 using the kernel-image package. That worked ok (apt-get
install kernel-image-2.6.8-1-k7; grub-install) until I rebooted. Then I
get the kernel panic shown at the end.

I get the same result with 2.6.7-1-k7 and 2.6.8-1-686 (but it works fine
with 386!).

Is it something dumb I am doing, or is there some difference (besides
CPU) between the 386 and k7 kernel builds that I should be aware of?

kernel error (2.6.8-1.k7), lspci, and dmesg (2.6.8-1-386) outputs are below.

ssh, su and root access

2004-11-01 Thread Luis Fernando Llana Díaz
Hi all,
I have a doubt. I ussually use ssh to access remote machines without sending any
password
(PasswordAuthentication no) and I store private keys with the help of ssh-agent.
This is valid also to login as another users (including root) in the local machine
(ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED]). With the help of ssh agent, on can open several root sessions
by only
asking one password: the one of my private key "id_rsa". In this way I void tping a
root password any time
I want to be root.
It is very easy for me to work this way, but I would to know if there could be aware
of any possible
security problems to do so. The only problem is that if I make ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED],
its gain root privileges
whitout asking any password.

Re: CUPS: jobs stop printing until reboot

2004-11-01 Thread Robert Coup

As mentioned in the subject line, it has happened a few times that at some point, even when the printer has been working, some small change in the parameters or some unknown factor will cause the printer to just stop accepting jobs, or else the system to stop passing them to the printer.

Deja Vu!
After rebooting, the printer cranked out pending jobs.
In another instance, today, jobs sent to the HP printer didn't print. I rebooted, and the copies printed ok.

I tried /etc/init.d/cupsys restart, but this didn't work.

I have the same problem with a Brother HL1430. Re-powering the printer
and restarting the printer via the CUPS web interface seems to
consistently solve the problem. I have a feeeling its something to do
with USB, but I haven't had time to look at it.

Good luck,
Rob :)

You are right to fear. Disable root logins via ssh, and use su

apache reload v. apache restart

2004-11-01 Thread Dave Ewart
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

System: Woody, fully up to date, runs Apache

Recently, after an 'apt-get upgrade', Apache has been dying when doing a
logrotate. I have identified the source of the problem -
'/etc/ini.d/apache reload' kills Apache.

So, I've changed it to '/etc/ini.d/apache restart' in the logrotate
scripts and this seems OK.

Anyone else seen this or have any thoughts as to what *really* caused
this to start happening? The logrotate and Apache configs have remained
unchanged for many months, and I suspect that one of the the packages
'apt-get upgraded' within the past week broke something.

Cheers,

Dave.

Not one that i'm aware of.

On the Debian alioth server there is a project page where is mentioned
that in future the maintainer could create such a package. In the
meantime you can install the binary package in /usr/local or in your
home dir and copy or link the plugins on your Firefox plugin
directory. I don't know if the player embed itself on Firefox, with
Mozilla seems easier to define new MIME type...

I can't say that this has happened to me really.
What do error logs give? Do you get any abnormal output from logrotate?
Or, does it just die because it *seems* it wants to.
I've had similar problems due to very stale processes (and even after
stop haven't killed and it's just doing lots of "killall -9"'s
that has put it all back to normal.

Nothing abnormal in the logs. There is the 'SIGUSR1 received. Doing
graceful restart' message when 'reload' is triggered, which appears
whether the process dies or not ...

I have the fstab entry marked as sync, rw.

I think it might be because reiserfs is a journaling filesystem. I know
I sometimes forget and remove my usbkey (which has FAT) without
unmounting, and don't see the problems you see. Even ext2 should be
fine.
Absolutely not. The point of keeping a journal is to preserve the
integrity of the filesystem even in an operation is unexpectedly
interrupted (whether by a crash or a power failure). This should
provide resilience to disconnection, too, but that doesn't mean
disconnection without warning would be safe: the integrity of the
filesystem is not the same as the integrity of every file within it.

If an ext2 filesystem is not cleanly unmounted then there is no
guarantee that it will be consistent or quickly repairable. It must
generally be fully scanned and repaired by e2fsck. If the filesystem is
not mounted with metadata ordering enabled, even that won't necessarily
work.

FAT isn't resilient to interruption either. FAT filesystem
implementations tend to be extremely conservative in ordering of
changes, which may make it relatively safe to disconnect a FAT
filesystem without unmounting it. However, there's no way of telling
whether a FAT filesystem has been cleanly umounted or not, so filesystem
damage can easily go unnoticed for some time, giving a false sense of
the safety of this practice.

True.

How does this change anything ? If you have one failed disk, and one
disk containing unknown errors (the same case as your RAID1 example
above), replacing the failed disk will lead to errors on the new disk.

Someone else has also looked into adding a p2p protocal to apt file
fetching, haven't watched it closely, nor am I a developer for it.

At one point I thought they even had an apt-pdtp in the works, but i
can't find it now.
Not trying to say apt-torrent isn't a worthwhile project, but as Mike
noted, bittorrent really isn't a good protocal for the number of
small files Debian has. It does work well though for CD images.

I have exactly the same problem. I have to restart manually every week.

I also noticed that, used manually, 'invoke-rc.d apache reload' failed
to restart (just like the weekly failure).
But '/etc/init.d/apache reload' worked. So I commented out the
invoke-rc.d part of /etc/logrotate.d/apache like this:

postrotate
   if [ -f /var/run/apache.pid ]; then \
#if [ -x /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d ]; then \
# invoke-rc.d apache reload > /dev/null; \
#else \
/etc/init.d/apache reload > /dev/null; \
#fi; \
   fi;

but that failed too.

I'll try with restart instead, and see how that fares.

Is the problem that must isn't updating it's index as the messages

is add a line to your .muttrc file. I use this to tell mutt to

root+evms

2004-11-01 Thread debian
Is there a quick how to available to get evms to load root
from an evms volume? I have searched high and low and
found none.

I have installed sarge 10/27/04 netinstall then
debootstrap to the array

I have an intel MB S875Wp1-E

/boot = /dev/md0
/ = /dev/evms/root
I have the array?s setup and debian is installed. I can
boot from an ide drive and chroot in all is well.

I have tried to use the sample initrd image that is on the
EVMS site. Edit grub and get to evms_activate, and get an
unknown file error becaust it does not recognize the sata
drives. I tried recompiling the kernel (I am using 2.6.9)
but can?t get the drivers right. I read the linuxrc
scripts that are installed to /usr/shar/initrd-tools, this
would insinuate that there is a way to config mkinitrd to
create an iniitrd image the debian way. But I get lost in
the process.

If anyone can provide pointers, I would be grateful!

Run konqueror goes to configuration, at the very end

Ans there is a button that saids scan for new plugins.

I thinks this is enough for konqueror to use you new

The problem might be in fetchmail. It has an option of limiting the number
of emails that it downloads on each connection. If this is set, you get
the behavior that you describe. The default according to man fetchmail is
no limit, but it might be set to 10 in your .fetchmailrc

1. why I can not hear any sound?.
2 How can I configure the sound card once the modules
are loaded?
3. There is a command to do this?, which one?

I already try sndconf

I will appreciate any help or point to a source.

If you don't have any error messages, like devices
unavailable or like
that, and your user is in the audio group, maybe you
only need to
raise the volume, so you can try it installing a mixer
package...
(this is only a guess)

To pass some configuring options to your soundcard
(what options
depends on your brand or model) IIRC you can add them
on your
/etc/modutils file.

Andrea

Thanks for the feedback, I already have a mixer, and it
does not work, I think may be I have the wrong driver
installed. Is posible load a driver even if this one is
not the correct?

I am trying other thing right now I did this
#cat file.wav >/dev/audio
Device or resource busy

any idea.

Thanks again.

The modules you have loaded are OSS (Open Sound

Try modprobe (the above to suit what you want)
Alternatively install alsaconf.

Thanks to both of you that follow this thread. The
solution was the one that Robin point.

Then I did:

#apt-cache search alsa
#apt-get alsa-common alsa-utils ...

once the alsa was installed I just run

#alsaconf
and follow the instructions
finally:
#cd /etc/init.d
#./alsa start

voila works.

Again thanks and regards.

you should filter the `dpkg -l` through grep to get installed packages:

$ dpkg -l | grep ^.i | wc

Are you using exim for your MTA? Try exim -bp to see if they're stuck
in the exim queue, and if so, increase the value of
smtp_accept_queue_per_connection in /etc/exim/exim.conf.

i have just got done installing sarge on a similar machine that is set
to boot off of the SAN.

the debian installer wanted to load the qlogicisp module for the qlogic
card, that failed. the instructions for the qlogic card said to modprobe
the qla2200 module, that module didnt exist. during the install i
switched over to another virtual console and modprobed the correct
module with: `modprobe qlogicfc` .

then the disk partition on the SAN was recognized and the install could
continue.

you need only to install the kernel-source.
there are other things that you need, such as: libncurses5-dev, debhelper,
kernel-package, dpkg-dev. some of these are only needed if you wish to
compile the kernel the "debian way". there are several how to's on the web,

If you use a precompiled kernel and want to compile software that needs
the headers of the kernel you use (e.g. a device driver), you install
the mathing headers package for your kernel. If you compile your own
kernel, you will have the headers you need in the kernel source dir.

The use of parity information in separate blocks for reads and writes
would just reduce the risk of that happening (prolonging the
inevitable?) as data information and parity information are
distributed across all disks in the array (RAID 1 won't contain parity
information, and is just a copy - data and all) . The disadvantage, of
course, with this setup, the controller design would be a lot more
complicated and subsequently would make the array reconstruction more
difficult unlike RAID 1 wherein it's guaranteed that you'd get a copy
of the other half of the mirror. Whether that remaining half of the
mirror already got checked for other errors that might've seeped in is
another matter absent of RAID 1 though as RAID 1 doesn't have a
provision for other information other than merely write data to the
other disk as well.

On an environment that's heavy on writes, RAID 5's overhead doesn't
really justify the costs. You'd be better off with RAID 1 for that.

aptitude: flags are 'state', 'action' and .... ?

2004-11-01 Thread Alexis Huxley
Hi, here's some results from aptitude's search command:

dione$ aptitude search \!unmatchable | egrep -v '^[piv] '
i A amd64-libs - ...
dione$

The 'testing' of three weeks ago produced no output with
this command; indeed I have been using it as a way to
check that all packages were in a good state.

But then 'testing' of one week ago starts producing this
output. Actually it did it for two other packages, both
from gcc 3.4 (which I removed in favour of only having 3.3
installed).

I looked in /usr/share/doc/aptitude/README and found that
it seems to skip the subject:

2.8. Values of the current state flag
2.9. Values of the action flag
2.10. Customizable colors in aptitude

Current state is column 1 (the 'i'), the action is in
column 2 (the ' '), but what is in column 3 (the 'A')?

Thanks!

Alexis

That's not what we're talking about here, though, if you follow the
thread. You expect some corruption when you yank out a disk without
proper unmounting, if you are unlucky. You don't expect a kernel panic
when you do. Well, at least I don't. When I'm talking about it would be
'fine' to yank out a usbkey formated in FAT or ext2 without unmounting it
first, I'm talking about the fact it won't cause a kernel panic (again,
the context would have been apparent if you followed the thread).

No, just the source. The header package is there so that you can
compile stuff that includes kernel headers without having the full
kernel source installed.

Sure, filter them before they get to Cyrus. If you want to do all
decision
making with Sieve, make sure the filters add headers you can test
against.
So if I use say procmail, how do I tell cyrus which folder to put it
in? What I want to do, is to sort all messages from known sources in to
some folders, ans then run spamc on the rest (I really don't want to
test all debian-user messages).
Use the -m option to cyrdeliver, but note that you need to have 'post'
access to the folder in question. If you don't it will silently deliver
to INBOX instead, if I remember correctly.

It's not you or your kernels fault. Due to a dependency loop, many of the
webmin module packages are missing from sarge. I have spoken to the

Re: NIS Problems

2004-11-01 Thread Ernest Johanson
Hendrika,

Not sure what you might have already tried but one place to check is 3
files in the /etc/ directory: yp.conf, yp.serv.conf and ypserv.securenets.
Your server will need to allow access from the client box, and know what
maps to serve. The client box will need to know the hostname or IP address
if it is not on the same network using broadcast mode. Check the
logs to see what errors there may be. There's docs for all of this in the package.

BTW, try configuring your email program so send text only messages and not
text with html. Will make your posts much easier to read in a text only
mail program.

Hope this is helpful.

xserver cannot start on iMac G3

2004-11-01 Thread dimoni
Hi there,
I have installed Debian Sarge on an iMac G3 (PowerPC 750, 350MHz) and
everything works fine but xserver, which cannot start.
The error message I get is the following:

(EE) R128(0): Cannot read V_BIOS (5)
(EE) R128(0): No DFP detected
Fatal server error:
Caught signal 7. Server aborting

I am fairly new to linux so I am not sure what the problem is. I guess
it is a miss-configuration on the Device section of the XF86Config-4
file.
The funny thing is that my first linux installation was Debian Woody
and got no problems at all. After a few weeks, I decided to upgrade to
Sarge, doing so by installing from scratch (instead of upgrading).
I am using an ATI Rage 128 PR/PRO AGP and I have specified both "ati"
and "r128" drivers which give the same errors.
BusID is "PCI:0:16:0" which I get from lspci output.
I have also tried to enable and disable "UseFBDev" but no changes. And
specifying CrtScreen, PanelSize... et cetera.
Also tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86, but the same errors are
shown.
By searching in the internet one realises that many "ati-r128-users"
have encountered similar problems, but after days of googling and not
getting anywhere I have decided to give up my search and ask for help
to this list. I hope someone can help or point me to another direction
if I am sending to the wrong list.

Thanks,
Eduard

[WORKAROUND] PCMCIA CardBus USB adapter

2004-11-01 Thread Tom Sahrendt
Hi there,

thanks to some off-list comments I was able to get the
CardBus adapter working.

It seems to be a (known?) bug in uhci-hdc.c and there
are some patches for different versions suggested on
the kernel mailing list, but none of them worked for
me. Anyway, when I booted with the noirqdebug option,
my system froze. I tried 2.6.7 and 2.4.2 kernels and
it made no change. When I turned off acpi, I was able
to get a "Sharing IRQ 11", but nonetheless after that
I got the "IRQ 11: nobody cared" message again.

Then, I downgraded to a 2.6.7 kernel image, booted
with inserted CardBus USB adapter and hotplug as well
as pcmcia enabled. I wait until the system is up, then
I do

/etc/init.d/pcmcia stop
/etc/init.d/hotplug stop

...takes some time...

/etc/init.d/pcmcia start
/etc/init.d/hotplug start

Works only in this order! I tried it several times, if
I start hotplug first, then pcmcia I get a "IRQ 11:
nobody cared" again.

It's a bit clumsy, but it works. I hope the next
kernel version fixes this.

cu,
Tom

Setting samplerate on /dev/dsp

2004-11-01 Thread ognjen Bezanov
Hi all, while not technically debian related it has something to do with
linux.

I want to capture data from my /dev/dsp device but the devices defaults
are 8bit mono sound, i want to know how to set the samplerate and
mono/stereo from the command line, a google search showed me only how to
do it in C++ (using ioctl). is it possible?

if not is there are program out there which would let me set the
samplerate before capture?

Thanks

Problem with QT-applications

2004-11-01 Thread Stephan Palmer
Hi Debian User Usegroup,

since one of my recent dist-upgrades, KDE / QT - applications crash right
away on my debian unstable system. If I change the LC_CTYPE-locale-value
from "en_US.ISO-8859-15" to "C", they start again normally. Does anyone of
you people have an idea whats causing this ?

Thank you very much,

What's with abiword fonts on sarge?

2004-11-01 Thread Hendrik Boom
Until recently, sarge's abiword wouldn't print on my hetworked Brother
`870N printer, connected through CUPS and ethernet. A recent upgrade
fixed that. But now it persists in printing everything in a too-large
type face, and all the italics are replaces by sans-serif straight up
and down font. On woody (wisely still resident on aother partition)
everything prints corrctly.

Note that large-cache controllers mitigate RAID-5's write overhead.

Over course, they cost more, blah blah, but when you are putting
together a few TB worth of SCSI disks, RAID-5 becomes a necessity
(unless you have the deepest of pockets), and so the cost of such
up-scale controllers isn't so horrible.

2004-11-01 Thread Icebiker
Another interesting question: if i install "kernel-source-2.6.8" and at
the same time "kernel-header-2.6.7", what will happen?
When I installed the 2.6 kernel on my sarge system (coz I didn't realize I
could have installed it from the CD, shoulda read the help), it was added to
the grub boot menu. I thought that was pretty darned intelligent.

i guess the idea is that the SAN is a single point of failure. no sense
complicating the server with another moving part.

ftp clients

2004-11-01 Thread Richard Lyons
Any recommendations for convenient ftp client for uploading web pages,
galleries, etc., and for updating the same?

I used to use gftp -- but it has become cranky (in Sarge, under icewm,
it is liable to crashes, cannot use bookmarks properly, etc.), and I
prefer not to have to load up all that gnomery if possible anyway.

I tried xftp, but it seems dysfunctional (I can log onto remote
computer, but cannot actually make anything appear in xftp's windows,
cannot cause any command to be executed).

I tried ncftp2, which is ok, as far as it goes.

I tried lftp and plain ftp, but uploading 40 files takes a while and a
good bit of concentration.

I'd really like a mc-like display, or a simple X-windows app. I just
went to examine mc, and found it has an ftp capability, but I don't
seem to be able to actually upload anything with it. I get a
permissions problem that was not present with ftp or lftp.

Does anybody here have a favorite they'd like to recommend?

TIA

exim and the other sendmail replacements (postfix, qmail... etc)
are written to function from the command line in the same manner as
sendmail itself. So (assuming your perl recipe is just a pipe to
sendmail) it should just work. I've found it much simpler at times to
use the perl Mail::Sender module instead.

But aren't single points of failure A Bad Thing?

Does the QLogic SAN driver support redundancy (2 cards, both doing
the same thing, so that if one card dies, the box keeps working)?

> no sense
> complicating the server with another moving part.

A simple "little" 80GB IDE hard drive doesn't seem that complicated
(unless you have a dozen boxes, which is a good reason for wanting
to boot off the SAN).

Booting off an IDE drive is about as simple/known/robust as one
could imagine. No need for special drivers, work-arounds, etc.

Maybe it's just me...

Package ncftp is a newer version than ncftp2.

if either A or B fails your system fails is a bad thing. (the system
depending on two hard drives)

if A fails your system fails is not as bad. (the system depending on one
hard drive)

yes, some cards do (i believe). but this one does not.

the base OS doesnt need much space, so it can live on the SAN with the
data. thus the local disk is unnecessary.

Response for Duncan Lithgow about CAD

2004-11-01 Thread Jim Hall
Duncan Lithgow said in another thread that "I will never get rid of
windoze totally because I need to run AutoCAD sometimes."
I hate to see anyone suffer needlessly. Buy either Crossover or
LinuxCAD. Crossover is the longer term solution for any other Windoze
programs you may be forced to use in the future. It's based on the Wine
project < http://winehq.org/ >. LinuxCAD is a direct replacement for
AutoCAD: if you know one, you know the other.

Yes, I know both these products are commercial. That sets some people's
teeth on edge. But, for some programs, this is the only way to get them
into the hands of users. Development and support just costs too much for
some kinds of projects. Also, from what I've seen, Linux commercial
software usually costs no more than comparable Windoze products, and
often less. This CAD program is MUCH less than AutoCAD!

Crossover

LinuxCAD

Take either one or both, and you'll feel better in the morning.

different networks, same computer (map mapping ?)

2004-11-01 Thread H. S.
I would like a laptop to work in two kinds of networks automatically if
possible. At home, I am running a DHCP server and if the laptop is
connected to my switch(CAT5 cable to eth0) and booted up, it looks for
and gets an IP address (it is running a dhcp client). Now when that
laptop is taken to the university, the user needs to change the
/etc/network/interfaces file to give the machine a static address. I am
looking for a way that this choice between dhcp/static happens
automatically.

I have been reading manpages of interfaces and learned we can map a
physical device as logical devices and make it work in different modes.
I am looking for examples where this is already done, the documentation
in man interfaces is, well, not very clear about all the nuts and
bolts, or so I believe. All help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Apache 1.3.31 mod_include Vuln?

2004-11-01 Thread Michael Bellears
Just wondering if the following vuln has been confirmed to affect Apache
1.3.31-6(Testing)?

http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2004-0940

http://securitytracker.com/alerts/2004/Oct/1011783.html

Can't see any mention of it on http://www.debian.org/security/

At this point i found what the problem was, but now I have encountered
another one. In this new case, seems to me that the problem is due to my
exim being configured as smarthost; I have to figure out how to
rewrite the headers of the message so that when the form sends the
variables to the script, it is accepted by the smtp server. In this
case, it is answering that

"host smtp-server.cfl.rr.com [65.32.5.130]: 553 5.1.8 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>...
+Domain of sender address [EMAIL PROTECTED] does not exist"

I think that I read in the info exim files that if the form initiates
from a virtual host then exim rewrites automatically, not sure, the
info files are long, and I am falling sleep here. If anybody knows how
to fix it and can save me hours of browsing the documentation will be
great.

A couple of weeks ago I had success converting the rpm with alien. At the
time, the resulting deb required two packages that were not in Sid but
were in experimental. I think these packages were:

libatk1.0-0 and libpango1.0-0

Nick.

Jeez. Save yourself that pain and just run aptitude, move the cursor to
"--- Not Installed Packages" and type '_' followed by 'g'.

I have a similar setup. I used ifplugd and guessnet. You have to modify
slightly /etc/network/interfaces. I supposed you don't need ifplugd, but it
is nice to be able to start up my laptop quickly without having any type of
network cable installed. Once you plug a cable in, ifplugd will configure
things for you.

Anyway, here are some snippets from my /etc/network/interfaces file:

# The primary network interface
# turn off since ifplugd is controlling things
#auto eth0

mapping eth0
script /usr/sbin/guessnet-ifupdown
map default: none
map timeout: 3
map verbose: true

iface work inet dhcp
test-peer address x.x.x.x MAC.address

iface home inet static
address 192.168.1.5
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.1
test-peer address 192.168.1.1 MAC.address

Note:

x.x.x.x is the IP address of a known computer on the network that should be
always there. The MAC.address is the hardware MAC address of this computer.

Pretty simple setup but works nicely.

Apache 1.3 on woody largefile problems

2004-11-01 Thread Adam Morley
Hi,

I have a system running Debian Woody 3.0r2 (have yet to bump to r3) with the latest

Short version: files >2GB don't get seen as >2GB, and it looks like largefile support

I create a file in /var/tmp >2GB (2GB + 3 kbytes):

MD software raid & multiple disk failure recovery help script

2004-11-01 Thread Mike Fedyk
Hi all,
I just wrote a script runs a brute force attack against a raid5 array
that has had multiple drives removed from an active array.

Yep, that's what I did, and the last resort was (from everywhere I could
find with google) was to use the old mkraid tool if I had a raidtab. I
have been using mdadm for a while now and was not looking forward to
working with the old tools, and modifying the array manually.

This script will take two arguments, the md device, and then a space
separated list of devices that are within the array.

Then it will create a new array (make sure you have one missing drive so
that it doesn't try syncing the disks) with the old disks. What you're
trying to do is find the original disk order, and if you fail multiple
disks, that ordering info is lost AFAIK.

Here[1] are the combinations that would be tried for a four drive raid
array. That's 24 combinations for 4 drives, 120 for 5 drives and a
whopping 720 for 6 drives. I have four drives, but even running the
commands and keeping track of the combinations on paper 24 times is enough.

I developed against ash since I need to be able to run this under
busybox. It just outputs combinations like[1], and doesn't call any
commands in this version. I just need some review of the code for logic
errors and bashisms (which is what I usually write shell scripts against).

I have attached, and pasted[2] the code.
Thanks,
Mike

Thunderbird does not properly handle http & https links. What to do?

Three solutions are described.

Firefox/Thunderbird integration:
Gnome users can use the default application configuration
tool included in gnome-control-center. Set the default
Mail-Reader Command to: mozilla-thunderbird -compose %s

It continues with more options, but this works for me. I use
gnome-control-center to manage settings, but I don't use gnome! I use
openbox for a window manager and fspanel for a panel which makes for a
very lightweight desktop and fast performance on this old P3 128mb box.

I normally use KDE or IceWM. I tried using "component chooser" for KDE,
but it works for KDE applications only, i.e. if I clicked an email link
from Firefox/Mozilla it wouldn't open Thunderbird for me, whereas
clicking an email link from Konqueror opens Thunderbird.

I also tried using similar options in Firefox to the ones used for
Thunderbird. It does not open thunderbird but gives me an error message:

Error launching browser window: TypeError:

Have you tried LinuxCAD? It seems a few years back it was just a scam,
has that changed ?

Wine won't run AutoCad in a production environment. Varicad is a decent
CAD program for Linux but it is for mechanical. If you need to run a
decent cad program use a dual G5 with the cad app available for it,
can't remember the name, but it blows autocad/windows away.

Re: different networks, same computer (map mapping ?)

2004-11-01 Thread H. S.
Apparently, _John Schmidt_, on 01/11/04 19:48,typed:
I have a similar setup. I used ifplugd and guessnet. You have to modify
slightly /etc/network/interfaces. I supposed you don't need ifplugd, but it
is nice to be able to start up my laptop quickly without having any type of
network cable installed. Once you plug a cable in, ifplugd will configure
things for you.

Anyway, here are some snippets from my /etc/network/interfaces file:
# The primary network interface
# turn off since ifplugd is controlling things
#auto eth0
mapping eth0
script /usr/sbin/guessnet-ifupdown
map default: none
map timeout: 3
map verbose: true
iface work inet dhcp
test-peer address x.x.x.x MAC.address
iface home inet static
address 192.168.1.5
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.1
test-peer address 192.168.1.1 MAC.address
Note:

x.x.x.x is the IP address of a known computer on the network that should be
always there. The MAC.address is the hardware MAC address of this computer.

Pretty simple setup but works nicely.
John

I installed ifplugd and guess-net. My ifplugd config is:
#--
{~}> cat /etc/default/ifplugd
# This file may be changed either manually or by running dpkg-reconfigure.
#
# N.B.: dpkg-reconfigure deletes everything from this file except for
# the assignments to variables INTERFACES, HOTPLUG_INTERFACES, ARGS and
# SUSPEND_ACTION. When run it uses the current values of those variables
# as their default values, thus preserving the administrator's changes.
INTERFACES="eth0"
HOTPLUG_INTERFACES=""
ARGS="-q -f -u0 -d5 -w -I"
SUSPEND_ACTION="stop"
#--
and my interfaces file is:
#--
{~}> cat /etc/network/interfaces
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
#mapping
mapping eth0
script /usr/sbin/guessnet-ifupdown
# map home work
map default: none
map timeout: 3
map verbose: true
#home network
iface home inet dhcp
test-peer address 192.168.0.2 source 192.168.0.15
#university network
iface work inet static
address X.Y.Z.A
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway X.Y.Z.1
network X.Y.Z.0
broadcast X.Y.Z.255
dns-nameservers a.b.c.d e.f.g.h
test-peer address a.b.c.d source X.Y.Z.A
#--
This setup doesn't work. The boot process hangs just after the "starting
MTA: Exim" message. But I choose the interfaces file so that eth0 is
configured at dhcp in my home, the boot process works and a few messages
after "starting MTA: exim" it also gives the message "network
interfaces plugging demon".

Could you give more information about your interfaces file and ifplugd
config.? I seem to be missing something very basic here.

thanks,
->HS

The thing for me is, that I have an installed system
on an SATA - Disk, which works quite well.
Now I want to use this server as a front end to the
Storage...

By now, I found out, that I can not compile qla2x00
(qla2300 for me) on a 2.6.8 - smp - Kernel. I had to go back to 2.4.27
- smp, and now I can compile the drivers...

The problem is, that the debian package only contais
source for an old driver and the rpm from qlogic did not like my debian
:-( But as long as there is alien, it does not really hurt ;-)

Thanks to matt for the hints...

Bye,
Andy

Re: MD software raid & multiple disk failure recovery help script

2004-11-01 Thread Mike Fedyk
Mike Fedyk wrote:
Then it will create a new array (make sure you have one missing drive
so that it doesn't try syncing the disks) with the old disks. What
you're trying to do is find the original disk order, and if you fail
multiple disks, that ordering info is lost AFAIK.

Here[1] are the combinations that would be tried for a four drive raid
array. That's 24 combinations for 4 drives, 120 for 5 drives and a
whopping 720 for 6 drives. I have four drives, but even running the
commands and keeping track of the combinations on paper 24 times is
enough.
I have an update that enforces the "missing" to avoid array
reconstruction (which would destroy the data on an array if
reconstructed improperly).

This version includes code to create the array, and use tune2fs, mount,
and e2fsck for array construction verification. Oh, there is a hard
coded setting of 256K sized chunks, which is very important in recovery.

With all of these combinations, I still haven't found one that passes
the tests. Anyone have any ideas?
