After potato install, why does 1st dselect install so much?
AFTER SEARCHING through about 18 months of debian-user archives and not finding a related thread, here's a question that's been on my mind looking for a high-level answer. Just now I did a fresh install of potato (2.2r2) from CD and chose these tasks: [*] Dialup Dialup utilities [*] Laptop A selection of tools for laptop users [*] Newbie Help New user documentation [*] Python Python script development environment [*] Python Bundle Full distribution of Python [*] Python Dev Full Python development environment [*] Python Web Python web application development environm [*] SgmlSGML and XML authoring and editing [*] Sgml DevSGML and XML development environment Everything seemed OK, judging from having installed slink/potato about a dozen times before (sometimes just for practice). After a reboot, I launched dselect and: - [S]elect - upon entering Select screen, pressed ENTER ("- All packages -") - [I]nstall It said: ... 65 newly installed; 89.8MB will be used ... I don't get it. Why does dselect "want" to install so much, whereas the operating-system install (from Rescue Disk boot to the "Have Fun!" message) did not? The main installation routine didn't install such basic packages as ispell and finger, but somehow those two (and 63 others) were in dselect's "queue" of packages to be installed. Running dselect a second time doesn't install or delete anything. Is "flushing" dselect a normal part of installing Debian? If so, is there a design reason why it's meant to be that way, or did it evolve (in the negative sense of "evolve"), sort of like some packages use "Debian Configuration" and others don't? -- Rob Cymbala2nd email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] GnuPG/PGP: www.Lafn.org/~cymbala/pubkey.html

Dselect installs all standard priority packages by default. The task system does not (in the version of debian you use; this was an oversight, and it does/will in all later versions). > If so, is there a design reason why it's meant to be that way, or did > it evolve (in the negative sense of "evolve"), sort of like some > packages use "Debian Configuration" and others don't? That is not an evolution, that is the fact that potato shipped with us 50% through the transition to debconf (and woody will probably ship with us 90% through). -- see shy jo

sendmail statistics(sendmail.st) not working ?
hi ive been playin with mrtg this weekend and found a config where i can graph incoming/outgoing mails but it depends on a sendmail status file, which none of my systems seem to generate except 1(*). i have the StatusFile set in the cf file, i even tried setting it in the mc file and they still are not generated, there is plenty of host status stuff though. i can't find out by checking on the www if there is something else that has to be turned on to trigger sendmail stats generation other then turning it on either in the mc or in the cf. i have checked 5 different systems each using slightly different configurations, only 1 seems to generate a sendmail stats file, it's a debian 2.1 machine running a self compiled copy of sendmail and a raly old sendmail.cf file(i have no .mc for it so i can't really use it elsewhere). - 2 of the systems are running a heavily modified sendmail 8.11.3 (compiled from unstable) on debian 2.2 - no status files - 1 of them is running a heavily modified sendmail 8.9.3(from potato) on debian 2.2 - no status files - 1 of them is running a slightly modified sendmail 8.9.3(from potato) on debian 2.2 - no status files all of the systems have sendmail running as user mail(via RunAsUser), and permissions seem to be ok in /var/lib/sendmail (owned by mail.mail) logs dont show anything ..any ideas ? everything else works great.. never had to bother with sendmail.st until tonight.. thanks nate

Setting up debian
Under debian potato 2.2r2 I've installed the Gimp and sane together with xscanimage and the sane plugins for gimp. Now I'm trying to set my epson 1240U usb scanner. I've followed the instruction given in linux-usb.org. step by step 1) I've issued mknod /usb/dev/scanner0 c 180 48 2) insmod usbcore, uhci (I've also a usb-uhci??? what's for?), scanner giving as options the product and vendor I can see listing /proc/bus/usb devices 3) starting sane it complains "no device etc." and stops loading. I've tried to modify scanner0 into simply scanner, then the same moving both files under /dev (I saw that usbmouse is under /dev not /dev/usb). No success. Could someone please help me set my usb scanner under potato?

Begin Original Message i have a geforce2 mx card, an updated sid system w/ xfree4.0.3. i've installed the binary drivers from nvidia as specified by the faq. works great. but after some use in X, it will blank the screen (as if the keyboard was inactive for a while). when i try to escape (by pressing 'shift') the screen will return. but immediately blank again. it does so in a continuous manner. i have seen this problem w/ the drivers in the stock xfree86. and console doesn't have this problem. in /var/log/XFree.0.log (or something like that) i see these two lines after one of these blank sessions when i switch to console to check the logs: (WW) Cannot open APM (II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1152x864" i think the nvidia drivers is turning off the video card b/c its getting too hot. hence the apm warning. i've tried this with another monitor with the same problem. any clue? thanks. herbert End Original Message Hi ! I use a geforce too, with X4.0.2 and I do not have this problem. ( I have the same APM warning, best guess: disregard.) Re: using cdrecord to record regular file, but can not mount
Hi, you mean that you did not even made a filesystem? You should be able to read the information back with: dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/tmp/whateveriwrotetocd If you want to copy some files (or directory's) to a cd, you have to use mkisofs. See 'man cdrecord' for an example how to do this with pipes (that means that you do not have to make an iso file on your harddisk first). Then you should be able to mount your cd as usual. Hope it helps. MBR problem with 486
Hi all, I've installed Debian 2.2 on an old 486 yesterday (which caused some minor problems). Everything turned out fine in the end, except the boot process. It's a Linux-only system, I've partitioned the disk as follows: /dev/hda1: /boot 5MB /dev/hda5: swap 50MB /dev/hda6: / the rest Lilo is used for booting, I choose the second option in the installation process (using the /boot partition). Also, the installation process installed a new MBR. Now, when I reboot, I only see MBR repeated on my screen several times, nothing else happens. I have to boot to Linux using a boot disk, which takes an awfully long time ;-) What could cause this? -- Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny.

How do RFPs work?
Hello! I have filed an RFP yesterday with reportbug, and when it asked if I wanted the bug to be sent to the maintainer only, I said yes (because that's the default). Now... I know the bug is in the BTS, but how does it work from now on? It's not automatically sent to debian-devel, I guess? How do developers know about new requests like that? Thanks, J.

It's called babytouch and you can get it at http://members.accesstoledo.com/patterson. It's only available as source so you'll need C and SDL development stuff to compile it. Runs fullscreen! Problems with pop3
Hi All, I am running Woody as my personal machine. This machine is running fetchmail to get my wifes email from our ISP. She then reads her mail on a Windoze box using Outlook Express by retreiving it from my machine via pop3. Ever since last week or so, when I did an apt-get -f dist-upgrade, she has been unable to get her mail from my machine. This seems to be the relevant part of auth.log, does anyone have a clue what is wrong? What do you mean by "operating-system install"? If you mean the part of the installation prior to the reboot, well you wouldn't expect that part to install much. 89.8MB, let's see, what's that in floppies, sixty? No, that part of the installation only includes the packages that are needed to install more packages, i.e. it's a classic bootstrap process. Looking back at the size of dselect's appetite in the past, the figures I have are: bo35MB hamm 45MB slink 37MB potato installed August 2000 with May's boot disks, dselect upgraded 25 and installed 91 packages. > Running dselect a second time doesn't install or delete anything. Yes, unless you know and specify exactly what you want to apt-get (which also only satisfies Depends, and does not bother with Recommends or Suggests). Dselect will give you everything that's Required, Important or Standard, IIRC. Hi, While I wasn't too keen on the idea, I did try it but to no avail... My thinking was that it had something to do with Kerberos. This will give you an hour of difference at boot time If you're running adjtime, you need to delete /etc/adjtime or the clock might start gradually running faster or slower because it thinks it lost/gained an hour. Re: Pascal
I feel your pain. Not only is is not open source, it's *quite* expensive, much more so than Windows Delphi. We're talking $1K here, for the *less* expensive version. Also, there's apparently no driver for Postgresql, so there's no connection to a full-featured free database. Needless to say, Debian is not supported either. (Am I the only one who finds it offensive that despite the above, they prominently link to www.fsf.org from the Kylix page?) I can't imagine who Borland is trying to target here. Progeny Debian 1.0 released
Media Contact: Aaron Stenhoff Progeny Linux Systems, Inc. (317) 833-0313 (ext. 137) [EMAIL PROTECTED] PROGENY LINUX SYSTEMS ROLLS OUT PROGENY DEBIAN Enhanced Version of Debian Available for Download INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana - April 9, 2001 - Progeny Linux Systems, Inc. announces the release of the first edition of Progeny Debian. The download edition is available now at www.progeny.com/download. The boxed set will be available on April 23rd. Progeny Debian was developed in cooperation with Debian GNU/Linux, founded by Ian Murdock, President and CEO of Progeny Linux Systems. The company includes a number of leading Debian developers who are led by CTO John H. Hartman, a prominent expert in operating systems. Progeny Debian provides an enhanced feature set that includes easy graphical installation, hardware detection support, and improved configuration and management tools. Other additions include improved USB support and an auto-install feature for streamlining multiple installations. Most of Progeny's enhancements have already been contributed back to the Debian development tree, and the remainder will be as time permits. All of the software in Progeny Debian is licensed under terms compatible with the Debian Free Software Guidelines[1], including all changes, updates, and new packages Progeny has created. The boxed set will offer a 90-day subscription to the Progeny Service Network and 30 days of telephone installation support. Progeny Service Network provides timely, secured software updates seamlessly to corporate customers. The service includes free e-mail assistance and various support levels depending on the customers' needs. In addition to providing Progeny Debian, the archive.progeny.com site hosts a full mirror of the Debian package archives. We welcome downloads of Debian and Progeny Debian alike. Progeny Linux Systems would like to extend its thanks to the Debian user and development community; their contributions and hard work over the past several years have made Debian GNU/Linux an outstanding foundation upon which to base a commercial product. Progeny looks forward to continued collaboration with the Free Software community and the Debian Project. [1] Netscape Communicator 4.76 is the only exception to this rule; it is included due to its continuing popularity and inertia, with freely-licensed graphical web browsers (such as Mozilla and Konqueror, both available with Progeny Debian) only recently able to compete favorably in terms of stability and feature set. -- Branden Robinson | GPG signed/encrypted mail welcome [EMAIL PROTECTED] | 1024D/9C0BCBFB Senior Software Developer | D5F6 D4C9 E25B 3D37 068C Progeny Linux Systems | 72E8 0F42 191A 9C0B CBFB
nis login problems
Hi All, I'm trying to implement NIS and I'm stuck. I've set up the server on our RedHat machine and the client on my Debian box. When I run ypcat I get the following: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ypcat passwd andrew.dixon:$1$h7CPc4pd$WilaTSJaZOPgHfvhqwVnJ.:11424:11424::/home/andrew.dixon:/bin/bash ming.gao:$1$eYE/v93N$X8a4bjprJCPYvI6/efDGB/:11423:11423::/home/ming.gao:/bin/bash mike.wilson:$1$KXvcabWc$SHuCdrhC00VP4yAbTzYW..:11422:11422::/home/mike.wilson:/bin/bash brad.kemp:$1$aSXA.ncX$93r3dg1PQ9azJtady8iAq/:502:502::/home/brad.kemp:/bin/bash and when I run $ypmatch andrew.dixon passwd: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ypmatch andrew.dixon passwd andrew.dixon:$1$h7CPc4pd$WilaTSJaZOPgHfvhqwVnJ.:11424:11424::/home/andrew.dixon:/bin/bash The problem is that when I try to login with the username andrew.dixon on my Debian box the login fails. It does fail differently then if I just give it a garbage login so I do believe that it is accessing the maps in some way. The RedHat server is also running shadow password which I know can cause trouble for NIS. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Andy

Here is another option: find another computer (perhaps a friend's) with some free space on it and put the drive from the borked system in it. Then boot that machine with a rescue disk. You can mount the borked disk and the disks with extra space, back up the first to the second as described, reinstall, and restore. If you stick $5 a week in a book somewhere, you could have a CD-RW by Christmas. It's worth it, just so you don't have to go through this PITA again. > And I will do just that when I have a computer that dosn't cost less than the > drive. I recently bought a monitor stand for my computer, which is a few years old, to save desk space. Later I had a friend tell me that he had sold his old computer, the same model as mine, for the same price I paid for my monitor stand. I'll not take the thing back, though. If you get a nice DAT drive, you can transfer it to your shiny new machine when you get one. An old computer doesn't have to have all old parts. I hope that helps. If you have trouble finding another machine, offer a six-pack of beer. Rob -- If you don't care where you are, then you ain't lost.

I've seen folks deride the use of alias rm 'rm -i' because it encourages sloppy thinking, and that one time when you're logged in from somewhere unusual and you don't actually have that alias available POOF you'll zap more than you expect (because there'll actually be no '-i' supplied to the command)... If that is the case, then why not mv /bin/rm /bin/e-rad-i-cate since 'rm' is sooo easy to type, sooo easy to run, sooo easy to zap files unintentionally? a longer name would make such mistakes harder to make. :) -- does a brain cell think? To make it more concrete here's an example: I compile the kernel with 'make-kpkg --revision=Custom.2 kernel_image' and dpkg -i the resulting deb, as recommended in the debian FAQ. Now, when i start dselect, kernel-image-2.4 with installed version Custom.2 has no available version (since dselect doesn't know about the directory it lives in) and is therefore in section Obsolete/local. This is what I don't like. Thanks for comments, M. -- I did not vote for the Austrian government

C-A-Fx not working in XFree86 4.0.2?
It seems to me that I saw something about this a few months ago, but 30 mins+ with Google and the Debian mailing list archive search engine netted me zippo :(. I upgraded to the latest testing version a few days ago, and ever since I did I can't use C-A-F{1,2,3...} to switch back to my text console. The key sequence is simply ignored as if I'd done nothing at all. Prior to this I was using a testing version from about 4-5 weeks ago, with X 4.0.1 (IIRC). I switched window managers (from fvwm2 beta to sawfish), but the problem persists, so I it's not a WM taking those keys (is that even possible, or does X intercept them too early?) I haven't changed my XF86Config-4 file (I have nothing in my ServerFlags section). I haven't changed anything in any other setup that I can think of. I _do_ have getty's running on the first 6 consoles; once I quit X I can A-F2, etc. to switch to them. I've tried this both with a DM (GDM) started, and without one (using startx from the console). That stops packages you've taken from the Debian archive and modified locally from being overwritten on the next upgrade, certainly (you normally increase by 0.1). Packages you've created yourself and which don't exist at all in the archive will still appear in the "Obsolete/Local" section unless you create a pseudo-archive for yourself. >You can change the version of the package by adding to the >debian/changelog file. OTOH there's nothing to prevent you from using an alias for rm -i which is not a command (erase comes to mind) and using that. BTW another trick for deleting files more safely if you use rm -i is rm -i whatever/* and when you've checked that the first few are OK (i.e. you didn't type rm -i whatever/ *), press ^C, recall the command and precede with yes | (the assumes that this will prevent the line going into your history). And then I didn't write my oppinion on the subject. I have no problem giving Progeny a 100% reduce for sending Debian-related advertisement as mentioned at the end of the section about "Debian mailing list advertising policy" (Well I forgot to provide an URL to the stuff I quoted before. It's all on http://www.debian.org/MailingLists/ )

This is from http://www.debian.org/MailingLists/ - Debian mailing list advertising policy This policy is intended to fight mailing-list "spamming". The Debian mailing lists accept commercial advertising for payment. The fee for advertisments is a donation of USD 1000 or more to "Software in the Public Interest" (SPI). One donation per advertisement, please. If you prefer to pay in arrears, simply post your advertisement to the list, and the list operator will bill you USD 1999. The list operator will donate this amount, minus the expense of collecting it, to SPI. Please note that the lists are distributed automatically -- messages are generally not read or checked in any way before they are distributed. The act of posting an advertisement indicates your willingness to accept responsibility for the fee, indemnify the list operator against any legal claims from you or others in connection with your advertisement, and pay any legal and business expenses incurred in collecting late payment. Our liability to you is limited to a good-faith effort to deliver your message. Reduced rates and/or waiver of fee are available for Debian-related advertisements. You must consult the list operator in advance of posting for any reduction or fee waiver. - So, perhaps the fee should be $1999 USD (shouldn't this go up by year, so maybe $2001). However, this is Debian related, so perhaps a fee waiver is in order (after all Ian Murdock is the guy in charge). Brooks

gdm and NIS
Hi All, I'm trying to set up NIS to remote login to a server. The server is RedHat 7.0 which logs users into run level 3 and then lets them startx on thier own. The client is Debian (woody) using gdm to log users directly into run level 5. I was wondering if anyone knows how to tell gdm to get it's run levels from NIS instead of trying to log the user directly into run level 5? Thanks, Andy P.S. using a command line login this setup works.

ISDN help (please! :)
Hello, list, Ok, this ISDN thing is killing me. I want to install a PCI ISDN card in our server here at work so that the server will be directly connected to the internet. Right now it's behind a ISDN router/firewall and therefore certain things don't work correctly (like you can't connect to mail.server.com from the LAN, you have to use the LAN address [10.0.1.254]) I purchased an Eicon DIVA 2.01 PCI card (*not* PRO) and installed, recompiled the kernel and the card seems to be reconginized just fine. However, now I find I need an NT1 terminating device, which no one has in stock (of course). Also, upon further reading of the ISDN FAQ, it appears that perhaps this card won't even work in North America (I'm in Seattle and the ISDN line is definitely an NI-1 type). Can someone kind of spoon feed me here and help me straighten this out? My appreciation would be immeasurable. :) Cheers.
