linux kernel compile

1999-10-21 Thread Vincent & Sylvia Gaines

First I would just like to thank the people behind the Debian
distribution.
I work with software and have been very impressed with the way they have

organized their system distribution updates. to me ( still a "newbie")
dselect is a vital tool worth it's weight in gold!

1.) I installed Debian GNU/ Linux 2.1 using floppy images downloaded
from
the internet.
 - My system is Dual pentium 200 Mhz, 3Com 3C905, NE2000 ( linksys-
isa), Diamond Firport HP C310 SCSI-2 , with 96 Meg ram, Acer CD-ROM
 - Install worked great and when I boot up I get eth0 (3Com) and
eth1
(ne2000), all modules loaded perfectly no erroneous messages on boot
 - However no SMP support and driver for the 3Com card does not work

correct (messages in /var/log/syslog problems with irq)
 - DHCPD client daemon started ( I want to use a cable modem) no
inet
address from ifconfig -a for eth1.

2.) I recompile my kernel using "make-kpkg" and kernel-source-2.0.36
 - make menuconfig
 - make dep
 - make-kpkg clean
 - make-kpkg --revision=smp700 kernel-image
 - make-kpkg --revision=smp700 modules-image
 - cd..
 - dpkg --install kernel-source-2.0.36_smp700_i386.deb
 - here I have to mv /lib/modules/2.0.36 to /lib/modules/2.0.36.old
 - then I get prompted to make a boot floppy since I cannot boot
from
my scsi (bios does not see it) I attempt it
 - use your current /etc/lilo.conf? I say yes
 - error testing lilo.confetc
 - re execute dpkg --install kernel-source-2.0.36_smp700_i386.deb
 - create boot floppy and new lilo.conf

3.) When I reboot I lose my eth1 (NE2000) and get multiple messages such
as
cannot find module ne.etc
 - SMP works great, no eth1, eth0 works just fine( 3C905), dhcpcd
has
problems great (no interface..attached to eth1)
 - If i try to boot off an old floppy (not created by compile) I
still
get the same messages but with no SMP support.

I believe something about the way I compiled my kernel is causing me
problems. However I selected "Loaded modules support" and the drivers
required for both ethernet cards. i.e. 3c59x and ne.

What can I do to get both ethernet cards working and all modules loaded
at
boot time and still keep my SMP support?

and help is greatly appreciated.Thank You!

Re: New Kernel: make-kpkg vs. make bzLilo

1999-10-21 Thread eric k. wolven
Sal:

The kernel pkg script makes the modules. The dpkg -i kernel-image (etc)
installs the modules--and warns you to mv any old modules.

No make_install_modules is necessary with the kpg script.

I tried to install the 2.3.4 kernel from ftp.kernel.org. My system booted but
fluttered, so I stuck with debianised kernels. Others, apparently, have had
no problem with the later undebianized kernels.

The other stuff you ask I don't know.

Linux masquerading via M$ proxy

1999-10-21 Thread david . cureton
I am in a situation where access to the net is via Microsoft Proxy.

I would like to use my Linux box for net access but I have only seen client
software for the M$ Proxy for wintel workstation.

>From the advertising blurb it seams that the Microsoft Proxy will do
application proxy'ing and IP masquerading.

My question is:

1) Is the IP masquerading of the Microsoft product proprietary or is it
possible to get a linux box to masquerade via the MS proxy?

2) If the answer to question 1) is proprietary then is there any software in
the Linux domain that is compatible with this MS product?

Best Regards,

Yep. Looks like the 2.2.x series is smart enought not to
need them. Course, I still include them for completion's

Good News Reader?

1999-10-21 Thread Brian May
Hello All,

I have been looking for a excellent newsreader. Currently I have yet
to find a excellent one.

I have made comparisons here to non-Debian programs that
(slrn and gnus) that may be out-of-date or wrong for Debian.
Please tell me if you think anything I have said is wrong.

Currently I use mutt for all my mail. It has a number of good
features:
- excellent support for PGP
- adequate support for GPG (could be better IMHO).
- excellent support for MIME:
   - can forward messages as MIME attachments
   - can attach any number of messages.
- can reply to a number of messages at the same time
(saves time replying to each one individually - especially
if messages are from the same thread).
- fast. small. emacs not required or supported (I consider this
a feature ;-) )
- supports threading, but perhaps not as good as trn.
- doesn't die after period of inactive use and/or while entering
messages.
- ability to flag messages as high priority.

However, mutt doesn't support newsgroups :-(

Things I like about trn:
- easy to navigate threads.

Things I hate about trn:
- connection times out while I am writing a message, and crashes
whole program without saving list of read messages. There
is a long standing bug about this. This only occurs with the
Debian version().

- if too many headers are displayed, top headers will scroll of top
of screen. There is another long standing bug against this. A
maintainer told me fixing this would require majore redesign of
the program (from memory).

- Messages marked as read are removed immediately. If I accidently
mark a message as read that was important, it is very difficult
to find again, even if I realize immediately after making the mistake.

- poor support for MIME, and no support for PGP.

- doesn't support one way newsgroups that mirror mailing lists
(in only one direction) very well. I have a number of these.

- no way to flag messages as important.

Things I like about slrn:
- messages marked as read are not immediately removed.
- supports threading, but perhaps not as good as trn.
- no timeouts.
- can save an entire thread to disk. Although I prefer the cache
feature under gnus.

Things I dislike about slrn:
- poor support for MIME, and no support for PGP.
- no way to flag messages as important.
- doesn't support one way newsgroups that mirror mailing lists
(in only one direction) very well. I have a number of these.

- while messages that are marked are not immediately removed, I
constantly get mixed up between the keystrokes required for mutt and
slrn, and push q, intending the index of messages to fill the entire
screen. Wrong! q in slrn goes back to the index of newgroups, hence I
have to try and relocate articles that I accidently marked as read.

Things I like about gnus:
- ability to cache messages by marking them.
- ability to mark messages as important.
- supports one mailing list --> newsgroup gateways (one direction)
but I haven't tested it yet.

Things I dislike about gnus:
- last 10 times I tried running it, it always crashed on startup,
without giving any indication of a problem. xemacs completely died (no
response from anything) and I had to kill it. There have been problems
with the news server (ie currupted overview files), so perhaps it caused
my local files to become currupted (not sure).

- can't get PGP support to work. Haven't even tried GPG.

- requires xemacs, and xemacs is huge and slow (I don't have enough
hard disk space to install it on this computer).

- not really sure about MIME support. I read somewhere that it
was limited to processing mail with metamail (which I didn't like
about trn and slrn), but the admit the documentation could be wrong.

- requires memorizing complicated sequence of keystrokes.
- can't forward mail as MIME attachments (not that I have seen anyway).
- can't reply to multiple messages at the same time.
- don't know how to find all child articles for a given parent.

I have seen another package for xemacs, mews. Anyone tried it???

Not strictly related, but:
Things I like about mail --> news gateways:
- automated expiry of articles.

Things I dislike about mail --> news gateways:
- some I use have been configured for one way operation only.
- I can't get cross posts to work.
- removes To: header. Hence, when replying to a message, I am
not always sure who received the original.

It's a kernel issue. Linux 2.2.x automatically adds the routes for you
when you configure your network interfaces. Linux 2.0.x does not, so you
have to add the routes manually.

Good -- you have an IBM token ring card. The Linux kernel has some
support for IBM token ring cards, so you may be able to get it to work.
(I was stuck with a Madge ISA token ring card for a while, and there's
*no* support for Madge non-PCI tr cards)

The next issue will be Netware. If you're really lucky, your company
will be using Netware 3, or Netware 4 with the bindery emulation option
turned on. Or if you're really unlucky, your company will be using
Netware 4 with no bindery emulation (which you will NOT be able to use,
unless you can somehow get the shitty Caldera Netware client to work,
which I never managed to do no matter how hard I tried).

But if it's Netware 3 or Netware 4 + bindery, use the ncpfs utilities
(slist, pqlist, ncpmount, nprint(?), etc.), and good luck.

On the other hand, if all you want from Netware is access to the printers,
and not access to shared file systems, then you may be able to bypass
Netware altogether, and use BSD remote printing to talk to the printers
directly. But this will only work if the printers have IP addresses...
which may not be the case (depending on how Netware-centric your printer
administrators are).

Tell your MUA to tell your MTA to set the envelope sender to whatever
you need it to be.

I don't know exim, but if it's the same as sendmail, you want to make
sure the sendmail-emulation-wrapper is invoked with '-f [EMAIL PROTECTED]'.

E.g., with mutt you'd want something like this in ~/.muttrc:

set sendmail='/usr/sbin/sendmail -oem -oi -f [EMAIL PROTECTED]'

Do you mean 'modules-image'? That's used if you have things like pcmcia or
alsa that should be recompiled at the same time as the kernel (they'll be
in /usr/src/modules/...)

Only when you have add-ons like alsa or pcmcia. A deb will be generated
for you to install along with the kernel deb (just like the
pcmcia-modules-x.y.zz available on the mirrors)

sound blaster pnp, please help!

1999-10-21 Thread Jacob Schmude
Hello

I've finally got my system upgraded to debian potato (don't know how I got
emacs installed). However, my sound card only partially works. Wav and au
files play, but midi and mp3 do not. I'm trying to play mp3 with mpg123.
This worked on redhat with its sndconfig utility. The exact details of my
card settings and the module loading commands follow:

card model: creative vibra 16x pnp
irq: 5
base io: 220
mpu io: 300
dma: 1
dma16: 5

The command I used to load the modules (for kernel 2.2.10) is
modprobe sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x300

If it has to do with the pnp (plug&play) fact, how in the world do you set
up isapnp.conf? It looks like a programming language.

RE: IBM Thinkpad 560 - (YES, ALL SET FOR THOSE PROBLEMS)

1999-10-21 Thread John Miskinis

Hi,

Wow, I sent that mail on 9/9/99 (interesting numbers) and since then
I've become a linux nut. Yes, I ended up using the tecra disks. I
think it might have been you that helped me way back then.

The problems I was experiencing were due to the PCMCIA-based CDROM
I had, and I thought it was possible to "easily" get that to work.
I finally did get that to work, but I now use my PCMCIA-SCSI host
adapter (Bus Toaster) with a SCSI-based JVC CDROM/RW which is much
more reliable, since it stays spun up, etc.. I think my H45 QuickCD
needs to be repaired, as it was flaky since about day 3 on Win95. I
needed to make sure I got my other one working before making
arrangements to send it in to be checked out. It "freezes" now
and then, and needs to be powered off/on. Plus a tiny screw came
out of it one day, when I noticed some rattle, and tipped it.

I do not think I am using the best capabilities though. My X Windows
Screen is dimmer than it should be, with the XF86Config I hacked up
to get rid of the flicker. Also the "fvwm2" window manager is not
usable, as it leaves graphics behind using that config. The configs
I found on the net ALL have BAD FLICKER but "fvwm2" does work with
them. (40 versus 28.32 dot clock).

Note that sometimes (very rarely) my (flicker free dim) config causes
a pixel or two to be left behind in other apps. (Like xfishtank, and
only once in xclock). So I am not blaming fvwm2 for anything!

I'm pretty happy all in all, but still get lost when trying to get
the newer gnome up, or even enlightment-conf. It appears that there
are MANY dependencies, for enlightment-conf, that require newer
versions of a LOT of things, as soon as you start adding things
like libart2 and freetype2 (I believe).

So for the most part, I'm trying to stay with the stuff on the 2.1
CD. I just started playing with the GTK widget set today.

Enough disk space wasted for this message,

John

ash - options to `echo' command

1999-10-21 Thread Gregory T. Norris
I was just curious about why ash's builtin `echo' command no longer
accepts any options? It causes interesting (though generally harmless)
output in a variety of places, because I use ash as /bin/sh. For
example:

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] grep -l "echo -n" /etc/init.d/* | wc -l
  35

I haven't filed a bug report because changelog.Debian.gz shows that it
was an intentional change... so I assume that it was done in order to
conform with POSIX (or another such standard). Is this correct? If
so, I guess I should start filing `bashism' bug-reports against scripts
which start out `#! /bin/sh' and make use of `echo -n' or `echo -e'?

I hope the tone of this comes across correctly (sometimes difficult to
do via email). I'm simply curious about the reasoning... don't mean to
whack you on the side of the head with a 2x4 or anything :-) I've CC'd
debian-user, just in case others are curious (since the ash vs bash for
/bin/sh debate turns up periodically).

Thanx!

setgid on a directory makes all the files created in that directory
group-owned by the group of the directory. This allows members of group
'staff' to (more or less) maintain stuff in that directory. If you're
like most home users and don't have to worry about that sort of delegation
of responsibility, it basically doesn't matter.

It does. Mount points take on the permissions of the / directory of the
mounted filesystem when they are mounted. But the permissions of the
mount point are retained also, just not used until the filesystem is
unmounted again.

you possibly haven't enabled relaying for the local host.
I use exim and fetchmail with no trouble at all.

try looking in /etc/exim.conf and checking 'local_domains = ' to see if it
includes 'localhost'

The change was made in line with the SuS. Note that it is not possible
to write echo statements portably across platforms because of legacy
shells that do support options. That is why it is recommended to use
printf instead of echo.

Yes, options are not supported under the SuS.

RE: sound blaster pnp, please help!

1999-10-21 Thread Bryan Scaringe
man isapnp
man isapnp.conf

generate a basic isapnp.conf file like this:

pnpdump > ~/isapnp.conf

That will create a file called isapnp.conf in your home directory.
When we're finished, we will copy it to /etc/isapnp.conf.

Now, somethings you need to do:

1) Make sure support for ALL ISA PNP cards is in the form
of modules. isapnp needs to set up the cards before the kernel
support is setup. modules are the only way to put that support
off long enough for isapnp to do its thing.

2) Go to http://www.roestock.demon.co.uk/isapnptools/
Try setting up the file from the information you find there.
If it doesn't work, proceed to step 3.

3) Read the man pages above. If you're still having trouble,
   go to step 4.

4) post your isapnp.conf. I can try to walk you through it,
but I may not be able to till Monday.

RE: [Fwd: Sound with Debian]

1999-10-21 Thread Bryan Scaringe
Hmm. Since Support for sound cards is part of the kernel,
and the kernel is the same in all Linux distributions,
then I would have to say: if RedHat supports it, Debian supports
it. Granted, Debian doesn't have the sndconf executable, but
that just builds a line for the modules.conf file, which
you can do by hand.

I have included the file:
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/CS4232

Also, I notice you say "short of recompiling a kernel".
Please, please, please: Don't be afraid to recompile the kernel.
You will be doing yourself a big favor if you learn how to do it.

Also note that Debian has its own way of compiling kernels!
make sure you get the kernel-package package. Then read
the README that comes with it.

To configure the Crystal CS423x sound chip and activate its DSP functions,
modules may be loaded in this order:

modprobe sound
insmod ad1848
insmod uart401
insmod cs4232 io=* irq=* dma=* dma2=*

This is the meaning of the parameters:

io--I/O address of the Windows Sound System (normally 0x534)
irq--IRQ of this device
dma and dma2--DMA channels (DMA2 may be 0)

On some cards, the board attempts to do non-PnP setup, and fails. If you
have problems, use Linux' PnP facilities.

To get MIDI facilities add

insmod opl3 io=*

where "io" is the I/O address of the OPL3 synthesizer. This will be shown
in /proc/sys/pnp and is normally 0x388.

It depends on which kernel version you have. Witn 2.0.x, i think you could
compile the alsa modules and insert them (remember, ALSA 0.4 doesn't
support kernel 2.0.x anymore)

For 2.2.x, there is no way.

> > Red Hat comes with executable sound support in the distribution,

Nope. i don't know the reasoning for sure, but probably it involves saving
space on the installation media and the fact that sound is both
unnecessary for the most part and rather complex to set up.

> > uname -a indicates 2.0.36 . Does anybody have precompiled

It'd probably be easier (and more educational) to recompile the kernel.
Look at the list archives for discussions on how to do so, and look into
the kernel-package package. There's even a thread going on currently on
the subject: "New Kernel: make-kpkg vs. make bzLilo"

Related utilities are mostly Debian packages. You'll probably want a
mixer, you'll definately want sox. There are many other apps for handling
various formats.

See bugs#47833 for instance. This is only minor, but still is inconvenient.

The biggest problem was with selecting a users public key when encrypting
a message. It wouldn't list the user names I wanted to see. I filled
this as bug #39793, but that has since been closed. I assume that
this means the problem should be fixed in potato, but haven't checked.

FYI, this is from the bug report:

[...]
Now it gives me a menu of keys to choose from:
   1 ? 1024/0x59EF33BD RSA es Brian May <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
   2 ? 1024/0x59EF33BD RSA es Brian May <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
   3 ? 1024/0x70148CF9 RSA es Brian May <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Note: It key 1 and 2 are both the same key. It doesn't display the
2nd UID of this key, which is [EMAIL PROTECTED], the desired one.
(Look up my key on the Developers key ring if you are not sure).

PGP would display this instead:
   1 + 1024/0x59EF33BD RSA es Brian May <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
   2 + 1024/0x59EF33BD RSA es Brian May <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
   3 + 1024/0x70148CF9 RSA es Brian May <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

If I try to encrypt the message without signing, it comes up with the
prompt:
Enter keyID for [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

but won't accept anything I type - I have to sign the message
as well for it to work.

You *could* do that. But, it would be easier to use apt-get. For
  instance:

$ apt-get update # Get the latest package listing
$ apt-get -s install bind # Tell me what would be done if
# installing bind
  $ apt-get install bind# Actually install/upgrade package

That's not necessary. Unless there's a new version of the package
available, dselect will realize that nothing needs to be done for the
package and therefore will do nothing with it.

If there is a new version available, [with the default layout] it will
show up at the top under a heading "Updated packages", and unless you take
action (hold, for example) it will download and install the new version
for you. This is generally considered a good thing.

curious as to why there was no realtek 8139 driver included in slink. and
it doesnt appear as an option in the kernel that slink comes with (2.2.12
currently -- using the CD from the new O'reilley book) even tho the

gonna try again with the 2.0.36, hope i can get the NIC working the only

Shift click is another way to make Netscape download to file...

Also, try editing the preferences (Edit -> Preferences -> Navigator ->
Applications) as netscape sometimes comes configured to try to display
file types it shouldn't...

For instance, if Netscape insists on displaying .tar files instead of
offering the Save As popup: select the line with Unix Tape Archive,
click Edit and change the Handled by to Save To Disk

Re: small dselect question AND X Window problem

1999-10-21 Thread John Miskinis

Hi,

You might not realize yet that CASE matters on Linux/Unix..

   /etc/X11/XF86Config

I think it can be in a couple other places, and in fact I
got "hosed" this way a few times, as I had files in two places
and couldn't figure out why the changes I made were not being
   seen.

I think the "apt-get" install mechanism only works over the net,
which I can't use. I get the impression from your previous
posts that you use a different computer to get to the internet.
(I use the same computer, different OS!)

If I want to install just one (or even more) packages from the
CD I run "dselect". After satisfying the questions about ACCESS
and UPDATE, I choose (the next default) SELECT. I immediately
hit spacebar and return, to get to the main list. Then a "v"
to get into verbose mode. Then an uppercase) "I", to get
the whole "screen". I then navigate
down to the package(s) I want with the down arrow. I use a "+"
which selects the file for installation (if it isn't already).
Assuming no dependency problems, after you have selected the
package(s) you want, hit return. The next steps are INSTALL,
then CONFIGURE, then REMOVE (won't do anything unless you used
"-" to ask for packahes to be removed), then QUIT. It will walk
you through these last steps by default.

Good Luck,

John

I've done it, no problems here. YMMV.

with 2.2.12 you had to add -fno-scrict-aliasing to the Makefile CC
arguments, I am told that 2.2.13 will detect gcc 2.95 and do that
automagically 2.2.13 is trickling through my slow modem so I do not

Aside from a proprietary application (of which I do not know of) you could
always use the a shell script and the comman "script" but I am unsure how you
would differentiate between ssh and telnet If you want people to use ssh add
something to your /etc/issue stating in x number of days/weeks telnet will not
be available; and any users wishing shell access need to obtain and install
ssh. Then have them request shell access. This way you could control who has
shell access by adding thier host to ssh.allow (Or whatever the file is)

I solved the problem now, seems that the printer spool directory somehow got
the wrong permissions, which blocked lpd from doing remote printing. After
changing it so it had the same permission as on the other machine, I got
remote printing to work under Debian as well.

Now, if I can find out how to do remote printing under OS/2, I'd be very

Wouldn't that mean that should a newer and better version of any ='ed file

Sounds like a bad side effect.
If you know you just want to install one thing and dont want to wait for
dselect to run for an hour, try dpkg.

If you know exactly where the .deb package is, you can skip making it have
to go through all the programsGo to the directory where the .deb file
is, and type:

dpkg -i debianpackagefilename.deb

and it should install the package. If it comes up with errors, then I

Maybe a permission problem ?
I started adding a new user and group for soffice and installed under his
permission.
Afterwards just add the users you want to this group, verify that all
permission are set
correctly for the group (not only for the user) and thats it. Now you
should get the normal
install-screen from soffice. (Thats the way it worked for me).

I know there are some problems with SMP, if you are using SMP I would suggest
upgrading to a 2.2.x kernel (latest is 2.2.13, out today).

You're doing some things with the kernel build that you do not need to do.

Process for building a kernel in Debian -

In /usr/src/linux

1. make menuconfig

*be sure to read the kernel docs for all the hardware you have to make sure
you
have everything you need selected in the kernel. Is your network card ISA or
PCI?
If it is PCI, compile the driver straight into the kernel - not as a module.
If it's
ISA, it will have to be a module.

2. make-kpkg clean

3. make-kpkg --revision=smp700 kernel_image

***modules are put in the deb image, there is no need for a make-kpkg
modules_image

4. cd ..

5. dpkg -i kernel-image-2.x.x_smp700_i386.deb

If you use a newer, 2.2.x kernel, you will not have to mv /lib/modules/2.0.36 to
/lib/modules/2.0.36.old.

Reboot your machine, re-run modconf to select the modules you want to load, then
reboot again to verify all is well.

Mail me back if you need any more help...

If you mean Ensoniq, then the answer is "probably". I don't know the
full range of cards that they make, but the ES1370/1371 based cards are
supported in Linux, both in the kernel sound drivers, and in ALSA.

The ES1370 card is called Ensoniq AudioPCI.
The ES1371 is the Ensoniq AudioPCI'97.

I actually thought that Creative Labs bought Ensoniq, and were making
their cards under different names now (or does that only apply to the
AudioPCI range?). The Creative Labs cards using the ES1370/1371 chips
are the Soundblaster PCI 64 and the PCI 128.

Your best bet is to find out more about the card, and check out
www.alsa-project.org's list of supported cards.

If you want well supported cards that are made by Linux friendly people,
I think the Trident cards are what you're after, if I remember
correctly.

Personally, I'm using ALSA and a Soundblaster PCI 64 (ES1370 chipset).
It's adequate for what I use it for, and it was cheap. It doesn't sound
as good as my Yamaha Waveforce YMF724 did (which was only half the
price, too), but Yamaha aren't giving out the documentation for that
chipset, so we won't be seeing support for it anytime soon. :-(

How to shut up dselect?

1999-10-21 Thread Daniel Haude
Hi,

I have a question related to installing non-debian programs:

When I first installed Debian 2.1, I noticed that it came with teTeX 0.9.
I un-installed that and installed teTeX-1.0 from the CTAN archive. Of
course, the debian package manager doesn't know about this, so whenever I
use dselect, it comes up with this old "some package needs teTeX" line. I
once even didn't notice and let dselect have its way, so all of a sudden
it started installing teTeX 0.9. I hit Ctrl-C to stop that (I know, bad
idea), and now teTeX 0.9 is so fucked up that dselect won't even
un-install whatever fragments it managed to put on the disk. It tells me
to install it first and then un-install it.

In this case, this is not a big problem because I have teTeX entirely
under its own tree in /usr/local/teTeX, so messing around with another
version will not do any damage. But if I had installed teTeX-1.0 in the
same place as 0.9, it would now certainly be broken.

Is there a way to tell dselect: "I installed sucha-and-such myself, it's

See "http://www.debian.org/Packages/unstable/admin/equivs.html";.

You can create any pseudo package with equivs which fools the package
management into believing that the mimicked package is actually installed.

You should _always_ install non-debian packages under /usr/local. That
is the only way to guarantee that debian will not fudge with it.
Practically all compilable software you find in the wild will by default
install itself in /usr/local anyway.

The equivs package was designed to deal with this situation.

What does Quality mean?

When I do a lookup of Debian packages on debian.org, I get answers like:

   Release Quality Package (size)

Dummy package to ease upgrades from earlier Debian versions.

What does this Quality stand for?

You're not actually doing a lookup; you're doing a search. The Quality is an
estimate of the applicability of the search result, similar to the "score"s
on which web search engines sort.

Data Aquisition Cards?

A shot in the dark.
What are people using with temperature sensors, oxygen probes, etc.,
on linux systems? Where can I find an IEEE488 card, cheap?

I have been thinking about these things for years, and I have a couple
hundred bucks to buy some hardware to enhance my science classroom,
but haven't a clue where to start. Apple was using the 1eee488 years
ago. Why can't I find a simple, cheap PCI ieee488 card?

I apologize, if (as it probably is) this is off-topic...

Update on modutils

1999-10-21 Thread Wichert Akkerman

As a lot of you have experienced, the changes I made in modutils 2.3.5-1
managed to break a fair number of machines. I have just uploaded 2.3.6-3
to fix this. Let me explain what happened:

In /etc/modutils/paths there were a lot of path-statements to set the
default paths where depmod, insmod and modprobe would search for modules.
However with modutils 2.3.5 all those paths were also builtin-defaults,
so those statements were no longer needed. So I removed those since having
them in multiple places didn't seem needed.

Now comes the problem: if a `path'-statement is used in modules.conf,
all the default-paths will be ignored. A couple of packages added those
paths, for example ALSA. This meant that anyone who used such a package
would end up with a broken system.. unluckily this sneaked past my own
tests since I no longer use ALSA on my systems at home.

I have fixed this by adding a file /etc/modutils/0keep, which contains
a `keep'-statement. This prevens the default paths from being ignored
and fixed the just mentioned problems.

I apologize for the problems this may have caused, and hope this upload
will fix all of them. At least it works for me(TM)..

Wichert.

Solution: SB PCI 128 sound card and ALSA 0.4.1 on 2.2.x potato

1999-10-21 Thread Brian Boonstra
Hi

It was a terrible pain for me to get this card working with my
potato system, so I for the benefit of any future souls clever enough to
search the archives for help, here is (my understanding of) how it worked:

- Compile a new kernel with OSS native sound support. It does not matter if
you compile it with the specific support for the Ensoniq 1370/1371 or not.
For a Debian system, I got the kernel source 2.2.12 package and did

# cd /src/linux
# zcat kernel-source-2.2.12.tar.gz | tar xf -
# ln -s kernel-source-2.2.12 linux
# cd linux
# make menuconfig
{ Set lots of kernel choices, a tedious process. Do not
forget to include sound!}
# make-kpkg clean
# make-kpkg --revision=3:custom.1.0 kernel_image
{ This "3:" business is an 'epoch number' that will
later turn out to be incompatible with
ALSA, but I want it for kernel installations }

- Compile the ALSA modules

# cd /src/linux
# make-kpkg --revision=foralsa.1.0 modules_image
{ We cannot use the epoch scheme, so we do a
different revision}

- Install the new kernel and modules

# cd /usr/src
# dpkg -i kernel-image-2.2.blahblahblah
# dpkg -i alsa-modules-2.2.blahblahblah

- Let ALSA configure itself

# alsaconfig
{One mistake to avoid: I was not sure if I needed ens1370
or ens1371 -- even though it autodetected ens1370
I actually thought the latter was what I wanted.
So I chose both.  Big problems.}

- Reboot (we're not finished yet)

# reboot

- Get the driver going

# modprobe snd-card-ens1370
# amixer set "Master" unmute
# amixer set "Master" 100%
# amixer set "CD" unmute
# amixer set "CD" 100%
# amixer set "PCM" unmute
# amixer set "PCM" 100%

- Try playing a CD and some sounds. You'll probably want to play with those
volumes a little.

Things I am still trying to figure out:

- Why do I get constant hissing whenever the volume is at an audible
setting or above?

- Is it better to have the Master volume at high settings and the
others low, or vice versa?

- Will I need to do anything for the Joystick port?

Brian

# dpkg -i alsa-modules-2.2.whatever_0.4.1b-1+foralsa.1.0_i386.deb

- Let ALSA configure itself

# alsaconfig
{One mistake to avoid: I was not sure if I needed ens1370
or ens1371 -- even though it autodetected ens1370
I actually thought the latter was what I wanted.
So I chose both.  Big problems.}

- Reboot (we're not finished yet)

# reboot

- Get the driver going

# modprobe snd-card-ens1370
# amixer set "Master" unmute
# amixer set "Master" 100%
# amixer set "CD" unmute
# amixer set "CD" 100%
# amixer set "PCM" unmute
# amixer set "PCM" 100%

- Try playing a CD and some sounds. You'll probably want to play with those
volumes a little.

Things I am still trying to figure out:

- Why do I get constant hissing whenever the volume is at an audible
setting or above?

- Is it better to have the Master volume at high settings and the
others low, or vice versa?

- Will I need to do anything for the Joystick port?

Yours,

Brian
