Using here quite successfully. But check with your provider that he has
only one box as both modems must be connected to the same box. If he has
multiple boxes you might have to make a lot of calls to achieve this.

What we need is multi-link ppp. Available (so I'm told) for FreeBSD and
W95 but not for Linux.

There is an eql package. Contact me by email if you need help.

enable rlogin with PAM? (pam setup)

1998-06-26 Thread Jeff Raubitschek
I havent taken the time to figure out how to use PAM yet and i just
upgraded to debian hamm. Unfortunately now rlogin doesnt work.

I understand the basic concepts behind PAM and have tried adding
"auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_rhosts_auth.so"
to my login pam config file.

but that didnt seem to solve the problem. When is this file loaded. how
do I get it to be reread? or did i do something wrong?

Could it be possible to make this an installation choice.
Asking user: "Allow rlogin? [y/N] "

or make therlogin pam setup correct by default (if this isnt a security
risk)?

thank you,

Hmm, no... There is support for the (semi?) standard multilink ppp protocol
under development... It is not in the standard kernel yet, and I don't remember
the www site, but an altavista search for "ppp multilink protocol" +linux
should get it for you.

Er... I'm not sure if PAM is used by default in Debian. At least, I don't think
that all the programs that could (should?) use it. Maybe someone else has more
info? PAM always looked interesting, but not quite stable yet, and lacking the
program support it really needed. But, I definitely want to play with it if it
is standard on Debian.

I couldn't find the package but I compiled the source off sunsite ok
(I think, some source hacks required) on a bo system. I'm trying to play
around with parallel ethernet. One of the networks is my regular
ethernet, the other is another I've added between two machines.
I've configured the addresses and the second ethernet is working fine.
I eql_enslaved the devices on each end and added a route to the eql
device, but can't ping and there's no sign of any traffic being sent.
/proc/net/dev lists lots of packets being dropped on the eql device,
nothing sent or received.

Any ideas?

Might I inquire as to what this bootmap stuff is about and why its
important? I've built and used kernels 2.0.29,2.0.30,2.0.32,2.0.33 and 2.0.34 on

Answer off the top of my head (so check the details if it matters):

Lilo stores the actual disk address of the kernel in the boot map (this is
run before there is an operating system to interpret the file system). If
you recompile the kernel, it will almost certainly be somewhere different
and you won't be able to boot. If you build the kernel with `make zlilo'
this is done for you, which is perhaps why you haven't had any problem.
If you use `make zimage', on the other hand, you must run lilo before you
reboot.

Re: Linux system Instalation - CRC Error

1998-06-26 Thread Jieyao

I have a feeling that Debian /Linux is particularly sensitive to media defect.
Even
when I use disk that are formatted perfectly in win95, I still get error during
installing.
Something retrying works.

But the easiest way out is to get a new box of floppy. You would need 9 disks,
about a box.

BTW, what's the root disk for? I don't think it was used for installation.

Kernel-source dependence

1998-06-26 Thread Jieyao
Hi,

Do you think there is a dependence on bin86 missing for the kernel-source
package?

I was unable to compile the kernel for some thing and sent time digging at all
places before I discover I did not install the bin86 package.

Why wan't bin86 installed? Well I tried to trim the system, leaving out package
that don't sound familiar hoping the dependence checking would warn me.

What if you fire up Netscape, and don't look at any web pages other than
whatever your startup home page is, and just leave it for an hour. Does

Ok, so the gov't thinks strong encryption is munitions so you can't export it.
Why have non-us.debian.org: You can't import it either? Or you just can't use
it at all in the US?

.Not like making _rules_ about import and export can actually stop what
people do with source available on the net?. Surely if you are a criminial
of the sort that the govt is so intent on stopping, then you would have no
problem with using illegally electronically exported/imported encryption code?

Any good sites explaining the matter?

try "eval `lesspipe`" and using plain less.
Xserver.1x.gz seems to be a man page. So either put it in a path were
man finds it (beware of duplicates) or look at man man if there´s an
option to read a man page from another place then /usr/man/wherever.

Last resort is using [gtn]roff -man(doc) Xserver.1x |less for it.

Thank you for replying and no, my inetd.conf did not have that line for
exim. That line looked like this:

 # smtp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/in.smtpd (will be
 restored by smail postinst)

and there was no exim-line. The exim installation script seems to be
buggy.

Anyhow, I did put the line you supplied above in inetd.conf and rebooted
the computer because I do not know how to get inetd to read that file
otherwise (later I discovered inetd-update and used it to enable smtp,
but without any positive results).

I then sent a test message to myself locally using mailto. No error
messages appeared, and the file was in /var/spool/exim/input. I tried to
send an test message using Pine but the message was again:

[Error sending: 421 SMTP connection went away!]

To send this message, I had to remove exim again and reinstall smail.

Johann

Re: xhost

1998-06-26 Thread Ian Eure
Ok. The government of the USA classifies encryption code as a munition, ie a
tool of war; presumably because it is in fact used during wars to stop the
enemy from recieving messages intended for your own side. Ok. So, there is also
this law about not exporting munitions from the USA. Also a USA-specific law.
What this means is that the US government can come down _hard_ on anyone making
encryption software (or hardware) available to non-US citizens. Since, if you
put, say, a copy of PGP on a ftp server in the US, you cannot (easily) verify
that the person(s) downloading it are US citizens without violating a federal
law, all encryption-related software must be distributed from sources outside
the US. Importing encryption software into the US is not an issue.

Note that the actual law states that no encryption stronger than 40 bits may
be exported- 40 bits or lower is ok to export. This makes it very hard to get
copies of, say, pgp (1024+ bits == not ok to export) - which was written in the
US - outside the US border legally. Very hard, but not impossible- the law in
question does not prohibit written or printed copies. So, a printed copy of
PGP was shipped outside the country, where it was scanned, OCR'd and proofred
for errors. At which point it was distributed on a global scale, from outside
the US, legally- since the country it was being distributed from didn't have any
ack-basswords laws about exporting strong encryption products.

Yes, you are correct. The law(s) are pointless. Lobby your local
representative.

Updating using apt

1998-06-26 Thread Daniel Mashao
Anybody successfully upgraded from bo using "apt-get update"? I get a lot
of errors about not being able to connect, but normal ftp works. The sites
that are specified are
http://ftp1.us.debian.org
and http://non-us.debian.org

any clues?

Actually, being in SA I would prefer to get a CD than go through ftp due
to bandwidth problem. Anyone selling recently pressed CD's cheaply enough
to entice me?

Hmmm. I got the impression that it should work on any link. They use
plip as an example in the doco, I think. I did try it with the same IP
on both links (a bit weird on ethernet but anyway) and didn't seem to
get anywhere further. I'll try again soon and check out the kernel list.

Problem w/ network card during boot

1998-06-26 Thread Gunnar Strand
Hi,

I have a problem when switching on the power. A module named
"seeq8005" seems to be probing and successfully detecting
"something". I suspect seeq8005 is a network h/w, because it
will be given device eth0. Later in the boot sequence my NE2000
card is successfully probed and given eth1.

When I reboot, seeq8005 either won't probe or fails to probe
because the NE card will be eth0 (as it should be). It is only
after a power on the seeq8005 conflicts w/ my NE card. The
reported io addresses are NOT the same; seeq8005 reports 0x300
and 0x240 for the NE card.

I'm using the latest distribution previous to the 2.0 beta. The
problem appears on both of my installed hosts. I can't any reference
to seeq8005 in the modconf program either.

Anybody got an idea?

fvwm2/xterm/bash/(child process) problem part II

1998-06-26 Thread Colin Telmer
Say I run a process in the background from an xterm. For example,

emacs &

Then, if I kill the xterm by clicking on the X in the right, top corner,
it ALSO kills emacs. On the other hand, if I kill the xterm by typing
`exit' at the command line, the emacs job continues. I want to have the
corner button under fvwm2 act like 'exit' so that I can close the shell
either way. At the moment under fvwm2, the corner button is mapped to
the builtin fvwm2 function "close".

[addition] What it seems like I would need to do is to kill the shell
rather than the xterm.

Is there any way to do this? Any help is gratefully appreciated.

Cheers, Colin.

The thing with eql is you need a linux box on both ends of the
connections. Our company put a linux box out at our ISP's site
so we can use eql. They're a small ISP and easy to work with.

Other ISPs might support "multilink PPP" but probably not eql.

Missing files on ftp.debian.org?

1998-06-26 Thread Debian Mail
Hi there!

The day before yesterday I went to ftp.debian.org and fetched hamm by
saying
get current.tar.gz
in linux/distributions/debian/hamm/hamm/disks-i386
and the the same with the binary directories.
I unziped the received file. the files in current have the date Jun 24
02:15 but the directory is not complete.
resc1440.bin
base2_0.tgz
base14-1.bin
and other files are missing. So i checked just now on ftp.debian.org: All
the files are there, but their time stamp says: Jun 23 20:14 for most
of the files. So why did some files miss at Jun 24 02:15? And why is
the timestamp now set to an earlier time?

mailx problem

1998-06-26 Thread Gregory Green
I reconfigured my smail, now when I run mailx from the command line I
have a problem. Example:
mailx -s "test" [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Cc:
Null message body; hope that's ok

When ever I press return to start a new line, I get the Null message
body; hope that's ok message.
Then when I recieve the mail, I have no message body. Is this something
that can be switched in the /etc/smail/config file?
I have restarted smail several times, but to no avail.

Any ideas?

Dselect: Is it being redeveloped?

1998-06-26 Thread Rod Troch

Greetings list,

Last week, at the Usenix conference, I received a free CD copy of Debian
1.3. The CD is labeled with Novare' on it, if that matters.

Anyway, I figured it was time to rebuild my current Linux system. I am
running Red Hat's version 3.0.3 that has been upgraded and patched with
both RPMs and manual software builds, etc. I did a safe thing, brought
the box to single user mode and did two tars to my 8mm drive. One tar
was of the /home partition and the other tar was of everything except the
home partition and the /proc system. I am glad I did those backups as
you will read later.

I merrily read some of the quick READMEs and made my boot floppy. I
cross my fingers issue the shutdown command from my old faithfully
running system and wait while the reboot happens. All is good so far.
Debian boots from the floppy and starts asking me relevant installation
questions. I go ahead and reformat checking for bad blocks my /dev/sda2
and /dev/sda3 (and /dev/sda4 - swap) partitions. Things go smoothly up
until now.

The system does some work and reboots if I remember correctly, ultimately
I end up at the Dselect tool screen. I was really feeling confident
because the install was working well. This is where things started to
get interesting.

Dselect displayed a large list of packages, and had some recommended for
installation others were not marked for installation. I understand
that. I looked at the packages and figured, what the heck and Dselect do
its thing. It read many packages from my cd-rom and a bit of time later
wanted a reboot (I think). I then started Dselect again this time
choosing packages such as Sendmail (to replace smail) and a few others.
The Dselect tool was quite confusing and was not easy for me to figure
out with regards to packages already installed. I saw numerous "*", "-",
"_", etc. I read the help pages but they were sorely lacking good solid
information. I thought to myself, this can't be that hard. I have been
running Linux for a while now and can hobble together my missing packages
like X later after I get the networking ironed out, etc.

Well.. To make a long and windy email message more concise I will say
that I spent more time fiddling with dip (to get my static IP slip stuff
working) and had loads of trouble. Feeling plenty depressed I resorted
to recovering my old working system from those two tar tapes I made.
Many hours later the system was back to its old state.

The real question I pose after all of this dribble is, has Dselect been
revised or changed with the advent of 1.3.1 or 2.0? I think I can get
over the changes in how the /etc/rc.d/ startup scripts behaviour as
compared to Red Hat linux (at least the version of RH that I was running)
and the other small oddities, but what I am hoping for is possible a more
user intuitive package tool.

Now, I was REALLY impressed by the installation tool when it installed
Sendmail, asking me for relevant information about my mail setup. I do
not think that Red Hat offers that (and asking those questions and doing
a config of the software is a good thing) and its little gems like that
that are keeping me interested in Debian as opposed to rushing out and
getting RHh 5.1.x and setting it up.

Thanks for letting me take your time to ramble and vent a bit. I do
really hope some work is under way with regards to a more polished Dselect.

Thanks,
Rod

I ran in to the same problem a couple of months ago. The reason there isn't
a dependence on bin86 is because only i386 machines need bin86. The kernel
packages themselves are architecture independent, so there was no easy way
to specify the dependence on bin86.

The way around this problem is to read the documentation that comes with
the kernel related packages. The need for bin86 is pointed out there. I
am guessing that you (like me) missed those references.

Page counting / Print quota

1998-06-26 Thread Chris
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone out there has a print quota system running, and
if they could give me some advice on how to set one up. Is there a
package that can do this?

Also, does anyone know how to count the number of pages in a print job. I
can try and do this by interpreting the postscript, but I have heard that
this can be done by communicating with the printer (obtaining the total
page count before and after the job, and using the difference). If anyone
has information on this I would really appreciate it. The printer we are
using is a HP LaserJet 5M (postscript), and it has a jetdirect so that it
appears as a remote print spooler.

Thanks for any help/advice,

Chris

Hi

Have you tried pac, the printer accounting utility? Do a "man pac" do get
some additional information. As far as I know, pac is part of the default
Debian installation. Here is an excerpt from the pac man page:

---
NAME
 pac - printer/plotter accounting information

SYNOPSIS
 pac [-Pprinter] [-c] [-m] [-pprice] [-s] [-r] [name ...]

DESCRIPTION
Pac reads the printer/plotter accounting files, accumulating the
number of pages (the usual case) or feet (for raster devices) of paper
consumed by each user, and printing out how much each user consumed in
pages or feet and dollars.

Hmmm... I'm confused here. This is during the compile phase, which has
nothing to
do with the libraries (unless the compiler itself uses libraries, in which case
I
would expect a mismatch to cause the compiler to core dump, not this). Why
would
a change in libraries cause an include file not to be found?

Yes, I have seen this. The problem with this is how do I generate the

Apt problems

1998-06-26 Thread Chris

Hello again,

I'm having a problem with apt. I've just done an upgrade of my hamm
system with a few updated packages, and now everytime I run apt, it wants
to remove its own package. The following is a sample session with apt:

mort:~# apt-get update
Get ftp://ftp.questnet.net.au stable/binary-i386/ Packages
Get ftp://ftp.questnet.net.au frozen/contrib Packages
Get ftp://ftp.questnet.net.au frozen/main Packages
Get ftp://ftp.questnet.net.au frozen/non-free Packages
Updating package file cache...done
Updating package status cache...done
Checking system integrity...dependency error
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these.
Sorry, but the following packages are broken - this means they have unmet
dependencies:
  apt: Depends:libc6
mort:~# apt-get -f install
Updating package status cache...done
Checking system integrity...dependency error
Correcting dependencies...ok
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  apt
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0b of archives. After unpacking 1238k will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] n

So, apt has a missing dependancy in libc6?? Weird huh.
Anybody got any idea why this is?

Chris.

The docs in either PGP package do a good job of explaining the issues,

Moving from Ethernet to modem

1998-06-26 Thread Ted Cabeen
When I set my system up on Debian, it was connected directly to an ethernet
link, so the entire system is set up to expect connections. Now, I've
had to move away from my direct connection and I need to close out all
of the systems that rely on that connection being there, like apache and
xntpd. Which standard programs should I be removing or shutting down?
Eventually, we're planning on setting up a system for ip masquerading and
on-demand ppp dialing by a gateway for the entire apartment, and I don't
want my machine starting or keeping that connection up too much. Thoughts?

Dselect is a very powerful tool, but is really hard to understand. I went
through more than 5 debian installs before I felt reasonably comfortable
with it.

To address that, a new tools is being developed; it will have interfaces
for both the console and for X, and is supposedly easier to understand;
but it will only be available on debian 2.1. Dselect will continue to be
available to those who want it.

There's a standard that defines how this stuff should be organised; it's
the sucessor of the FSSTND 1.2, don't remember the name of it (check the
debian web site). Debian up to version 2.0 complies with the FSSTND 1.2;
debian 2.1 will be compliant with the newer standard, and I think that's
closer to the way RedHat does things.

Re: Apt problems

1998-06-26 Thread Steve Mayer
Chris,

I ran into this same problem after updating to the lastest
libc6_2.0.7r-2. The dependency in the latest apt is looking for
something >= 2.0.7pre1-0.  I guess that it doesn't see 2.0.7r-2 as being
"greaterthan or equal to".

Something was posted on this list a few days ago about this being
fixed in apt_0.0.17 (or some version like that). I have not yet seen
this available anywhere though.

For image editing and manipulation, you want The GIMP. Go to www.gimp.org

well. Search for it in dselect, as I don't know exactly where it's

The GIMP (http://www.gimp.org) should address most, if not all, of your graphics
needs. It is a free GPL'd Photoshop-like image manipulation tool.

As for sound, I recommend CERES SoundStudio, a very nice multitrack wav
editor/sampler/etc. It is commercial, but a demo is available on Sunsite.

As for video, The GIMP has some stuff you might find useful- it will load and
edit many types of animations, such as MPEG, but saving is currently not
supported for all formats yet.

Yup if I have 4 Netscape windows open and I just let them open up the
Debian homepage and don't go to any other sites there is no problem.
Then they only use up about 13Meg of Ram and don't even use any swap.
But what good is being able to open up 50 netscape windows if all I can
do is view the initial Debian homepage? It would be nice to be able to
use this 'tool'. I do believe that when java is loaded my memory usage
jumps enormously. After java has been running for a while it seems that
its "garbage collection" feature which frees up memory doesn't work
because it starts to gobble up memory at the rate of 10Kbytes per
SECOND!!!

I also had another weird occurance when I booted up my machine today
(after properly shutting it down using "shutdown -h now") I recieved the
message
***FILE SYSTEM CHANGED*** and then it listed all the inodes which had
been changed and then for those that I saw it said FIXED after them.
Why should my file system become corrupted???

unstable networking

1998-06-26 Thread Jieyao
Hi,

I wonder if anyone experiences the following.

The system reboots ok. ifconfig and route are runand network set up. If you put
a line in the boot up file with the command 'ifconfig' and 'route' it shows
that
eth0 is up and the routing is set up.
But when you log in, the route is lost. If you run the command 'route' it will
stuck there as if looking forever for something that is not there.
If I run 'ifconfig eth0 down' and then the file /etc/init.d/network everything
is back
to normal.

BTW, I don't think it got anything to do with logging in, I just need to log in
to
see things and run commands.

What could be wrong?

OK, you seemed to have arrived at the conclusion that Java is at fault.

How about you find one Java page that will do this. Fire up a fresh
Netscape, open one browser window, go to that one page, and let it sit
there untouched and prove that it is gobbling memory.

Then, tell us what that page is. Then, a whole bunch of us can try it out.
I can try it on other platforms too, for curiosity (IRIX, Solaris).

Although nobody seems to have seen this problem, I bet nobody doubts that
a page with Java applets could do this. Java in Linux Netscape has been
getting better, but still does weird things.

How do you know the route is "lost"? Typing `route' will result in a

(`netstat -rn' does the same thing and has the added benefit of being in

If `route -n' doesn't show anything, then yes, you've got a problem.

Well I I don't know for sure. What I know is before I do anything, it takes

And not only that, external network can't reach it until I rerun the network

I'm at work, so I won't be able to try this on Linux until tonight.
Most likely other people will beat me to it. I'll try Solaris 2.6 this
afternoon.

Re: 56K modem

1998-06-26 Thread Jens B. Jorgensen
ISAPNP won't pick it up because ISAPNP only works for ISA card. Your card is
PCI.
I've never heard of a PCI modem before. I can't say whether or not any kernel
supports or doesn't support it. The Hardware-HOWTO in my beta Hamm system
doesn't
indicate any support for PCI modems. If the device still acts like a 16550A UART
then you can probably configure it just by getting the IO and IRQ info and
passing that to setserial. If it doesn't then kernel support would have to be
written.

All you need to do is boot a floppy (you gotta make a image of the

It depends on the tape and if your drive supports hardware
compression. I used dump for 90m (2GB) Tapes with hardware
compression the following way:

# The dump level is the first and only parameter to this script

LEVEL=$1
TAPESIZE=$((3200*1024))
FILE_SYSTEMS="/ /opt /usr /var /home"

mt rewind
for i in ${FILE_SYSTEMS}
do
  dump ${LEVEL}Bf ${TAPESIZE} /dev/tape $i
done

There are krb4 packages on nonus.debian.org. FWIW, I was using the
krb4 compatibility libraries with krb5 for a while and things worked
reasonably well. (You can link with -lkrb4 -lkrb5 instead of -lkrb
-ldes and your krb4 applications will still work.)

Samba: password for mapping network drives

1998-06-26 Thread Brian Morgan
I'm running the nmbd and smbd Samba daemons, and having trouble mapping
a network drive on my windows machine to any of my mounted drives. I've
tried the following ways of connecting using windows' map utility (i.e.
in explorer):

\\debian\hda# (where # = appropriate drive partition)
\\debian\usr (or \root, \var, or \usr)

In either case, the map utility prompts me for a password to connect to
these resources. I've tried the root password, and all the passwords
for individual users, but it always comes back and says, "the password
is incorrect, please try again." Is there another password that I'm not
aware of that I need to be entering here, or another daemon I'm not yet
running to be able to map a network drive in this way? The man pages
didn't provide as much help as I wished.

running hamm, 2.0.33 kernel\

Brian

PS: apologies on posting that ZDnet article earlier. In the future,
I'll only post the address to such articles (if they're worth it).
Thanks again, everyone for being patient with a newbie.

Is Netscape Navigator really only for 16-bit color?

1998-06-26 Thread Chip Grandits
I've installed Netscape Communicator v4.05 on my bo system running Xwindows
with the FVWM manager. I don't have any Motif or Motif clones. When I attempt
to browse to a page which uses Java, Netscape just crashes immediately and goes
away. (No harm to anything else - as far as I can tell). The one thing I
turned up from my own research is to ensure that Moz_2.zip is in a particular
directory ( I think /usr/local/netscape - whatever it said that's where it is
on my system). Does anyone know why it's going down? Do I need some
additional Java Support Packages besides that which comes with Netscape? Do I
need another archive utility for moz_2.zip. Is there a particular log file I
can look at to get more info?

-Thank You,
Chip Grandits

P.S.
Does anyone know why I have to use 16-bit color depth to have the colors in the
Communicator Applications come out right? If I use 24-bit color the Icons and
other images that are part of Communicator come out in Black and Gray. (Except
for Netscape NetHelp which works fine in 24-bit color)

I think there should be a requirement to mention these kinds of unusual
dependencies in the description seen in dselect (and eventually apt). bin86
is mentioned in the kernel-source-xxx descriptions. Another example: the
configure script that comes with fetchmail is written in python. There is
no mention of this dependency anywhere. Fetchmail itself doesn't require
python, but it isn't obvious from running the config script that it needs
python (it just says file missing). Not untill you guess that the config
script really is a script and load it into an editor/viewer and look at it
do you see the problem.

Two things to check:
1. Make sure you have a share name in the smb.conf such that the
filesystem you are attempting to mount is accessible through
samba. There are various examples in the default smb.conf
already.
2. Make sure your smb password is up-to-date by running
'smbpasswd '. This won't be needed when PAM support is
readded to samba. See /usr/doc/samba/README.debian for further
details.

There is extensive information in /usr/doc/samba that is not provided
in the manpages. Hope this helps!

Interesting. Since the system has to go down for the change, you might want to
rip the case open and pop a floppy in there for the first bit of the install,
then take it out again...

If that isn't an option, you _might_ be able to juggle your partitions around
in the right way and pull it off... The only think I can suggest is to hack
your lilo.conf to load the debian kernel, initrd and rootdisk from your
existing slackware partition, and then... something. Because debian wants to
partition/format it's drives before it needs other stuff you'd have to put on
the drive. If you have anough RAM, you might want to turn your swap partition
into an ext2fs, drop the debian rescue & drivers disk images on it, hack your
bootloader, then reformat all your partitions _except_ the swap, install your
ethernet card driver from the drivers disk on the old swap partition and install
the base package over your 'net connection. But, since I just came up with that,
you might not. :) Theoretically, it should work, but ymmv.

I saw something similar, it may indeed be the java support that is the
cause. I sat with top running in one window and NS, looking at
netbuyer.com, running in another window. I didn't do anything, yet the size
of the netscape process in top's display continuously grew in memory size.
It went from 20033 to 22000 in about 6-7 mins. It never went down. The
same thing didn't happen sitting on a non-java page.

There are a couple of NeoMagic ones (one DFSG free but not all that
good, the other not DFSG free (due to NDAs), but better (by RedHat)).
I've e-mailed the X maintainer about this and he says that he will
package them, but wants to get X ready for the Debian 2 release first.
Sounds fair enough :-)

Re: debian-user-digest Digest V98 #536

1998-06-26 Thread Gregory Guthrie
I just did an upgrade bo --> hamm using autoup.sh.

Amazing. But, there are a number of steps which left me cold; and flipping
a coinn for the right action.

1) during the autoup it had seeral "conflicts", adn it was not clear to me
if I needed to do anything about them. E.g. I think it tried to remove
something that depended on Perl, but I had perl installed, or something...
"dependency problems .. libwww-perl depends on Perl, but perl is not
installed.
  ... libnet

Anyway, there was no clear indication if all was OK, if it was a comment,
or if some remedial action was needed (later).,

2) After update, it says "now use dselect to upgrade the rest of your
system", then reboot.

?? How do I know what to upgrade? I would like to say; "whatever needs an
upgrade, if I have it installed, do it."
Instead, I had to go through dselect, look at hundreds of packages, try to
remember which I had selected, and decide if they need update. Am I missing
something here?

Re: Samba: password for mapping network drives

1998-06-26 Thread Brian Morgan
Can you help me with that share name thing? Does that go in the global
section? I've checked the man page for smb.conf, and still couldn't find
anything about this parameter. I've set the workgroup for the appropriate
windows workgroup name. Is this what you were talking about? I've got the
password correct, but now the message comes up
"The share name was not found. Make sure you typed it correctly."

Thanks again,

Brian

Radius Questions

1998-06-26 Thread Norbert Veber
Hi..

I work for a local isp, and am one of the sysadmins.
We use merrit radius, and want to switch over to cistron. Even though
neither of these are part of debian, we are using debian systems :)
I realize that this has nothing to do with debian-devel, but I thought that
since this is a bit of a more advanced topic, I might find more help there
(this is kind of urgent). Please do not cc replies to debian-devel.

Questions:

1. We have a group of users that want a 'clean' internet connection. What
this means is that they go through a proxy which filters out bad web
pages. What we want is for these users to go through a different gateway
than everyone else (that way they have to use the proxy, or they cant
look at any web pages). Is there a way to do this with pppd and radius?

2. We have another group of users that are allowed to login only during
certain times of the day, and a group that has email-only accounts (and
they cant login at all). Both of these have their own group in
/etc/groups. Can this be setup with cistron radius without changing the
   source?

3. Today I was trying to get portslave (the cistron radius client) to act like a
getty. We use cyclades boards for this. No matter what I did, it just
wouldnt work. Portslave would run from init, it would initialize the
modem, and just sit there waiting for OK. If I tell it not to wait for
the OK (the modem does send it btw), then it gets past that part, and
waits for a RING, but it never gets that either, and therefore never sends
the ATA. It looks like it can send data to the modem, but not receive.
I know that the init string gets sent to the modem because if for example I
enable auto answer in the init string, the modem auto answers.
Any ideas on what could cause this? We really like the portslave client
because of features like pap, and countless others, but its useless if it
doesnt work.. I was able to get it to work with our port servers which
just telnet into the linux box, telnetd then just uses portslave as its
login program, but it just doesnt want to work with the modems. I started
thinking that maybe there is something wrong with the version of portslave
   I have (portslave-1.16.tar.gz). Any ideas?

PS. We have the cistron radius server (1.5.4.2) working perfectly with our
old client. (except for the email only accounts and the such..)

RE: Linux system Instalation - CRC Error

1998-06-26 Thread Dennis Dai
I would recommend using loadlin to boot directly from harddisk in this
case. All you need to have is a small DOS partition which you can
repartition later. But keep a DOS partition is not a bad idea in case
anything goes wrong.

Just my 2 cents.

ppp PAP question

1998-06-26 Thread Wakko Warner
I have 2 machines (well, 1 machine 1 isp). I'd like to use PAP between
them. in pap-secrets I have:

wakko lwts...
wakko bristol ...

"lwts" is my computer at work
"bristol" is the name I received from my ISP.

Doesn't matter how I invoke pppd, the results are the same. It will always
use the first line (I'm using the default pap-secrets file. the only mods
were removing the entry at the end and replacing it with the 2 above).

The line I used to invoke pppd:
pppd connect 'chat "" atdt### CONNECT' user wakko /dev/modem 115200

I see no other way to get pppd to send the correct user name. Obviously,
I'm not going to use my machine name and I'm not going to have my machine
name as my ISP login name. It seems that it can't get the remote host name
or something... I don't fully (or half way) understand PAP.

Any ideas?

key repeat lost on xserver change

1998-06-26 Thread Havoc Pennington
Hi,

I just installed the I128 server for a new video card, and now keys do not
repeat when they're held down. I'm using the same XF86Config except for
modelines and card differences.

Is this a change in the new X packages? Can it be configured somewhere? Or a
bug in the server?

Thanks!

man pppd says:

remotename name
Set the assumed name of the remote system for
  authentication purposes to name.

So: a the pap-secrets line should look like:

wakko myisp secretpassword

username on remote system = wakko
password for remote system = secretpassword
remote-id of remote system (arbitrary) = myisp

and you have to add "remotename myisp" to your pppd line.

Ciao,
Martin
