Package: diskless
Version: 0.3.12
Severity: wishlist

Like when dpkg presents a new conffile for replacement, allowing the
user to get a diff would help decision.

Maybe a "Merge" option using "sdiff -o" would be nice as well.

Package: diskless
Version: 0.3.17
Severity: normal

There are a few files in /etc that may have a space in the file name
(I noticed it with '/etc/kde2/colors/40 Colors' from the kdelibs3 package
originally). Those files always show up as 'changed' if diskless-newhost
is rerun on an existing diskless machine.

Version: 0.3.17
Severity: normal

Hi,

the diskless-image-* packages have eth0 hardcoded in /sbin/init, which
is a problem, if one wants to boot from eth1 :)

diskless-image-{simple,secure}/init:
IP=`ifconfig | grep -A1 eth0 | grep -v eth0 | sed 's/^.*inet
addr:\([0-9\.]\+\).*$/\1/'`

The following snippet is more robust (and gives a better error message
in case it still fails). The explicit test for an interface is not
needed, since at that point there should be only one interface up,
AFAICT (the one set up by the kernel). In (the unlikely) case there
is another one up (say, if there are two, and for each a DHCP request
succeeds), the first one is taken here:

-
IP="$(ifconfig | sed -n -e '/^[[:space:]]*inet
addr:\([[:digit:].]*\).*$/{s//\1/p;q;}')"
if [ -n "$IP" ]
then
echo "Client IP address is $IP"
else
echo "$0: could not determine IP address. Bailing out."
exit 1
fi
-

I looked around for a better way to obtain the client's IP address,
but couldn't find one...

BTW: Is there a reason why *-secure/init and *-simple/init are not the
same? It looks like they've gone out of sync at some point.

Cheers,
M/

Greetings,

It's a bit of a pain to go around running diskless-newhost for every
single host when setting up a cluster or changing the configuration.
Especially with a lot of machines.

The attached script (the "patch") could go into
/usr/lib/update-cluster/diskless.updatelist and do that automatically,
the admin would only need to run update-cluster-regenerate diskless.
The /etc/default/diskless file, which doesn't exist yet, could be
configured (e.g. via debconf) to customize CLUSTERXML, IMAGEROOT and
HOSTROOT.

Of course this would have to be added to the documentation too, I'd be
glad to make a patch for this.

What do you think?

Zeen,

Greetings,

When creating or updating a host image, /etc/fstab is always created the
same way. This ignores customizations that could be made in /etc/fstab
in the root image, such as a local disk or swap partition, an alternate
server for /home, or other NFS entries.

It would be nice if this could be generated from root's /etc/fstab
instead, simply adding the NFS root, /etc, /var, /tmp and
/var/lib/diskless entries, instead of using only these.

I suppose whether this is a bug or a wishlist is a matter of opinion,
feel free to change the severity if you feel that's appropriate.

Zeen,

Package: diskless
Version: 0.3.17
Severity: normal

Hi!

There's wrong information in the diskless package's documentation, chapter 2
reads:
It requires base.tgz created by createbasetgz script,
and one of the diskless-image packages.
As of writing this, the only diskless-image package
that has been tested is diskless-image-simple
(diskless-image-simple_0.3.0_all.deb).

That's wrong, isn't it? There's also a ..-secure package.

Regards,

Onno

Package: diskless-image-simple
Version: 0.3.18.0.4
Severity: normal

Hello, I would like to remark a possible situation that may arise
when using local filesystems under diskless. It may cause data loss
  and filesystem corruption.

On booting the diskless node, the shared default/root image is
mounted readonly. Then, the node's private default/IP/etc directory
is mounted on top of the shared /etc directory, which results in the
node being able to write its /etc/mtab file. On reboot, remote
filesystems are unmounted, then the local ones.

Let us suppose a modification to the /etc/fstab template has been
done in order to mount a local filesystem of the node (say /tmp). On
boot, filesystems are mounted and they are reflected on the node's
private /etc/mtab. However, on reboot remote filesystems are unmounted
first, so the node's private /etc is unmounted and the shared root and
its /etc directory becomes visible again (the root directory is
obviously not unmounted even if remote). This leaves the local
filesystems mounted but the shared /etc/mtab visible. The contents of
the shared /etc/mtab are not reliable and surely do not contain any
reference to any local filesystem. When init.d/umountfs runs, 'mount'
does not see the local filesystems mounted in the node, and the system
is rebooted without unmounting them, which may lead to serious data
  loss and filesystem corruption.

Two solutions come to my mind:
* Editing the shared image /etc/mtab to include the local
  mounted filesystems.
* Making a symbolic link from the shared /etc/mtab to
/proc/mounts, the kernel's view of mounted filesystems.

On both cases, unmounting the private /etc would leave a /etc/mtab
file with the local mounted partitions. However, since /proc/mounts
is generated on the fly by the kernel, the second solution would work
out of the box. I have tried it and it does not cause any problems on
the node (on boot or reboot), and neither it does on the server system
while chroot()ing to the shared image to do administrative tasks.
Even mounting /proc in the jail is no problem, since /proc/mounts is
not writable. The problem is that chroot()ing into the jail makes
'mount' unusable until /proc is mounted in it. However, working in
tha jail without /proc mounted makes equally no sense. 'mount' is not
frequently used in such a jail, anyway.

I know this is a rare case, but the solution could avoid dangerous
situations and, in any case, the shared image's /etc/mtab makes no
sense in the state it is left when the shared image is build (neither
does the corresponding node template, buit it does not matter since it
  is cleared on boot).

  Thanks,
  Ivan

I tried to create this file:
_imgdir_/root/usr/lib/diskless-image/template/etc/network/interfaces

It gets copied when I execute diskless-newhost to create a new host, but
if I execute it to reconfigure a host that already exists, the file does
not get copied.

Also, it is not being processed by M4. I tried to include a host_ip and
host<[]> and this command get copied verbatim.

This configuration of the interfaces file is not necessary, but I tougth
it should work.

Package: diskless
Version: 0.3.18.0.5
Severity: grave

We've tried to setup diskless /diskless-image-simple and:

1) There seems to be an inconsistency in the naming scheme. Sometimes
configs are taken from the master from /etc/diskless-host (which does not
exist) and in some version from /etc/diskless-image... on the
client
only diskless-image is checked in /sbin/init , so booting a client fails.

2) If one fixes this one realizes that in /sbin/init only the /etc
filesystem gets mounted all the rest (/dev /var /tmp) the client is
supposed to deal with via the init.orig , i.e.
/etc/init.d/rcS -> /etc/rcS.d/S35mountall script. However that one does not
mount anything nfs related (nonfs nosmb etc in the very top of that file).
I suggest to mount everything in the /sbin/init wrapper like below (to not
having to modify the standard S35mountall script etc).
Furthermore the WARNING: master... is almost invisible as the system boots
to fast, so there should be a timeout like the sleep 5 inserted below
(as this is only for administration it won't delay the standard client
boot process). Also if the /etc/diskless-image/config does not exist or
the system cannot mount any /var /dev /tmp scripts for a client the system
should wait some minutes and then halt instead of go on booting...

---snip---
# Don't do anything special if root is rw (ie master system).
if touch /test-rw 2>/dev/null
then
rm /test-rw 2>/dev/null
echo "WARNING: master system installed" >&2
sleep 5
exec /sbin/init.orig $*
echo "FATAL ERROR: exec /sbin/init.orig failed" >&2
exit 1
fi

# Try and find configuration file
if [ -f /etc/diskless-image/config ]
then
# Load config file
. /etc/diskless-image/config

# Get IP address, need to mount /proc first
mount -n none /proc -t proc

IP=`ifconfig | grep -A1 eth0 | grep -v eth0 | sed 's/^.*inet
addr:\([0-9\.]\+\).*$/\1/'`
echo "Client IP address is $IP"

# Mount client's /etc directory
echo -n "Mounting NFS-root directories..."
echo -n "etc.."
mount -n $nfsserver:/$nfshostsdir/$IP/etc /etc -orw,nolock >/dev/null

# Update entries in /etc/mtab
rm -f /etc/mtab~ /etc/nologin >/dev/null
: > /etc/mtab >/dev/null
mount -o remount / >/dev/null
mount -o remount /etc >/dev/null
echo -n "proc.."
mount -o remount /proc >/dev/null

I want to change my nfs home for /homenew instead of /home. As I
understood, I should call diskless-newimage to reconfigure everything
instead of messing around with the image files... So I tried to execute
diskless-newimage and that happened.

Package: diskless
Version: 0.3.18.0.5
Severity: wishlist
Tags: l10n, patch

While translating the debconf file diskless_0.3.18.0.5, I encountered =20=

the following typos, which I thought you might like to eliminate in a =20=

future release.
_

1.
po:5
auto: =E2=91=A4 Type: string
auto: =E2=91=A4 Description
reference: =E2=91=A4 ../diskless-image-secure.templates:12 =
../diskless-image-=20
simple.templates:12
Original: =E2=8C=980=09
This specifies the address of the central NFS server where to mount
partitions from on the clients. It is recommended that this contain =20
the IP
address, although this is not required.

(I suggest:
"This specifies the address of the central NFS server on which =20
clients will mount partitions"
or
"This specifies the address of the central NFS server on which will =20
be mounted partitions from clients"
also
"Including the IP address is recommended, but not required."

This is fairly complex English, so please don't feel bad about it. ;) )

2.
po:9
auto: =E2=91=A4 Type: string
auto: =E2=91=A4 Description
reference: =E2=91=A4 ../diskless-image-secure.templates:27 =
../diskless-image-=20
simple.templates:27
Original: =E2=8C=980=09
This option specifies the path which will be used by the clients to =20
their
private read-write directories. The IP address will be appended to =20
the end
of this path.

(to access their private read-write directories?)

3.
po:11
auto: =E2=91=A4 Type: string
auto: =E2=91=A4 Description
reference: =E2=91=A4 ../diskless-image-secure.templates:35 =
../diskless-image-=20
simple.templates:35
Original: =E2=8C=980=09
This specifies where /home on the clients should be mounted from your =20=

NFS
server. Examples are /home, /tftpboot/home, etc.

(You don't use "for example" or "e.g." with "etc." One or the other, =20
not both. ;)
With "e.g." or "for example", you're saying "here are a few =20
possibilities".
With "etc.", you're saying "and the rest".
Thus you're saying in this string, "Here are a few possible home =20
directories, and the rest." It doesn't fit. So you can say:
"For example, /home, /tftpboot/home."
or
"( /home, /tftpboot/home etc.)"
;)

4.
You have a pair of duplicate strings, bar the capital D in Debian. =20
You may want to remove one. ;)

.po:3
auto: =E2=91=A4 Type: string
auto: =E2=91=A4 Description
reference: =E2=91=A4 ../diskless-image-secure.templates:4
Original: =E2=8C=980=09
This option specifies the default name for the master host. This is =20
required
to be setup by some debian packages. It should have an entry in the DNS.

po:22
auto: =E2=91=A4 Type: string
auto: =E2=91=A4 Description
reference: =E2=91=A4 ../diskless-image-simple.templates:4
Original: =E2=8C=980=09
This option specifies the default name for the master host. This is =20
required
to be setup by some Debian packages. It should have an entry in the DNS.

Package: diskless
Version: 0.3.18.0.5

I installed the diskless package on a server and succeded to boot a
diskless client successfully;

I successfully managed to start my diskless client (through PXE and
recompiled kernel with appropriate options). The root file system is
mounted as expected by the client though NFS. On my server, I did not
chage the defaults proposed by both commands 'diskless-newimage' and
'diskless-newhost' at installation time:
- the root file system for myclient to NFS mount is :
/var/lib/diskless/default/root
- the customized '/etc' '/tmp' and '/var' directories for my diskless
client (with IP adress being 10.1.0.4) are stored in :
/var/lib/diskless/default/10.1.0.4

However, during the client boot, the cutomized directories (
/var/lib/diskless/default/10.1.0.4/etc,
/var/lib/diskless/default/10.1.0.4/var and
/var/lib/diskless/default/10.1.0.4/tmp are not mounted as /etc, /var,
/tmp). I believe they should.

I realize this is due to the fact that I boot I mount the NFS root file
system with read-write option. I do this through my SYSLINUX/PXE boot
script (otpion 'rw' of append insctruction in the PXE file below :

default diskless

label diskless
kernel bzImage
append rw root=/dev/nfs
nfsroot=10.1.0.3:/var/lib/diskless/default/root ip=dhcp

label local
localboot 0

When I mount the NFS root file system read-only, then the customized
directories are mounted for my diskless client as expected.

I do not see where this kind of logic is implemented. I believe the
customized directories should be mounted even if the root file system is
mounted read-write.

Package: diskless
Version: 0.3.9
Severity: normal

Hi,
Once again, I have found the following problem with the new
diskless package:

diskless-newhost:
default/IP/var/yp is still missing Makefile, nicknames

default/IP/var/log/wtmp is still missing for slave diskless nodes.

Also, on nfs server, default/root/var/lib/dpkg should be exported
individually.

mount var/lib/dpkg should be after the line of var in fstab template
file. otherwise overrided by mount /var. I suggest to put it after
/tmp(all rw dirs have been mounted)

also, added option "rsize=8192,wsize=8192" to fstab for higher
performance.

I also attached the template fstab file I am using the exports
file.

Thanks and regards,

Min

aeromail has been removed from Debian because no one adopted it since
January 2004, and because it is unusable with the default configuration
of PHP. ilohamail provides a lightweight alternative. For details,

The configuration file of aeromail, config.inc, should be somewhere in /etc/.
It could possibly be symlinked from the current location. (Current situation is
not policy-compliant)

aeromail has been removed from Debian because no one adopted it since
January 2004, and because it is unusable with the default configuration
of PHP. ilohamail provides a lightweight alternative. For details,

The current function decode_header_string() in file global.inc is unable to
handle decoding of multiple elements. It checks only for one "=?"
substring at the beginning
of the text to decode. If there are multiple elements to decode, the
function fails to decode the subsequent
elements.

As a suggestion, I would replace function decode_header_string() with
the following:

//--
function decode_header_string($hed_str)
{

$output = "Empty String";

if($hed_str)
{

$element=imap_mime_header_decode($hed_str);
$output = "";
for($i=0; $i < count($element); $i++) {
$output .= $element[$i]->text;
}

}
return $output;
}
//-

The function above appears to decode the elements correctly.

I'm using debian 3.0, kernel 2.4.18-k7 and php4 v. 4.1.2-6

Aeromail can't login. It seems it doesn't work with the version of PHP
currently in sarge. The problem is that it uses $PHP_AUTH.. variables
instead of $_SERVER["$PHP_AUTH..."].

Here is a patch which fixes it for me:

Hi,

If you install the latest version of uw-imapd in testing it creates a
self-signed SSL certificate. When you try to login to this IMAP
server using Aeromail it tries to authenticate the certificate (even
with non-SSL connections) and fails. But it doesn't produce *any*
output mentioning this fact, all you get is exactly the same behaviour
as if you'd entered an incorrect password.

The PHP function imap_last_error() does return a message indicating
this ("Certificate failure for localhost: self signed certificate:
/O=University of Washington IMAP
daemon/OU=delysid/CN=delysid.bltc.net/[EMAIL PROTECTED]"),
but that's not being treated any differently by Aeromail to "Can not
authenticate to IMAP server: AUTHENTICATE LOGIN failed".

It would help people track down problems if Aeromail differentiated
between error messages and/or passed them back to the user.

Cheers,
Mark

PS. I mistakenly filed bug #250389 first before tracking down the
true nature of this bug.

that resulted was a fugue of improvisation, by fleets of small boats that set

again struggling with a catastrophe that caught the nation unprepared and left
citizens dead and grieving. The ground zero ceremony paused for moments of

leading the relief effort, was recalled to Washington on Thursday night by
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. Some people stocked up on
groceries during the weekend even though Wilmington, on the coast of southeast
North Carolina, had breezy, partly cloudy weather, said Warren Lee, emergency
management director for New Hanover County."One of the things we talked about

Bug#311597: Busy at work packaging anyterm

2005-09-13 Thread Roberto C. Sanchez
Phil,

I am busy working on packaging anyterm. I was wondering if you could
look at the desicussion we had on #debian-devel tonight. Essentially,
we need to figure out a better way to make the login process happen.
Also, why does anygetty need to write to utmp instead of letting login
do that?

Please let me know what you think, as I would really like to get this
packaged up and in the official archive.

-Roberto
