Install CD won't boot Cube
I just painstakingly downloaded the three Debian install .iso's and burned them to CD. Put in the first disk and restarted while pressing "c." Result (white on a black screen): Wrong partition 1 signature config file need 613 bytes Debian Gnu Linux PowerPC potato Boot _ (here I type an 'L') Loading kernel Wrong partition signature Elf32 Kernel loaded loading ramdisk wrong partition 1 signature (change to black on gray screen): ...K copying OF device tree ...done calling quiesce ... booting... Then it freezes right there. Anyone seen/fixed this? -ms -- Many have Montana envy ... the lucky get to live here! Where to find these settings?
OK, Woody running well on stock 8600. I can't remember the config file to allow apt-get to use unstable directories (ie. to get newer versions than stable). Also can I get back to dual boot via BootX? I must've not quite caught that the install was going to take over booting with no options. I have Mac OS on one internal drive, Woody on the other, of course Mac OS gives me BootX' Mac or Linux boot option, but my current setup bypasses that somehow. -ms -- Many have Montana envy ... the lucky get to live here! Frozen cursor after logout; CLI escape
Two questions now that I've upgraded. Debian always goes to a graphic login. I've tried changing /etc/inittab to runlevel 3, 4 and 5 but have never gotten a text login. How do I? I have been using (since root obviously can't log in graphically) control-option-F1 to get a command line to use as root, but can't figure out how to toggle back out of that (to the user login) and when I try to log in as my user, the screen tells me there's already an xserver running (the existing graphic login screen). Tried doing control-option-F1 (hoping for a toggle), command z, command x, etc. But can't seem to leave that screen. Also, whenever I do use graphic login to start a user session, and then logout to the graphic login screen, may cursor is *always* frozen, even though it just worked in the previous session. X won't start
I've just installed Debian on an 8600 (upgraded to G4-400). When I boot, I get a good bootup process, then 4 gray screens flash before I get a prompt (text login). when I ask to startx, I get lots of screen resolutions and frequencies running by (they all say "deleted") then (paraphrasing somewhat) frambefuffer device: control video memory 4095k 0x94800010 type 0 type_aux 0 bit per pixel 8 hardware acceleration none no driver support for hardware acceleration bpp = 8 depth = 8 bits per RGB 8 Fatal server error cannot open mouse (no such device) So I think it's a mouse problem. I have a standard Apple ADB mouse and a Logitech USB Orbit. They're usually both plugged in, but I get the same result even when each is plugged in by itself. As Debian loads, it actually recognizes (registers?) the Logitech, because I see its name go by during bootup. I do not recall ever having the opportunity to configure video or mouse (one of which I imagine is the problem) except that I told the installer not to try to automatically do video. That's because the same thing happened on my *first* install, yesterday, when I *did* allow it to automagically do video config ... I've also tried unchecking "force video driver" in BootX (1.2.3) options. Same result. The install is from the standard, stable .iso images I downloaded last fall --- (2.2r4 or 2.2r2? I think?) I have tried typing Xconfigurator Xconfig /usr/X11/XF86Config-4 /usr/X11/XF86Config /etc/XF86Config-4 and every other idea I can get from searching the site. No dice, it always returns "no such file." Where do I find/fix the config to get past this? TIA -ms -- Many have Montana envy ... the lucky get to live here! You'll need to edit /etc/apt/sources.list to point apt-get to woody instead of potato. To put it simply, you just have to substitute all occurrences of "potato" with "woody". Yup, that worked!!! Looks like my keyboard is *way* scambled now, though. When I started X and ran a terminal, the keys did not match what I was typing. And it looks like my resolution is 640 by 480, but it's trying to display something much bigger, I'm missing some of the screen. I was going to say that I hoped I didn't lose the progress I've made ... but not sure that any has been made. Although I remember that the video was weird in woody too, like there was more on the bottom of the screen I couldn't see. -ms -- Many have Montana envy ... the lucky get to live here! Check out http://www.debian.org/ports/powerpc/keycodes Well I kinda went nuts and did a clean install of 2.2r6 and X worked right out of the gate. Hmmm... Any specific reason to do that? It seems like a big step backwards to me.. Me too, but (under woody) my keycodes were a mess, display seemed off (of course it seems to be off now, too) and Chris pointer to solve the keycodes problem could *not* be accessed on my second machine (Mac OS X) although I could get it to the point of www.debian.org/ports/powerpc ... don't know why Since I could still work on the G4 while letting Debian install on the 8600, I figured what the heck ... Oh yeah, now I remember the main reason ... I just went ahead and *did* reupgrade the 8600 from 2.2r6 to woody. When I type startx it says xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): no server "X" in PATH Use the -- option, or make sure that /usr/X11R6/bin is in your path and that "X" is a program or a link to the right type of server for your display. Possible server names include: XFree 86XFree86 displays giving up. xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server xinit: No such process (errno 3): server error. ??? -ms -- Many have Montana envy ... the lucky get to live here!
