Basically, you'll need to get d-i source code and grub-installer source code. Build both (the last with the applied patch provided by Robert) and add it in localudebs before build the mini.iso. Burn it on a CD and test. Thanks. But as I said, I'm not a developer (for lack of time -- I have a day job, and I'd like to keep it!) What I can do is test things. If someone who understands Otavio's description of the task is willing to make an .iso that I can burn to a CD, I'll be happy to test it and provide detailed reports on my success or failures. I will build you a netboot image, which include this patched version, this way you can test it. I do believe this will include a mini-iso kind of thing. 2.6.18 on sid boots with BootX ?
Hi all, just checking . The current kernel 2.6.18 present in Debian Unstable ( sid ) is able to boot a Beige G3 with BootX ? I have one of this, and is working fine as gateway/firewall of one of my costumers, but I will personally in his place to upgrade some other things, so I could take the chance and update this machine too ?!? thanks in advance Fábio Rabelo -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". [Fwd: Re: if you care about debian on powerpc, please react ...]
Sorry, but I disagree completely !!! I am an occasional user of Debian PPC too, just 3 machines right now . But I listen to this list for more than 4 years, and the ONLY one who contribute with usable patches do d-i IS exactly Mr. Sven Luther !!! Without him there is no such thing called "Debian PPC" !!!! Fábio Rabelo --- Begin Message --- Hi to all, I am only a casual user of Debian on the PPC and hardly in a position to judge, to opinionate or to choose. It is easy to choose for the first one that speaks, but as my mother used to say: "when two are fighting, two are to blame". Maybe my mother had the kind of simple wisdom that all involved in this conflict could begin with. Conflicts of this kind in volunteer driven projects are not uncommon and this one will most likely not be the last. They stem from the same desire and urge to deliver the best result possible, which is great. But when there is no agreement the discussion can be a heated one and in the end harm the project in which all parties have an emotional stake. This project is no different. Simply put, if a conflict can not be resolved peacefully, if no substantiated blame is available and if all involved threaten the future perspective of Debian PPC, then I see only one solution for the community: to remove both parties from the project. It might be painfull in the short run, but highly beneficial in the long run. I wish you all a lot of wisdom Jan Stedehouder Sven Luther schreef: Hi, ... As some of you may have noticed, there is an ugly dispute going on between some few d-i team members (Frans Pop and Joey Hess mostly, but Geert and Holger also seem to support them), and which result in a over 6 month old dispute who is not even near to being resolved, despite numerous and various attempts to do so on my part. I have documented this issue somewhat on : http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/FransPopAndOthersVs%2eSvenLutherIssue But despite these numerous attempts on my part to resolve this issue, and the numerous patches and fixes i have provided to not let the powerpc d-i rot and become more broken, there seem to be a clear will on the part of Frans Pop to take the powerpc users hostage in his warfar against me, and there are a number of patches which are now submitted since a few weeks, and which where not applied. As an example let's take the following bug : http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=394971 #394971: rootskel: [powerpc64] load the fan control modules. Which was submited 29 days ago, with a patch and not commited. Furthemore, when i did myself an upload on sunday, which included the patch and fixed the bug report, Frans didn't incorporate the change, but reverted it today. As thus, in the current conditions, i fear for the support of d-i on powerpc for the etch release, and thus the quality of the release. I strongly urge you all to sign the petition to get this issue solved on : http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/FransPopvsSvenLutherIssue/SvenLutherSupport Since you are all kind of held hostage over this petty dispute, by them stopping me to do work on d-i for powerpc, and in general wasting too much time on this matter, time i could spend working generally on the powerpc port. Someone managed to do it ? A Linux box running Debian 3.0r1 with "testing" on aptsources.list The cups is running fine, from windows stations using samba configured extatly as the manual of cups demmands prints fine to a Epson 800 conected to serial port. But when I try to print from a MAC OS 9.22 with laserwhiter8 version 8.6, the printer appears on chooser ok ( with netatalk instaled and papd.conf configured exatly as in cups manual ), the desktop icon is created after an anormal wait ( something like 4 or 5 min ). But whem I try to print, with any aplication, after a very long time waiting or aplication freeses, or a error msg apears, but for too short period to permit read !!! quik 7300 Auto of scan range
Hi all . I am trying to install Sarge on 7300/G3 333 Upgrade/512 MB ram 4 GB HD SCSI This machine are been retired from graphics job in a costumer of mine, so I will try to turn it in a firewall/ftp . The documentation about installing Sarge with BootX in an old world is outdated . The name of files ( kernel and initrd ) are wrong . Passed this issue, the instaler works fine ( realy much better then Woody ! ) . At the very end of install proccess, the instaler warn about Quik, but installs it ( cool ) But after that, in the first boot within Sarge, my monitor just shows a msg "scan ou of range" . The noise from HD sugests the boot is going fine, but I can do anything from that on . I can use bootX in this machine, there are room in HD, but how can I copy a suitable Kernel to MAC OS partition without a normal boot ? Or may be there are a way to bypass the monitor issue ? Any idea ? Fábio Rabelo ps.: sorry for my bad english, I'm a Brasilian, a third world country, forgive me ! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? The Sarge installer is not finished yet, in the first boot the installer setup the apt.sources, and then download any update available , and then I can install anything I want ( like ssh ) so before it can not do anything . The goal is power the machine and never more power off, remove keyboard and mouse and use ssh/webmin to manage everything . Fábio Rabelo

I have two monitors, one Apple 15AV ( in Brasil that monitor was sold with PowerMAC 6500 ) no adapter, this monitor has apple 15 pin connector, And a Sony Multiscan 100SF with adapter bundled with it ( in MAC OS 9 and X this adapter allows me to set all resolutions and frequency the monitor can do, even 1280 x 1024 x 70Hz ) The behavior is the same with both, the only difference is the Apple 15AV do not show the "out of scan range" msg, just remains yellow the led ( when something correct is sent to it the led turns green and, off course, something is displayed ) No third party video card, but I can get a ATI Radeon 7000 PCI to test purposes, it can help ? And, after a boot in the Mac OS 9 ( after a one more failed try, the eleventh in 3 days ! ) I found something in the System profile, it identify the machine as "7500/7600 WGS 8550" and not 7300, probably the motherboard was changed in some service at local apple provider, but I am not shore, but the machine is in fact a 7500/7600 instead 7300 . And yes, no X installed, and it will not be, the intend is use this machine ass firewall/ftp, managing remotely via ssh/webmin, so there are no need of X server .
