Sound problem on >=2.6.9
Hi, With kernels 2.6.9 and 2.6.10 (which have introduced beeps) I have problems with the sound on my Aluminium PowerBook G4 15". (It worked very well with <=2.6.8.) First, the sound is softer than before, for ex. now 80% of sound (as given by pbbuttonsd) is identical to 45% before. Last, during a play (a sound file with xmms or a series a beeps) only the first sound(s), for about 0.5 sec., are loud as before (<=2.6.8), the others are soft. I have (almost) all the packages in testing. You're right : audio-setup : I can play any music, and gnomemeeting can play the little wav file he uses to signal events. permissions : every things is world read/write-able in my snd directory and I'm in the audio group. Anyway, the message also appears as root. I recall checking with strace that the accessed file was rw. device not busy : the message appeared after a fresh boot without any other application using sound, and I'm not using kde (so no arts daemon getting the device, I would have killed it anyway) > >> By the way, seeing that I had asked the advices of the gurus, gnomemeeting >> get afraid and decided to work this morning ! > >Something has been changed, most likely. No. I don't mean I had to put the micro near the speaker. I mean that the micro being on the screen frame, it is effectively located 15centimeters from the right speaker. So there is some larsen. >Can't be much wrong if you're hearing >sound of even limited volume. It's been 3 years now that I'm using my ibook on linux, with mp3... I think I finally see where the problem was. In alsamixer (the text version, not the gui), you can change input source between line and mic. It was displayed on mic. But the fact of switching it to line and back seems to have unlocked the micro. Now it is recording correctly. So to summarize, after a fresh boot, I launch alsamixer, unmute the DRC, switch input source to line, then back to mic. And gnomemeeting seems to be working (at least the "test setting" window). The presence of artsd does not seem to be a problem (as long as it yield the sound card, I believe) No need to be root (I know that's obvious) Cedric -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". usb_audio in 2.4?
Hi all- Working on what I need to know to build a 2.6 kernel with ALSA drivers, but in the meantime, I'm fiddling with the drivers included in the stock Woody distro. I had a question about the use of the USB audio driver. When I installed Woody, I selected both dmasound_pmac and usb_audio in modconf. Currently, dma_sound is loaded before usb_audio. If I have my USB audio device turned on, dmesg returns the messages listed at the bottom of my email. dmasound works but USB audio doesn't. This with an M-Audio Quattro box... Should I be loading only the USB driver and not both at once? If so what's the best way to switch drivers? modconf? modprobe? I'd like to be able to switch back and forth between Mac sound and the Quattro box. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! In laymen terms (myself being the laymen), dynamic range control is a way to control the loudness dynamically. An example will clarify... You are watching a movie and most of the dialect is soft spoken so you have the volume raised fairly high. On occasion there are massive gun fights and because the volume is so loud, the gun fights are unbearably loud. With DRC this would be adjusted dynamically so that the two were seemingly within the same range of volume. How could DRC range be disabled? I'm sorry, I wasn't specific enough. I meant to *mute* the DRC mixer which sort-of disables DRC, or at least makes the "DRC Range" mixer unnecassry. I can't prove better information to you, maybe someone else may... There will be a check box along with a range control slider inside your mixer (i.e. gnome-alsamixer). The gnome-volume control doesn't seem to have this option (at least here on my machine). I'm not sure all sound cards have this feature. A few have posted stating they didn't see this on newer models of powerbooks. -- "Imagination is more important than knowledge." - Albert Einstein signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

I guess what we're talking about is a compressor. It would be easier if uniform language were used. I had a compressor/sustainer special effects pedal that did this same effect (on guitar). What it did is chop off the peaks and lows so as to give a uniform level. Always wanted to try it on a bass, as the dynamic range between the low E and G always bothered me (I'd go back and forth), but never got rid of it before trying it on bass. I imagine the compressor part is what does the levelling off. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

mouseemu replacement in pbbuttonsd
Hi, my problem with the touchpad is, while typing hitting on the touchpad and this generates a click and my cursor jumps away. I know mouseemu exists. But pbbuttonsd already watches for key events. Isn't it possible to make it switch the mode of the touchpad, while typing? initrd kernels and mklinux booter
I've a couple of nubus powermacs currently running stock 2.4.21 with the mkLinux booter. I'd like to bring them up to a 2.6 series kernel. I've got two-1/2 questions: - Is there a stock kernel I can use or do I have to roll my own? - Is initrd supported? If so, what boot options ("mach_options") do I specify? Thanks! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Finally - a breakthrough !! ;-) The 2.4 kernel, even with all of the settings in BootX which work with my own kernel, will not boot my 8500. After I select that kernel image, it doesn't matter what setting, or if I use the matching ramdisk or not, but all I get is a black sreen + no system activity. I can't say that I tried every single iteration of options (though it felt like I came close :), but nothing seemed to work for me. The 2.6 kernel and ramdisk though, seemed to work perfectly, at least up till the part where I had to partition the system disks. I did have a little trouble getting the udebs from the mirrors but I think my ISP network is more the cause of that. However, since I wasn't actually ready to install to this system yet, I did not proceed past that point. Thanks again Sven. The 2.6 based installer seemed to find all of my hardware, so I don't foresee any major issues. However, when I do a backup of what I currently need on my existing installation, I will do a complete re-install, and I can post back here the results. That will not be till this weekend, most likely. Thanx vinai -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
