I'm no legal genius, but it looks fairly benign. Basically it says, "as

Need help with SDL 1.2.9 packages

2005-09-03 Thread Lawrence Williams
Hi everyone,

I am working on packages for SDL 1.2.9, as I would like to get the buggy,
unstable version out of testing/unstable. I previously packaged SDL since
1.2.7, with Matthew Danish sponsoring the uploads. However, we have been both
busy recently and haven't had adequate time to address the issues in SDL
packaging.

Now while I do have free time, Mr. Danish is still busy. I would like to not
further burdening him with SDL work, so I would like if some DD's would be
willing to test my packages when they're finished and/or (hopefully) upload
them :)

I have sent this to -devel and -mentors to get the widest possible audience.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Lawrence

Good work. If you need any help beta testing the packages or the like, let me

Re: spcaview : package review needed

2006-04-26 Thread Lawrence Williams
Hello,

As one of the SDL maintainers, I can confirm for you that the package
depending on libsdl1.2debian is completely okay. It is indeed a metapackage
which pulls in libsdl1.2debian-alsa by default (now), but can use others
(libsdl1.2debian-oss for example), as well.

You can simply override this I think :)

Hello,

I have for all of my tools/packages manpages (de and fr too) and
using dh_installman wich works perfectly.

Now I have read I must register manpages from the "postinst" script.

How can this be done?

All Debian packages I have checked do nothing with the manpages...

Looking for a mentor

2003-12-10 Thread Lawrence Williams

Hello,

I'm interested in becoming a Debian package maintainer and have been
studying how to create packages from source files. So far, i've managed to
package a few of the more popular KDE themes from KDE-Look.org ( namely
Plastik and Alloy ) and the MandrakeGalaxy theme ( the default in Mandrake
9.1/9.2 ).

At he moment, I am looking for a mentor who can assist me with packaging and
my plans to apply for official debian maintainer status ( so i can
redistribute packages and gave a little something back to the community ).
If anyone is interested and willing to help, please let me know!

RFS: python-osd 0.2.10

2004-10-26 Thread Lawrence Williams

Hello,

I am looking for a sponsor to upload my NMU for python-osd. I have
permission from the official maintainer ( Tommi ). He said that he is
currently unable to maintain the package, but that I am free to make an
NMU for it. I have updated it to the latest upstream and overhauled the
packaging, most notably debian/rules.

I have CC'ed this mail to him, just in case he's willing to sponsor it.

The python-osd package is available in source-form from the Debian
Mentors site.

Status of XMAME in Debian

2004-06-26 Thread Lawrence Williams

Hello,

After toying with emulation for a bit on my PC, I noticed that the XMAME
packages in Debian are woefully outdated. I've attempted to contact the
maintainer via his @debian.org adress, but have received no response.
There have been many upstream improvements since the 0.74 version
currently in the repository. I am ready to prepare updated packages for
NMU, but I need someone who would be willing to sponsor them.

I'm a diehard video game fan and I spend many hours playing the classics
on my computer. As a fellow Debian user, I would be honored to
contribute to the project and I feel updating XMAME ( and possibly other
gaming-related packages in the future ) would be the best way for me to
do so.

RFS: cdirip

2004-08-06 Thread Lawrence Williams

Hello,

I am looking for a sponsor to get my 'cdirip' package into Debian. Here
is the relevant information.

URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/c/cdirip/
Package: cdirip
Version: 0.6.3-2
Priority: optional
Section: otherosfs
Maintainer: Lawrence Williams <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.2.ds1-4)
Suggests: isofix
Description: Extract tracks from DiscJuggler .CDI images
CDIRip extracts the track(s) from DiscJuggler .CDI images and makes it
possible to burn them under Linux, using utilities like cdrecord and k3b
( a nice GUI for KDE ).

I still have to write a man page for the 'cdirip' binary itself, as
required by policy, explaining the available commandline options
available. This is my first package ( though I have many more over at
mentors ) and it has been a real learning experience. In my spare time,
I'm working on a similar program for Nero ( *.nrg ) images.

All suggestions and help is appreciated!

Have a nice day,
Lawrence

RFS: hotway-cvs: send and receive mail via Hotmail, Lycos, Spray, and MSN

2004-08-12 Thread Lawrence Williams

I've already filed an ITP: and I'm looking for a sponsor for my package.

Package name: hotway-cvs
Version: 08122004
Upstream author: David Smith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
URL: http://sourceforge.net/projects/hotwayd/

hotwayd/hotsmtpd are POP3/SMTP-HTTPMail gateway daemons. The HTTPMail
protocol is used by the mail servers Hotmail, Lycos, Spray and MSN. The
hotway suite you can receive and send mail via these services using any
POP3/SMTP compliant mail reader. Note: some email readers don't send
proper SMTP authentication info ( example: kMail 1.6.1 and Evolution
1.4x ), which prevents users from sending mail.

This package is well-tested ( i've been using my own private packages
for months with no problems ). It is based on a snapshot of CVS taken
today with a patch for fixing message download problems.

Sincerely,
Lawrence

Re: RFS: hotway-cvs: send and receive mail via Hotmail, Lycos, Spray, and MSN

2004-08-12 Thread Lawrence Williams

Hello!

I am aware that another hotway package exists in Debian. However, i have
been unable to reach the maintainer for the past 3 months and it no
longer works with Hotmail ( due to MS 'upgrades' to the service ).

Once I figure out why I am having difficulties making multi-binary
packages, I will split hotway-cvs into 2 packages: hotway-cvs-pop3 and
hotway-cvs-smtp. hotway-cvs will become a metapackage depending on
hotway-cvs-pop3, but only recommending hotway-cvs-smtp. This will give
it the same base functionality as hotway used to, with optional smtp
sending support.

As it stands, my package is a drop-in replacement for hotway and any
existing packages depending on it will work with mine.

Sincerely,
Lawrence

get a sponsor to do a NMU.

I would also like to know what is planned for XMAME. It appears to be
unmaintained for quite some time now. However, this is no information on
the wnpp. I am working on a new package based on the latest upstream (
it fixes 15 of the 18 bugs listed in the BTS ). If after 3 weeks there

It would have to be after python-kde3 is uploaded ( it depends on

Right now, it's fairly lintian clean and has no known problems.

The maintainer at mentors.debian.net has approved my working on it (

Actually, I spoke a bit too soon. I'll still need 2 more packages to get

probably get in unstable easily. However, PyLAME might take a bit of
work. Hopefully, I can get something going soon.

I would be happy to look your package over and provide
comments/suggestions if you post a link to them when you're ready.

Actually, I spoke a bit too soon. I'll still need 2 more packages to
get in before uploading. One is simple and small ( njbtools ) and
could probably get in unstable easily. However, PyLAME might take a
bit of work. Hopefully, I can get something going soon.

Update: just got both of 'em done... thanks again to Neil ( who
originally packaged LSongs on mentors ). I'll do an ITP for them in the

haha now i've discovered another problem. python2.3-kde3 works only up
to KDE 3.2.3 by the looks of things. So, me, using KDE 3.3, can't use it
at the moment. I can build LSongs and all, but it won't run because
python2.3-kde3 is incompatible with KDE 3.3 ( a problem with the
upstream itself, not the package or even KDE ).

Right now, the most I can do is get everything else ready ( any missing
dependencies for lsongs sponsored into unstable ), wait for upstream to
update PyKDE for KDE 3.3 support ( aka python2.3-kde3 as the package is
called ), get Ricardo to do another upload, and then put the final
touches on LSongs itself.

Hi,

That would be great. For now, I'd just like some help with the two
dependencies i need for my lsongs package. Both are only small packages
and should be fairly easy to clean up. They are mostly clean now as I've
inherited the work of a previous maintainer. I'll upload them to mentors
later and send you the info.

Thanks!

How to remove ITP from debian.org?

2004-08-26 Thread Lawrence Williams

Hi,

I would like to remove two ITP:, namely python2.3-lame and lsongs. I
want to remove python2.3-lame because it depends on LAME, which has
patent issues. LSongs needs to be removed too because the current
version depends on python2.3-lame.

It is pointless to leave them open, since neither package can ever be
released. Should I just close the bugs or is there something else I
should do?

Thanks!

I have a Microsoft Sidewinder connected to the Gameport on my Intel 810

Once I installed 2.6.3, it stopped working. I use the same modules as
before ( joydev, gameport, ns558, and sidewinder ). Only difference now
is that the gameport module detects the port, then before ns558 fails
with error code -16 ( still haven't discovered why it does ).

I am using ALSA module snd-intel8x0 and have tried every suggestion
under the sun ( passing joystick_port options and the like ). Strange
thing is, I recently tried out SuSE 9.1 Professional ( DVD ) and the

I think what John was saying is that both python2.3-lame and LSongs,
assuming they both are free on their own, could go probably go in
contrib. Users could then install those packages, but would have to get
lame from somewhere else (i.e. non-free, some other repository, etc).

OTOH, if getting LSongs in main was important to you (or somebody) it
might make sense to strip lame support out of LSongs, and either have
the features that use it disabled (probably used for ripping CD's?) or
simple replace that support with support for encoding to a patent-free
format like Ogg/Vorbis.

I'll consider the solutions and look into seeing if it's possible to
strip LAME dependencies from it. Or at least point the user to a place
where they can get the lame package. I know one popular apt source that
has it ( marillat.. his is the one i built python2.3-lame against
apparently lol ).

Hmmm I don't worry if they're not in main. Perhaps both lsongs and
python2.3-lame would be okay in contrib?

Hi!

I agree too, but this is Linspire ( aka Lindows ) we are talking about
here. Since they are trying to be the Linux distro of choice for former
Windows users, they want everything to be somewhat recognizable to
users. Notice how they rename alot of the programs they include?

It's been my experience that MP2 is more prevalent on Windows than Ogg
Vorbis. Anyways, I'll dig up the email of the author ( Duane Maxwell i
believe ) and see what happens.

As a fellow Debian user, I would be honored to
contribute to the project and I feel updating XMAME ( and possibly other
gaming-related packages in the future ) would be the best way for me to
do so.

RFS: cdirip

Hello,
I am looking for a sponsor to get my 'cdirip' package into Debian. Here
is the relevant information.

URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/c/cdirip/
Package: cdirip
Version: 0.6.3-2
Priority: optional
Section: otherosfs
Maintainer: Lawrence Williams <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.2.ds1-4)

Sincerely,
Lawrence

Hello,
Just letting everyone know that i've been in contact with the maintainer
for python-kde3 and he is going to upload it to unstable soon ( i've
offered to help him ). As for hotway-cvs, i'm gonna try to contact the
maintainer once more, and if I am unable to get a reply, I would like to
get a sponsor to do a NMU.

I would also like to know what is planned for XMAME. It appears to be
unmaintained for quite some time now. However, this is no information on
the wnpp. I am working on a new package based on the latest upstream (
it fixes 15 of the 18 bugs listed in the BTS ). If after 3 weeks there
is no reply from the maintainer ( is this enough time?? ), a NMU could
be done. XMAME is a fine program and deserves to be more up-to-date in
Debian. ( Hint: I love old games!! :P )

In the meantime, I will offer to help the Debian project any way I can.
Perhaps package some new software for it :)

Later!

Would anyone here be interested in sponsoring an LSongs package for

It would have to be after python-kde3 is uploaded ( it depends on

Right now, it's fairly lintian clean and has no known problems.

The maintainer at mentors.debian.net has approved my working on it (

Thanks!
Due to it's python-based nature, it doesn't require python-kde3 to be
installed while building ( only requires debhelper and python2.3-dev if
i remember right ). However, it won't load if it is not installed ( will
error out during loading ). I've used lintian to clean up my packaging.
Just got a few nagging issues left ( copyright file and package
description ) to fix. Nothing major.

My main concern is finding a sponsor to perform the upload once
python-kde3 becomes available.

lsongs and been in touch with the maintainer for python-kde3 and
things are looking good. He is planning on doing an upload in the
next day or so. All that leaves for me to do, is find a sponsor for
lsongs and clean up any remaining lint in the packaging.

I may be willing to help look over your packaging, but after this
weekend my time may be limited for a little while. I would suggest
re-posting an RFS message when python-kde3 is in and your lsongs
package can be [more easily] built and tested. =)

RFS: qtfprot: Qt-based GUI for F-PROT Anti-Virus 4.x

2004-08-17 Thread Lawrence Williams
Package: qtfprot
Maintainer: Lawrence Williams <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Upstream Author: Christian Link ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
Upstream URL: www.kde-look.org
Debian URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/q/qtfprot/
Description: QTFprot is a QT-based frontend for F-Prot that makes it as
easy to use as PC-Cillin for Windows!

I know viruses are currently not a big problem on Linux, but it would be
nice to have a easy-to-use GUI for F-PROT be available in Debian. F-PROT
4.x is available in .deb form, so my package will just include the GUI
and Depends: as needed.

Hi,
My mistake... i forgot about that lol. It's still early here :P
I am gonna make the changes suggested so far and give it a test with the
new QT 3.3 that has just been installed on my system by Synaptic.

P.S. I plan on keeping all messages on the list.

No. Contrib is just for cases like yours (free software that depends on
non-free software to be useful/functioning/compiled).
Note that you probably know that from studying the Debian policy
document. ;)
Kind regards

Due to it's python-based nature, it doesn't require python-kde3 to be
installed while building ( only requires debhelper and python2.3-dev
if i remember right ). However, it won't load if it is not installed (
will error out during loading ). I've used lintian to clean up my
packaging. Just got a few nagging issues left ( copyright file and
package description ) to fix. Nothing major.

My main concern is finding a sponsor to perform the upload once
python-kde3 becomes available.

Actually, I spoke a bit too soon. I'll still need 2 more packages to get
in before uploading. One is simple and small ( njbtools ) and could
probably get in unstable easily. However, PyLAME might take a bit of
work. Hopefully, I can get something going soon.

haha now i've discovered another problem. python2.3-kde3 works only up
to KDE 3.2.3 by the looks of things.

Strange
thing is, I recently tried out SuSE 9.1 Professional ( DVD ) and the
YaST sound card utility detected the gamepad and had it working! I
should've noted if it was a 2.6 or 2.4 kernel.

Best of luck to you!

Later!

2004-09-06 Thread Lawrence Williams

Personally, if I were going to try to convince an upstream source of

That way you lose patent encumbrance and gain better output quality as

dh_shlibdeps question

Hello,
I am currently building a program that Depends on libasound2 (>= 1.0.7).
However, using dh_shlibdeps results in a .deb that, among other things,
depends on libasound2 (>= 1.0.5).

Is there any way to force the dependency info so I can make it use
libasound2 (>= 1.0.7)? I have read the various debhelper man pages, to
no luck. Maybe I am just missing something.

Re: dh_shlibdeps question

2004-12-15 Thread Lawrence Williams
Hello,
I will explain fully why I am wondering about this: I am fixing the SDL
packages in Debian. Upstream seems to have changed something ( not sure
what ), in either SDL or ALSA, that breaks compatibility. Rebuilting SDL
against the latest ALSA in Debian ( 1.0.7-3 ) fixes the problem.

However, the depends info generated by dh_shlibdeps is 'libasound2 (>>
1.0.5)', which will cause problems for users who are not using the
latest version.

Could I put this in my shlibs.local file, just to be safe:
libasound 2 libasound2 (>= 1.0.7-3)
