I've looked into the package list for the gnome flavor. I identified several "leaf" packages that might be removed together with some of their dependencies, but only few of them make for significant space, and those are packages that, while not strictly part of Gnome, one would reasonably expect to be there. Thus removing openoffice.org still seems to me the only viable option. Anyway, these are the groups of packages that I found. The numbers are the sizes of the Debian binary packages. I am not sure how they translate into the size of the livecd image, but I suppose they be close. This was done manually, so the list of removable dependencies might not be complete or even correct. - openoffice.org and reverse dependencies (leaf packages: openoffice.org, openoffice.org-help-en-us, openoffice.org-thesaurus-en-us, openoffice.org-gnome, openoffice.org.gcj, openoffice.org-evolution): openoffice.org_2.4.1-17_i386.deb274558 openoffice.org-base_2.4.1-17_i386.deb 2953334 openoffice.org-base-core_2.4.1-17_i386.deb 972514 openoffice.org-calc_2.4.1-17_i386.deb 5667066 openoffice.org-common_2.4.1-17_all.deb14508316 openoffice.org-core_2.4.1-17_i386.deb 38641752 openoffice.org-draw_2.4.1-17_i386.deb 2944348 openoffice.org-evolution_2.4.1-17_i386.deb 356026 openoffice.org-filter-mobiledev_2.4.1-17_all.deb367204 openoffice.org-gcj_2.4.1-17_i386.deb 3575134 openoffice.org-gnome_2.4.1-17_i386.deb 355290 openoffice.org-gtk_2.4.1-17_i386.deb469380 openoffice.org-help-en-us_2.4.1-17_all.deb12553068 openoffice.org-impress_2.4.1-17_i386.deb897852 openoffice.org-java-common_2.4.1-17_all.deb2975540 openoffice.org-math_2.4.1-17_i386.deb 584478 openoffice.org-officebean_2.4.1-17_i386.deb 319650 openoffice.org-report-builder-bin_2.4.1-17_i386.deb1125102 openoffice.org-style-andromeda_2.4.1-17_all.deb3457616 openoffice.org-style-tango_2.4.1-17_all.deb3699482 openoffice.org-thesaurus-en-us_2.4.0-3_all.deb 5141642 openoffice.org-writer_2.4.1-17_i386.deb7496356 openoffice.org-writer2latex_0.5-8_all.deb 383094 - 109718802 - inkscape: inkscape_0.46-2.lenny2_i386.deb 18044096 - gimp: gimp_2.4.7-1_i386.deb 4001688 gimp-data_2.4.7-1_all.deb 9793454 13795142 - pidgin: pidgin_2.4.3-4_i386.deb 678692 pidgin-data_2.4.3-4_all.deb7013756 --- 7692448 - gthumb: gthumb_2.10.8-1_i386.deb666510 gthumb-data_2.10.8-1_all.deb 2123910 --- 2790420 The following aren't strictly leaf packages, they are dependencies of the gnome metapackage, but are supposedly self-contained enough that they could be removed (or at least I guess so): - gnome-games: gnome-games_2.16.3-1_i386.deb 800790 gnome-games-data_2.22.3-3_all.deb 18506504 gnome-cards-data_2.22.3-3_all.deb 623648 gnuchess_5.07-4.1_i386.deb 95668 20026610 - gnome-themes-extras: gnome-themes-extras_0.9.0.deb0.4_all.deb 5767848 - gdm-themes: gdm-themes_0.6.1_all.deb 3743604 Summary: to free ~55 MB as needed, you either remove openoffice.org (~105 MB), or gimp, inkscape and gnome-games (~49 MB) plus a few other packages (that may be pidgin, or gthumb and gnome-themes-extras, or gnome-themes-extras and gdm-themes...). Font customization on gdm's logon screen.
Can anyone point me to a document that explains how/where this is done? The gnome desktop config tool works fine in this respect for .. well .. the desktop.. but for some reason it does not have any effect where gdm is concerned. I need to (1) turn off the blur aka "anti-alisiang" that doesn't make sense at the smaller point sizes I favor, and (2) specify some quality font such as M$'s Verdana or Tahoma. I want this debian-derived desktop to look like a Windows clone - since this is the reason I installed it in the first place: something to replace the Win98 install that came with the machine ten years ago. I have asked on that debian-derived distro forum but I met with more goodwill than useful answer and since this is not distro-specific, I thought I might ask here just in case.
