hi, if it's a thinkpad (ibm) there is a tool called tpctl and is more or less equivalent to the ibm's orinigal dos tool ps2.exe and with this tool you can change the bios settings while running the machine. but i guess turning of the backlight is an bios option that you can't change with software. have a nice day, alias m.nine.six. hi, at first check if your card is supported from the libs: http://www.mesa3d.org/ http://glx.on.openprojects.net/ and other then check on which modes are ogl is supported. (for example my old riva 128 supports it till 16 bit 1024 or so). and if it is supported then (on most packages) it should be build in else you have to build the specific packages. as far as i know it is posible to install the potato from a pcmcia device. BUT the pcmcia isn't integrated into the kernel. for that reason you have to setup the basic install from the disks (about 11 disks) and then install the rest of the system from the pcmcia device zip, network or anything else. --- the most of the pcmcia will be integrated into the kernel in 2.4.0 kernel. if i made a mistake and since potato is released and changed something please correct me... the problem is that the 2.2.x kernels doesn't support pcmcia. so you have to install the base system with the driver that you will be able to use the pcmcia. the rescue, root, driver 1,2,3, base 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,.. are avaible under dists/potato/main/disks-/current/images-.../ put the images to the disks and install the base system. and go further. and while installing read the step by step installation advices from the debian site for potato. have fun, alias m.nine.six. hey, THANKS A LOT for this tip! i had more or less the same problem with my built-in lucent modem on my tp570 with the kernels greater then 2.2.14. and now i can also use the modem without that damn ac and without crash. If you want some more help contact off the list you mean the linux driver? linux568.zip if you mean this driver you should have a lot of problems. the first is that this module is bad coded. checkout http://puma.uio.no/toshiba-40xx/ then the module is compiled for 2.2.12-20 and will not work for kernels greater then 2.2.14 until you still use the ppp module from 2.2.14. also until you put the slhc module manualy into the kernel the kernel won't accept the ppp module. then (on my system) if you power-on the box with battery power and want to use ltmodem the box will hang until you disable the "PCI Power Management" in BIOS. so you can see i had a lot of trouble with it. but now it works. also checkout http://www.encypher.net/linux/thinkpad570.html he will post more details in a few days if not you can mail him. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". If you want some more help contact off the list you mean the linux driver? linux568.zip if you mean this driver you should have a lot of problems. the first is that this module is bad coded. checkout http://puma.uio.no/toshiba-40xx/ then the module is compiled for 2.2.12-20 and will not work for kernels greater then 2.2.14 until you still use the ppp module from 2.2.14. also until you put the slhc module manualy into the kernel the kernel won't accept the ppp module. then (on my system) if you power-on the box with battery power and want to use ltmodem the box will hang until you disable the "PCI Power Management" in BIOS. so you can see i had a lot of trouble with it. but now it works. also checkout http://www.encypher.net/linux/thinkpad570.html he will post more details in a few days if not you can mail him.

hi, i have a thinkpad 570. to use the hibernation mode you have to install the dos hibernation utility which comes from ibm. the hibernation file should be on it's own partition. as far as i know the utility creates its own partition (it should be primary and somekind of fat16 also called "ibm thinkpad hibernation partition" or something like that). you HAVE TO install this utility before you install anything on your laptop or else it wont work - like mine. also the apm -s set the pc only to sleep mode. so you have to use the key combination "ctrl+f12". there is also an utility for linux that you can check out: http://www.procyon.com/~pda/lphdisk/ have fun, alias m.nine.six. cpu speed & bogomips
hi, i'm using an thinkpad 570 with pII 366 mhz with debian potato. sometimes after rebooting the bios shows me that my cpu speed is only 180 mhz. and also the linux kernel gets it as 180 mhz but then the bogoMips shows 360 as following: Detected 183630 kHz processor. Console: colour VGA+ 80x25 Calibrating delay loop... 363.72 BogoMIPS my question is: what's going on??? and also what i would know: is my box now slower than my 4 years old server??? thanks in advance. -- bye, alias m.nine.six.

NOTE: i have a thinkpad and if i start the laptop with ac-power everything works fine but if i start the laptop with battery power then the system will crash (you even won't be able to remote login to restart your system). but i found a solution: i switched the 'PCI power management' from "auto" to "disabled". and now it works fine. NOTE2: i have still some hangs from lucent while using the connection but it's very rare. hi, i have a thinkpad 570. to use the hibernation mode you have to install the dos hibernation utility which comes from ibm. the hibernation file should be on it's own partition. as far as i know the utility creates its own partition (it should be primary and somekind of fat16 also called "ibm thinkpad hibernation partition" or something like that). you HAVE TO install this utility before you install anything on your laptop or else it wont work - like mine. also the apm -s set the pc only to sleep mode. so you have to use the key combination "ctrl+f12". there is also an utility for linux that you can check out: http://www.procyon.com/~pda/lphdisk/ have fun, alias m.nine.six. cpu speed & bogomips
hi, i'm using an thinkpad 570 with pII 366 mhz with debian potato. sometimes after rebooting the bios shows me that my cpu speed is only 180 mhz. and also the linux kernel gets it as 180 mhz but then the bogoMips shows 360 as following: Detected 183630 kHz processor.
