hi, if it's a thinkpad (ibm) there is a tool called tpctl and is more or less equivalent to the ibm's orinigal dos tool ps2.exe and with this tool you can change the bios settings while running the machine.
but i guess turning of the backlight is an bios option that you can't change with software. have a nice day, alias m.nine.six.
