XFree86 3.3.6 supports SMI Lynx

2000-01-10 Thread Sebastian Schaffert
... which will greatly help all of you that have an ASUS L7200/L7300.
(Some other laptops have that chipset, too). Looks like this server is
accelerated and it seems to detect the display size automatically.

I hope to see a Debian package of it soon, although the binary XF86_SVGA from
3.3.6 works just great on XF86 3.3.5:-)

If anyone is interested, I can post the XF86Config for the ASUS L7(2|3)00
series laptops.

I have it running on a SMI 910 Lynx (without 3d). If you wish, I can send you a
copy of my XF86Config. Note that this chip doesn't run under XFree86 4.0.2 for
me, even although it is supported (I have already sent a bug report on that to
the XFree86 team).

Yes, I have the same laptop and the same problem with all 4.0 versions I tried.
I submitted a bug report to XFree86 about 2 or 3 months ago, but didn't get an
answer yet.

I have one and can say that all of the parts that I use (ISDN, modem, ethernet)
work (more or less, the linux driver for the ethernet part seems to be a little
buggy - sometimes a DHCP server doesn't recognize me, e.g., but in general, i.e.
with manually setting the IP address, it works).

The ISDN part is just plugged into the card and can be handled like any serial
modem (just ATDT does it for me, I didn't even have to look at the
documentation).

Would be great if you send me your config.:-)

The last version that I tried was the 4.0.2pre that came with debian unstable.
I didn't have the time to experiment any further (and risk data loss!) the
last few months.

BTW: I am using the siliconmotion driver of XFree86 3.3.6 and have frame buffers
on console without any problems.

Yes, I know that problem and have tried everything in that direction (and in
others: turning on/off framebuffer, starting just "X", without
windowmanager,...)

The problem always occured when the first window was opened (the Gnome splash
screen usually or - if I started a plain X server - the xterm).

But - as already mentioned - perhaps that has changed with version 4.0.2. I have
tried with 4.0.2pre only and didn't have the time (and nerve) since, as it
requires a file system check every time the system crashes.
