A notebook for Debian?
Hi, all. I'm gradually migrating from Mandrakelinux to Debian. As soon as possible I want to buy a notebook. Going around the shops I saw a certain number of notebooks, that I'm reporting below. I couldn't find any of them listed at: http://tuxmobil.org/mylaptops.html nor at: http://www.linux-on-laptops.com . Is maybe anybody out there who has a direct Debian experience (positive or negative) with any of those machines? Before buying, I'd like to be sure that Debian Sarge 3.1 (and possibly Mandrake 10.1 also) will work fine with the machine I'm buying. Re: A notebook for Debian?
Thanks indeed to all who wrote. In the net I could find some very good occasions with some of the notebooks that have been suggested. But the trouble is, that most of them are without a DVD recorder, and I wish a computer with a DVD recorder. Some other, like the Dell Inspiron 8200, are too expensive. Please, some not too expensive model with a DVD recorder, supporting Debian Sarge 3.1 and (possibly) Mandrake 10.1? You see, I need a gradual migration from Mandrake to Debian. (From the postings in the present thread it seems to come out that Compaq and IBM notebooks are very good with linux, but either old or dear.) Rodolfo

I'm looking for a DVD recorder inside the laptop, and maybe there are new models of the IBM Thinkpad R50e with this feature. If yours has it too, please could you report the exact model: "IBM Thinkpad R50e... something?". (Do you maybe know if it supports Mandrake 10.1 also?) Thanks, Rodolfo

Thanks to all who replied. In the end I bought a Hyundai 255KI 15. I managed to install Mandrake 10.1 on it, and also Debian Sarge 3.1, but only the base installation: I don't manage to install a graphical environment. I'll start a new thread about that. Rodolfo
Help to install graphical environment on Hyundai 255KI 15.
Hi. I don't manage to install a graphical environment on my Hyundai 255KI 15, Debian Sarge 3.1 stable. After the base installation I did: # apt-get install gdm gnome , but no graphical environment will start, neither with: $ startx nor with: $ gnome-session . Any help? (And, how can I start KDE instead of gnome?) Thanks for any reply, Rodolfo

I tried to follow all the indications, but nothing. I did: # apt-get install gdm gnome # apt-get install x-window-system x-window-system-core # apt-get install kde kde-core , but when I do: '$ startx' it says something like: XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining. I can't report the whole output because I can't obviously copy and paste. As for the file /etc/rc.conf, it does not exist in my system. Other hints? Maybe something wrong in the laborious xfree86 setting? There are many questions I don't know how to answer, so I simply type 'Enter'. Tanks, Rodolfo

Don't manage to turn computer off
Hi. I don't manage to turn off my Hyundai 255KI 15, Debian Sarge 3.1, neither with '# shutdown -h now' nor with '# halt'. Any help? Instead, I can reboot the computer with '# reboot'. Also, I can turn it off with Mandrake 10.1 with '$ halt'. Thanks for any help. Rodolfo
Internet connection with cellular phone
I'm trying to connect to internet with a gprs cellular phone, a Motorola c350, connected to my laptop Hyundai 255KI 15 with a mini usb cable. Debian Sarge 3.1 is installed. I've been following the howto at: http://www.debianitalia.org/modules/wfsection/article.php?page=1&articleid=96 . First I made sure the acm driver was there, with: # dmesg |fgrep acm . Then I did: # mknod /dev/usb/ttyACM0 c 166 0 . Then I created a file /etc/pppd/peers/provider and filled it with: # Speed 115200 # Use hardware flow control (i.e. RTS/CTS) to control the flow # of data on the serial port. crtscts # Use the modem control lines. modem # Specifies that pppd should create a UUCP-style lock file for # the serial device to ensure exclusive access to the device. lock # Disable Van Jacobson style TCP/IP header compression in both # the transmit and the receive direction. novj # Disables the default behaviour when no local IP address is # specified, which is to determine (if possible) the local IP # address from the hostname. noipdefault # This option causes pppd to create such a default route when # IPCP comes up, and delete it when the link is terminated. defaultroute disconnect '/usr/sbin/chat -e -f /etc/chatscripts/disconnect -v' connect '/usr/sbin/chat -e -f /etc/chatscripts/provider -v' /dev/usb/ttyACM0 user anything password anything #With this option, pppd will accept all control characters from the peer, including those marked in the receive asyncmap receive-all logfile "/var/log/pppd.log" nobsdcomp nodeflate . Then I created a file /etc/chatscripts/provider and filled it with: '' AT TIMEOUT 240 OK 'AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","web.omnitel.it"' OK ATDT*99# TIMEOUT 22 CONNECT "" . Then I put "noauth" in place of "auth" in the file /etc/ppp/options. Then I tried to connect with '# pon', but it couldn't be established: this is the file /var/log/pppd.log: AT OK AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","web.omnitel.it" OK ATDT*99# CONNECT Serial connection established. Screen resolution on Hyundai 255KI 15
Hi, listers. It seems to me that the screen resolution of my Hyundai 255KI 15 is lower than normal: everything appears too big. When I run 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86' the resolution value is always 1920×1440, and remains so although I put it on 1024×768. I have Debian Sarge stable. I'm new with Debian. Could you provide any help? Thanks in advance, Rodolfo -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The problem seems to be solved now since I run '$ dpkg-reconfigure -pmedium xserver.xfree86' again and properly selected '1024×768' as screen resolution, using the 'space' key. I didn't know I had to use the 'space' key to select and unselect values, that's why it didn't work: I hit 'enter'. I'm new with debian and still don't handle very well the installation debian tool.
