GDM and Thinkfinger
Somewhere amongst my regular dist-upgrades (testing/unstable) on my Lenovo R61e gdm stopped using the thinkfinger library. On the login screen there is still "or swipe finger" but swiping the finger does not work any longer. The problem is not with the thinkfinger library because it still works on the console login. Any idea how I can convince gdm (or kdm, xdm, wdm) to use the thinkfinger library for the login? Disable touchpad on Dell E6410 (Squeeze)
Previously I had a Thinkpad and /etc/X11/xorg.conf with a synaptics configuration. I could disable the touchpad with this command: /usr/bin/synclient "TouchpadOff=`/usr/bin/synclient -l | sed -ne 's/\(TouchpadOff *= *\)\([01]\)/\2/p' | sed -e 'y/01/10/'`" Now I have a Dell E6410 with Squeeze (and no xorg.conf) and I get $ Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded? when I try the same. How do I load synaptics without /etc/X11/xorg.conf? External screen
I have a Dell Latitute E6410 and have a mixture of Testing and Sid on it. Recently I got an external Dell flatscreen. It happened several times now that when I connect the screen to my computer while it is running, it freezes and I have to push the power button two switch if off. This does not not always happens immediately. It happens nearly 100% of the time that I want to use the option from the Gnome menus to (re)configure the screens. I have more success using the following script to activate the external screen but it also leaded to a frozen computer several times: #!/bin/sh sudo xrandr --output DP1 --auto sudo xrandr --output VGA1 --auto --above DP1 It is a bit frustrating. Does anyone else have the same problem? It seems to me that the more Debian (or Linux for that matter) develops it more and more becomes as unstable as the operating system I was using 16 years ago before Windows 95 (which I never installed on my computers) : Windows 3.1. I am mostly using an external usb-keyboard with this laptop because when it is under load I get many keyboard errors like repetitive characters. That does not happen with the external keyboard. When I boot, is it just gdm > that's started or is it a special runlevel for X like Slackware has? You can not use gdm, kdm, xdm and wdm simultaneously. Only one of them. From the gdm (or kdm) login screen you can choose which X environment you want to use this time. There is no special runlevel for X in Debian. gdm|kdm|xdm|wdm is started from /etc/init.d on runlevel 2. I am not sure what causes the display error you are talking about. > - There are several applications that I'd like to run as root from the KDE > or GNOME panel, like XMMS (I have a Windows partition with my CDs as .mp3s > and for some reason Debian only mounts the partitions, but I can't open the > folders if I am not root) or KPPP (I recieve a 'Permission denied' or 'Could > not find kppp' error if I am not root) and automounting CDs and Floppies > when I click on the CDROM or Floppy icon. How do I do all that? If there are > others ways than using the root account, I'd be more than happy to know them > as I do not take the name of root in vain. For xmms and other sound-related programs you can add yourself to the group "audio" and then you should be able to use them. The permission to mount|umount devices can be set in /etc/fstab. You could also add yourself to the groups "floppy" and "disk". Or you can use sudo with the nopasswd option configured for a trusted user to run programs which normal users have difficulty to use. An example of such a program is xcdroast. If you would start it with the command "sudo xcdroast" you should be able to run it without the need to su to root. Others on the list might have better suggestions but I hope this helps a little bit. Regards. In my maildir's I have files with the name "hcache.db" How do you make unison handle those files? If I remember correctly this is what I did some years ago: Configure mutt to use maildir and then read the mbox-file with mutt. When it saves the changed status, it saved it in maildir format. Our management recently decided to buy Dell servers. We tested installation of different operating systems on IBM, HP and Dell servers and the Dell-server was the easiest to install Linux on. As a Linux system administrator, I tried both Redhat and Debian (using the bonzai-image) and did not have any installation problems.
