I wouldn't pay more than $1300nz for a new laptop. That way you can get
an upgrade every 18 months, by which time the hardware will be faster,
break more often, be more closed and require MS more.

I'm on a Toshiba, don't think I'll buy another one. On this one the
mobo died after I had it for 5 weeks, so it had to go back to base to be
fixed which took another two weeks. I'm actually very careful with my
laptop, it spends it's life on a table (not on my knee).

Do you mean that after plugging it in, the battery charge will continue
to drop until below 10% but then it starts charging and goes to 100%
without problems? (What would happen now if you unplug and re-plug at
50%?) Or by saying that it won't charge under 10%, do you mean that it
also never exceeds that? If so, I think your battery has gotten old.
This is what happened when my batteries got old.

You can buy it with ubuntu installed on it in america or you can

Good luck.

Yep, but I'll have this one for at least 3 years due to the funding
arrangements, hopefully longer as it's supposed to be a good machine.

Recall of McNeil Over-the-Counter Products [Message ID: bab99]

2010-01-19 Thread iGuard Drug Alert
Voluntary Recall of Certain Lots of McNeil Over-the-Counter Products

McNeil Consumer Healthcare is expanding its December 2009 recall of Tylenol
Arthritis Pain Caplet bottles to include certain lots of over-the-counter
Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl, Rolaids, Simply Sleep, and St. Joseph products. The
company is carrying out this recall because they have received several consumer
reports of an unusual moldy, musty, or mildew-like odor that was associated
with nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea. These reported cases were
temporary and non-serious. The uncharacteristic smell is caused by the presence
of trace amounts of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole. The source of
2,4,6-tribromoanisole is believed to be the breakdown of a chemical used to
treat wooden pallets that transport and store packaging materials. The health
effects of this compound have not been well studied. At this time, all of the
consumer cases reported to McNeil were associated with Tylenol Arthritis Pain
Caplet 100 count bottles with the distinctive red EZ-OPEN CAP.

McNeil has now identified and recalled all product lots that it believes may
have the potential to be affected, even if they have not been the subject of
consumer complaints. McNeil has set up a website to help you determine if any
McNeil products that you may have are part of this recall:
http://www.mcneilproductrecall.com

For more information, please visit:
http://www.mcneilproductrecall.com/page.jhtml?id=/include/press.inc

* * * *
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

If you use any over-the-counter products for pain, fever, cold and flu
symptoms, allergies, sleep, stomach problems, or prevention of heart attack or
stroke, please check to see if you have any Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl, Rolaids,
Simply Sleep, or St. Joseph products. If you have any of these products, go to
the product recall website or call McNeil Customer Service to see if the
product and lot number is involved in the recall. The lot numbers are usually
found on the side of the bottle, on the bottom of the bottle, or on the outer
packaging.

McNeil Product Recall Website: http://www.mcneilproductrecall.com
McNeil Customer Service Telephone: 1-888-222-6036 (Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 8
p.m. Eastern Time, and Saturday-Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time)

If you have any of the recalled product, you should stop using the product and
contact McNeil by phone or internet for instructions for a refund or
replacement and for information about how to return or dispose of the product.

If you have taken the recalled product and have medical concerns or questions,
please contact your healthcare provider. Any adverse reactions may also be
reported to the FDA's MedWatch Program by fax at 1-800-FDA-0178; by mail at

have been using a T60p for over 4 years by now and still very happy with it.
Essentially all hardware components are supported by Linux (except for
the modem).

I use it constantly, in the office and at home, carrying it back and
forth every day - hibernating it for the road.
Had two other laptops before but they did not last longer than 2-3 years
due to the heavy ware and tear.

This one is still fully functional, thanks especially to the very robust
hinge. I had to exchange only the keyboard recently as many of the keys
were slowly giving up on me ;-).

Mine is still IBM branded and i don't know how the quality changed since
the Lenovo takeover, but i guess the production is at the same
location and the look is pretty much unchanged.

broadcom-sta-source driver problem

2010-01-19 Thread John Kapnogiannis
Hello there. Well I hope this is the correct list to post this. I got a dell
studio 1555 with a dell wireless 1397 (broadcom 4312 rev 01) wificard. I am
using the broadcom driver cause as far as I know there is no alternative.
I installed the driver as descirpted in debian wiki with module assistant and
then modprobing the wl module on every boot. Everything was working fine until
an upgrade a couple of days ago. The packages broadcom-sta-source andt
broadcom-sta-common upgaded from version 5.10.92.9.3-1 to 5.10.92.9.3-3
(actually the last digit is different which I thought would fix any supposed
bugs existing -although I didn't have any). After the upgrade I used the
module assistant to build the module wl again with the updated version of the
driver. Well everything went just fine. The problem is that after the first
reboot and then I couldn't see the eth1 network interface which is my
wireless. As if the driver is just not working. I searched a little for a bug
report and I didn't find anything. I currently have switched back to the
previous driver version and everything is normal again. Any ideas why the
updated driver doesn't work for me?

Thank you :)

Hi,
As a first guess, your inface must be, now, wlan0. You can check that with

I second this. I am supporting 3 friends' Dells with b43-fwcutter: Inspiron
5100, 8600, and Mini 10v. Haven't messed with the Broadcom drivers/firmware

If you are upgrading from and earlier kernel then you should indeed
already have the firmware.

One thing I ran into several times (although I think some distros have
stopped doing this) was that each new kernel version came with its own
/lib/firmware directory, so the firmware may simply be in the wrong
location.

Check your logs: if the bcm43xx module has loaded but complains about
missing firware, you might try pointing a find at /lib and looking for it.

good luck

Sorry for the misunderstanding. If you read my first post you will see that I
am not using the bc43 driver but the proprietary driver by broadcom
(wiki.debian.org/wl). I intend to give it a try with the bc43 but I only
posted to this list cause an update of the broadcom-sta-source and broadcom-
sta-common packages to a newer version made the wifi interface disappear. I am
currently using the older version so I am ok. I just wanted to report this
somehow and get advice in case I did something wrong. I just built the module
wl again with the updated drivers nothing more, so I think it's a bug

kernel version from testing.

My fault, should have read more carefully.

If it's a fresh install you certainly won't have the firmware - last
time I installed debian on a b43-equipped laptop the module kept telling
