There is no soundcard listet here. So your card is a non PCI, which means in
this case it is an ISA card. So you have to try..

in the dir /lib/modules//kernel/sound/isa/
should be some modules..

you can load them using modprobe, and with dmesg you can control if it was
successfully.

so no ALSA is loaded. If a module is loaded and a soundcard found, it file
should exsist and populated with the alsa devices.

2005-12-05 Thread Adrien Caillot

Hello,

high_desert wrote:

Can anybody help me get sound and the touchpad work under Debian on a Compaq
Presario 1255?

Maybe I can. I have the same laptop computer and everything works fine
with Debian.

But I have installed it more than one year ago, when I was a newbie with
Debian, so my installation is not perfect.

Firefox seems to handle flash better than Modzilla does - can I apt-get
remove "Modzilla Web Browser" and "Modzilla Composer" now?

Yes.

I installed all the alsa stuff I could find to no avail. Part of the problem
is I am not sure what the sound hardware is. The Compaq site,
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?dlc=en&lc=en&product=95000&lang=
en&cc=us&docname=c00255595, lists "JBL Pro Audio System" and "Aureal A3D
Interactive 360 degree Positional Sound."

Windows said it was an "ESS Audiodrive 1869".
I saved all the system informations given by Windows in a postscript
file before deleting Windows and installing Linux. Unfortunately I'm
looking for this file and I don't find it anymore.

It works with my 2.4.27 kernel with the "sb" module :
modprobe sb irq=5

For the touchpad, I just said to Xfree that it was a PS/2 mouse and it
works well.

If it can be useful for you, here is my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 :
http://yokaunix.free.fr/info/X11/XF86Config-4-CP1255

I hope this helps.

The IP on each cards are 192.168.123.106 and 192.168.123.107.
I've just notice that if only both Linux's machines are connected, it work
perfectly. So the problem is when I boot my father's computer (running
Windows). I'll try it later to be sure.

Out of curiosity, does your father's machine have only a wireless
connection, or does it have both a wired and wireless connection? If it
has both, check to see that bridging is not enabled. (If it is enabled,
that could easily be causing your problems.)

I reinstalled Debian, and it turned out to be just as simple as:

# apt-get install x-window-system

, and select /dev/psaux as mouse port, and then

# apt-get install xfce4
$ startx

No. It's only connected by Wireless. The computer has a network card but it
isn't used.

Currently, his computer can't boot ! I don't know why. I'll check tomorow.

Couldn't figure out what to remove - seemed like anything I found and choose
had dependencies that would remove core things that Firefox uses. Maybe I just
need to remove the aliases to the Modzilla Web Browser... Are there specific
packages to remove?

I think maybe I'm being to optimistic. I have a USB mouse plugged in and was

USB mouse be hot swappable? The touchpad and the USB mouse both work but
mutually exclusive?

Thanks!
