I'm using Debian Sarge with kernel 2.6.8 on it.

 Hello
In the log that you attached there only one Error (EE) with the DRI
driver, and they is not necessary
In order to run X, just run the 3D accelerator.
I suggest start reading some document for example from debian you have
[1].
You can also can read the instructions from other people that almost
install Debian or other Linux
In her Mac and read the part of the X server, you find there in [2] and
[3].
And finally the best one that I think you can read is the documentation
on [4].

 Good Luck.

Subject: problem with gui

Hi!
I am a debian newbie and I installed debian sarge 2.6.8 on my apple
powerbook g3 firewire laptop. The installation ran fine but I have a
problem with the GUI. These are the errors that I am getting. I tried
solving them by using dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and startx
commands with no success.
Can somebody help me in thi matter.

Re: Help, installing softmodem driver

2004-10-20 Thread Rony
Hi,

Sorry, seems there's a package called sl-modem-daemon in Debian package
list. I read the article about softmodem in Toshiba, and run directly
to the download site...

I installed sl-modem-daemon, without sl-modem-source. Seems it can use
the ALSA driver.

Okay, after installing sl-modem-daemon, i installed KPPP, dialup tool
for KDE. First I cannot start KPPP, found out /usr/bin/kppp belong to
"dip" group, so added my account to dip group.

When using the KPPP to query the modem, found err msg "unable to open
modem". So I trace /dev/modem, and all the symbolic links it links to.
And found that the last dev in the link belong to group "dialout". I
added my account to "dialout" group. Still got the same "unable to open
modem" msg. Here's the modem command I got from KPPP.

Pre-init delay (sec/100) : 50
Initialization string 1  : ATZ
Initialization string 2  :
Post-init delay (sec/100): 50
Dialing speed (sec/100)  : 70
Init response: OK
No dial tone detection : ATX3
Dial string  : ATDT
Connect response : CONNECT
Busy response: BUSY
No carrier response : NO CARRIER
No dial tone response: NO DIALTONE
Hangup string: +++ATH
Hangup response  : OK
Answer string: ATA
Ringtone response: RING
Answer response  : CONNECT
DLP response : DIGITAL LINE DETECTED
Escape string: +++
Escape response  : OK
Guard time (sec/50)  : 50
Volume off/low/high  : M0L0   M1L1   M1L3

Is the above setting correct for sl-modem? Many thx.

suspend, power save or saving, hibernate mode in Indpiron 5160

2004-10-20 Thread H. S.
I am trying to make some sense of these modes in Dell Inspiron 5160. I
am using ACPI (with acpid) and it seems to regulate the fan(fan is
really quit often) and tells me about the battery status. But I am not
sure if the suspend/hibernate/power saving modes work.

1) how do I test for these?
2) Second, do I need these option for these modes to work(they are
commented out in my current kernel.)?
CONFIG_PM=y
CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND=y
CONFIG_PM_DISK=y
CONFIG_PM_DISK_PARTITION="/dev/hdc12"

3) This website gives some different options
http://softwaresuspend.berlios.de/Software-suspend-2.html#ss2.1 :
CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND2=y
CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND2_CORE=y
CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND2_WRITER=y
CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND_SWAPWRITER=y
CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND_LZF_COMPRESSION=y
CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND_TEXT_MODE=y

What is this all about?
4) Whis is better, apm or acpi?
5) Does the closing the lid and making the laptop go to
suspend/hibernate work?

Thanks,
->HS

I think those are from the SWSUSP patch - which you may very well need.

> 4) Whis is better, apm or acpi?

ACPI does a lot more than APM ... when it works. However, it probably makes
no difference to you - APM isn't functional on my Inspiron, and probably not
on your more recent one. I've not got CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND to work, and
haven't recently tried the swsusp patch.

Only if you configure it. There's nothing there to do it automatically.
acpid is absolutely necessary. If you're using KDE, klaptopdaemon might
help.

It was non-functional at first when I had BottomEdge set to the wrong
value (IIRC it was too high), so it was unintentional, but the answer
would be yes in this case.

I have two laptops. One will not do ACPI at all. That would be a
Inspiron 4100. But on APM it works quite well. I had to do
absolutely nothing on the 4100 to make it suspend by closing the lid,
awaken by opening the lid, etc. Networking, USB, sound all come back
even with a Linuxant wireless driver in place. However, the IBM
Thinkpad T23 will not do APM at all so I had to learn ACPI. The main
things I figured out is that even with the 2.6.8.1 kernel, suspend
would not work right with the T23. I had to download the latest acpi
patches from acpi.sf.net and patch the kernel. When I closed the lid
on the T23, nothing happened until I wrote a script which will send
the laptop off to a suspend state with a lid close event. Now, when I
close the lid on the laptop which likes ACPI it gracefully nods off.
When I open the lid it awakens and sound, USB, networking all work.

I think ACPI takes more work reading, learning, writing a few little
scripts and also patching the default kernels to get better suspend
support. There are also different types of suspend like to RAM and
DISK. For me, the 2.6.8.1 kernel was a bit tricky.

If the Inspiron does not do ACPI, APM for me just works. If it does
do ACPI, you may need to read on the patches suggested by derek above.
 I don't know of a way to find out unless you just try.

Howto turn off laptop backlight

2004-10-20 Thread Ruhi Bloodworth
Hi,
I have an averatec 3150 laptop, and I'd like to be able to turn off the
backlight. The brightness keys only adjust the backlight within a small
range.

Regards,
Ruhi Bloodworth

Then try setting the hsync and vsync ranges yourself.

Run that
   dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
and set the monitor to those frequencies you look up from the monitor
documentation, or choose the medium setup and a low-end monitor.

Don't send that long X Server log anymore. I have now received it
three times.
