If I remember correctly, using openafs with the 2.6 kernel branch is
still a problem. If you take a look at (if you have installed
openafs-modules-source)
/usr/share/doc/openafs-modules-source/README.gz
in section A. 1. there is no AFS sys_name for the 2.6 series, which
may be an indication that it is not working. Unfortunately the Linux
AFS FAQ at http://www.umlug.umd.edu/linuxafs/ is not online.

Using Kernels from 2.4.22 up to 2.4.27 I never had problems (woody and
sarge). I built my modules from the Debian source package using make-kpkg
(a great tool).

 1. apt-get install openafs-modules-source kpkg
 2. cd /usr/src ; tar xzf /usr/src/openafs.tar.gz
 3. cd /usr/src/linux
 4. make-kpkg modules_image
 5. install Debianpackage in /usr/src

Worked fine for me.

OK, I'm replying to myself here -- I was replying too fast. What I will
be building is a common infrastructure to _host_ these scripts, and the
required components to bind acpid/apmd/pmud/pbbuttonsd to these common
scripts. The actual scripts to handle the events are a different matter.
I will try to put as much support for common AC/battery switching logic
as possible into laptop-mode-tools, e.g. cpufreq, backlight, etcetera,
but I don't think handling lid events is really supposed to be done in
there. Perhaps when the common infrastructure is done there should be a
"laptop" package that includes scripts for lid etc. and that allows for
configuration in a simple /etc/laptop.conf (and perhaps with some
configuration questions). I'll probably start that discussion once the
common infrastructure is done, because I don't think such a package
would really work without the common infrastructure.

Er, are you sure your laptop supports ACPI properly (i.e. in a way that
the Linux kernel likes)?

If APM works, then use it, would be my advice. :)

The problem is that there _isn't_ such a thing as "common" events. Mine are
probably the same as yours (because we both have Inspirons) but they won't be
the same as somebody else's Thinkpad (and there's no guarantee that ours are
even the same). ACPI defines a way to control all sorts of events, but
doesn't enforce any kind of naming standard.

Best of luck - I hope you can find a way to make it work for a reasonably
large subset of machines. Just trying to figure out what a system's
batteries or AC adapters are called seems to be an insurmountable problem for
most power monitoring apps. That said, it obviously _can_ be done because
even Windows ME handles all this stuff.

2004-08-26 Thread Christopher De Vries
Just an update on this problem...

I ran another apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade last night and things went
mostly back to normal (whatever caused the problem appears to have been
fixed). It looks like some sort of hardware probing was causing
the laptop monitor to get all weird. When I tried booting into single-user mode
the text screen froze and then colors faded starting with blue, then green,
then red from the middle to the edges... quite cool looking, but a little
scary. The non-free nvidia driver stopped working, but I managed to get the
free nv driver working without much difficulty.

the following could help :)
# ls /proc/acpi/button/*
/proc/acpi/button/lid:
LID

/proc/acpi/button/power:
PWRB

so I suppose you can get button names by scanning ACPI proc dirs, right?
But I don't know if _all_ the buttons are that easy to get.

Really? So Thinkpads don't have closeable lids? :)
Granted, each laptop has its own idiosyncracies, but most have lids,
power buttons, and many have "sleep" buttons as well. With ACPI, we
could have any of these events trigger a transition to a variety of
sleep states (standby, software suspend, shutdown, etc).

Now, my *ultimate* goal would be to have a package which knew about the
peculiarities of many models of laptop and had pre-configurations for
each one. So, for an Inspiron 41xx, you could define an action for the
little "Dell" button next to the power button, etc.

So, to recap, I think a good start would be to make some scripts which
would support the features found in the vast majority of laptops.

Now you're confusing ACPI with multimedia keyboard buttons. Odds are
the Dell button you're talking about emits a keyscan to the system
when you press it.

Well, after reading the discussion that I found, it seems that your
scripts are more aimed at enabling/managing the laptop-mode in the newer
2.6 kernels, where my scripts are aimed at mapping ACPI events (sleep
button pressed, switching from AC to battery, lid closed/opened) to

Then your task is more difficult than Bart's. Yes, Thinkpads and Inspirons
both have Lids, but they don't identify them the same way. As someone else
pointed out, the actual physical buttons should be derivable from the
/proc/acpi tree, but the various events are entirely machine dependent. I
wish you both luck, but it's a hugely annoying mess that has burned out more
than a couple of developers before you.

It is not working because the version of the openafs-modules-source is
