I didn't have this problem when I used earlier versions of fglrx and 2.6.2. The problem is that the whole system hangs when you switch from X to console. There's two workarounds I know of: 1. Disable DRI. Add thisline to your XF86Config-4: Option "no_dri" "yes" 2. Don't use framebuffer, this will enable you to use DRI. If anyone know of a better solution, please share! APM, with kernel 2.4.24 for IBM R40(e)
Hello I installed Knoppix 3.3, which comes with kernel 2.4.22-xfs on the R40. Per default apm seems to be turned off apm -s returns no APM support in the kernel. Indeed as one can see in the files modules.conf: options apm power_off=1 and in lilo.conf append="hda=scsi hdb=scsi hdc=scsi hdd=scsi hde=scsi hdf=scsi hdg=scsi hdh=scsi apm=power-off nomce" So I commented out the lines above and rebooted, with no effect whatsover on the apm support. Next step was to download the 2.4.24 kernel, I run make xonfig, selected monolitic apm support, run make dep, make bzImage and configured lilo.conf. When booting the new kernel to my surprise apm -s gave me the same result: No APM support in the kernel! In the Linux for Laptop site, people who successfully got APM to work, used the 2.6 kernel, but I would prefer for the moment to stick on the 2.4 kernel. Can anybody help me? Re: APM, with kernel 2.4.24 for IBM R40(e)
Hi there, Quite simply there are R40's that do support APM. However, the R40e is not one of them. So, the short answer is that you cannot use APM with any kernel on an R40e. You must use ACPI, and there are problems with the processor.o and thermal.o modules on that machine as well. Newer laptops don't have APM support anymore. But some machines still support both APM and ACPI (usually this is not documented by the manufacturer). It's easy to give APM a try. Re: APM, with kernel 2.4.24 for IBM R40(e)
Yes it is, just don't load up processor.ko once you have compiled in ACPI. ACPI on the r40e will give you the ability to view battery life and if you compile in cpufreq support you can also use powernowd to cycle the processor power usage and save your battery life. My processor is running at 250Mhz as I type this in fact, but when I click send I know that powernowd will cycle the processor up to nearer 2ghz. I've been working with the developers to resolve issues with processor.ko module and so far tonight I've managed to get it to run thanks to a patch one very kind developer worked on and sent me. I still can't suspend or standby though, so we're not totally there yet. I'll keep this list informed as to how things go.
Thanks Uwe Brauer

Sorry Pete On Fri, 2004-04-30 at 16:00, Uwe Brauer wrote: > Hello > > I installed Knoppix 3.3, which comes with kernel > 2.4.22-xfs on the R40. This appears to be bug 246642 due to a kernel change, see http://bugs.debian.org/246642 -- Blars Blarson [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.blars.org/blars.html With Microsoft, failure is not an option. It is a standard feature.
